Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Kitee. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen.
"Sleeping Sun" is a power ballad and the fourth single by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. It was released as a maxi single with three other songs on 2 August 1999 to coincide with the total solar eclipse that would occur on 11 August.

Both are beautiful and I like them. But.. Tarja's voice is easy to recognize from 1000 blind auditions from the first note.
It's this easy for me. Tarja makes me feel a way. Goodbumps. Bone marrow vibrating. She takes you places. Floor not as much. Both are good. Fine, No complaint. But Tarja is special. And it matched with Marko and Jukka.
Always hated Tarja's singing. With her sharp distorted vowels she murdered the english language.

There are songs that I think fit Tarja better, and songs that fit Floor better. I will never say one singer was better than the other for everything because they're not. I personally think this song fits Tarja's style better and enjoy it more with her singing. But there are songs that once Floor sings them she owns them. Also, let's not forget about Anette. Where as she wasn't that good (IMO mind you) on the more classical pieces, she could sing the hell out of their rock songs that were written for her. Every singer has their strengths and weaknesses.
completely agree, I have a preference for one over the other but they are all great in there own way. Anette wasn't as strong live (my opinion) but as you said she can sing the hell out of songs written for her.
I may like a singer better than another, but will never say one is better than the other. after all, Floor and Tarja are still good friends.
There are some old songs that fit Tarja perfectly, the epic ones (Wishmaster etc.), cause she has such a notable classy ‘fantasy’ timbre. Floor is better in Celtic or brutal/metal stuff because of her warrior energy 😅
Yes I agree 100%. I am a Nightwish fan first and while I love Floor I would also agree that Tarja on this song is outstanding. You really can't go wrong with a Nighwish song for sure.
Yeah, it always kinda weirded me out hearing one of them sing a song that was written for a different singer. They each had their own style and the songs were definitely written with them in mind. Maybe it's just because I'm used to the version of each song that I heard first, but I can't think of any other bands or singers where it was so obvious to me that they're singing someone else's song.
@@Ephelle AC/DC comes to mind. :D To me no one can sing a Bon Scott song the way he did. I have the utmost respect for Brian Johnson and what he's done for the band, but the way Bon sang is completely different to the way Brian sings. Hearing Brian sing Dirty Deeds makes me cringe a bit, but then I try to imagine Bon singing Thunderstruck and I just can't. A new singer joining a band does they best they can with older songs. Sometimes they knock it out of the park, and sometimes it's just not the same.
I just love both Tarja and her voice.
She has thicker, deeper voice, compared to most female singers, who have thin and annoying voice.
Floor is a great singer... she is perfect for nightwish today, there is no better choice. But she has one problem: she came after Tarja. And most of the early nightwish-fans, who "grew up" with Tarja and all these songs, fell in love with them - with the band, with this classical metal combination, that was something completely new in that time. It was a great time, that will never come back again. Nightwish has many new great songs, but these old songs - they were Tarja-Songs, and they will always be. When Floor sings them, it just feels like a cover (but of course a good cover 😄)

Yes, very different in their aproach but,both outstanding singers and regarded by many,as the top in their craft. Preferences will always have some "discusions" (say the least)but these ladies have earned their place in music history. Well done Beth.👍🤘 greetings from Spain.

Thank you for this reaction. Tarja is my favorite female singer since 25 years. She has such a unique and beautiful voice. But also powerful. There’s something special and magical in it.
She not only studied here in Germany. Tarja also studied in Finland. At a Highschool for music and at the famous Sibelius Academy.
She was the first to graduate with top grade.
The Nightwish songs from Tarja’s era will always belong to her. 🤘🏻

