MOD with Me! Akko MOD007 v2 with Frequency Response Graphs
Today, I'm modding this Akko Mod007v2. The goal is to use frequency response measurements to get this to sound as similar to my Mode Eighty First Edition (2020) as possible. Because this was an aluminum case, I thought it would be a good starting point. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Accurate Keyboard Sound Tests with Calibrated Mics - Binaural vs. Close Mic | Keyboard ASMR
Просмотров 4572 года назад
Here are some sound demos showing the audible differences between calibrated binaural mics at a typical listening distance (realistic) vs. a calibrated mic 1ft (ca. 30 cm) away (sounds awesome, but not what we're likely to hear in daily use.) Use headphones to get the full effect. You will not hear the spatial aspects of binaural using speakers of any sort. It needs to be headphones or earbuds....

Tape Mod Effect on Frequency Response ft. iLovBee i61 Mechanical Keyboard | Binaural Sound Test

I wanted to see what difference the tape mod would have on the frequency response of this budget iLovBee i61 keyboard. I know you're not sitting on 1m likes, but the experiment here is a Good beginning to a series that could potentially go much further.
I love that you took the time to do this. The best kind of nerdy.
yes! a channel not using thocky and clacky as a reference for a sound sig.. then use feelings and subjective feelings to distinguish a clearly objective sound (only if you have no ear problem of course)
tbh in my opinion he downgraded it but he was obviously going for a different sound profile than i would.
Hey man, What watch is that?
My k8 pro sounds nothing like that :0
You gotta fill that spacebar with something. If I'm not mistaken they sell pads to put inside there. I ordered my K8 pro and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I kinda don't like the sounds I'm hearing here though. I hope I can fix it and make it sound like my custom LK68
I was thinking of switching my silicon gasket gloves to poron. Do you think it makes much diffrence flex wise? Do you feel pushing keys much less stiffer?
What software is this?? Awesome!
Where to find the software for ilovebee
You should definitely try burger mounting it if you haven't. Helps take away some of that aluminum hallow *thomp* or *echoy* sound, and makes it more clear overall. I have a video on my channel for reference
unless you're also measuring the mode without the top case you wont get a fair comparison
can you share more details on that cool field watch, love the dial and did you do any changes to that as well.
Sorry, may I ask the application name that you have used to compare spacebars frequencies, please?

Retaining space between the PCB and the bottom of the case/foam also significantly affects the stiffness -- though in my experience it's very nuanced except in boards with flex cuts in the PCB and plate, and gasket mounting points (or another mounting style altogether) that are more flexible. But I still really appreciate this deep analysis of the impact on sound, and the tradeoffs we make with typing feel.
This is awesome -- glad the algorithm brought this up to me. This level of analysis is very welcome in a hobby where sound is so important. I look forward to watching your other videos. EDIT: Cutting out a question I had that I realized was covered later in the video!
So the final mod is just 1 layer of tape mod?
I noticed the exact same behavior with the space button on my k8. Waiting for new keycaps to try out. Had slightly better results with a Gateron G Pro Black Switch against the stock Gateron Brown. Nice approach & video
Did the same - changed the spacebar switch from gateron pro brown to pro black; also filled the two notches between the switch and the stabilizers with some silicone inserts I had in TH80 - the sound got much better.
I was totally confused when I saw your face on this video! I was like: “Wait. I thought this was a keyboard video. What’s Joe doing here?” Good to know there are others like you who are into audio and keyboards! I dig it!
Ha! Yeah, it's a nice change of pace to try something else.

I was expecting the boominess to go away with the binaural mics but it sounds like it's coming from your desk and not the mics itself. I'd wager a mousepad would fix/reduce the effect. I find it interesting that the tonality is effected that much by using the umik-1. How much of that is due to it being binaural vs distance to ear vs just tonality of the mic itself?
You are correct that it's mostly the desk. I film some of these in my garage on a tool workstation. A desk mat is the answer. Binaural is likely to have less bass just because it's further away. The change in tonality is mostly to do with distance. If I put the binaural mics close, it would likely sound very similar.
How long till we get the switch leaderboard lol? I'm surprised at how similar they all sounded, wasn't until the PBT keycaps that I could hear a clearer difference. Good stuff.
Oh you already know my plan
Further confirms that having a full sized mousepad does indeed improve the sound thanks to it being thin sheet of rubber. Obviously need to have a somewhat thicker mousepad and not like Steelseries qck, I use the LTT mousepad which is decently squishy and actually makes it hard to show off the gasket design on my board because I get a decent amount of flex just from the mousepad.
I'm in the market for a large deskpad
Are you setting the mic stand feet on the desk? I can hear the sound of you bottoming out the keyboard resonating the desk and what I assume is going back into the mic via it's stand. Before we know it you'll be tuning keyboards to a modified harmon curve haha.
Mic is decoupled from the desk completely.
Prefered B. A sounded cheap, B sounded more muted and C had a more lively sound. I'm guessing A is cheap one, B is your K8pro and C is that expensive one. Time to watch past 0:54. Ok I was wrong all same keyboard lol
Hey just realized you made a second channel. How many layers of tape did you use? I heard the amount of layers alters the sound some. I tried tape modding my Q3 but prefered the more muted sound that it has when stock. Time to binge the rest of your videos lol.
01:22 your modded Mod007 gave me goosebumps in a good way!
Wow, that's awesome to hear!!!
spacebar sounds a bit ticky might want to check it out
It has a high pitched "ping," but it's oddly pleasing with the other keys for some reason.
Would love to see more of these measurements for more switches. Ideally there'd be a database with measurements for every switch with standardized tests. They might not sound the same in our boards but at least we'll be able to compare switches relative to each other.
You got it!
You love sounds. All sounds. ❤❤❤
Yes, sounds, tinkering, mechanical stuff, well-made stuff, novelty items, things that are functionally better in some way.

