  • I go for a solo overnight in the rain camping with a £100 pocket survival kit to see if it is any good. Heavy rain sets in for the majority of day 1, so I had to setup shelter first then look to get fire going. Thanks for joining me on this camping trip!

Mike, maybe it's just me, but I would love to see how you organize all your camping gear wherever it is you store it at home, and maybe even given us a sort of inventory. You have SOOO many different stoves, tents, tarps, lamps, cordage, etc. I would find it fascinating to see how you organize it all (assuming, of course, that you do, hahaha) and perhaps walk us thru how you decide which item of gear you choose for the many different conditions in which you use it. I am horribly OCD when it comes to my own storage situations (hell, not just about storage!), so seeing how someone else keeps their gear organized would be very interesting to me.

I like the idea of putting together three survival kits based on the ones you've tested
    1. Altoids pocket tin always in your front pocket always.
    2. Day hike or away from home for more than 10 hours fits in your cargo pocket. Always in your outing jacket always
    3. Over 12 hours away from home slip in satchel or overnight bag. Always in pack and/or car alway
All about the same size slightly growing each time. Ideally using the same size containers you tested
That way, as you go out and just naturally add layers, you add survival kits the further you plan on going the more they will just be there
More fish hooks, more needles, better strikers better whistles, tape added to surfaces, etc
each one decked out to add to the next. I'd love to see your style.
Ultimately three complete mini survival kits

It’s not surprising that a respectable company like ESEE Would put together a kit with some reasonably good equipment, especially the knives that are their specialty. But the contents of the kit variable, one wonders if they should sell it as a kind of subscription, more like Bespoke Post: they simply send you new pieces of equipment as they’re rotated in and out, and you can customize it yourself.

Something to try. Instead of blowing an air mattress by mouth… I use a 13 gallon garbage bag, one bottom corner cut. Secured to inflate valve with a rubber band or hair tie and push air in with the bag. It’s way faster and will save the mattress long term, less moisture inside

I still have my survival kit (tin) from when I was in. We weren’t issued them then, we were just taught to make our own and we kept them in tobacco’s tins, which was naturally reflective inside (signalling) Mine has a small tin in the tin which was just where I kept and made char cloth. Fero rod (knife always on me so not in tin), puri tabs for water, serrated blade, wire saw, small button compass, fishing wire (not a fishing kit as I found no use for it, I never have been a great fisherman so I accepted why go with one if I can’t catch one with a decent rod and reel ffs). It’s still got the needles but the threads gone now - I probably used it or lost it). I do notice that these days Survival Kits seem to be all about surviving in a location where as ours we made were all about stuff to help you get back home and not stay put. So in mine I kept a bit of local currency as well in the form of some notes in a bit of paper. I keep thinking I used to have a small pencil in there too at one point but it’s not in it any more if I did. When I first made it I also had a small glass lense from a canabalised scope. Lost that too along the way. Finally my tin was packed out with toilet paper. Mainly to stop any rattle but also the luxury element 😊. And none of that razor sharp paper stuff either the Army gave us in our ration packs, the nice soft stuff 😂,
No I had no whistles or fancy stuff you see nowadays in these commercial versions. Mine was just to help give me the chance of getting back to my side of the lines if the proverbial finally hit the rotating blade thing.

not only do I love these style of videos, I wish my buddy and I could camp with you. He showed me your channel...I don't think its worth $100 or thereabouts...if so, it needs to have more items of use in it. however whats there could help you survive for a few days and that may be all you need until you find rescue...either way...the best survival kit is training. BEFORE you go camping, and this is to anyone interested but hasnt done it or are still new. Read books, practice knots, have a basic list of items to survive on. aka light, strong knife, water collection system, paracord, waterproof boots, extra warm clothes if during the fall, pay attention to weather reports, learn to make a fire from many different methods, do all that before you go.
Again, great video man! love your channel and work! if you wanna come camp in the US, shoot me an email or something, and we can get linked up. My buddy and I know of some gorgeous spots in VA, itd be a blast to have you with us. CHEERS!

