Thank you to Mike at EVuniverse.com for letting me spend the afternoon with his Cybertruck!
Something I didn’t mention in the video since I didn’t really get a chance to try it prior to the video or during the video is that the sound system in typical Tesla fashion absolutely rocks.
If you’re not already, be sure to follow me on Twitter / X: x.com/brandenflasch
Thanks Branden for making the trip and the thoughts on our tester!
Its pretty mad how the elon fans in the comments respond to anyone pointing out issues, its almost like a cult
almost like it makes u mad?
It is a literal cult in anything but name. Then again, no real cult has ever called itself a "cult" 🤭
Fair critisims welcome. Ignorance or knoweledge based on click bait headlines are frustrating. An impressions video after an afternoon w/ the truck, not useful.
$100,000+ for a vehicle you can drive around screaming, "Everybody's looking at me!" P.T. Barnum was absolutely correct.
Yea, I'd rather drive a Toyota Sienna.
Spoken like a true boomer
Very reminiscent of DeLorean. Cool design, stainless steel shell, wildly impractical, badly built and full of silly design mistakes.
Typically excellent vid Branden. We enjoyed the watch over dinner tonight. 🙂
Also, I really liked your comment along the lines of Tesla seemingly designing this with more of an eye towards creating something really different than really great. I couldn't agree more.
This clearly wasn't ready for primetime yet, but they rushed it out the door. Time will improve things, but this definitely could have stood another year in the oven.
I went to an EV Event yesterday and there were 18 CyberTrucks. They go attention, but it wasn’t crazy or anything much more than the other cars. I’d say the modded Teslas got more attention.
I feel as these get more common they’ll get less looks and attention. They make good rolling billboards now.
Yeah this is likely the case. I have been so heavily exposed to the CT on twitter that I kinda don't care about it. It's not really shocking to see or anything like that. I get way more excited seeing Rivians (especially the amazon vans!) tbh
Pretty normal for new Tesla platforms.
People with the first Model S or Model 3, also had many talks with strangers.
I think the tonneau cover is the best designed tonneau cover on the market. It gives confidence to hear it opening and closing unlike the Rivian tonneau cover I kind of make a sour lemon face every time I hear it
It’s great aside from the blocking the rear window
@@brandenflasch oh I didn't think about that... It was a absolute misstep to not put a camera washer on the back camera!
@@brandenflaschwhy the review mirror isn’t a screen is beyond me. I saw a video from the 2019 unveiling the other day when they gave demo drives and it had a screen. People will say it’s too expensive, but it’s a $100k truck.
@@ericroe exactly. No excuse.
@@brandenflasch camera replaces that need. As well as if you regularly tow trailer a rear view mirror and rear window becomes useless as well. I think the tonneau is more valuable to the customers
CT...the only truck a Tesla Fanboy/girl can love. It's bold, attention grabbing and down right fugly.
It is a bloated, egotistical monstrosity with huge blind spots and too many imperfections for the price. It surely reflects the mind set of Musk.
I own a MYLR and put up with some of its "issues" because it was at a reasonable price point. Tesla didn't meet its own goals for the production of the CT and then rushed it before getting it right.
PS...I'm not against futuristic design but it should not be at the expense of function and practicality. But...those with money to burn really don't care as long as they can have the "coolest toy" to stroke their ego.
I liked the CT from the second I saw it. But, I've never seen a vehicle with so many obvious design flaws. Thanks for the tour.
Pointing out the snow shelf covering those lights is a CRAZY oversight on their part. This is supposed to be basically teslas version of the R1 lineup - a rugged, adventure vehicle capable of keeping up with the demands of people who love pushing boundaries outdoors, a strong and capable option for a work truck, and a comfortable and intuitive daily driver.
If this was a prototype at an expo years before release, I would feel very differently. Even though it is an incredibly unsafe vehicle, the concept is a cool design.
But it’s not a concept car or a prototype, and its 100k price point baffles me.
No insulation on the frunk, no rear camera washer like basically everything else at this price point has (bmw, Mercedes), TERRIBLE alignment on tons of cars that made it past quality control, and cheap build quality all around is incredibly disappointing, but expected given teslas recent history.