Tarja always was my favorite nightwish's singer so underrated but she's a Finland treasure and always will be love so much her style i would like you hopefully react her music solo like "I walk alone"or "until my last breath" among others great songs she had.
finland let her star live in Argentina XDDDDDD and she enriched so much with arg folk music. that for sure that Tarja now has x2 x4 better than that tarja
Christmas 2022 i was in Tallinn, Estonia watching her special short tour show "Christmas Together" she was singing most of the classical songs, was so beautiful, a lot of people crying :) But regarding Nightwish, happy that i got to see her sing when she was still in the band and when they were on their peak :)
I am very happy that you appreciate both singers and just point out the differences. Many commenters speak ill of one of the two singers. This is daft because it is so obvious that both singers are of high quality. And apart from this the song is absolutely beautiful as are many songs that Tuomas Holopainen wrote for Nightwish. Loved this reaction, thank you for explaining the differences between the 2 singers. They are great but completely different and unique, they shouldn't be compared. I personaly love Tarja more because i love old Nightwish days the most but Floor sings beautifully as well ☺️🤗🎊💯🙌
I agree that hboth are fantastic vocalists in their own rights, and any discussion if any one is "better" than the other is null and void from the get go. In the Nightwish backlog, there are some songs that are suited maybe a little more for the one or the other type of singing, and one can enjoy the different approaches. And it is strictly my own opinion that over all, Floor just has a few more tools in her box and over the whole discography, brings more variety to the table. Tarja is firmly rooted in the more operatic style, while Floor... as the saying goes, Floor doesn't sing what she can, but sings what she wants. We get to hear anything from growls over powerful belts to goosebumps inducing operatic style (Shoemaker! Ad Astra!).
Tarja's signature sound is definitely the more operatic one, but at this point she also has a chestier _and_ a lighter voice that she uses, which I love!! Have you seen her perforn House of Wax - live at Genelec Artist Room? So unlike anything you'd expect from her but definitely showing she's less limited than people assume :) You should check it our if you haven't seen it, just out of curiousity maybe! :)

I love Tarja as well as Floor. Can't help, at a personal taste i like at this moment of time Floor version. And i read it before, the studio album of Annette maybe my favourite.
Thanks so much for getting back to Tarja. 🖤Sleeping Sun is a beautiful song, and I love Tarja's version from the Metal Church concert or her recent cover with Steve 'n' Seagulls. In the first case, I find her voice much cleaner, and in the second, it's an interesting combination with the bluegrass style. Overall, I prefer Tarja's cleaner voice as she developed it after leaving Nightwish. But of course I love her work with the band too so much. She was amazing with them too. From Metal Church, I highly recommend her cover of Avegend Sevenfold's Afterlife. She uses her voice very diversely there.
I can't listen to Floor singing those old songs, I genuinely hate it. I stopped listening to Nightwish after Tarja has left, I just can't, it's not the same sound I fell in love with in 2004 or so. I do think that Floor is a good fit for them and that they're still a good rock band, but it's not for me anymore. Tarja's new stuff I listen to sometimes, but it's not the same too, the magic is not there, almost, but no :-)
EDIT: Didn't mention Annette, I actually quite liked Amaranth and Bye Bye Beautiful, but it was so obviously not Nightwish that I never thought that she's there for long. Although the way they've parted sours me to the post Tarja version of the band even more.

You may not read this since it's a month too late, but I read that Tarja said this was a difficult song because the breathing was so much different than what her training taught her (or something like that). I think both Tarja and Floor are great and I like that you show the difference of how they were trained kinda defines how they sing differently.
Not related, I was listening to my Robin Trower compilation and I noticed in places that Jimmy Dewar's vocals had been doubled occasionally and he uses (to me) a surprising amount of vibrato which is reflected in the guitar effects sometimes. This is because of you telling us about these things. I experianced music that I'd been listening to since it was new in a new way today after literally decades of hearing it. When it comes to Tarja, I was very anti-Floor (even though I only saw her with Nightwish 2 times live), and my first impression with this video was, that you cant really compare Floor with Tarja. But I started to notice now great Floor is singing some parts. It is different, but still great. My love for Tarja's version didnt let me see this, but now I could hear it more clearly :)
Even though lots of people love Floor, I did underestimated her, but this comparison helped me see her greatness as well, thank you

You can tell Tarja was quite ill and breathy here but I love her voice on this song, especially the older versions when her voice was darker and rounder. Such a beautiful track ❣Thank you for this reaction and analysis! :)
I wonder why do people allways have to make this excuse? Opera singer Maggie Renee reacted to a different recording of Sleeping Sun with Tarja and also came to the conclusion that Tarja's technique is not optimal. Also in the comments of that video people started making excuses about Tarja's health... So is Tarja always sick? O might there be another problem?

