Hey Paul , if you're ever in the need for video ideas , I'd love a guide on proper gear maintenance : how to properly dry out gear , best storage methods , how to care for rainflys etc
Chuck mine over a clothes horse for a day with the central heating on.
Yes! Proper boot care, cleaning waterproofs, drying out down gear that has accidentally got wet, storing down sleeping bags.
I’ve googled it all but most are articles trying to sell you products or it’s someone’s blog and the advice is lost in some lengthy story of their backpacking trip.
Great shout
@@NoahSaunders29 My Rab Ascent down sleeping bag comes with a pretty large material storage bag. You should not store down compressed, when you are not using it, I keep mine in the storage bag in my loft, have done for years. It gets used a couple of times and year and performs perfectly.
There is something magical about the hills during cold frosty weather.
Yep, no tourists spoiling the tranquility
Absolutely
Well Paul, Im now twice your age I reckon; at the age of 80, looking forward to getting out there to see the Sunrise coming up over the horizon! Good on you for stimulating us all! Enjoy! ⛺️🌞👣👍😎
Wow, and I was worrying about starting this wild camping park at 65…😂😂😂🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍
I'm a mere 61, but lying in bed with a slipped disk!...I envy you 😀
@@happysporran I’m very sorry to hear that; hope you get better soon! 👍☘️🦉😊
As a farmer, the first thing in my mind was, “My cows and horses would love that grass!!” Nice stream at the end. Thanks for taking us along. 🥰🥰🥰
Just curious, as your a farmer how do you feel about people camping on your land? I grew up on a farm and my grandfather wouldn't tolerate it. Though I now have a different view as long as permission sought, and no trace left.
I have cows and horses, and they can be spooked easily and injure you, especially at night if something is in the field and they start running. (We have bear, coyotes, rare - but mountain lions, etc.) So, hard pass. 😵💫😵💫😵💫 My farm backs up to 4,000 acres of a state park, so there are plenty of places to camp there. 🥰
True, with livestock on arable land could be dangerous for all, we have a few hundred acres of wood land which we loved as kids and still love to this day. And the farm is in a valley in north wales so plenty of areas to camp away from the pastures.
Oh, and we don't have any dangerous wild animals as such in uk either, wouldnt fancy a bear popping its head in my tent!lol
This is the weather that camping was made for. I bet you enjoyed it no end mate 😁
Lovely scenery up there Paul. There's nothing quite to beat the feeling you get when you crawl into your tent for the first time and get out of the freezing blast of cold air.
Was in the Campsies over Xmas.
Peace and quiet...utter bliss.
The tubular bandage for the gas cannister is a stroke of genius and something I'll be adding to my kit.
Thanks for the tip!
Here's one in return...Potassium Permanganate.
Can be bought at most aquarium/pet shops or online.
Two grains purifies a ltr of water.
Stains it pink to purple.
Antibacterial, antifungal, so can be drank, (after twenty mins but I leave it forty-five mins), used to cook, bathe, wash clothes, treat wounds and wash dressings.
Great for athlete's foot, trenchfoot, etc.
It's use by some countries to purify their national water systems.
As a bonus it also removes two heavy metals.
The bigger, added, bonus though, is it's fire starting ability.
A small heap with a few drops of glycerine dripped onto it (baking aisle in supermarkets) creates an incredible heat in a matter of seconds that runs a few thousand degrees high.
Disclaimer: _Avoid breathing in the fumes, which last a few seconds!_
Failing glycerine, granulated sugar will do in equal measure to to PotPer.
Mix them both by scraping them together with a twig.
*Don't use your bare fingers or the hot flame will melt them off!* 🔥😳😂
I wouldn't advise it as a permanent and only means of purifying water, alternating with bleach/chlorine, iodine and boiling, as I do, but weight-wise I find it next to nothing and a small phial goes a long, long way.
Anyone interested can Google it.
Along with other stuff mentioned, it's worth remembering it may purify water from a river, stream, puddle, even a septic tank...but water will still require filtering.
Thanks for uploading!
Couldn’t decide whether to get out this weekend and then you post this. Might need to get my gear off the loft tonight.
What a glorious day / night to get out there....as long as you have a few layers on to keep warm!
Thanks for taking us along, I camped in similar conditions this week, wish I’d known about the bandage gas tip
That is one of your most calming videos Paul. Really enjoyable.
You have some setup, great tips for anyone who is thinking about camping. It is so good of you to allow others into your private world, very inspiring.
As much as I love spring and summer hiking, there’s something stunningly beautiful about winter hiking. I just love being out this time of year.
The other day I desided to test out a new tent and sleep outside in it.
As by the weather forecast I prepared for down to -20.