You know we appreciate you!!!

Which one? I tested them and they work for me.
@@keyboardacoustics6264 they all worked for me too
What space mod are you referring to? You didn't even show that. Kinda annoying when you mention that and didn't even show it in your video. Kinda lame video in a way honestly. 🤦♂😒
If you want to change the sound, change the spacebar from the stock one. That's the point. And if showing objective measurements to show the difference is lame to you, we'll I don't know what to tell you. Maybe my videos are just not for you, and that's fine. Your comment is kinda lame to me honestly.
Sorry for my english, but I have a question.... Is possible to mod the original space bar keycap, for example with a Dremel, to avoid the touching with the switch? And another question... Where you put the Gaffer tape? Inside the space Keycap?. Thanks for your video and time...

I like the binaural sound more to be honest
The binaural recording sounds more like what I hear when I type. The mic placed closer gives more of that impressive, clean sound people seem to go for on RUclips sound tests.
I was about to open up my i61, gonna watch this first!
I think the most effective mods on this have been tape mod, clipping the stabilizer feet, and stuffing it to the brim with thin yoga mat material. Switching to thicker PBT Keycaps gives a deeper tone if you're looking for that. If not, the stock ones keep the higher pitch.
@@keyboardacoustics6264 Awesome! thanks
@@keyboardacoustics6264 I may get one tomorrow as a gift so if I do I cant wait to try some of those mods :)

SOUNDS GODLY
Not bad considering it’s a budget build. If you plan on spending a lot on a keeb I recommend aluminum case and switches like the durock poms or the hyperglide mx black. Nice work for overall :)
I just got the Akko Mod007 V2 for another project.
Try something like the mode65 or mode80. Both are very viable for a great keyboard
I have a Mode Eighty First Edition. I love it. This Mod007 V2 is impressive too.
great video. i use this keyboard and i like them alot. for the price, it's probably the best. to me, i don't think tape mod is worth it for the benefit you get for the time & effort.
It seemed pretty easy to do. I'm glad you're enjoying yours.
Hi, thank you for stating that the switch won't sound the same with a different keycap but I think you should really at the very least put that switch in an acrylic switch tester, a standard budget board like a gk61 would be even better, it's going to sound MILES different from your fingers than in an actual board since fingers are squishy and squishy things absorb sound. Just my suggestion though
One of my goals was to use a simple method that others could recreate with some level of consistency. I figured holding it between our fingers would be the simplest solution since the dampening effect of our fingertips is minimal compared to how loud the switch is near the mic. The sound changes even just by placing a keycap. I've experimented with placing it in a piece of foam to isolate just the switch by itself but that led to the switch moving too much creating other issues. None of the methods are perfect because the fact that the switch needs to be held in place means there will be interaction with whatever it's in contact with. I have an acrylic switch tester coming in later today. I'll experiment with it. The only potential problem I see is perhaps the size of the acrylic or thickness might affect the sound significantly. Given the choice to couple the sound to something that change the sound in various ways (i.e. acrylic tester, PCB, or barebones keyboard) vs. something that dampens the original sound (I.e. our finger tips,) I prefer to choose the latter. I could be totally wrong and may find that the tester gives more repeatable results. We'll see. That's what's great about using a scientific approach; I'm proven wrong all the time. That's how we improve the process.
@@keyboardacoustics6264i see your reasoning but i wouldn't say the fingers are just turning down the volume on the switch. keyboards change the sound by reflecting and absorbing certain ranges differently right? The same happens for your fingers, i think a lot of the switches being tested are losing a lot of their bass frequencies to that. I appreciate that you're going to do further testing with the acrylic tester, I think that even if it doesn't sound exactly like a keyboard its going to sound a lot closer than fingers.
It sounds like you have a good amount of experience with keyboards, so I appreciate the guidance. I'm new to keyboards, but not to audio. Keyboards change the sound because the materials interact and their resonant frequencies can sum and cancel. They don't always add up like some people think. So the more components I add, the more interactions I have to take into account. For example, an acrylic tester can accentuate certain frequencies and change the tonal balance. It's not amplifying all the sounds equally. At the same time, my fingers holding the switch are not dampening the sounds equally either. But if I had to choose between the two, my best guess is holding it will be more consistent. Again, I could be totally wrong too. About the acrylic tester, I guess we'll see. First, I will test to see if placement within that tester causes variance. If it doesn't, that might be better. I think we're saying the same thing in different ways. I don't know that the bass frequencies are coming from the switch itself though. I think those lower tones are caused by the force of the downstroke from the key press interacting with the larger components like the PCB > case > desk. In the case of the acrylic tester, I'm guessing it will go force from the downstroke > keycap > switch > acrylic tester > desk. I think that isolating the tester from the desk will lead to the same bass decrease meaning the interaction is between the acrylic tester and the desk and not from the switch interacting with the tester.
