Why Ramon Salazar was EVIL in Resident Evil 4

- Ramon Salazar is absolutely Evil. The actions he's taken prior to and during Resident Evil 4's storyline gives us many evidence to the vile things he's done. Where he released the Las Plagas parasite and joined the Los Illuminados. Which these factors were the complete opposite of what he was supposed to do as the 8th Castellan of the Castle near the Village in RE4. Where the Salazar Family was famous for the actions of the 1st Castellan and his fight against this parasite worshiping cult.
So In Resident Evil 4, we learn what Salazar has done, how he acts as the obstacle against main protagonist Leon Kennedy, how he showed his full devotion to the leader of Los Illuminados Osmund Saddler, and how he tries to capture Ashley Graham.
We also learn about his taking in of a dominant form of the Las Plagas parasite, allowing him to order those of lower hierarchy, which in doing so he's able to command the many Ganado, Zealots, Cultist, Novistador, Garrador, and his loyal Verdugo.
We also cover the differences between the two versions of Ramon Salazar. Comparing his appearance in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 4 Remake. Where we discuss a darker and more serious approach to his character, which was seen in the resident evil showcase.

Ramon is kind of a tragic villain, being left with 2 dead parents at a young age, an easy to twist mind, an inferiority complex and a fortune, thats a mixture for chaos.

They say Salazar is 20 but given his mannerisms, attire, & The Dominate Parasite in his body he could be centuries old in RE4 Remake.

I think that Salazar is still twenty years old. My theory is that in the original game, Leon called Salazar an old man before being corrected about his age, I always thought he was much younger due to his more youthful appearance. I think they changed how he looked in the remake to make this comment by Leon to make more sense as you wouldn't think that he was twenty years old. That is my opinion anyway. Enjoy your videos.

Maybe that happens because possibly one of the symptoms of Las Plagas is premature aging, since many of the Ganados in the remake look pretty old or have old people characteristics (like gray hair and cracks in the skin). So maybe Salazar is still 20 years old, but the Las Plagas makes him look older than he actually is.

I liked the original "boy-ish" design of Salazar. He looks like an adult / elderly guy but also a kid's body, super creepy.
In the new design the boy-ish aspects are gone and he looks just like a somewhat eccentric elderly guy.

Salazar looks awesome in the new game. He looks like a proper Colonial Spanish nobleman, whereas before he looked and acted very much like a little boy. Not that that was bad, but now Salazar looks like he has the advantage of experience, maturity, and cunning, and the danger of being very intelligent and very serious. An aristocratic nobleman going through life as a midget and trying to maintain his nobility must have been incredibly adversarial. It would explain his behaviours and attitudes. It feels like Leon is truly up against a Colonial Spaniard as opposed to an unstable young boy.

Visually I love this new design for Salazar, he looks so creepy yet still small.
My only hope is that they keep him at least kinda goofy and campy like in the original.
He was such an entertaining character who rarely took things too seriously since he felt
everything was beneath him, some of the best moments in the game came from him.
I can see him still have moments like he did in the original but I can see that they want to give a more serious approach to his character

I personally believe he was changed as a child. Salazar came to him as that cult leader, whispering in his ear and earning his trust. Being vulnerable and with no family, Salazar fell under Saddler's manipulations and unsealed the Plaga. He was infected with a powerful strain as a reward by Saddler and no longer grew from that point onward, but still aged as evident by his skin and hair which seem to age unnaturally fast.
Hair is a wig like how judges wear.
It’s impossible for him to be infected as a child, Las Plagas killed all the children in the village before the events of the game
I could see that with no moral compass no guidelines to steer him from being manipulated. Saddler was more than likely the one that told him his sins would be atoned for if he released the Las Palagas thus becoming his mentor. now seeing all of that unfold may even be scarier than the game. Seeing a young boy being mislead by some maniac is already in all realms spooky.
If you read the lore in the Castle, you find out that the Salazar family has an evil streak. They would go from benevolent to evil, from generation to generation. Ramones father was evil and an adept Torturer, and He passed this on to his Son., Ramone was supposed to be one of the worst, who developed mental torture techniques, as well as physical.
So He was already a lunatic way before the Parasite.
What I always wanted to know was, what was Salazar's plan AFTER he was assimilated by the Plagas? Like, was he happy to just exist like that, covered in tumours, just stuck to the wall of that room?
Lol, me too! I was also thinking the same thing for the guy who morphed into a whale-sized monster in RE5. Maybe the mutation is something that they can "turn off" like a light switch? Who knows?

