    I think this was a great video. A designated studio set up is perfect for consistency as well as being able to knock out a video quickly without worrying about where you are going to set up.

    Super limited budget. Upgrading my camera from my phone to an actual camera. $89 through Amazon. Using a green screen that came with 3 studio lights- $154 Amazon. I can change my background with my mouse. 10 x 20 canvass/carport studio $239/Costco. Plus tripod and miscellaneous... I got less than $750 into my studio. Thank you, Think Media, for your great videos. I am super new to RUclips and find your information invaluable! You have a loyal follower here. Keep it up!

    I'm glad to know that I'm NOT the only ONE that does the 3,2,1 or forget where I was going with my content. I've just started to become more raw in my videos, as I don't have all the time in the world to edit my videos!

    funny how years ago i watched your video and thought that someday i would be thanking you and trying to replicate this with some DIY cheap gear to go for a humble start... and now i don't know how i end up getting more advanced gear and broke the bank and still thanking you for sharing your awesome setup.

    To answer your question of the day, I think this video was very thorough. As a starting RUclipsr, I think that you really just have to work with what you have. To some it can be almost intimidating since we feel like we can't do it without all of the right equipment. It's important just to start. This video is pretty much the end goal of the perfect ideal set up. Thanks for sharing with us!

    I'm a sucker for bright backgrounds, so I use an ikea clothing rail, clothes pegs and different off cuts of material or wrapping paper. My lighting set up is similar to yours. As usual a very helpful video

    I use an inifinity black background. (Just solid black in the background.) Just get a large black cloth (can be found on amazon for about $15) and stand about 6-10 in front of it. I use a 3 point light system, 2 LED panels (left and right), and a "hair" light to keep me separated from the background.
    It's a pretty inexpensive set up and easier to keep clean than a sofa. (also a RODE mic user) :D

    • @JesseUnderscoreMartin
      @JesseUnderscoreMartin 7 лет назад +1

      +chillinkansai I've always liked the look of a black background. Two questions: What distance is your camera at? What focal length?

    • @chillinkansai
      @chillinkansai 7 лет назад +2

      I have the camera about 3-4 meters (12-15 ft.) away from the backdrop and I am about 5ft (1.5 m) in front of the camera. I use a 18-55 canon kit lens, around 24 or so to crop out the edges of the backdrop. The biggest catch is to not bring the lights too close to the backdrop. Mine are about 2-3 ft behind the camera and off to the sides. I occasionally have to tweek the video in post to darken it up a little, but generally that means I don't have the lights set quite right and the spill is making it all the way to the backdrop.

    • @JesseUnderscoreMartin
      @JesseUnderscoreMartin 7 лет назад +1

      chillinkansai Thanks for the reply. Interesting about the lighting, I wouldn't have expected that with a black background. Good luck with your channel!

    I figured out a pretty neat setup for a shotgun mic. I use a second tripod. I have 2 for when I need multiple cameras, and if I'm just making a normal video like how you are, with one camera and one mic, I can put the mic on the other tripod and put it in front of me, and since I stand for a lot of videos, it isn't usually seen in the video. and is under me, which catches my voice VERY nicely.

    I think it's important to have an interesting background. Some people may look at my background as TOO busy, but for me, I use it as a way to illustrate the mics I've tested. Hopefully people see it, and think of it as interesting, ultimately driving more traffic to my videos.

    I struggled a lot with my set area, working on what to have in it and how to light it right, camera angles. I have limited space, so it was challenging. I finally gave up and bought a 5 x 6.5 popup green/blue screen background and will be using that, inserting a nice 'set' image or whatever bg I want, including video or text if I like. I can blur a room photo in my photo editor (someone suggested I take pictures at IKEA-lol) to make it look like bokeh without having to own the right lens to make that effect in my space. So, for 53 bucks I can fake the same effect as a large aperture lens costing 300 dollars or more, but using my respectable EFS 18-55 Canon lens that came in the kit, which gives me some zoom options as well.
    I bought the Fovitec StudioPRO - 5' x 6.5' Green/Blue Double-Sided Pop-Out Muslin Backdrop from amazon.com if you are interested. Watch the video a few times to learn how to fold it up.
    FYI, I will be editing in DaVinci Resolve, which is free and has great editing, including custom mattes for green screen.

