I guess Peter is right in saying some people may find sowing seeds for Bonsai too time consuming but I like growing from seed as I can see the growing process over the first 3 years or so, I maybe be getting on for 70 years of age and may not live long enough to see them grow to maturity as Bonsai but I can pass them on to friends or family. I can say I have had a lot of success of sowing seeds like crab apples, Japanese {Deshojo} Maples from Herons. I get a lot of pleasure when I see the seeds germinate that I have sowed.

It's not about the end result, it's about the enjoyment of the journey, I too grow from seed, even if I know that a particular species is not good for bonsai, just to enjoy growing them!

Great video as always Peter. 👍
For beginners I would however caution that although growing bonsai from seed is a great and worthwhile activity - it is not a great way of being introduced to bonsai because of the long time frames involved. There is a Greek proverb that says “a society grows great when old men plant seeds for trees under whose shade they know they will never sit.” It could be 5-10 years before your tree is sufficiently mature to begin wiring and styling for bonsai, dependent on species.
I would recommend you do this alongside having more mature trees to work on while your seeds grow. Get yourself a 5 year head start and buy a nursery plant to style, or an inexpensive Chinese elm if you are a beginner, and learn to look after this and acquire other trees while you wait for your seeds to germinate and grow. 👍

I have sowed lots of crab apple seed both red and yellow and some acorns. Hopefully some if not most will germinate. I had great success last year with crab apples. I look forward to your follow up video to see what your success rate is. A great video.

Thank you for responding Mr Chan. Do you sell/ship your seeds? Or can you recommend a good company here in the US that is good for seeds. I am a beginner joined the Cleveland Chapter. Maybe they will have resources.

do you have to stratify the seeds? every time I've tried doing that (using my light and cool utility room for 2 weeks and 6 weeks in my fridge), the seeds never came up. the ones I tried just putting in my window came up fine. I've only tried from dried seeds, leaving them 3 days in water before sowing, not sure if that could have something to do with it.

Some might be but I'll point out that sabina juniper, which is included here, is a toxic variety of juniper. Be very careful with juniper berries if you don't know for certain the juniper species.
