I guess Peter is right in saying some people may find sowing seeds for Bonsai too time consuming but I like growing from seed as I can see the growing process over the first 3 years or so, I maybe be getting on for 70 years of age and may not live long enough to see them grow to maturity as Bonsai but I can pass them on to friends or family. I can say I have had a lot of success of sowing seeds like crab apples, Japanese {Deshojo} Maples from Herons. I get a lot of pleasure when I see the seeds germinate that I have sowed.
Hope you have many many many more years of bonsai happiness and love your mindset on growing from seed. Love growing from seed to and seeing what I end up with
It's not about the end result, it's about the enjoyment of the journey, I too grow from seed, even if I know that a particular species is not good for bonsai, just to enjoy growing them!
I want to watch a tree grow
I would love to see follow-up videos as the seeds germinate and Peter pricks them out to pot up.
Very interesting and informative post, it is 35 here and my sister in Buffalo has 7 feet of snow ... so Peter we are living vicariously through you this week. Thank you , be safe , be well.
I have had great success this year growing from seed. I have grown English oak as well as pin oaks, pride of Bolivia, Ash and Mulberry(mulberry so easy to grow they like weeds)
Ooooooooh thanks for the tutorial
Great video as always Peter. 👍
For beginners I would however caution that although growing bonsai from seed is a great and worthwhile activity - it is not a great way of being introduced to bonsai because of the long time frames involved. There is a Greek proverb that says “a society grows great when old men plant seeds for trees under whose shade they know they will never sit.” It could be 5-10 years before your tree is sufficiently mature to begin wiring and styling for bonsai, dependent on species.
I would recommend you do this alongside having more mature trees to work on while your seeds grow. Get yourself a 5 year head start and buy a nursery plant to style, or an inexpensive Chinese elm if you are a beginner, and learn to look after this and acquire other trees while you wait for your seeds to germinate and grow. 👍
Good advice - but then bonsai is a patient game.
I have sowed lots of crab apple seed both red and yellow and some acorns. Hopefully some if not most will germinate. I had great success last year with crab apples. I look forward to your follow up video to see what your success rate is. A great video.
This is inspiring! ❤️
Wonderful video Peter! I personally enjoy the propagation aspect of bonsai as much as I enjoy the art process! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
Hahaha! Mr Chan, you got so excited about the smell of the Quince that it looked as though you were about to turn to the camera and let us try and get a smell of it! And to be honest I naturally leand in to catch a wiff of it! Haha, good times my friend.
I love how you enjoy what you do and where you are so much , brings warmth to my heart
Great info as always…thank you
Thx for sharing Peter... 👍
🌳Another interesting video Peter! Ps-i enjoyed watching you on bargain hunt! 😀 👍
Thank you.
Thank you... 🙏 😔 🙏
Very informative video. It is interesting which plants will grow from their seeds. You never know until you plant one.
🌮🙏🖖🙏😔🙏🙏🙏🎄

Those purple berries are a Beautyberry plant! I made jelly from them before 😄
I had the opportunity to get China Berry seeds, could not decide from the online research if they were worth growing, or not.

Every wisteria I have grown from the pods grew vigorously... none ever bloomed after 10 yrs...😭😭☹️... but they grew... sigh ( Maryland near DC )
how do i do the same with yew seeds
💕👌👍
Can I start to seed now? It’s quite cold here in northern Ohio. Do I put them outside and cover with a plastic and wait until spring
Yes
Thank you for responding Mr Chan. Do you sell/ship your seeds? Or can you recommend a good company here in the US that is good for seeds. I am a beginner joined the Cleveland Chapter. Maybe they will have resources.
I can’t tell you how much it means to me.. and my journey that you share you knowledge in such a relatable and straightforward manner.🙏🏻
do you have to stratify the seeds? every time I've tried doing that (using my light and cool utility room for 2 weeks and 6 weeks in my fridge), the seeds never came up. the ones I tried just putting in my window came up fine. I've only tried from dried seeds, leaving them 3 days in water before sowing, not sure if that could have something to do with it.
hi, Peter! how are the seedlings going?
Can someone tell me what the bright red berries were at the beginning of the video ? Id like to get those
👍👌🙂
Do needle juniper berries grow well from sowing seeds?
Very easy to germinate.
What zone are you in, or where is herons located??
@Bonsai by SnC thanks
Wich is the composit he recommands? I hear journinist number 2-3. But I find no result for it on internet
The soil is called John Innes, and comes in different varieties depending on your needs.
I need to change my pine soil. My plants die every time I change the soil. Please tell me why.
Are you changing the soil because you want to repot your tree all the time? If so - then dont do that.
when do you harvest maple seeds?
In autumn
When the leaves are about to fall - ie in the Fall or Autumn as we say in English
Are these edible
Some might be but I'll point out that sabina juniper, which is included here, is a toxic variety of juniper. Be very careful with juniper berries if you don't know for certain the juniper species.
Please name all fruits?
