Nice video! Here in Washington State I have Stellar Jays visiting constantly. One day one was vocalizing from the bushes not far from me. First he started with a Red Tail, I yelled at him, "I know you! You are not a Red Tail!" He paused for a few seconds then screeched like a Red tail again. I began screeching back at him like a Red Tail so he switched to mimicking a Bald Eagle. I laughed loudly and he emerged from the bushes with the classic jay wekwekwekwek as if to laugh back at me.
Imagine this: It's 7AM on a Saturday in July, and you live in the mountains on the west coast. The sun is just starting to rise, peeking through the trees and piercing the mountain air that is so still you can see dust floating in its golden rays. You slowly wake up and start to make tea and toast for yourself and listen to a few birds sing and you smile at a peaceful and wonderful morning. Suddenly "WEKWEKWEKWEKWEKWEKWEKWEKWEKWEKWEK"
I don't gotta imagine, I woke up to experience that several times when I was on vacation this month. Very entertaining, I also got to find some of the feathers and keep them
@@fireworksfanatics2777 Northern Sierra Nevada foothills dweller here. Even with the intense winter we’re having both Stellar and Scrub jays wait for me every morning. They love nothing more than eating the peanuts 🥜 I provide for breakfast. I’m so addicted to watching their antics that I go through 10 lbs every week! The Tractor Supply store has a huge bag waiting for me every weekend. These brilliant birds are worth the weekly $35 . 😊
A stellar jay with only one leg began coming to our house. All the other birds picked on him, so I started imitating his call. He now comes when I call and I feed him peanuts. Beautiful bird!
@Lone Wolf The ones I feed seem to like peanuts, corn and sunflower seeds the best, in that order. When I feed peanuts, they will usually pick up several before they fly away with one to either crack it and eat it elsewhere or cache it. I think they just try to find the heviest one.
I once saw a crow around an outdoor cafe that would pretend to have a mangled foot when he’d beg people for food. As soon as he got the food he’d walk off with two normal feet.
I have one near my house that mimics a hawk 😂 I think it's so he can scare off other birds to get food to himself 😂 it also explains why he went really quiet when I responded with the same hawk call lol
I feed both the Stellar Jays and the Crows. Both are from the same family of birds (Corvids). I love them both but the Stellers are quicker and braver grabbing peanuts off my balcony before the crows will, even though the crows are watching.
same with the stellar jays and crows i feed! the crows very rarely take the peanuts, actually. usually they just watch the jays... i'm convinced the crows are just stealing from the jay's peanut stashes 😅
Steller's Jays are my favorite Northwest bird Everyone calls them Blue Jays, no matter how many times i show them that they're two different species Yes, it's a jay. Yes, it's blue. It's LITERALLY a blue jay, but it's TECHNICALLY a Steller's Jay Mind-blowing, I know
Two of the resident around our house recently started clearing out the bird feeder area using a Red-Tailed Hawk call. Even had me fooled for about a week!
Lots of birds with crests (mohawk hair) use them to communicate. When it's up high it means aggressive where as when they keep it close to there head it means calm. Think of it like a cat raising the fur on its back
I leave a small handful of nuts out in the morning for the jays. Almonds usually, they’re picky and want nothing to do with peanuts. Today one came, landed on the perch, and started yelling. So now I’m here trying to figure out if it’s because today I dared to leave them peanuts or if it happened to see my cat. Fascinating birds!
Misophonia is a disorder in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might perceive as unreasonable given the circumstance. Those who have misophonia might describe it as when a sound “drives you crazy.” Their reactions can range from anger and annoyance to panic and the need to flee.
Not for me. When you're as beautiful as a stellers jay, I can forgive some ugly sounds. They make a wide variety of sounds, the most common of which is just a loud, hoarse screech, but some of the other calls are quite musical.
gorgeous fun birds, to watch, annoying calls. But love them and am lucky when they rarely visit my yard. They seem to only show up when the suet fat block is up. Picky lil ones.
Thank! I wasn’t sure if a group of birds I saw & heard in a state part is this one or not. Now I found the sound at 1:03 ☺️ The sound is very clear and in a good quality! May I ask you what camera you use?

When you've exhausted the hawk calls, you can then explore "falcon calls" by entering that term in the search box. Have fun!
These birds are pretty but so annoying. They have multiplied a lot over this past decade. Always gorging themselves at my bird feeder. They always chase off other birds I would rather have feeding If they start squawking too much I go out and clap my hands really loud every time they come and they fly off but I can't do that all day. I've seen as many as 8 at my feeder at a time. Ugh.
imagine just sitting in a tree screaming all day
i'm envious
what do you mean "imagine"?

Central Sierra Nevada foothills: its an awesome reminder of cold winters, usually pushes them down for a month or two

Russ Lehman do you take the shell off the peanuts

You missed the SQUAAAAA SQUAAAAAAAAA SQUAAAAAAAAAAAAA when they are scolding another bird or a human who goes near their food. That is the worst..
Haha, I wouldn’t call it “the worst”. To me that’s the classic corvid coming out.

"quick act normal I think I got caught"
I feed about a dozen of them who visit my yard and also have seen one making the hawk’s cry sound. So funny!
0:34 imagine having 20-30 of these in your backyard doing this call - been there.

What an awesome compilation! Thank you
The Steller's Jays and Blue Jays are just so awesome, i can watch them all day!🙃 😌 Thanks so much for these great captures!

I do this too a lot… you are not alone! 🤣
that was me until this morning.

I like their mohawk hair, probably makes em fly better.

Holy damn, grew up around water and hearing that Osprey mimic sort of sent a shiver down my spine. Spot on.
Amazing adaptation!
I so love these glorious birds

Thanks for the great video! Eugene, Oregon
My budgie 0 loves the wek wek calls, we have a stellar a jay who nests in our backyard and they will chat for hours
Such a graceful bird ❤
God the wek-wek calls I haven't heard since I was a kid...
Very nice vid of this very beautiful bird. Thank you!!
"Weak, weak, weak, weak, weak, weak, weak, weak!"
That's very hurtful Mr. Steller's Jay.🥺

The one that visits me regularly imitates a hawk (to scare the other birds from the feeder) and crows
Very nice. Thanks for posting.
I am so jealous of you guys who get to see these amazing birds.
I see Blue Jays instead of Steller’s Jays where I live.
I was playing this and a blue jay came to my yard lol
I like how you left out their most common and notorious call, likely because it would inspire nothing but hatred for these devilspawn.
Yeah I was wondering when the annoying one was gonna come
Not for me. When you're as beautiful as a stellers jay, I can forgive some ugly sounds. They make a wide variety of sounds, the most common of which is just a loud, hoarse screech, but some of the other calls are quite musical.

Ah darn. Still can't find a video reproducing a whistle call

I wish we had them here in sw fl! I feed a ton of bluejays tho! Love em
They must mimic something caus the Jay at my house sounds like a cyborg

The 1st one was golden eagle mimic
No it wasn't. It was definitely an osprey mimick. They are common in south central Alaska
Wonderful
the c-team brought me here
You didn't get its actual natural call tho.
The SJ's where I live imitate a hawk / falcon but cannot find the sound of which one it is? Any ideas?

have 5-8 that come by daily for peanuts..some scrub jays as well
Oregon or Washington?
ja they are real quiet until they get into a big bunch and start the mating rituals
Sorry but this video is a poor represntion of Stellar calls....not even close
