Dr. Chan, I am almost 2 years late, but I am "catching up". Your short, self videos are brimming with very intricate information. You are more relaxed. (...in my humble opinion...)
Thank you so much for letting us watch how you trim the trees and telling the reason for the cuts. You are so generous with your skill and knowledge. I am getting ready to cut my very overgrown bouganville down and shaping it instead of just digging it out
I know I have wrote this before but it's worth repeating. Thank you so much for all your videos. They have been such a fantastic source of knowledge and information during my two years of bonsai. I wish you and the staff of Herons the best 2021 possible - kind regards from Sweden!
Good morning. Peter you are a great tree surgeon.🌳👷 I have seen some images of bonsai and they do have that topiary feature. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
In early May I was really lucky to harvest a really mature Pyracantha (trunk 6'' with a natural taper to 15 inch tall). Its potted up in a bucket till next Spring. I really am excited and look forward to working on it, and your instruction is so helpful so many thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to do this video. Best channel ever : ) Taking my chances in asking for a video on "moss". I can't seem to be able to keep moss green on any of my bonsais! Ta!!!
Peter! Big fan of yours! For your self-recordings, I would recommend one of those practical GoPro's with excellent image stabilisation and a strap on, either over your chest or forehead. With only one click you would be able to quickly and spontaneously record your day without holding a camera or asking one of your staff. Best regards from Austria!
I dont know much about GoPro devices but this would mean not using my iPhone camera. Isnt there a device that I could use with my iPhone to stabilise it while recording - like a gimbal ? Your advice would be welcome.
I never used to like Bonsai plants or thought it was something I could commit to. They are definitely a skill not everyone has the grit for. I do admire them but also used to cringe at the amount of torture it would have to go through to get to the artists desired shape. Just the type of gardener I would be is I like seeing plants grow and thrive... So cutting off all the growth you achieve always seemed like you are taking huge steps back. Like I would only prune plants if you see it's struggling or has a bad bug infestation. Saying that, is because I get attached to plants and I don't enjoy hurting them, as I want to solve its growing problems than present it with constant challenges. But I have started growing a bonsai plant myself from seed, since October 2020 to get over my fears. At the moment I'm just letting it grow as it wants to but going to shape it soon but I want it to flow in with its natural growth and build on that...
Plants are not animals - so they don't feel like they do. Dont ascribe human emotions to plants either. Pruning branches is like trimming ones hair or nails is you did want an analogy.
i have a curley walking stick tree LIMB that i've used as a christmas tree for years. been studying it and decided to make a few snips to clean it up. last night i trimmed off some interesting small curley limbs. today i'm wondering why i didnt do it sooner!!! it's been hard to not just start whacking, the tiny curls i cut off were not first choice, decided they were most fragile and could break off anyway. looks planned now, like a bonsai!!! thank you
Thank you master Chan. I would like one thing to make in your videos and that is to ware a Mic because when you zoom in the audio gets so much louder but when they pull the camera back and can hardly hear you. I love every video and appreciate your valuable time and hour skill and would never stop watching but just a little Mic would make them 10/10.

In a case like this, would it be possible to use a branch splitter to split the problematic branch in 4 sections, wire it, and then bend it to more aesthetically pleasing position? I would appreciate any opinions on the matter. Thank you for another great video!

Hi Peter, big fan! Just a question about my Chinese Elm, I keep it indoors in sun, do I need to give it a dormancy period, or will it be fine by the window all year? Cheers
Unless you are wanting to grow it into a long branch, then cut it off. If you want it to grow into a proper branch just leave it alone and it will thicken in time - be patient. That thick branch would be too stiff to bend by branch splitting. It is also very brittle and would break if we did that.