It turned out it was only just -4 and I wast way, way, way to hot 😀
No wind at all. That helps.
Well I've only complained twice in my life.
Once when a friend actually died from the cold in about -25 C and the other time was on Vatnajökull in a snowstorm.
We go camping not to escape life...it is so life does not escape us. Paul, you are so ecstatic first thing in the morning....great view.
Luv it….luv it…..luv it 🥰! Nice one Paul, it really doesn’t get better than this 👌👍
Fun to see what winter camping like on other side of the pond!
Especially fun in AZ where winter tries to exist haha
What a stunning morning and sunrise. 🌞
Terrific conditions Paul. Loved the tubi-grip to warm the gas canister idea too. Cheers, Chris
I swear by HotHands. Get a pair activated and in your pocket as you start the hike. Then any time during or after putting your tent up you can have 5 minutes with your hands in your pockets and take the edge off. Another great adventure, thanks for taking us with you.
Another good one Paul, i have felt the freezing temperatures for myself on a few walks, definitely need winter gear...
Fantastic video. Cold clear weather, great scenery and warm winter kit is an enviable mix. 😊
Wonderful Paul, thank you ❤
The best weather to camp in, I absolutely love it. The Neoair is my go to mat, I find it comfy and toasty.
Fingers crossed I will be in the lakes Monday and Tuesday so may check that area out instead of my usual haunts.
Great vid Paul. Well done on braving the harsh British winter. The tent looks amazing, solid! ATB xx
What a lovely overnight camping trip! Very scenic area!
Hi Paul. Great to see you out and about enjoying the beautiful scenery. Fantastic video as always. thank you for sharing.
Happy New Year. Having worked shifts for years and only had one weekend off in four I can agree with you that it's far less busy mid week when you want to go somewhere.
Thanks Paul.
Middle aged tubster 😂😂😂 great video again mate, definitely a cold one. Hope you’re well mate, Si
I think your brilliant and brave Paul
Happy days. Enjoyed that. Cheers..👏
That’s more like it, Paul!
"...middle aged tubster..."! I almost spat my coffee. Well done, good vid. Stay safe.
Wow Paul what a sunrise 🌅 to wake up to! Awesome vid as always all the best for 2022. 👍🏻
You got fabulous weather. Went up on 28th and had to bail the weather was so horrendous! Lovely to watch this with central heating 😃
Nothing better than seeing a new video on my sub box
I almost did this walk this past weekend!I was at North Lees campsite Sunday-Tuesday, I would've still been there till Friday but unfortunately my sleeping bag let me down. Thought it best to retreat home to the warm! So cool that I'm not the only nut camping this time of year 😂. Keep up your good work Paul, hopefully I'll get to bump into you someday ✌
Neat trick with the tubular bandage, definitely one to put in the tool box👍 Thanks Paul, stay safe out there. Regards from deepest Dorset 👍
I'm not too sure about this one because much of the cold radiates from inside the canister so insulating it could trap the cold in. I suppose the effectiveness depends on the outside temp.
@@jamesparsons9437 perhaps the best idea is to put it on before you leave home?
I certainly remember back in the day that the old bluet stoves didn’t work well at cold temperatures so something to help should be a good idea?
loved this video , my new years resolution is to get outdoors more often and start wild camping , im watching loads of videos and get as many tips as I can , I live the tubigrip around the gas canister I would never of know that , thanks
Paul last year I was in ICU and your channel kept me going. Now I am back in ICU again kept them coming and thank you. John
What a great camp
All to yourself and toasty warm
Almost encouraged me out for the weekend ! But I will wait for dry days if possible.
Keep em coming
Thank you for the inspiration for 2022
suggestion for food... fry minced lamb with a good fat content then mix in a couple of raw eggs yolks. amazing nutrition, yummy, quick+easy and no need for unhealthy carbs that pack on timber! the good fat gives you plenty of energy.
great channel.
Outstanding Paul . Fantastic views . The Xtherm looks the business 👌👌
I was up there Xmas day ...gale force winds but the messner bobble hat kept mi toasty warm ...👍
Another cracking vid with an awesome sun rise!! Happy New Year Mr Messner!! Keep making um!!!
Awesome. No flies or snakes that time of year. 🇦🇺👍🍺🍺
Great vid as always Paul and you can’t go wrong with being up near jacobs ladder, I love it up there👌🏼👌🏼
Just purchased the 2022 version of the Scarpe 1 Paul, i cant wait for it to arrive it looks a superb piece of kit. How are you liking yours. I have the x therm pad and it is absolutely superb keeps your warm down to the coldest of temps. Have a great year mate!
