  • Hi everyone,
    This week we are doing the first styling on my last piece of nursery stock (for this year). I've got an Ilex crenata aka Japanese Holly which I bought for £17.99 back in September 2020.
    Join me as I investigate the root system, find the front and prune branches...it's going to get ruthless!
    Enjoy
    Love
    Rebecca xx

    I actually have the same species of specimen as a bonsai 9or 10 yr maybe older idk , I purchased it ,when it was about your Specimen size They love Turf like Soil pumice Acadama lava rock and what I learned that mine was getting infested with root aphids, from keeping them inside but by easily & early maintaining /Cleaning soil they was swiftly Eradicated. And the Nabari looks really nice on yours,for a good start.

      Hi Garland, yes keeping trees indoors can make them very susceptible to pests and diseases. Glad you got it under control. I'm very excited to see what this tree does this year ☺️ xx

      Thank you Dave 😊 It's mentally tough looking at a tree, and knowing that you need to cut most of it off for the good of it's future. I've been braver this year than ever before with my Bonsai 😊xx

    Nice Content! I have multiple of these holly trees in my house used as hedge. However, every single tree I have tried to dig out to bonsaify, its dead within a month. No matter what season (most early spring as researched) and no matter how big the rootball is kept intact. It's so bad that after 3-4 failed attempts, I decided to just ignore Ilex Crenata whatsoever for bonsai purposes :D . The damn thing seems to be extremely sensitive!

      You're making me nervous about mine Alesssio! I can see adventitious buds forming on the trunk but they're very slow, so I've moved it into a bit more sun and hopefully they'll start to swell :)

    Hi Rebecca, you did the right choices, in my opinion. I like the junction of the roots with trunk. It really reminds me of a big tree

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  Год назад +1

      Hi Barry, they are actually fungus gnat larvae. They are more problematic indoors in house plants, but a well fed healthy outdoor plant should be fine. They feed on the organic components of the compost. It's a great reason to get all that organic soil out of the root system and in to akadama, pumice and lava ASAP 😊xx