That's a great kit. I'd rather have a handful of good quality bits of gear over some of the extra bits that you wouldn't need short term. If your goal is to carry something that can get you through 24-48 hours and then get rescued, it's fantastic.
Fishing and procuring food is not a big priority until you're lost over a week. Short term, protection from the elements and safe water are your priorities.

Y'know what's fun about those whirl-pak bags? If you buy a pack of them, there's a note on the pack saying "Warning This product can expose you to chemicals including Aniline, which is know to the State of California to cause cancer.", but when people buy a pack, split it up and sell it in survival packs, they often forget to pass that info on to the end user.

well on the bright side California (probably) issues carcinogen warnings on normal atmospheric gases. Their cancer warnings are usually (but not always) a big steaming load of crap or based on very unrealistic consumption quantities. Warning: if you eat 400 metric tons of this substance at a single setting 5 out of 350 million of you might grow an extra eyeball on your forehead.
Europe isn't any better; they ban Concord grape products as a potential carcinogen. similar unrealistic consumption quantity issues and coincidentally because people make wine and other competitive products out of it. things which in a very minor way might cut into European wine making and other industries.

18:16 You don't need to fill the water bag and pour the contents into a jug to measure the bag's capacity. Unless Mike has unusually small or large hands, the flat bag looked to be about 10cm by 30cm, which would give a surface area (front and back) of 600 square centimetres. A litre is a 1000 cubic centimetres, so a one-litre cube measures 10cm on each side, and therefore has six 100 square centimetre faces. Hence the bag, even though it is cylindrical when full, is going to hold about one litre.

Personally, I would disagree about the torch. Firstly, you should have your own torch separate from the kit and if you lost it on the way, I'd be surprised you hadn't lost this kit as well. Secondly, in a survival situation, night time is not the time to be foraging or doing anything away from camp. In the darkness lurks dangers. Stay at camp, conentrate on sleep and conserving energy and at first light, start the foraging. That's my view anyway. Nice little kit though! I agree about the fishing hook and line for sure.

I hope you enjoy making this kind of videos, if not just stop. There are so many other people/channels doing just this kind of survival kit tests. But I really find this kind of videos entertaining, not as much as the old school bushcraft videos. And the builds was so cool to watch. And the ww inspired ones. One idea, give one of the survival fishing kits to your dad, if he can’t get a fish with that it’s not worth having. I mean he uses old locks and random things he finds in the garage 😂and still gets more fish than I ever do.

Adirondack style shelter, my usual go to on my not so frequent overnights. Used my 3.5x3.5 DD last weekend with a raised bed underneath. Gasefier stove is great I have one but they do need constant fuel addition.

Quality my fail I would honestly put together before buying that kit Mike, that way I could pop in one of those pen rods and tiny reels, one of them small lights and lots more for 100 quid, nice to see you doing these though as you get an idea of what to put in your own personal kit, and see if we come up with a similar kit as yourself, Good game this now check and make sure Smith is behaving himself, sorry Grahame I just couldn't help myself. Jim from Scotland, remember TA Fishing such a good channel as well as Mikes.

There is not much call for a survival kit in the UK, but the fun does come in making up your own. Multiple ways to make up fire is always an asset. What do you think of the small BCB compass or better still the miniature Silva Ranger SL? And if you are going to pack a decent sized folding knife, an SAK farmer will be better than that Esee own brand knife there with the added bonus that it will always be street legal in most situations.

I know exactly where that is ,( won't say of course but it's BH ) . Have camped in that area very often. There are islands in that patch that offer more privacy but are tricky to access . Surprised you were not moved along there as busy spot . Much more hidden bits but not as pretty as being next to the lake.

That stove will burn for a long time if you pack it full of sticks and light it from the top. That's how it was designed to be used.