That was a good watch mate. 👍🏻
Stay safe 🙂
Just a brilliant video paul loved all the gear especially the quilt , I try and get out as much as possible inbetween fishing, golf, and my dogs, but definitely going to up my game and invest in some quality gear cheers Paul a great video appreciated all the best marra stay safe 👌 🏕
Thanks pal. Might get into the fishing again and do a bit of catch and cook 😂
Amazing Paul 👍
Incidentally Paul. Thin fingerless gloves, will keep your fingers surprisingly warm and functional.👍🏾😉
Excellent video enjoyed watching
Thanks Paul
Your freezing temperature is quite warm for us in Québec ( Canada ) ;) Nice place to camp and beautiful sunrise ! Thanks for the video
Another fantastic video Paul! I have to say, I love all your videos but these are my favourites - just the basic camp from start to finish, amazing content!
I was completely immersed in this one, thanks Paul. We're under-kitted to take on anything below zero but absolutely itching to get back out there, inspired by this. All the best!
Hi Paul, I have a little carabiner on one of the tie outs at the end, I would like to have in the wind. So it is easy to identify and I can attach the tent to my backpack during setup to prevent flying away.
Happy New Year Paul, thank you once again for bringing us a some great coverage of your wild camping adventure.
Bright dry and cold are my IDEAL conditions for heading out!! Great edit this Paul 👍
Thanks Paul for the tip on covering the fuel canister with tube-grip 👍🏻
Really good to see the difference in temperature between outside and in the tent, beautiful sunrise.
Love your vids pal, thank you
Heyup Paul m8, when it's cold, like it was...
Put the water bottle(s) upside down in your boots(long as the bottle doesn't leak). Then the water freezes the opposite way round and when u turn the bottle right way up ,water should pour okay ..👍
Looking forward to you getting back to cooking the steaks, salmon and asparagus in the Spring!
Freeeeezing mate! Enjoyed that.
Good work!
Another great video Paul. Nice to watch in a warm room. Thank you and all the best for 2022. Stay Safe.
wow what a view !!! all thats missing is a motorbike ha ha ha ha great info . thx
Beautiful video!
Cracking video Paul, with some stunning views 👍 keep them coming 😁
Brave man, how warm were you during the night? Wonderful part of the Peak District only wish I lived there and not in Suffolk.
Thanks for another camping adventure and kit try out.
I watched a video you made last year up Kinder Scout in the woolpacks, it inspired me to try it myself, the Kinder area is stunning. I'd never tried wild camping before, I couldn't have asked for better conditions and I couldn't believe my luck, Short Eared Owls are up there! not sure if you've ever seen them? They're so curious and fly over and check you out, such an amazing experience all thanks to you. I'm slowly accumulating some winter gear to experience winter camping, it's a slow process as it's not cheap! Later this year fingers crossed 🤞 Thanks Paul 😊
Its the escape from day to day life that appeals.... And that sunrise.... Nice video
I was told that wrapping the gas canister up only makes things worse for it as the expanding gas inside the canister causes it to get colder than ambient.
Sock on beforehand when warmer to retain heat, take off when using
New Thermo rest is a good one Paul eh!
Glad you showed it. That's a top overnighter. Good effort Paul.
From Craig.
Great video Paul 👍
"...a little bit nippy." Love the British understatement.
From one middle aged tubster to another, I'm heading into the Southern Alps soon, current overnight lows just above freezing with virtually no wind.... I'll be thinking of you
Great spot you picked there Paul. Nice and quiet too. 👍🏻
11:17 That’s what it’s all about. Out in the elements. Great video Paul 👍
So magical that sun rise
Hey Paul. Tip for you.
On the food packs, you can pull out the bottom flaps.
Makes them alot more stable while standing on the ground.
Great video Paul. I enjoy watching winter camp videos more than any other. For a few reasons really, but mainly because it's very cosy, sat in my pjs, watching others suffer in the cold 😅 But winter camps are my favourite. No better feeling than firing up that stove for a hot drink. All the best for 2022 👍🏻 - Alistair (Llanelli, south Wales).
That's a great tip with the tubular bandage & the gas canister 👌
I have the exped 9 LW, very pleased with it.
Love your winter camping. I got no winter tent, if i put a tarp over a regular tent, wuld it be closer to a winter tent.
Nice to see you on the Xtherm Paul! I just got myself the Xtherm max and can’t wait to test it out 👍
Another great video 👌🏽
That sunrise takes your breath away 🏕☀️
Love the scenery Paul..
Stunning pal
Great Video but that looked cold well done
Thanks Paul for the video. I love wintetcamping, its calm and the colours are amazing!
Hats off to you for making multiple trips up for those camera shots.
Great stuff
Can’t beat a winter camp over, nice one Paul 🥾⛺️⛰
Definitely going to get a Scarp 1
Really makes me want to go winter camping after watching this 👍
