  • Hi everyone,
    This week I'm sharing a little Shohin sized Pyracantha tree which I have been developing from simple nursery stock since 2018. It has so many months of interest, with beautiful white flowers in summer and orange berries in autumn. It began as a tall, strangely shaped hedging plant, but I saw it had potential. Plants like this are readily available at garden centres and DIY stores, for very modest prices, making them brilliant material for beginners to learn with.
    Join me as I get this little tree ready for winter, look at some pot ideas and get a bit philosophical at the same time.
    Enjoy!
    Love
    Rebecca xx

    Rebecca, you could be my soul sister lol, finding your videos and advice/experience is joyful and encouraging. I currently have about 40 trees in training, all via nursery stock or things being removed by neighbours. I love your philosophy around your trees and feel the same way. Thank you for talking about pot choice, I will be potting a few of mine in their first bonsai pots this next Spring and I have been looking but finding it very difficult. As you say they aren't cheap, so expensive mistakes could be made very easily. I know they won't be their final pot, but it's such a big step after years of work getting them to the first pot stage isn't it. Thank you.

      Hi Claudia, huge apologies for the delay in replying to you xx Thank you for your lovely comments, I really do appreciate it. I think it's really helpful to see someone going through the decision making processes involved in Bonsai, and being flexible enough to change plans when the tree isn't doing what you thought it would :) and oh my goodness that is so true of the video I'm editing right now :D Hopefully that will be up this Sunday at 7pm GMT. I look forward to hearing from you again, and if you ever fancy sharing photos of your trees I'm on Instagram and Facebook xx

    Thats lovely. i agree with your new front view. I like the bluegreen pot but its def too small. Last year Dec20/ Jan 21 our local Homebase reduced their Pyracanthas to half price so i bought a couple. Then they reduced them again so i bought a couple more. Then... they reduced them again £3. last price, so... i bought some more. Total, 16 of them in the end !!! I played with them all and Gave away a few. None died. a couple look excelent already, most need time. Patience is part of the eastern philosophy and i enjoy the journey. A bonsai is never finished until it has died. Thank you for showing us.

    It's looking wonderful, wow what a huge mass of berries! My pyras are now at the younger stage like you got yours in 2018, (they were tiny cuttings rooted in 2018) so still only have a few bunches of berries, and a few more years before I'll do any work on them.
    Totally agree with the new front you found. Looking forward to see your future pot choice 😊

      I think what I need to do as I move the trees into the greenhouse for winter, is photograph each and every one of them, because being able to look back at this trres progress filled me with such pride and confidence :) xx

      :D It was bucketing down Una!! Katie flatly refused to go outside and do her business all day until it finally stopped at 10.30pm - I thought she was going to explode!!
      I remember bringing the Pyracantha home and proudly telling my husband I was going to use it for Bonsai, he looked confused, doubtful, and then horrified as I chopped 4/5ths of it off :D xx

    14:00 - We do understand Becki!
    I had that experience when I proudly showed off my Hornbeam to my brother and his partner, and partner said "how long will it take before it looks like a bonsai" and I deflated... (okay, I admit it is a log with spindly new branches, but... I know you would immediately see the potential) 🤔

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  2 года назад +2

      Ouch :( This is exactly the point I was trying to make, that beginners and non-Bonsai people often think that a tree can be created in one session (and unfortunately some Bonsai professionals reinforce this unrealistic idea). I hope you have photographs of your Hornbeam from the beginning just to remind you how far you and it have come on your journey together xx

      Thank you so much Janet :) xx Yes indeed, I actually liked the black glaze, but maybe it's a bit harsh/safe, so perhaps I could choose something with a deep dark glaze. I edited a whole chunk of the video out where I started waxing lyrical about drum pots, and how if I had no budgetary constraints I would love to own all the drum pots... all of them! :D

    Beautiful tree Becki. I was always a bit wary of the thorns, but now I know they can be snipped off i might try one!
    I did something similar with a small Cotoneaster from the supermarket a couple of yrs ago. 🤩

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  2 года назад

      Thank you Margaret :) Yes, I always get savaged by thorns, so snipping the tips off really makes a difference for me, with no negative effect on the tree.
      Fantastic, I love making something out of inexpensive material, and usually the weird, wonky ones are overlooked by regular shoppers, which is perfect for us! xx

      Hi Steve, thank you so much and welcome 😊 I just went for it!! I saw the tree, had a look at it for a day or so working out where best to cut, and ✂️ It's a very forgiving plant, and buds all over the place. There will come a time when you need to prune after flowering, so you'll lose some berries that year, but the tree will benefit from it in the long run 😊 Have fun with it, and feel free to share tree photos with me via email, Instagram or Facebook (links in the description box) xx

    Hi Rebecca I have a new question I have two beautiful Santa Cruz pyracanthas there are about to flower this variety has larger flowers and a larger Berry a few years a go I had one and it was great in spring summer and fall but when I got to Winter I could not get the watering right and I think I overwatered and killed it I don't want to make the same mistake do these trees require less water in winter

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi William, they seem to prefer it a bit drier. I'd be inclined to prop the pot, so that one side is higher than the other, allowing rain the run off. Or failing that put a sheet of perspex above to protect the trees from the worst of the winter weather xx

    1:56 "...very much a pre-bonsai"
    Becki!! This tree is a little stunner, I'm glad you said you are proud of it, as you should be, cos I'd call it a bonsai any day 🤗
    Can I ask, do you use the pumice/lava/akadama mix on this tree too and, if so, do you spend more on pre mixed or buy and mix yourself? (from All Things Bonsai website?)

      I buy all my soil components separately, so I can tweak the component proportions depending on the species. I haven't heard of All Things Bonsai (I'm off to have a look in a moment :) ) I actually tend to buy from bonsai2u.co.uk/ in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. xx

    Put the plant in a deep flower pot you will get much more growth than in that pot.

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  2 года назад

      Hi there 😊 That's definitely a plan Sayef, but the Pyracantha is prone to long, straight, vigorous growth. I want to keep this little tree Shohin size, so I'm now working to add age and interest by keeping the pot small, which will help reduce the internode length, bark texture and give an overall sense of age. If I increase the size of the pot now, I will undo all that work 😉xx