I actually really like how in the remake his insults sound like he’s attacking Leon with his own insecurities.
I think he is another line he referred to him as pulgarcito. Which is a Spanish folk tale of a dwarf. If you remember Ramon acid attacked a housemaid because she called him pulgarcito. Very in depth character.
I think he is still 20 years old in this version.
The short stature, and rapid aging ate symptoms of progeria. This is why Leon mistakes him as an old man, though in the original he looked quite young, perhaps system limitations or odd artstyle direction.
Here looks much older, which is beneficial to telling the story that he is getting older much faster than normal, not just because Plaga reasons, just maybe the scars.
Another symptom of Progeria? Shortened life span, most people who has the syndrome die before reaching...20 years old. This could also explain why Ramon is willing to take the parasite, to live a little longer.
Oh the gray hair? A wig to cover his bald head, alopecia being another symptom of progeria.

I like this new reinterpretation. Ramon's ancestors, as immortalised in the paintings around the castle, were all imposing men clad in knightly armor, while Ramon himself was a midget suffering from accelerated aging, the inferiority complex of his childhood turned in his teenage years into anger towards said ancestors and their legacy, making him an easy prey for Saddler's manipulation. Saddler offered Ramon a way to get vengeance over his ancestors a d their legacy, as well as a way to cure his illness.
Despite Progeria, there's also a big chance that incest was a huge part of his condition. Royalty, especially in such a remote region, always tries to keep the bloodline pure and I can't imagine there were a lot of other kingdoms they dawdled around with.
it was the art style and direction of old RE. Code Veronica had a similar character, only it was twins, but one of them was in cryo, so the son decided to be the girl as well (essentially you had this pompous, rich/aristocratic, blonde child that would dress up as his sister) people loved this, and I think Salazar was a continuation of this troupe. It's a shame it never really happened again after 4, because RE took such a drastic change after this (well 4 was a drastic change in of itself, but it still maintained some of the campy design from the first handfull of games)

Ramon is still likely young. But they seem to be bringing in a more realistic take to him.
He is likely living with Progeria syndrome, a condition that causes Dwarfism -and- permature aging.
I always figured that was the case with him, but the remake version really showcases the effects on him.
Its also likely why he was so easily manipulated - Suffering from a condition daunting would likely make him resent his bloodline, and want to seek relief from it.
Most Spanish royals were super short

One interesting thing that always stood out to me was Ramon making an oblique reference to geo-political situation around the time of RE4's release. After Leon calls Ramon's actions "terrorism", Ramon replies "Isn't that a popular word these days."
Ramon Salazar as a naive child thought his intentions were good but in reality he knew he couldn't live up to The Salazar name. Same as the Ashford's from Code Veronica.
The family's name was ASHFORD, it only SEEMED like it could be ASGCROFT. But you are right about the fact that Ramon Salazar had similar issues with living up to his family name, this would possibly cause him to be easily manipulated by Osmund Saddler.
Or in real-life, Leopold 2 of Belgium.
While his father was a good king, the latter committed crimes against humanity in Congo.

