When camping in a storm doesn't go to plan ruclips.net/video/PPa29NCQlkY/видео.html or maybe Bivi camping in the Peak district ruclips.net/video/VUvDIz2PA74/видео.html
This is what I love about RUclips. You can follow the worst bad ass adventurers that you really cant relate to. And then you can follow well grounded people that struggles uphill but still go on a hike. I love that! Everybody out here can be an adventurer and fabulous!
Watched this one at least twice and it is a true CLASSIC! The Solo sure held its own during all that storm! Yes! Glad you made it off the hillside safely too.
Nice to see how you handled the situation knowing your equipment and how it best works. These types of vids are even more useful and give you great ideas on how to deal with different unexpected situations..
Many years ago, I bought a Vango Tahoe 300. I chose it partly for the vestibule spaces and partly because it came with ten guy lines. However, after using it once, I added four guys of my own to open up more options to direct the tension where I wanted it. In one camping trip (in a campsite, because that tent is a heavy lump for packing), we had one night with winds gusting up to force 10. In the morning, I saw that one of my pegs had moved slightly. All the other tents on the site were in various stages of being put away or being blown across the campsite. I saw that you had your guy lines a good distance from the tent, but I might have been inclined to give them a little more tension before zipping the tent up for the night. As a general point, I try to get the guy lines as close as possible to horizontal, and as taut as I think the tent will tolerate. This seems to give the best resilience against a high wind.
I'm not really a youtuber but stumbled across your posts today and could not believe your as much of a gear enthusiast as me. I've been a hill Walker for 30+ years and camped all my life (apart from when I'm not camping of course) and buy, try, test and sell my equipment as I go along through life. Like you I've made an few discoveries on the way. Had and sold many high end tents and sleeping bags and stoves of course. Love the fact you have a soto windmaster. I've had almost everything out there and it's got to be the best little stove at the moment. Had the mukka as well and normally have quite a few stoves on the go. The optimus polaris being my current multifuel option. Not had a hilleberg tent right enough, love your channel and will watch all your videos now. Thanks, Gordon
"even my arse was gasp-in for air" made me chuckle and I'm glad you said that, makes me feel better the two times I have been up there near killed me!! Great camp, I loved the views with the clouds really moody and atmospheric would have been in my element with my camera!
I like this vid I got stuck on Hey Stacks with my 5 year old daughter and my dog. We had to get below the cloud and find a place to camp with as much shelter from the wind as we could. My daughter said, " daddy this is so much fun!' The wind and rain hit us hard. All day till the morning. And what a beautiful morning it was! I love carrying the world on my back
lovin all your uploads Paul...inspiring me to get out this year for sure..my last tent had bamboo poles so seeing what you use nowadays is a real help..thanks man.
From a brother Messner in Newcastle Australia i found your chan searching Tents in Storms. It has stopped raining in Oz ,climate change fantastic so it is cool to watch camping in the rain BLISS only a memory now thank you from William Scott Messner ,aka scoper1977, 4th generation southern hemisphere !!!
Get yourself up to Scotland Messner, give your equipment a real challenge. That was a gentle breeze. The Lake District is for boy scouts and geriatrics! Keep the video's coming. great content.
Love your videos mate very informative and all the stuff in the description helps alot, love how you choose high locations for the best view and extreme weather conditions. True outoors man, keep the good work up buddy.
i've been looking for a new tent to take cycle touring but was initially put off Hilleberg by the extra weight. Having watched this and a couple of other videos, I have decided they are well worth the extra weight and cost - thank you.
Fun, informative video! I spent a really (seriously!) fun night camping in Michigan a couple years back in wind like that and hard rain too. I had some larbars for dinner with a bottle of water. I just enjoyed the storm!
I love these videos. I'm fascinated how people camp in a tent during thunderstorms and blizzards, and how they stay warm and secure. Especially with high winds. It seems this tent held up alright, but I would still want a stronger tent. I'd be afraid of a high wind tearing that thing apart.
Darrell Anderson strongest tent there is the hilleberg soulo. It would take one hell of a wind to wreck it. In which case you wouldn’t be out in that kind of wind 😉
Love your videos and sense of humour. It's great seeing familiar favourite outdoor spots uploaded on RUclips. Amazing editing as well. The jump cut to the wind from inside the tent had me in stitches!
Great video, especially the Soulo tent. I'm going to research them now as I need a tent to cope with winds and is easy to pack. Thanks for good information.
Nice one Paul. Thanks for bringing us along again. Another stunning view from atop a mountain. Glad you managed to keep everything from blowing away and you just proved that there really is no substitute for good gear and knowledge. Buy the best you can afford and make sure you know how to use it! I always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one. ATB
Cheers Mike. If I had a lesser tent then I would have chosen a less exposed place to pitch. I know what the Hilleberg is capable of so had no doubts. Thanks for watching
Hi there, I’m enjoying your videos & finding them useful especially the reviews & tips, thank you for time and effort to help others to share your adventures.
There a few how to’s on You Tube but as one person states the canisters are definitely not designed for re filling yourself. I think I’d rather pay a £5 than have an epic fail somewhere in the back of beyond and on my own!
Great video as per usual I live in County Durham and am camping for the third time in Kielder this weekend can’t wait! You inspire me and relax me so much keep it up
Were the midges bad? We did a few wild camps there in the winter and it was brilliant but the midges put us off at the moment! Where do you normally pitch up?
I’ve just looked through the comments and have seen that you like every comment and respond to it. That’s really good considering how many comments there were, it just proves how good of a RUclipsr you are, keep on with the vids!!!
If someone comments on my videos and takes the time to watch, I do try and reply to the comments. I can't get everyone but I do set aside some time to get as many as possible. After all my channel wouldn't grow without the people that watch, like and comment. 👍
Well done for carrying on filming in such conditions Paul. Just shows how variable the weather can be and the importance of having decent kit. Well done!
Good video Paul.... Can I ask what you film on...? As your audio is crystal clear. I struggle with native GoPro sound and am looking at how to better my audio.
you are a brave man.you live life honestly.. आप एक बेहतरीन इंसान हैं और जिंदगी को कैसे जीना यह आप जानते हैं मैं भारत से हूं और आपकी कैंपिंग वीडियो मुझे बहुत पसंद आई