Teslas best bet is to stick with M3,X,S, & Y. They are good vehicles that have had plenty of time to refine along the way. They have a great charging network to support them and have slowly made lots of crazy good improvements to the OS.
If they stick with those and address the issues that people have with them, like poor build quality in interiors of higher end model S and X trims, then they’ll have a lot more new EV adopters choose them quicker.
My tow vehicle is a 2015 Porsche Cayenne diesel … it’s a tow monster … great for roadtripping … but heavy for around town driving … looking forward to getting my CT after the initial kinks are worked out
I agree 100% that the charge port not being on the passenger front for towing without unhooking is a massive miss.
Also, with the tonneau being so sturdy I wonder if it can turn into a child safety issue with no way out. There's a lot of tempting room for them to want to play hide in there.
And forget about all the Tesla fanboys complaining and whining. I'm a huge Tesla fan, and they're the main reason we're on this EV revolution, but there's also quite a bit to complain about. You can't get better unless you hear about what needs to be better.
Pickup truck drivers know how to back up that's why the plug is in the back.
@@65SoYolo Did you read the point in the comment of charging while "towing without unhooking."
If people paid more attention to what they're actually buying it would make companies like tesla improve the quality. Its beyond me how they could release a car like this for 100k...
yes , some early manufacturing teething issues but in total , the platform is awesome in my opinion …
"School activity bus" That is a new one. Nice review Branden.
Branden, I’m in agreement with about 99% of what you had to say and that’s pretty excellent! I always enjoy your content and I have been since you were driving around the USA in your Model S with it’s free Supercharging!
Does a 4x8 sheet of plywood or similar fit in the bed? It clearly looks like it would at the top but this is the first time I've seen the bed go "in" at the base like that
yes with the tailgate open. its a 6 ft bed.
@@nubbinzawyer that's fine then; it just looked like it got really narrow in the bottom of it
I really hate the textured dash on this. The Alcantara dash looks better, but neither is really ideal. Not sure why they didn't do the same dash material that they're using on Highland, which is essentially just the vegan leather. Would look better, be easier to clean, and would probably be more durable.
I also noticed Tesla's route planner/trip planner has been getting worse over time. When we did our NY trip in the new Y last week, the route planner was almost useless, preferring long charges (some were 55 minutes!), and doing dumb stuff like routing us to chargers to charge for 0 minutes
Tesla route planner has gotten pretty bad lately. Works great with manual stops, but I feel bad for those that don’t realize they need to do this.
I never use the route planner. I always navigate charger to charger.
The dash material in the Highland is fabric, not the fake leather.
@@Tschacki_Quacki the accent strip is fabric. The actual dashboard material is the faux leather.
Branden - I agree with your overall assessments but I'm very excited to receive my Cybertruck even with its shortcomings. I do NOT like the current design of the Steering Wheel and prefer to have the YOKE design which I plan to install.
Given how deep the dashboard is, I’ve always been shocked at how tiny the frunk is. You mean to tell me with a 2ft deep dashboard you couldn’t fit more under there to make the frunk bigger?
Exactly
@@brandenflasch think of the future and holograms
Reminds me of watching a guy play a one man band kit. Its a Rube Goldberg design where simple tasks are accompished by complex and unnecessary systems. I though Elon said the best part is NO part. Can't you open the charging door yourself? This thing will live most of its life broken or in the shop for endless repairs of plastic parts. "Look at me" buyers delight. People are looking because it looks ridiculous. Throw in all the standard EV probems and you have a masochist's delight.
"Endless repairs of plastic parts?"
Which plastic parts are going to "break"?
Extremism argument
Why do they even make cars if I can take the bus or walk?
Thank you for your honest thoughts!!
Michael was nice enough to meet me in Raleigh to show it off to my son. We own a Model 3
I think this is one of the best reviews I’ve seen. So many things about the CyberTruck scream odd, ugly and cheap
Review any Chrysler, Ford or GM truck that's $100k+ and you will find the exact same issue with cheap plastic, panels misaligned, etc
A CT followed by a Rivian? Hell, I still turn my head just to look at the Rivian.