Also it's not an excuse, it's simply a fact. It's also a fact that she's not a professional opera singer. And Tarja is the first one to say she does not sing perfect and that she makes mistakes when she performs live. But she also says that she sings with her heart and I care more about that than about a perfect technique. If I wanted perfect I'd listen to auto tune.
@@karadenizin-kizi Maybe... But it never has been perfect and her current technique is even worse. You don't believe me? Just listen to Tarja trying to sing Nemo live in Serbia in october 2022... It is terrible. And the thing is that all these Tarja-zelots are convinced that Tarja is "on another level" and has "superior technique". Which she doesn't. As a singer Floor has a much better technique and a much better control over her voice than Tarja. Now it can be that you like Tarja's sound better than Floor's sound. If that is so, fine, you are welcome to it! But this shouting about the superiority of Tarja needs to be corrected. Tarja is a special talent with a special voice (which I happen not to like...) but she is far from perfect and actually not a very good singer at all.

Opera singers use so-called squillo - a resonant, trumpet-like sound - to cut through an orchestra. Franco Corelli and Mario Lanza were very good at this.
Pretty much any pre-microphone (in opera) era singer was good at this, otherwise people wouldn't be able to hear them :-) Now, I understand why you mention Corelli, arguably the best spinto ever, but Lanza sang with microphone, you can't really tell how his voice was shaped, you can clearly hear the ringing in the recordings but how much of it is amplification is hard to tell.
I personally love and adore Lanza, that's where my journey into the world of opera has started, but I would probably not mention him and Corelli in one sentence talking about operatic technique, the levels are too far apart :-)
Not only to cut throught an opera, but to go LOUD be heard and sing 5 times a week, so opera sing protects vocal cords

It's like comparing apples and oranges. They're both awesome and delicious in their individual way... it's just up to personal preference.
For me personally, I like Floor, she's got a hell of a stage presence, but there is only one Tarja, and her style fits the ORIGINAL Nightwish sound better for me.
Tarja has a power and purity in her notes that Floor just doesn't have for me, and her range is far superior.
I love both but Tarja owns this one.
Floor is perfect... humanly... Tarja is just magic!
We Nightwish fans have been very blessed.
I prefer Floor in this instance, but both are lovely performances.

Thank you for paying attention and appreciating Nightwish of Tarja's era. It looks like most of reactors on RUclips are obsessed with Floor and almost totally ignore the band in its earlier years. Don't get me wrong, Floor does great job in the band, including singing of many Tarja's era songs brilliantly, but Tarja was also great in the band and the band was great with her. "Sleeping Sun" is one of the songs that's been and will remain a song for Tarja to sing, imho. As a side note: please, don't pronounce it like /ʤ/ in her name. It's close to /j/, like in "you".
... but no one much react to Anette Olzon who joined for two years or so in-between (but apparently could not handle the rigorous touring schedule). The Blaze Bailey of Nightwish :)
Floor is my #1, but this is one of those songs that Tarja owns 100 %.