    Nice vid, as usual. Your window background does a great job of avoiding shadows on the back wall, even when you're close to it. Shadows are something I struggle with due to the layout of my available basement "studio" space, even if I get the lights right next to the ceiling.

    very informative video!.. very easy to understand for everyone. BTW ,,whenever you want to travel to different countries and do some shooting, i recommend you fly on an F214-44 since they have the best 577s and the fluxcapacitors in the cabin make safer for the electronic equipment. they have the best NEERS's and 889-CVX's around. ALso when you board,you walk through the Grouners Mattatos,they are very cool to set up once you get to your seat. When you find your seat on the 551-MHTers or the PPr5s-vss you just press the 775-ers but you cant just push the button, you set up the Crawlper's or the G.U.N.B.F's 556...cont get the 557 if they offer them..even if they're free.grab the JUUR.s's they can do some 445's look bad.

      You don't need a ring light. Led lights are cheap and have filters. Musician's friends always has good prices on stands. You don't need 1500 dollars of camera gear for a home youtube set. This guy spent 2-3 grand. You can get good RUclips video and audio equipment for around 500.

      Do what we did: Start an equipment budget. Fund it with what you can. As it grows, buy items piece by piece. Before you know it, you'll have a nice starter kit. Buying pre-owned is a great way to save loot. I just got a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens in the FB Marketplace for only $60!! Start where you are until get to where you want to be!

    Great tips. Camera gear spot on. Bi-color lights very cool. But audio can be vastly improved. Adding sound panels will get rid of the echo. Sounds like you're in a bathtub. Can't hurt to have a bigger room either. Seems cramped. And if you're home why not use a condenser mic with and audio interface recording into a DAW? There are some great cheap mics like C-1 Behringer for 50 bucks. But the advantage of your setup is that you can use it outside too. But in that case a lavalier (especially wireless or into an H1) would be a better option. The only time I see a boom stand having an advantage is with an assistant with a mobile system. Otherwise you're better off with a Shure V83 going into an H1 or something. The mic you have pretty much sucks. And going into the camera with the mic makes it even worse. Always better to record the audio separately if you like good sound. But it's way too easy to criticize. Your video is great and most people listen to it on bad speakers anyway. In my case I listened to it on a Sennheiser HD 280 my favorite studio headphones. Had the Sony one's but they didn't give me a neutral sound. It's always nice to pickup something from a video. And I picked up a couple or so here. Thank you.

    one tip: if you have a nice background (7:00) you should also put a light on that! with strip lights or a little spot you can set accents to the picture. LED lamps are easy and fast to use but you can do so much more with real lamps.

    Awesome video! I have a relatively new channel for about two months now and have the audio absolutely nailed! I am legally blind so I know or presume I was going to need some help with lighting. Very valuable information I can't wait to go see if I can afford this stuff! LOL I have many years and radio broadcasting on voiceover work so my audio is kind of high-end. Or use a four track Alisa's mixing board which is connected to my computer using USB connection. The audio go through a Sampson module that offers gate and compression among other things. I use an old dynamic Sampson Q8 microphone. So far my video I am just using the camera on my iMac desktop or when I am away from the studio are use my iPad air too. I don't like the audio so much when I am remote. We use iMovie to edit everything. I may just start using the iPad for B roll only that might be the wisest thing to do. Hey, this was great information for what equipment to use. I’m no sure it’s for beginners like me because I can’t afford this stuff just yet, but it’s nice to know
    The products to look into in the future. Thanks again!! Always incredible videos!

    A question I think most guys avoid asking or even talking about... Makeup. Do you put on any kind of makeup to your face to cut down on shine?

    • @guybirtwhistle
      @guybirtwhistle 7 лет назад +3

      MunkeySpaz I use Ben Nye Neutral Set Colorless Face Powder and a Powder Brush. Great for removing shine when you're under bright lights. No color so it doesn't look like you're wearing any makeup. You only need to use a little bit so it lasts for years.

    Hi, I've got 2 questions:
    1. can you pleaseeeee make a video about the best setup for tiny spaces? (I've literally got a tiny little space left in my room and I'm trying to use it for shooting, but it's super hard D: )
    2. how to set up 2 soft boxes for the best result?
    thank you

    I think most have too much in the background. In Australia, for me, the Gold Standard is the ABC with its 7.30 program, and its news reports.
    For a photographer, I think one or two examples on the wall behind. If those are used in the video too, then that ties the two together very well.
