  • It would seem as if weather like this, is no big deal to them.
Steller's jays. With their vibrant blue and black feathers, spunky crest, loud calls, moving swiftly through the forest canopy.
I encountered these birds in this same area about a year ago. I wasn't looking for them at that time, but they found me...and my bag of trail mix. I pulled it out to have a snack when suddenly, I became very popular with the local flock.
They had been watching me. Silently and hidden, high up in the conifers, they knew exactly what they were doing. Up until this point, I didn't even know they were there.
I returned this year with the hopes of studying them and sure enough, they showed up. Of course, this was also with the help of a good supply of peanuts that I provided.

I adore steller jays. We have a pair that built a nest in a mature rhododendron in front of my home. I often perch myself quietly on my deck. I have a small view of the nest. I sometimes have observed the male feeding the female and now both feeding the babies. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to watch this little family grow. 💗💗

We live in the San Gabriel Muntains specifically Pine Mountain Club CA. We moved in approximately 1 1/2 years ago and I noticed these absolutely beautiful Steller Jays immediately. Noisy, very chatty and always called me outside to feed them bread. They are here year round. I have never been a bird person until I met them. i always felt they were warding off Bears or other large animals to protect me until I realized they were calling for food. I visit them almost every day.....they are truly fasinatting. Thank you for you article.

ive got 25 to 30 stellers jays that i have been able to attract over the last two years with placing constant goodies out for them on my bit of land on the Olympic Peninsula. its a sight to see them all at once. a bag of shelled peanuts scattered about shows how they are most entertaining. i cant wait for the next brood to start raiding my feeders in the upcoming months. thanks for a great bit of content!

I have them that hang around the house. They wake me up every morning around 10am. I usually feed them daily at around 1030. I love watching them. I too live in the olympic peninsula. Wont drop my exact location but inbetween shelton and elma.

I was hiking in Garbaldi Park one day and stopped to take a lunch break. Once I had my ham sandwich in my hands, one landed on my fist, took its share and flew off. Totally unexpected.

Thanks for sharing this. I have a young male Stellars Jay that has come back to my yard for the second year and this time with his
mate. I'm so excited. Year round I feed birds and California Scrub Jays and the new pair of Stellar Jays seem to enjoy the peanuts I normally put out for the
Scrub Jays. These two are awesome, beautiful and very interactive with each other. I hope to see their babies this summer. Corvids are my favorite.

Same experience. I had one alight on a fence not 12 inches away from my face and just look at me. Utterly fearless. But my Life Histories book says they are shy? Nah, just easily spooked.

When I moved out to Washington State, and first saw one it was from the corner of my eye kinda thing. Thought I mistook it for something else all together.
Then I finally saw one fully, and was in love with their colors and feathers

I'm lucky enough to see these fellas every day at Devil's Lake in Oregon. The deep blue & black variant with only blue above the eyes, no white. They are always the quickest to spot me filling the wildlife feeders and will swoop in for the peanuts before anyone else. We're a hotspot for osprey, so they often mimic that call.

Thanks so much for this lovely video! I have many hawks in my backyard as well as many Steller’s jays. They don’t just mob the hawks; they go after them one on one! I have a video of a red-tailed hawk sitting in a redwood while a jay circles around and around, jumping on the hawk’s head each time and squawking. He would then fly around to a branch on top of the hawk, and dive toward his head again!
The biggest mobbing I ever saw by Steller’s jays was when a coyote walked through our backyard. I came running to see what all the racket was about, and a huge number of Steller’s jays was divebombing the coyotes head! Like the hawk, he played cool, but exited in a dignified way.

Yes, we have them in Eugene Oregon. They are always a treat to see. Our seem to be much darker, nearly black or very dark navy. As you say, they are elusive and I haven’t noticed the feather bars. Ours don’t have any white. I am always thrilled to see them. Thanks for posting this!

We have Steller's Jay here in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. My parents have at least one pair that nests near their backyard. I have seen them occasionally in my backyard but I am far more likely to see California Scrub Jays that next in our neighborhood.

That’s super interesting! I live an hour north of Seattle and I have about 10 Steller’s jays visiting my yard daily for peanuts. I had never seen a scrub jay until last winter one showed up while the others were collecting their peanuts and I almost thought I was hallucinating! They must be expanding their range northwards.

I lived under the Douglas firs for a year and became very familiar w/ these beasties. The strangest behavior was mating season- two plump brownish females sat immobile while a dozen {?} males frantically scouted and provided food for them. Eventually the entire group would slowly shift position, methodically clearing the area of anything edible.