I don't like to compare Tarja, Anette or Floor. All these wonderful women have their own strengths and place in Nightwish history. Some songs suit one person better than another. 😊 Tarja started the charm, Anette broke records and Floor charmed everyone. Greetings from Finland! Kiitos! 😊🤘🏻
There is a thing about this operatic vibrato, the manner Tarja expresses. There are lots of instances where I hear Tarja making an onset that is a quarter or a half note above or below the note required. She corrects this in a quarter of a second. That gives it a searching or hovering aspect, I would call it unstable.
The tone quality may be beautiful but I prefer a straight note or a deliberate slide to a note instead of this stepping up or stepping down all the time.
Is this Karlsruhe fashion? Because I listen to operasingers using vibrato but not being unstable in note finding...
That’s how I feel about Floor when she can’t find the note so she suddenly belts it a bit. You can tell she’s struggling and it actually stresses me out so much I can’t listen to it.
Tarja has been doing this song for so many years and now all of a sudden it bothers you and now that you hear a pop-ish singer do it you like it because you wanna jump on the bandwagon because of the generation we live in
I prefer Tarja for this song. Some others, I prefer Floor. Most, I couldn't pick which is better if my life depended on it. I like my belts, so I prefer Floor on more songs, but that's personal preference, not skill.

Me encantó lo profesional que fuiste al comparar los contrastes distintos de ambas cantantes es de aplaudir no cualquier reactor interpreta de esta forma siempre lo hacen anteponiendo el favoritismo estupendo análisis y te recomiendo a Tarja como SOLISTA porfavor si puedes analizar su rango vocal es que aún sigue estudiando canto y vocalización en la actualidad de hecho para Tarja su prioridad es de cuidar su voz tiene inclusive unos tratamientos para sus cuerdas vocales para no perder esa voz aguda estridente gótica espeluznante y teatral super versátil de acuerdo como a ella le parece toca notas vocales increíbles aqui te dejo un listado de canciones de Tarja con su propia banda creada desde el año 2006

Being a "fan" of Nightwish has nothing to do with Tarja.. She's the reason I was never a fan when they started.. Can't stand her singing, sounds like a cat on a tin roof, ccan't understand half the words she sings and she's off pitch constantly..
Didn't become a fan untill Floor completed Nightwish, Floor is on point every time, powerfull, emotinal, empathic, the full package..

I love Tarja and I love Floor. 🍎’s & 🍊’s but both are great.
The fact is Floor can do everything Tarja can and more. This is speaking about technique. Floor's diction of the English language also helped Nightwish reach a much broader audience than with Tarja. Keep in mind I've listened to Nightwish since the beginning, so I was actually biased towards Tarja, but the years have taught me that fair is fair. Floor's versatility, range, stage presence and charisma have made her the best nightwish singer so far. My opinion, of course. Tastes differ.

This is a Brazilian rock band "Rosa de Saron", from they "in concert" album, song "A Phoenix". It was recorded few months ago with a philharmonic camera (of Indaiatuba). Carmen Monarcha and the Livre Choir bright this song to make it so gorgeous. For me, it's the best brazilian live song I ever listen.
I would love to listen your opinion for those singers and the song itself.
Floor sounds "constricted" whilst Tarja seems to be more "effortless". Is she using some type of breathing technique over and above what Floor does?

Out of interest is it just the vocal tract shaping that gives Tarja her unique voice? Or are there other things she's doing over and above perhaps a regular rock singer?
She is one of the very very few singers that I can truly say reaches into my soul with her voice (particularly from the Helsinki concert).

I love both but for me Floor just brings bucket loads of emotion to every song. Tarja has the same sound in every song.
I like the way Tarja sings, her accent, she is better for me, But I love Floor too.
Sleeping sun belongs to Tarja. As much i ❤ Floor.

There is no Tarja vs Floor. There is Tarja AND Floor. Putting singers up against each other is unfortunate thing to do in this toxic fanbase where everything is a competition.Reality tv generation doesn't know any better.The song is a Nightwish song and the band doesn't compete against itself.Watch this comment section fill up with who did it better and with backhanded compliments. Entitled fans make it all about themselves.Whole _____VS._____ is immature and music should never be a competition said Tuomas Holopainen, a man who made this masterpiece. Old band as Nightwish is deseves respect. I don't care who sings what. Every member contributed to a legacy of Nightwish.
Some days I prefer to listen to old Nightwish, some days I prefer new. They are both fantastic indeed ❤
