Starting a new Bonsai from nursery stock - Ilex crenata

- Hi everyone,
This week we are doing the first styling on my last piece of nursery stock (for this year). I've got an Ilex crenata aka Japanese Holly which I bought for £17.99 back in September 2020.
Join me as I investigate the root system, find the front and prune branches...it's going to get ruthless!
Enjoy
Love
Rebecca xx

As we say here in Texas, Go big or go home! It will be lovely in a few years time 🥰
:D Heck yes! Or rather, "Go very very small or go home" :D xx
Nicely done and great edit.
Thank you so much, and thank you for taking the time to comment xx
You really know what you're doing, its so satisfying to watch how you take such a gentle, balanced and accurate approach to your creation. Good stuff, keep it up!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it, and you taking the time to comment as well xx
@@PumpkinBecki no problem, keep it up
I actually have the same species of specimen as a bonsai 9or 10 yr maybe older idk , I purchased it ,when it was about your Specimen size They love Turf like Soil pumice Acadama lava rock and what I learned that mine was getting infested with root aphids, from keeping them inside but by easily & early maintaining /Cleaning soil they was swiftly Eradicated. And the Nabari looks really nice on yours, for a good start.
Hi Garland, yes keeping trees indoors can make them very susceptible to pests and diseases. Glad you got it under control. I'm very excited to see what this tree does this year ☺️ xx
@@PumpkinBecki ditto/Likewise☺️
Looking good
Thank you so much Sue :) xx
Woohoo Rebecca you really went for it here 🤣 I’d love to see an update because I’m just sure you made all the right chops 😊
I do hope so Jeanette 🤣🤣🤣xx
@@PumpkinBecki I have great faith in you 😊 I don’t know that I will try another bonsai after my disaster with the Atlanta Spruce. It made me laugh trying though. I still have it but it’s hidden at the back of my border. I will leave it to you experts 👍
I do not know how I missed that video Jeanette, I've just gone through your library and watched it. Bonsai is bloomin' hard isn't it 😄 Good work xx
@@PumpkinBecki it’s not as simple as it looks that’s for sure 🤣
You're a very brave lady. Xx
Thank you Mandy :D It's doing really really well, and put on loads of growth over summer xx
Good work Rebecca! I probably would've done all the same chops. This one's going to look great in a few years.
Thank you Dave 😊 It's mentally tough looking at a tree, and knowing that you need to cut most of it off for the good of it's future. I've been braver this year than ever before with my Bonsai 😊xx
Nice Content! I have multiple of these holly trees in my house used as hedge. However, every single tree I have tried to dig out to bonsaify, its dead within a month. No matter what season (most early spring as researched) and no matter how big the rootball is kept intact. It's so bad that after 3-4 failed attempts, I decided to just ignore Ilex Crenata whatsoever for bonsai purposes :D . The damn thing seems to be extremely sensitive!
You're making me nervous about mine Alesssio! I can see adventitious buds forming on the trunk but they're very slow, so I've moved it into a bit more sun and hopefully they'll start to swell :)
Hi Rebecca, you did the right choices, in my opinion. I like the junction of the roots with trunk. It really reminds me of a big tree
Thank you so much 😊 I decided to be more radical than with the Crab Apple, hopefully it pays off 😊
@@PumpkinBecki i am sure you will have great results with it
Thank you 😊 xx
Hey, new video!
Hope you enjoyed it Justin! :)
"So here we go" and "lets do bonsai"
Oh yeah! 😆😎
4:23 there is a couple of white grubs in the soil here, are they root mealybugs?
Hi Barry, they are actually fungus gnat larvae. They are more problematic indoors in house plants, but a well fed healthy outdoor plant should be fine. They feed on the organic components of the compost. It's a great reason to get all that organic soil out of the root system and in to akadama, pumice and lava ASAP 😊xx
@@PumpkinBecki Awesome! i have a few indoor bonsais so will have to look out for those.. im in the UK too :)
Rebecca, can I ask what the cut paste was that you used at 18:30 please?
Certainly Mkke, it's this one www.amazon.co.uk/Bonsai-cut-paste-deciduous-trees/dp/B000KI59A8/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1486X0XDYCI3N&dchild=1&keywords=bonsai+cut+paste&qid=1627295556&sprefix=bonsai+cut%2Caps%2C147&sr=8-6&pldnSite=1
