Hello Nina Schofield ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This song was performed at Vizovice Masters of Rock festival 2016, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band. As you noticed, this is a ballad, and it was composed for the 1999 solar eclipse.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland...
... Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. Gabriel Hellfest 2022 should be in consideration for adding to the list
A very professional analysis never mind a reaction. Floor is known to sing very clearly no matter the genre. This song is better visually at the Tampere performance where they focus much more on Floor at the right times. I think your next song MUST be the “obligatory” Ghost Love Score from the Wacken 2013 show. It’s the world’s most reacted song on RUclips and transcends most listeners no matter there preference in music genre
Plse follow Gabriel's advise for more diverse Nightwish songs. In fact they have only 2 songs. 1: i did not expect this, and 2: that is my new favorite song.

Based on how you reacted to this, you will have lot of fun exploring this band. Tuomas (keyboards) is special talent as a composer. Fans call him Metal Mozart. Nightwish is without any shadow of a doubt one of the most talented bands ever.
Not the typical song a reactor chooses to do as a first song of Nightwish. But you'll fall down the Nightwish rabbit hole soon enough.
And thinking this is only the tip of the ice berg of Floor's vocal capabilities... You are so right! :-)

Hi Nina. Really enjoyed your reaction. Nightwish's music is well worth exploring as it is very diverse, none of their songs are alike. There are epic and melodic songs, but they can also go really heavy on you and the next song could be very celtic sounding or even jazzy. You're right stating that you've only scratched the surface of what they can do. Floor Jansen, a vocal coach herself, can sing with an operatic approach, pop, rock and even grunting. She's a master at conveying emotion with her voice and her stage presence is unmistakable. The musicianship of the whole band is impressive. Their music is exceptionally well composed and arranged. The lyrics are very powerful and poetic, which leads to great storytelling.

Sleeping Sun: written in 1999 for the total solar eclipse of 11th August that year.
History: Floor Jansen is the 3rd vocalist, replacing Anette Olzon, who replaced Tarja Turunen.
Gabriel's list is good start to Nightwish, but use your creativity and add something from Human::Nature album to it. Concentrate to live stuff. All Nightwish stuff is different but still has Tuomas'es signature (the keyboard player is the resident genius/wizard).

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. The best thing to do is choose from Gabriel’s list…it’s a collection of the best live performances in regards to sound and picture quality,correct speed and stage show and from the best live concerts as well.It’s a wide ranging list to choose from so if you stick to these versions you won’t be disappointed.

Yes, this was a single made for the 1999 eclipse. 222 Day of Light, it was 222 days from Jan1 to the eclipse on Aug 11. Their second album, Oceanborn, was reissued later that year with this song added. It was recorded with original lead singer Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen, who is the most operatic of the 3 female lead singers. Floor Jansen(Yan-sen) ,seen here, is the most versatile. The second singer, Anette Olzon, has more of a pop/rock style.
What else can they do? Just about anything. As you will come to find out, every song is different, and yes, you've only scratched the surface.

I saw Nightwish a few weeks ago at a small venue in NYC and it was simply mesmerizing. This song is about 10% of what she/they can do LOL. Wait till you hear her operatic stuff! I'll leave it to the diehards for the suggestions. I love it all, although make sure you always do the live versions ;) 'The Greatest Show on Earth' and 'Shoemaker' are my favorites live. Really enjoyed this analysis/reaction, Everything regarding Nightwish songs is about details and movement, this is not just music, it is compositions. And a lot of emotions, Tuomas (keyboardist) is the master mind behind 95%of the songs, he is also called Metal Mozart.
Well an then the singer, Floor (in this video) is an amazing singer and a captivating performer doing all from operatic to growl, and magnificent belting.

I see by your videos and by your comment that you do not typically listen to rock music. Symphonic metal is different. The complexities of the music and the abilities of the singers are second to none. Some of the other bands and performances that I know you would enjoy reviewing besides Nightwish are Epica, Within Temptation, and Ayreon. There are many others of course, but to me, these are the top four within the genre.
I would suggest Epica as the next one to review. Their singer, Simone Simons is right there with Floor. My favorite performance of theirs right now is Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 from the Omega Alive virtual concert.
For non-metal, may I recommend a group called OGene and their performance of the song Sing on the show Beste Zangers? They are a trio of sisters and are just incredible.

Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Aries is a great song to see Floor and Nightwish conveying emotion (makes me tear up every time ). How's the Heart, acoustic from the Planet Rock session, is a more complicated piece where the acoustic setting let's you really hear what she can do with her voice and is just a beautiful song. Shoemaker, an ode to planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker, is another vocally difficult song with an epic operatic ending , especially with the visual's from the lyric video. However you choose to explore this band and their singers, the army will be here to support and encourage you.

this is actually one of the songs on which i favor tarja. This and dead;s boy poem. I find her voice way more haunting then floors. Tho floor is more versatile in her vocal ability
I feel like her voice is slighty too bright for this song. Tarja's voice is darker. Not sure if i make sense
