I have a friend that has had a blue jay in her house for 17 years now...he can't be in the wild, since he's never been. He has quite the personality. He likes who he likes and will even attack the phone if he hears the voice of someone he doesn't like lol.

I’m 70. When I was about 10 y/o, I was eating sunflower seeds, sitting on the grass under our backyard tree. This blue jay was in the tree watching me. He began hopping closer down the tree until he was on the lowest limb…about 8-10’ above me. I laughed and jokingly teased him with a few sunflower seeds on my open hand, raising my hand up to him. To my surprise, he swooped down and, without landing, took a seed. Maybe more, I dunno..but definitely took at least one seed out of my hand and immediately flew back to the lowest limb. I’d never been so stunned in my life and ran off screaming out this miracle to whomever would listen.

WHEN I WAS 14 ... I WALKED THROUGH A NEIGHBOR'S BACKYARD WITH A BIRD FEEDER .... SAW THERE WERE A FEW BIRDS THERE AND WALKED OVER SLOWLY ... GOT ABOUT 5 FEET FROM THE FEEDER AND STOPPED AND WATCHED THEM .... I PUT MY INDEX FINGER OUT (NOT OPEN HAND) AND THE DAMN BIRD CAME RIGHT OVER AND PERCHED ON MY FINGER AND TOOK A FEW SECONDS TO SAY HELLO ... THAT WAS THE HIGHEST PRAISE I HAD EVER BEEN GIVEN !!!!
WOULD ALSO FEED ROBINS BIRD SEED RIGHT OUT OF MY HAD ...AND SQUIRRELS PEANUTS OUT OF MY HAND ...

My Papa raised doves for three decades. When he found out he was dying, he released them all. He kept feeding them and they kept on living nearby. After he died, I started feeding them. The doves and, by then, their grandchildren and great grandchildren stayed to nest nearby. I fed them until I left home and went off to college to remain distracted. Four years later, I moved back home while looking for work. I'll be damned if some of those morning doves didn't come right to me the first morning I went outside with two pocketsful of Planters Peanuts. It was amazing.

Crows, unlike their Raven relatives, lack the beak to break open skin. They do eat meat, if it’s already been “opened” (like roadkill or another animals’ kill) but if the animal is intact, they eat the soft bits. This is why crows hung around gallows and gibbet cages- they’d eat the eyes. If the animal was alive and too big to swallow in one bite, I don’t think it would’ve bothered to try to eat something it can’t.

This takes me back to my High School days when I would sit out on the balcony doing my homework and feeding the Squirrels. All told, by the time I graduated HS there were over a dozen squirrels who would be waiting at the sliding door in the mornings and waiting on me to get off the bus after school. While sitting at the bus stop just outside my door, the other kids started walking to my house so they could feed them as well. Then one day, while doing my homework a Blue Jay landed on the railing, eyeballing the peanuts and me like....Hey Dude...can ya help a feathered friend out? This was my Junior year and I know the pecking on the glass alarm very well. Harvey and Mabel were the first two, then others followed. My neighbors all started spending more time out doors so they too could hand feed the wildlife. The saddest day was when I shipped off to the Navy after High School. When I returned home, my Mother had continued feeding the wildlife and Chipper, the first squirrel to eat from my hand was so visibly excited it was like she was about to climb right out of her fur. So heartwarming to have been remembered by that little tree rat lol. That's my story. Thanks to all who read it and thanks to The Dodo for this walk down memory lane. Zip~

When the babies were old enough she would introduce them to me. She was a character with her own very sweet personality. Sometimes she would come lay in my lap while I studied and sun herself while I fed the other critters. Good Memories! Thanks for reading my story!

Fun fact, Jays and Chickadees are some of the smartest birds with the highest cognitive abilities. Corvids including Jays have even been known to solve puzzles and use tools to obtain food. Chickadees even adjust how much they stash based on how hard the winter to come is going to be.

People don’t realize that sucks actually make wonderful pets! As long as they have the time to spend with them, and the space to allow them to run around and to swim freely. I got 3 ducklings one Easter when I was a kid. I raised them and we put up a fence in the back yard so they could roam freely in the yard with a little pond as well. They made great “guard dogs.” Also, they kept miles out of the yard bc they would eat all the grubs. I took one of their eggs once and used a home incubator and actually hatched a baby duckling. It was amazing. Just great pets.