In my headcanon his Butler who wrote about him taking the plaga is one of the Verdugos, probably the one swallowed in the giant queen plaga with him. Maybe even still conscious to some degree and aware that everything is messed up but serving to the end lol. It's funny how those things look EXACTLY like a mix between Adam Smasher from Cyberpunk and a Xenomorph ! Love that design.
It's not really a headcanon. The butler, likely called Mayordomo (same word, but in spanish) rather than Verdugo (executioner in spanish), is canonically the one that is absorbed by the Plaga.
A bit disappointing they removed his hat but he looks good here. I still hope his castle has treasures to loot. Like the chess board and the gold backed mirror.

@@tree_alone Well after I wrote this comment I did some research and according to what i read online, capcom is not removing any scenes, and that article was from Jan 2023, so that give lots of hope, it will be sad if they did, every scene has its charm and fright factor, hope they kept the chanting in the castile, that really kept me looking behind when I played at night.

He was taken advantage of by Sadler, just like the rest of the villagers. This confirms when you read a diary of his right hand Verdugo. He knows that shit going south, but sees himself as unable to do anything at this point, so he stays by his lord and go down whith him, as he sees as the only right thing left to do.

In the remake the fight was insane when he starts screaming “Die you demon child you should of never been born!” I feel like he was talking about himself. I kind of felt bad for the little monster. The Saddler fight was also next level words can’t describe how epic it felt when he’s clanging around in his behemoth mutant superior form going anti christ and bellowing about cult prophecy and his divine wrath.

I believe an older version of Salazar can still be a spoiled successor educated with embellished stories about his family's past. This still opens Salazar to Saddler's manipulation because Salazar can take everything for granted. As for the hairstyle similar to the wigs the powerful wore in the late 17 century, that's a nod to the original design. Since it's clear that this remake takes a darker tone and a serious approach, we may see a miniboss with a twisted personality and an ambitious goal. Thank you for dissecting all the details.
My personal theory is that Salazar will have done the exact same. With him being older, the events of the betrayal of his family probably occured some years ago by RE 4 Remake time. That could leave some room for both some character dev of him getting more twisted with the years or grow a layer of regret under his skin, over what he has done that we might get to see in documents through the game, or in his last breath. Or, maybe this time around the version of the plagas he gets infected with affects his mind and slowly forces him into collaboration with Saddler.
As a kid in the mid 2000s, Leon throw stabbing his hand was one of the most brutal things I saw in a video game. I cringed in pain at that scene. Of course, nowadays there are worst things you see in modern horror games.
This is such a good documentary. I freaking loved the video ty so much for making this it made me appreciate the game's story even more than before
I really like the redesign, it’s creepy and the dark aesthetic being used in the remake fits so well together. It’s crazy to think how good this redesign is gonna be, I can’t wait to play it next year!!!

Salazar had a good soul. He was used by saddler. If anyone has gone through the game their is a memo in either chapter 4 or chapter i dont know for sure but memo was there and its name was " Butler's Memo". In that memo a butler who served the salazar family for generations gives his thought. He said that Sir Salazar would never do such s thing he was being used by the lord himself. Lord concived his mind filled with hatred and agony to the level that it wont be stopped. He than mentiones that He knew about this and how things were going and he said that he is partially to blame regarding this atrocious act.

This is why I think Umbrella’s agenda older than we realize. The Salazar Clan had already crusaded against Los Illuminados around the 1600’s, and actually won.
Meanwhile in Romania, the 4 Lords, Umbrella’s inspiration already had domain over their village for centuries, with the Dimitrescu wine being a centuries old legacy.
All while you have second generation noblemen like Spencer and Ashford who already had control in Europe before expanding Umbrella Corp into America by the 20th century.
It’s easy to see why their world is so inherently evil, why governments and global organizations like the BSAA have become corrupt.
Because clearly, genetic evolution and biological manufacturing has been behind human evolution and industrialization. Instead of going to war with kingdoms or WMDs, BOWs became the driving force behind most world powers.
Extremists like Saddler, Wesker, and Miranda weren’t trying to bring about doomsday, they were trying to reign in new kingdoms that could be controlled under one bloodline.
Sounds like a bio-horror version of metal gear....

