After eating an apple around March of last year, I noticed some of the pips in the core had already started to sprout inside the core. I planted them, and now have seven seedling apple trees. The original apples were Pink Lady grown in Chile.

I let mine all die sadly, but I'm getting a redo! FYI appleseeds don't give the same apples that they came from sadly, so either a tasty unknown species, or a less tasty one will be the literal fruits of your labour. Also, this means that all the trees that produce the same kind of apple originate from one and the same tree. You heard it right, humanity does copy paste with nature :)

A little over a year ago I found your video on starting maple seeds. It worked so well and was so much simpler than any other method. But it did fire me up for starting more seeds. Last year I tried fir trees, catalpa trees, Amur maples, and a variety of large fruited crabapples . I got seedlings from all of those. I also tried another variety of crabapples, Robinson, and it is a very tiny fruited variety and those all failed miserably. I'll be watching this series with great interest. I will get some seeds into some potting mix later today. thanks so much for sharing.

Note that if you have seeds from a particular cultivar with specific characteristics then the resulting trees won't be the same cultivar and will likely have different characteristics. This is why most fruit trees are propagated by grafting or from cuttings. In bonsai we normally want very small fruit and so those varieties are not propagated from seed.

I see crab apple jelly, preserves, liquor, flavored whisky, candied crabapples, don’t know what they are called but like cherries In a jar, etc. Have seen used to flavor white wine, a friend used the juice like you do before making jelly used to flavor champagne. My grandfather also made pickles out of them sweet and tart. I loved his watermelon pickles - he pickled everything from cukes to carrots, peppers, Beans (3 bean salad), onions, watermelon, all kinds of things. Some sweet, some sour. Basically crab apples are just like apples just much more tart and smaller. Have had them mixed in with regular apples, pears, etc and used in the same recipes from pies to butters. Some are very high in pectin and don’t require any extra, others need extra but usually they are high in pectin, vitamin c. You want to make sure they are ripe and at their peak - best way to tell is taste. Also I was taught to cut in half and if the seeds were dark brown they were ripe. My papa said if the critters were after than, they were most likely ready (bear, deer, raccoon, squirrels, possum, groundhogs, and birds. They are very popular. The small ones seem to stay on the tree longer, think they are more bitter and the birds get them later in the winter. Some need a pollinator I believe and you can get ones that mature from 8’ to 40’. Check the facts.
Never thought to use for bonsai, can’t wait. They come in all shades of pink from almost white to dark pink, to white, and with white and pink blotch. Ours the hummingbirds loved them as they some of the earliest blooming in spring either coming into the area or moving north. Same for honey bees - early source of nectar and pollen. Some are very fragrant, other not so much. Loved to stand on the porch in early evening early spring just as the breezes were becoming soft and warm (not trying to be poetic it’s just the feeling I got) and just breathe in the fragrance. Anyone who has spent a lot of time outside will know the feeling.
Some of the large fruited ones are Dolgo, Callowey (Calloway not sure if the same or just a different spelling) two I know of then there is Whitney, Chestnut, Harvest Gold, etc. if you want large fruited - typically those that say flowering or ornamental are smaller fruit. Those that say fruiting are ones meant for use in making products like jellies, jams, etc. but I have seen this not hold up, depends on who is selling and what they know. Some are just non grower type resellers and wouldn’t know a pear from grape.

I assumed you would use air layering to produce young trees in a much more rapid fashion and have trees true to parent tree. For a home gardener so many potential new trees and so limited space and time. Love your videos.