    • @CayugaKing

@@mj6962They are the best! I have 4 extremely spoiled Cyuga ducks that my wife and I just simply can't ever get enough of. We made our backyard into a little duck paradise with several safe enclosed swimming ponds. We have a fairly large 1.5 acre garden that we grow their greens and even have a worm farm for them. Our neighbors love them(cyugas rarely quack) and we always have visits from the kids that live around us. They have become so popular in our neighborhood that we even give them birthday parties now🥳
If anyone is reading this and is thinking about getting a pet duck(or ducks) do know that I do spend nearly $700 a month on them between food , vet supplies, straw for bedding and an outstanding $340 water bill. You will be on their schedule so if you don't have 8hrs a day to dedicate everyday just be a duck fan instead of a duck owner. They WILL expect all your daylight time from sunrise - sunset.... But that is the best part of ducks imo👍.

I totally get it. I've got a 4 or 5 generation "murder" of crows that I've been feeding daily for years. They wake me up every single morning (which stinks on the weekends) and will even perch in the tree outside my office window to watch me while I'm working. When I'm taking too long in between breaks, they'll fly back and forth at the window level to get my attention - which really freaks out my rescue squirrel. I've now got Carolina Wrens (named Lo-Wren, Air-Wren and Cam-Wren) who land on my hand every day to get mealworms. It took a long time to gain their trust, but it's so cool building that bond with wild animals. Like many others out there, my hubby calls me Snow White too.

That's really amazing, that was cute when she said a different bird came every day to eat, it was like each bird was relating the message to others birds saying you can get feed by a sweet lady not far from them.

I love animals and the fact that God gave them to us to take care of is a privilege. And I hope more people will show compassion towards animals and also to each other. ❤️

It's been pretty hot here in N. California. I put fresh water out daily, when possible, for the birds and wild rabbits. We're out in the country and it's pretty dry. It warms my heart to see them stop by for a refreshment. 💖

@@JazzyJADAxxx no I don't. We had to change. So we personally in my home have gone green. There is plenty protein in broccoli 🥦. Better for my diabetic condition.

I had a relationship like that with an intire deer family. I had started to feed a doe that was very thin while nursing 3 fawns. Next thing I knew, the whole family group became my companions. I got the thrill of seeing 3 generations of new fawns. Sadly, I had to move to....was the saddest day of my life!

One thousand thumbs up! When I was in high school my step day would buy whole peanuts in the shell and we would throw them on our garbage roof. Well they of course rolled down and when they hit the metal gutters they made a distinctive clang sound . Dinner bell for the Blue jays they could be so far but as soon as they heard those peanuts hit the gutters it was magical !!!! I am a total bird feeder and the chickadees are so delightful but the poor things have to fly in very fast because they get muscled away by all the red finches !!!!! I also have a family of beloved chipmunks and it will crush my heart when I have to move these delightful creatures are the love of my introverted and contemplative life ! :-)

This was wonderful and nostalgic for me. We had Wing Nut at our farm for years. He had a wing that had been obviously broken and healed in a crooked fashion. When he arrived I started paying more attention to the bird feeders and made sure he always had food throughout the winter.
He couldn't fly but I watched him hop up the tree branches higher and higher until he got up high enough to glide to where he wanted to go. We have a 100-year old fir tree shelterbelt on the south side of the yard site, an old-growth Burr Oak forest in the northwest corner and a scrub poplar forest on the northeast corner. He could get anywhere on the 5-acre yard site by launching off the trees.
Unfortunately, West Nile in 2003 decimated our raven, crow and Blue Jay populations. Just last summer we had two Blue Jays return. I was so happy to hear their raucous noise at daybreak LOL

So cool. What a special spirit this lady must have for the birds to trust her like that. So sad she had to leave the first group of birds but so great to see she found another group of birds who warmed up to her. Great story

When you get this close to a wild animal, it's magic! When I lived at my homestead in the woods I got close to many of the animals there. I kind of miss them now.
