Creating Bonsai - Making design choices - Crab Apple

- Hi everyone!
Today we're going back to look at my nursery stock Crab Apple "Tina", which got it's first Bonsai styling 4 months ago in March. It responded really well almost immediately, sprouting beautiful red buds all over.
Now it's July, and it's time to make some design decisions based on the growth that has developed from those buds.
This is the next step in creating Bonsai from nursery stock.
Enjoy!
Love
Rebecca xx

Hi Rebecca, I think you took the right decisions and it's starting to look like an orchard tree, scars included. How will you fertilize it?
Thank you so much 🥰 I'm using Biogold pelleted fertiliser...oh, I promised to put a link in the description didn't I 🙃
@@PumpkinBecki yes you did but I didn't noticed it😅🤦♂️biogold is a great fertilizer and it has no smell too, that's not a bad thing😁
@@RosarioCostanzo Also it seems to be really accessible to the trees. I tried a different, cheaper brand which stayed in hard cylinders on the surface and didn't benefit the trees at all. I moved over to Biogold and saw the difference straight away, the pieces soften with the first watering, and all the trees started growing better and budding new shoots. I'm converted :)
@@PumpkinBecki I tried cheaper ones too and I had a lot of problems, one in particular attracted a lot of fly larvaes in my pots and it wasn't the best thing to see😅 I had surprising results with a fertilizer made with wool fiber! 100% organic, no smell, it softens easily, trees love it and it helps with water retention. I found it on Amazon
Nice work on the tree Becki, bold cuts for a good future!
Thank you so much Nigel
Hi. Nice work on cutting off those thick
Lateral branches. Looking like you will have on more thick branch to cut when the tree is pushing out more growth. Happy bonsai. Great job.
Thank you so much Calvin xx I'm keeping a close eye out for buds forming 😁
Love your videos Becki, when it comes to cutting they say in Japan ' less is more ' so never be afraid to cut a branch your not sure of, nature will show you which way to go each year.
I'm certainly braver than I used to be John :) and knowing that many trees will throw out adventitious buds quite readily makes that decision far less risky. Sometimes it can feel like taking your tree back in development terms, but ultimately it gives you the opportunity to make something better :) xx
Good Sunday Rebecca, you got a lovely tree. The front has eye shape with legs which gives it an imaginative perspective. It is always great watching your videos. 😍🌺🙏
Thank you so much Justin!
Good pruning choices! Crab apple are so vigorous, it'll be shooting out in all directions again before the end of summer!
I'm glad the temperatures have dropped and we've had some rain, I think the intense conditions might have knocked back it's recovery but it seems okay at the moment 🙃xx
I so want to clean and sharpen those cutters. :]
I've asked Father Christmas for some new ones 😆
Have you redefined "mil" in the UK? A mil has traditionally been 1/1000 inch, about the diameter of a human hair. Excellent series on converting a retailed crab apple into a bonsai.
Hi there :) Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. I'm excited to see what this little crab apple will do this year, there's so much potential.
I found this on Wikipedia "A common shortening of millimetre in spoken English is "mil". This can cause confusion since in the United States, "mil" traditionally means a thousandth of an inch." I come from an interior design background and it's a habit I've had for 25+ years. Sorry if I caused confusion :) xx
Thanks Rebecca. Really enjoy you providing your thought process. The little crabapple is coming along quite nicely. 👍 P.S. I’m a fairly recent subscriber. Found you via Blue Sky Bonsai.
Hi Jay 👋 That's lovely thank you, the first prune on this tree was pretty nerve-wracking, but I was so delighted with how it bounced back. I adore Dave at Blue Sky Bonsai, I'm delighted you found me via him xx
if you run low on cut paste...,have a look at plasticine and its many uses. I have used it successfully for years though it does need thinning down a little.
Interesting idea, I do have plenty of cut paste and callus mate on hand, but you never know 😊
Just discovered your channel very nice
How kind 😊 Thank you very much indeed, and welcome 😊xx
You are welcome
Cool tree! Did you do anything special to get this much growth? What kind of fertilizer are you giving?
Hi Jack, welcome and thank you for taking the time to comment 😊 I use Biogold bonsai pellets right through the growing season. I switched from a cheaper brand which stayed in hard lumps all year and were no benefit to my trees, and have been really impressed with the results. I understand that they work best in the Japanese climate, and that it is possible to make the nutrients more available by turning them into a liquid feed. You just put the pellets into a bottle of rainwater and leave them to dissolve for a week, but I haven't tried yet 😊
Hi Rebecca thank you for your responses to my questions I have a new question I just recently within the last couple of days was given a crabapple tree that is about 6 ft tall when is the best time to do a trunk chop on a crabapple and ahead of time thanks for all your help
You are very welcome William, though I must add that I'm not a Bonsai professional, just a very enthusiastic amateur :) Late winter/ early spring is the ideal time...so now really 😀. Have a look just below the soil surface at the roots, find the root flare and the approximate front of the tree before you do your trunk chop. You will want the cut to be at the back of the tree, so it's not obvious to the viewer. Good luck, and thank you again, I really do appreciate it xx
BTW, how long do you let the wires be there? When u may need to rewire?
I try to check on them every few weeks, especially during the spring/summer when they are pushing lots of sap up the tree and expanding rapidly...There are a couple of trees that I forgot to check, and they are pretty scarred, but being so early in their development I don't think it will matter, as those pieces will probably be removed in years to come :)
i wanna buy that trees , how i can pay that and shipping in to indonesia? please i really really want it from long ago
Hi Rebecca. Great video's 👍 just started on my bonsai journey last year, exciting times ahead! I am definitely going to grow or purchase a crab apple tree to train. I have 2 apple trees my kiddies grew from seed a few years ago that I have been cutting back and decided to use as my next victims, only I have noticed they're both showing black spots on the leaves.. woukd you know what this could be please? Looking forward to working my way through your video's
Hi Robert, apologies for the delay in replying to you. The most likely cause of brown spots on apple leaves is Apple Scab, it usually make the leaves drop early as well. The only "fix" is spraying with fungicide, clearing up leaves as soon as they fall and cleaning your tools with isopropyl alcohol before and after working on each tree. You may find it best to start spraying fungicide as soon as the leaves open, before any spots appear. I'm very excited for you, and thank you so much for taking the time to comment xx
@@PumpkinBecki Hi Becki, no need for apologies. Thank you so much for replying and all the information, much appreciated 😊 I will getme some fungicide in time for the buds breaking. So close to spring, I can't wait! Hopefully my oak, birch and pomegranate cuttings take root 🤞🏼 again, thanks 😊
@@robertscarborough68 Delighted to help 😊
Hi Rebecca 🙃 I just wanted to thank you for your input on my future apple bonsia. It has leafed out totally green and full of life 😊 thank you very much, the fungal killer sorted out my problem 🙏 keep up the good work!
i wanna buy that trees , how i can pay that and shipping in to indonesia? please i really really want it from long ago, any other crabapple trees?
I'm sorry Jang I don't know the answer to this. You might be better trying to find one locally that is used to your growing conditions.
@@PumpkinBecki thank rebecca for the response, i might be can bring this to indonesia?
@@jangyosef_1095 maybe, you would need to check your import regulations.
😌 1 st✌️
Well done 👏
I beg you to use protective gloves or safety cutter while cutting by blade cutter. The whole time I was worried for those tender fingers. Take care Pls 😁🙏
Wish you had shown a better image of your finished work.
Oh, I'm sorry, I do my best but it's tricky sometimes xx In good news, there are follow-up videos of Crab Apple "Tina", and there will even more as time goes on. This is just the first step in her journey 😊 xx