16:04 the reason Salazar looks older may be because of the plagas. The plagas is shown to be able to change the physical appearance of those infected with it.

His story is actually kinda sad, his parents died when he was young and most of the villagers and subjects hated him. Saddler took advantage of his vulnerable situation to propel his plan. He probably had no other choice since he could get overthrown.
His desperate remarks during the final fight caused me an attack of compassion. I saw in him an offended child. I felt sorry for him. Why is he so mad? Maybe it was the environment that made him like this? Maybe one of the family members cruelly bullied him? Or maybe it was the disease that destroyed his psyche at an early age? And later the sectarians developed his dark side and he finally went crazy. We don't know everything. He was too young, sick and suggestible. A very interesting antagonist, I like to reflect on his story.

They'll probably keep that line since it's a rememberable line in the game but since they met his new design older I'll not be surprised if they made them in his early thirties🤣🤣
It's crazy how they made him look better and worse at the same time. In the original I found more annoying than scary, but this new design has him looking downright terrifying. We'll just have to see how the remake plays out. I look forward to it. Great vid Sir.

I am going to go with thinking they are going for an older Salazar this go round. Not only his appearance, but his voice makes me think that he is a much older being this time. Totally endorse this.
1) I don’t like new Salazar because he looks like someone shrunk Beethoven in the wash but it is what it is. 2) I’ve always wondered why Salazar didn’t become the “master” of the las plagas parasites as he unsealed the area they were in (or even one of the workers). Like why did Saddler become the most powerful? Because he was already a cult leader? Did they find one that was more powerful than the rest and have him bond with it instead of Mendez, the leader of the village who was clearly more imposing physically (maybe not mentally)? I wish I could see a cutscene of what happened prior to 4 explaining how the characters came to be in more detail. Even Salazar’s bodyguards would be great to find out more about. (Love the channel/video; I just have so many questions with these games and I love them so much but I wish I knew more 😅)
Idk but it’s pretty obvious that Saddler was the brains behind the whole operation. Salazar was just one of his more powerful minions. In the remake they explain that Saddler, Salazar, Krauser, and Mendez were implanted with a superior strain of plagas so they retained their intelligence but Im still going to assume that they are still mentally linked into and influenced by the plagas “hive mind.”

the Verdugo look more massive from behind in the view from the balcony. Salazar's right hand was always a handful, grins, for me. can't wait to play this.
Growing up at a young age he always stood out to me in such a discreet way, ignoring his goofiness and seeing him as important in that game as an element to the story, I now understand why he gave me such an odd feeling, seeing him just resonates with my child self, I think he is going to be more of an important and difficult boss fight, this time.
Carrying the salazar legacy, his short stature and I'm guessing he has progeria(accelerated aging) implying he doesn't have long to live would put alot stress for Ramon to leave a legacy before expiring. All of this would factor in Saddler easily swaying Ramon to join his side.
Good through vid and great articulate narration. Glad to see the passion still burning brite for this game, it's characters, and the writing of them. A great game as with any high standing piece of fiction leaves its mark for generations. RE4 in my opinion is the best single player game in the entire GameCube library, hands down. The multiplayer games like Smash Brothers Melee and Mario Cart/Party give it an apples to oranges comparison enjoyment run for it's money.

strange thing i was always wondering how someone like salazar could have verdugos as his bodyguard, discovered that salazar had implanted a special type plaga which gave him the ability to control other plagas, despite him merging with the queen plaga he still remained not combat type whereas his personality remained the same as he used to be.

He gives off the vibe of a creepy beethoven but that might because of his design also the castle redesign really gives credence to him making him more dangerous and disturbing. Also since the castle seems to be in darkness with only candles for light, I can tell we are going to have a lot of frustrated players who are going to be pitching a fit because they died thanks to an enemy hiding in the darkness.
