Thank you a lot! Today I checked my seeds and lot of them are germinating! I've transfered them as you did and hope for the best! My seeds are from a very very old autoctonic apples tree from Serbia that we have found in our property. All the best for you! 🙂
Nice video! A little tip: when stratifying, sprinkle a little ceylon cinnamon on the seeds. I germinated mine in about 2 weeks with the cinnamon method!
This will be neat to follow. I am curious if these will grow true to type or if they cross pollinated. I had 3 apple trees(multiple variety) in my yard at one house, the house was from the 1940s and the trees were from about then. The neighbour on one side had a crab apple tree that she said had been planted in the late 40s and the neighbour on the other side had 2 trees of a baking apple variety that her grandmother planted late 49s or early 50s. I think one of my trees was the result of a seed from my favorite tree that was cross pollinated (hard not to cross with such close proximity). My favorite tree was a crisp and very sweet variety (no clue on "name") that was yellow stripes blushing to red. My husband's favorite tree was a VERY sour green apple (we figured out that it was likely planted as a pectin source for canning). But our third tree was strange, we called it a mystery tree. The apples looked identical to the sweet tree but could have the taste and texture of any of the 4 varieties that surrounded it .... It was a mystery of what you got until you bit it 😉. Also it was my kids' favorite of our trees. We figure the tree was a result of seed that definitely had the sweet tree as one of the parents but cross pollinated with one of the others. It made great jelly, applesauce and pies so despite the guess of its parentage we enjoyed it.
I honestly can't remember, but that would be a good idea! Fortunately they weren't in those cups for too long before being transferred to large containers.
So 4 months of stratification? I'm about 6-7 weeks in and i think I've seen the start of at least 1 root. I will be watching the rest of this series, thank you
@redfernforest, I had some old red delicious (I don't kno if thats the actual name or brand of the apple) apples from Walmart sitting in my fridge for a little over a month, before I threw them out I took out some seeds, put them in a folded bounty paper towel inside a container without a lid, then hid them inside my oven so they could be in the dark and in room temperature, every other night I 'd spray the paper towel with water to keep them moist. It only took a week later for them to start sprouting.. Why did it take you 120 days to get sprouts in the fridge?
I’ve put my apple seeds directly in the ground in the fall and stratify them naturally and won’t need transplanting because apple trees don’t like being transplanted
So I have baby trees now that I need to transplant into bigger pots but obviously it's september, will they survive inside over the winter? I'm thinking I need to wait until next spring to plant them outside right?
@@RedfernFoodForest That's Great !! please make a video update I wanna see how they look or like do you have an Instagram account where you post pictures of your plants ?

@@RedfernFoodForest Nice, then I know what to kinda expect, I will also be trying to make some bonsai's as I dont have much garden space, might be fun to try on the channel too. Thanks for the reply
There's a video about gene hacking seeds (or something like that), which shows how starting seeds in poor soil with little water turns on their gene for bad conditions. So, when they're planted in a spot that is unexpectedly better, they POWER ON. Basically, they start life with low expectations, so when they'e given more they're super happy.
My room was very cold dor a while so I cut an apple and put the seeds in a wet paper towl and put it in a dark drawer and it took less than a week for a couple to sprout
You can sprout those seeds, but the seeds wont be the same as the parent. Apples are grown from scions as far as I know. Those apples are usually good for ciderk like Johnny Appleseed did...
Very interested I set four seed all catch my tree is3ft high don't know what to do now, I need help it's growing in a20ins pot. I don't know what to do.help. pls
@@RedfernFoodForest trying 2 things first doing the refrigerator paper towel method and also just soaking in a warm dark location. the seeds are from apples that were refrigerated for a while before making pies
Only reason that worked is you probably used store bought apples. Store apples have been stored in cold storage for sometimes up to a year so they have already went through the stratification process.
Try grafting your desired apple species onto root stock or another apple tree Apple seeds arent true to type Most likely wont get what you want from the seeds

Just did as you said and all five of mine have germinated. Thank you so much for your help.
Woo hoo! I'm glad you were successful!
I did what you said and they are germinating… awesome, thanks.
Great!
Had a granny smith this morning. Was in fridge for two weeks. Had seed sprouting so started in a hydroponics jar. Will be an exciting thing to watch

That is a great story, thank you for sharing. I hope to have similar experiences with these trees as they grow!
@@RedfernFoodForest You can also do grafting with scions from the tree varieties that you want and graft them to rootstock. ;-)
this is really good , I'm really excited about the results and just wanted to ask if you poked some holes in the cups for water drainage

Sprinkle ground cinnamon over the seeds and you won't have mold or fungus! 🙂
Interesting...

AWESOME! Yes INDEED, it DOES work! ;-)
Will they still grow with the mold?
Any update on how those trees are doing? Oh & I hope the hair & beard grew back too. ;)
Hah not yet!
Can you put these in the ground while cold
Yes - in fact, that may be the ideal time! (if they were bare root)
@@RedfernFoodForest oh yeah thanks so mines should be coming up soon because the leaves fell off for winter so something must be working right.

Makes sense!
Are you supposed to cover seed in more soil after pressing seed in or leave it uncovered? My seeds in the fridge just germinated
Plus that fan idea is badasss thank you!!
Just cover them a little.
Love it
Thanks!
So I have baby trees now that I need to transplant into bigger pots but obviously it's september, will they survive inside over the winter? I'm thinking I need to wait until next spring to plant them outside right?
I'm not sure. They should go dormant if outside. You could leave some inside and some outside to test the difference as an experiment.
So, is the white part from the seed the root? Should it be facing downwards when planting it or upwards??
Honestly can't remember...plant it sideways?! Hah!
The sprout is the root, the seed itself will come up out of the soil
When you place the seed in the soil, is the sprout up or down? Do you cover loosely with soil? or just leave sitting in the depression?
Sprout up, roots downish, loosely covered with soil.
Seeds are like people, always leave sitting in depression 🤔🤨
What time of the year is it best to plant the baby apple tree's outside? I live in Sweden, where we have cold and snowy winters.
Baby trees? Probably the spring. Otherwise bare root trees can be planted in the winter.
update video?
Do you moist them after the planting during these 3 weeks?
Yes!

you have a real winter happening outside. why didn't you plant it in a vase and left it outside?
I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Can you rephrase?
He can control and reduce the required cold period by using the fridge, over putting it outside over winter.

I think I killed them all.
I water mine once a week or longer
Good to know!
Is there an update on how these trees have grown?!
Coming soon!
Same thing I was here for. Have ~8 seeds from some Walmart Galas to start stratify that have been drying in a cupboard for a month.
What you fail to mention is that you won't get clones of those 2 apple varieties. You nay get something similar or something way out in left field.
If I didn't mention it in this video I have discussed it in others. These will be completely new varieties!

You need to remove the outer ring of the seed and keep in a small cockpits cup.. it will germinate in 5 days time