Really enjoyed that ! I bugger of on my motorbike on little adventure camping trips with more gadgets than the gadget show like you. Can’t wait until my next trip, appetite whetted by your video 😉 I took a little book of war poems by Siegfried Sassoon last time. Crazy reading those on your own in the middle of nowhere........
Another cracking vid mate although a sharp contrast to our camp, you win some you lose some however it still looked awesome mate. Plus its a good test of kit and skills. I think I'm due a rough one just for the craic tbh lol. Great got catch up oh and love the water collection method too. Anyways thanks for sharing and look forward to the next one. spk soon Steve
Cheers Stevie. It makes a change to get out in rough weather as well. It justifies having certain kit in my arsenal. Definitely chalk and cheese from the night before. Not a sniff other sunset or sunrise on this one. Looking forward to the next one already. See you soon mate 👍
Great video Paul, love seeing the Soulo in Action. That wind made me think of Dave's wild camping. Thanks for all the links to the products, makes it nice having the USA links.
I love The Lake District Paul, but it does like to leave it's mark on you once in a while. Part of it's charm I guess. Great footage as always mate..........atb Andy.
I'm looking for a tent for some time now but hard to find the one that tick's all the boxes, what would you recommend as I'm looking for a sturdy one that can withstand high winds of 40+ mph and with an 5000 hidrostatic for heavy rain, what do you think about backpacker pro from mountain warehouse?or should i go for cloud up 2?or do yuo have something else in mind?
Next time, do not camp on top of the hill. You usually can establish from where the wind and the weather, hits the area. Set the tent on the lee side of the mountain. A rock wall also helps.
Thanks for highlighting this. I am however aware of the best places to pitch. I've been doing this for a long time now and know the capability of my equipment. I wanted to make an entertaining video showing different conditions.
well, lets say it, this place is defenatly NOT where you want to pickdown your tent :D Too much weather exposure on top hills boys ! Avoid those even when the view is amazing ;) Cheers and hike safely !
I love this! I wish I was there. I'm going to be getting a tent and camping gear and I love seeing the clever and handy things that people utilize. That little air mattress is going on my list and the little stove is just perfect for tea! I can't wait!
Iv camped in the higjlandsvfor 9 months at a time in vango blades and banshees .. karrimor models similar to vango.s never had a leeky one , .. the annoying thing with vango is orange inner tents it plays havock with your vision after a few weeks .. the blue inners are easier on your eyes
Always learn something when I watch your vids. I've only had 3 nights wild camping so far. Now have a Torridon 200 but not yet used it. I picked up that good trick of rolling up the tent downwind when it's pegged out 👌
It was a tasty beverage actually Joss. I carry two sponges, one clean and one for mopping up dirty water and spillages. As for the tent it's still up to the job perfectly. Cheers again for watching mate
Man + Kit V Mother Nature . A well matched contest . *When folding down tent poles , make the first break in the centre and fold away from there 2 sections at a time . Apparently it's better for the pole and elastic . Who knows , just something I've always done .
Great video Paul, recently found your channel and really enjoying it! I’m thinking of getting the Helm 2 as I need space for 2 people, do you think it would have stayed in one piece in those winds?
The helm 2 is decent tent. It doesn't have as many guy out points as the Hilleberg so the larger panels can be exposed to wind. If it were me in the helm I would have pitched the tent in a more protected area. It is still a great tent and would serve you well for wild camping in the UK
Great video mate. Despite the wind it still looked like it was worth going up. I've got the Thermarest pump and had it a year or so now. Works well but I think build quality for price is a bit poor but it does the job well so far so good. I do have a bit of a stove problem (ie too many) and I do like the look of yours. I do like ones which have a nice wide pot stand, it's gotta be able to take a frying pan! My current favourite is the Coleman Fyrestorm but it's not my lightest at 136g but very good bit of kit. All bar the wind I'd call that a cracking night, scenery there is amazing with or without cloud. I highly recommend for windy nights like that, silicone earplugs... they are infinitely better than the foam ones, an absolute godsend
top tip. rather than the thermarest pump just make a bin liner with a end that fits the valve, open to fill with air then scrunch and fill thermarest. will be up in about a min and weighs nothing. all the best G :-)
Cheers Rob. I do have thermarest inflating dry bag. It works the same as the bin liner but obviously much stronger. I just wanted to show the audience a different option. Thanks for watching
I'm a bit jealous everytime I see that hilleberg but I have to keep reminding myself that it's a 7lb tent. Lol! You must be nuts to lug a 7lb tent all the way up there. Still...
Msr reactor windburner..should be a better choice than the jetboil... And for getting your own coffee equipment, you might also want to consider a grinder..porlex os a good start😀
I would love to do Northern Ireland. I went to Connemara on the west coast of Ireland and the countryside is spectacular. I'm sure the northern area is just as beautiful
Just passing by your channel, goodness I'm just glad you're safe! Amazing view and the wind reminds me of tropical storm back home in my childhood. *expat from Phils🇵🇭, now living in CA 🇨🇦

