  • Today, I'm modding this Akko Mod007v2. The goal is to use frequency response measurements to get this to sound as similar to my Mode Eighty First Edition (2020) as possible. Because this was an aluminum case, I thought it would be a good starting point. I'm happy with how it turned out.
    Products Mentioned:
    Akko MOD007v2: bit.ly/AkkoMod...
    Gaffer's Tape I Used: amzn.to/3vXFXIs
Mode Eighty First Edition - bit.ly/ModeDes...
Keycaps (I used a combination of both dark and light color ways): amzn.to/3BsFzos
    KBDIY Fantasy Poison/Virus Switches: bit.ly/KBDiyFa...
Parts of this are recorded using binaural microphones, so use headphones if you can. These are the ones I recommend, just because they have an accurate frequency response out of the box. amzn.to/3abe7AN
I've calibrated my microphones, so you will get a better idea of the true sound.
Binaural Mics (manually calibrated to flat): amzn.to/3QoZ1bc
    Calibrated Measurement Mic: bit.ly/UMIK-1Ca...

I was totally confused when I saw your face on this video! I was like: “Wait. I thought this was a keyboard video. What’s Joe doing here?” Good to know there are others like you who are into audio and keyboards! I dig it!

This is awesome -- glad the algorithm brought this up to me. This level of analysis is very welcome in a hobby where sound is so important. I look forward to watching your other videos.
EDIT: Cutting out a question I had that I realized was covered later in the video!

Yes, sounds, tinkering, mechanical stuff, well-made stuff, novelty items, things that are functionally better in some way.

Retaining space between the PCB and the bottom of the case/foam also significantly affects the stiffness -- though in my experience it's very nuanced except in boards with flex cuts in the PCB and plate, and gasket mounting points (or another mounting style altogether) that are more flexible. But I still really appreciate this deep analysis of the impact on sound, and the tradeoffs we make with typing feel.

yes! a channel not using thocky and clacky as a reference for a sound sig.. then use feelings and subjective feelings to distinguish a clearly objective sound (only if you have no ear problem of course)

I was thinking of switching my silicon gasket gloves to poron. Do you think it makes much diffrence flex wise? Do you feel pushing keys much less stiffer?

So the final mod is just 1 layer of tape mod?

unless you're also measuring the mode without the top case you wont get a fair comparison