🤣
This early VIN CT series reminds me of the Model Y. At launch the Model Y had several issues, from build quality to aesthetics. Now the Model Y has extra cabin comforts (re-configured console, USB-C charge ports, carpeted door pocket trim and rear door sills). I do hope Tesla is listening to YT reviews and initial customer feedback in order to make future VIN CT’s better.
That said, there is absolutely ZERO excuse why CT’s out of Austin should have body panel/alignment issues (especially after Elon’s message to the Team about “microns, not millimeters”). Someone at Tesla should be QC’ing off the line under a microscope. I have a CT on order, and if it has ANY of these alignment issues, delivery will be rejected, period, full stop.
Furthermore (and to your point) it is highly disappointing to see FSD included in the price, yet CT does not even have basic AP. To add insult to injury, FSD has been price dropped at the subscription rate of $99/mo. (to include a free 1 month trial no less). Tesla should either cease this practice or update the CT’s already.
I recently downloaded the trial FSD onto my 2022 Model Y LR, and my wife’s 2023 M3, and completed a 2600mi roadtrip from CA to TX utilizing FSD/AP almost the entire way on the MY LR. To attempt the same drive w/o FSD/AP would have been extremely exhausting.
Awesome video review and chat, this is very helpful for potential customers. ✌🏻😎.
4:11 I guess the Tesla design team were in either CA or TX so they never thought about the snow problem 😂
Too much winning . You are missing the forrest for the trees.
The trees matter.
No mention of the absence of IIHS nor NHTSA safety accreditation? Why is everyone missing this? It's 2024. Crashworthiness is integral to a vehicles design.
Are you trying to insinuate that the vehicle is not legal?
@@brandenflasch Not one single reviewer that I am aware of has tackled the subject of crashworthiness, in the context of this vehicle.
I have investigated the status of the Cyber truck and I have been unable to find any evidence that independent testing has been performed by either the IIHS nor the NHTSA on this vehicle.
I raised this concern with Jason, from the RUclips channel "Engineering Explained".
He was kind enough to reply that a transfer was affixed to the vehicle that he was testing that the vehicle has not been subjected to such testing.
I would be very interested to know if Tesla have been able to avoid this either by
sales volume (i.e. kit cars) or have only released the vehicles in states with less than current crashworthiness requirements.
It is not my intention to insinuate anything pertaining to the crash worthiness and testing protocols of the Cyber Truck but is rather to seek clarification on the issue for others and myself. It is very odd that in this day and age that this topic has not been addressed, despite the reviews on this product. Perhaps you could shed some light?
Ignorant comment. You think this would be allowed to sell in America without meeting safety regulations? Are you serious?
Or no eMPG Rating at FuelEconomy.gov. To me, the rear view situation is horrible. At least have a big digital rear view mirror that can display the rear camera feed.
The only reviewer speaking the truth!!!!
Well you finally got to say what you've been dying to say. Now, to find an Ohio State review of Michigan football.😅
Bro he drives a Tesla
At 26:40 you point out how Tesla made the CyberTruck different just to be different and that is so true. Remember the Rivian has a lower coefficient of drag, and it looks like a traditional pickup.
For real, usually Tesla designs from a functionality perspective. Cybertruck was design first and then everything else made to fit that design.
If the Rivian was the same size as the CT, would it still have a lower coefficient of drag?
@@Nitroscion Yes, because drag coefficient is the aerodynamic efficiency of an object irrespective of its size or velocity.
If you want to factor in size, then you need to check the CdA which is the drag coefficient multiplied by the A(frontal area).
@@officialyasir That makes sense.if I’m understanding correctly, It seems like using the coefficient of drag is pointless in determining whether a vehicle shape is better then another. The difference with a plane and a car driving on the road in a the turbulence under a vehicle can be reduced by lowering the vehicle as close to the road as possible. The cybertruck being higher off the ground with big tires, must increase the drag a lot. I wonder what the drag would be if it had smaller tires and was as low to the ground as a super car.
@@Nitroscionthe CyberTruck can be quite low to the ground, it has air ride. When you see pictures of it with high ground clearance it’s in its easiest position. Rivian also has air ride that is adjustable.