Thank you Ryan. Very kind words
Great production as ever. Wow very wild camp. Not sure a lesser tent would have put up with such a battering. Thanks for sharing. All the best Pete
Cheers Pete I'm glad you found the video informative. I agree that not all tents would have stood up to that
These videos are so soothing , like the Bob Ross of camping ⛺️
I'm going to have to Google Bob Ross 😂
Do get back to me 😂 is gd thing man +paulmessner
Hilliberg is the only tent that ever leaked in me. Vango has never let me down.
I've only had Vango tents, they do the job. If it's an anagram for Govan, then they mus be hardy lol...

Good video.
Staking out the chair! That's some tough campin mate! LOL
Hi there, I’m enjoying your videos & finding them useful especially the reviews & tips, thank you for time and effort to help others to share your adventures.
Dunno if it's been mentioned buts it's possible to refill the gas canisters using a wee adapter. There's some vids on it. Not something I've done.
I've got one of those adaptors and they work ok. I have found sometimes a loss of pressure though in reused canisters.
There a few how to’s on You Tube but as one person states the canisters are definitely not designed for re filling yourself. I think I’d rather pay a £5 than have an epic fail somewhere in the back of beyond and on my own!

I'll try the earplugs. Thanks for the info
Well I'll be damned..earplugs I never thought of, I'll try if the noise is too much but do love the naturalness of noise too. Good tip, thanks😊
@@Ps-tc9ko most nights I don't use them, but when wind is battering your tent you'll be glad you packed them trust me 👍
Good channels mr Paul,,greetings from Indonesia 🙏🙏🙏
top tip. rather than the thermarest pump just make a bin liner with a end that fits the valve, open to fill with air then scrunch and fill thermarest. will be up in about a min and weighs nothing. all the best G :-)
Cheers Rob. I do have thermarest inflating dry bag. It works the same as the bin liner but obviously much stronger. I just wanted to show the audience a different option. Thanks for watching
Brilliant paul all the best G👍
I'm a bit jealous everytime I see that hilleberg but I have to keep reminding myself that it's a 7lb tent. Lol! You must be nuts to lug a 7lb tent all the way up there. Still...
Msr reactor windburner..should be a better choice than the jetboil...
And for getting your own coffee equipment, you might also want to consider a grinder..porlex os a good start😀
Nice spot mate! I do love my Akto but always wish I’d gone for the soulo now... only subbed yesterday so binge watching a few 👍🏼 Ant (antswildcamping)
Glad you are enjoying the videos Ant. Solo is a great tent but I wouldn't worry about it as your akto will stand up to the same conditions
what size rucksack would you recommend for a 1 night wild camp 2 day hike ?
This may help you out.

@@PaulMessner thanks Paul I’ve had a watch, I’m thinking of an osprey aether ag or atmos ag around 60 litre capacity 👍🏼
That was taking the tent down in strong wind, I was hoping to see it put up, in strong wind
"I think I went overboard with the brandy." made me burst out laughing. Wet humour. 🤣💧
Awesome, you've combined reviews with location, perfect. Check out my stunning views, might tempt you over to northern Ireland 😁😁 😁
*expat from Phils🇵🇭, now living in CA 🇨🇦
love the harsh condition of the weather to test camping gear! yeah
Like watching your videos, good to see folk enjoying the countryside these days.
All the best
Cheers Steve. I love getting outdoors in all weathers