Tell me you have no friends without telling me you have no friends
Guess if you buy a CT, you might call it _FLASCH GORDON_ or simply _THE FLASCH_
And you got the amps wrong
What?
The Rivian is a much much better truck.
It's funny how everyone complaining that this is all you get from a $100k car will probably never buy a $100k car. If you did buy one, you'd know that there's no $100k car that doesn't have something you can complain about.
The exact same argument is made for any other Tesla anyway. - "That's not acceptable for a car that costs 50k!!!"
When Tesla does the 25k vehicle, the usualy dummies will repeat the same things again - "It should be a lot better for 25k!!!"
😂
I’ve always felt like Branden bought the 4680 Model Y just so he could do nothing but complain about it and after watching this review I’m sure of it.
Complaint after complaint. For context, compared to the R1T the CT has a larger bed, better handling, better turn radius, on board power, wins on a cross country trip, a power tonneau cover, better ground clearance, a hard shell that can’t get scratched….
But Branden likes to point out there’s a shelf where snow will collect whereas a Rivian’s doesn’t have that.
CT has downsides…. But of all the reviews, this one has the highest level of nitpicking and the lowest enthusiasm for any of the superior qualities the CT has compared to other EV pickups.
Seems like you’re is just trying to counter balance the Tesla fanboys who think it’s engineering genius and the best truck ever and the less than promised range, etc and in doing so you’re completely missing what Tesla actually delivered. If it had curved aluminum panels and a Rivian emblem on it you’d be jumping for joy I feel like
I bought my 4680 Y because I thought it would be a good vehicle, and aside from the charging, it is.
Handling is subjective, not sure it’s easy to compare, but most if not all the EV pickups have on board power, they all have/will have access to the Tesla Supercharger network so cross country speed comes down to battery size and charging speed and the Tesla has one of the smallest batteries. The Cybertruck probably does have the best turning radius with rear wheel steering. Rivian has way higher quality for sure, not sure on F150 or Silverado. Looks are subjective. It’s all tradeoffs. Cybertruck if you want attention, Rivian if you want higher quality premium feel, F150 if you want more of a real work truck, Silverado if you want to tow with it’s huge battery.
Have you driven both? And what's your definition of handling?
The Rivian has the hydraulically linked dampers which gives it incredible capabilities in terms of ride, handling, and off-road. Rear wheel steer may give some handling prowess to the CT.
Also, the Cybertruck has worse departure and breakover angles as well as SIGNIFICANTLY less articulation if we're going down the off-road route.
The Rivian *does* come with a power tonneau if you option it that way.
Finally, did you see *how hard* the Cybertruck team had to work to win a 40 hour race by 20 minutes? Now that Rivians can access Superchargers, I think the results would have changed (but not by much).
Part of point is that Elon and Tesla launched a MASSIVELY hyped product, and it's selling for $20k more than it's competition, but still seems unfinished and definitely under-delivered on range and charging.
Four minutes in the video… loving what I’m hearing. Nice and truly honest opinions reflecting here. Quite refreshing from the fanboys out there.
Can’t believe the hood does not have an insulator. But then again it’s Tesla and it’s all about saving $$$.
If it was a $50k truck, many things would be reasonable compromises to save cost. Not on a $100k truck.
the patented Tesla bad build quality
What a poor quality truck.
I am glad it has no chance to get licensed in europe!
Man using standards that he don’t go for other cars like 99% of cars are not made of plastic lol
I people are so soft now do you really need padding on top of the trunk lid?
It has nothing to do with being soft, it has to do with being a $100k truck.
dude... the car looks like it would gauge out ur hand just running ur hand up along the thing... hard pass
you clearly don't know what special is. This is what trying hard to downplay cybertruck looks like.

This is not FUD at all. I showed everything.
@@brandenflasch you mean you complained about EVERYTHING. 🤣
It's awfully difficult for FUD to exist about something that exists. We don't have to be uncertain about what the CT is, or doubt what they will be, when they exist and can be directly examined.
Rivian actually look like any other gas truck. It really look dated. This style is def not for everyone. If you dont like it, stick with a Rivian. Are we at a time where we complain that we actually have to drive a car and not rely on self driving?
