Why do geese fly in the "wrong" direction?
Have you ever noticed a flock of geese that seem to be flying in the "wrong" direction during migration? Perhaps during fall migration you see geese that seem to be going any direction other than south? Are they confused or off track? Geese do a lot of training before heading south. Building muscles, training for formation flying, following leaders, etc. These are local flights, so can be aiming for a certain area to teach, say, skills at landing and taking off, or just meandering to get flight time. Canada geese demonstrate some intelligent flying skills. As I watch, say, Sandhill cranes, they seem to rank lower in the IQ pole. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

@ G’fay, Diane. One day, I had just lifted off the runway, my wings were, say, 50’ above the ground, and a young Canada goose appeared just in front of my right wing. It got a VERY surprised look on its face; I did too. I banked left to raise the right wing, the goose dove and we missed each other. My guess is that the goose was scared as all get out, and had a story to tell its grandkids? Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I live at the 33rd parallel in Southern California. We have many Canada geese in this area. When I started feeding them and the wild ducks several years back, I noticed that these geese were here year-round. Sometimes they would have juveniles around during the fall, and you can see that they weren't ship shape enough to migrate. I think the geese have things down. They spend a lot of their time in a local park that has man-made ponds. From there they go to various Fields later in the afternoon, where you can see them digging for grubs with their beaks. Before dark, the leaders start honking and they get into formation to travel to the places where they sleep at night. A lot of them spend the night in the park. There's a gated amphitheater with a high metal fence. You can see them in there at night. They're fastidious enough not to poop in there.

A new bird caught my eye near the feeder today. Then I saw another; a pair! My research showed that they were catbirds. The beautiful blue-gray body and the blackish tails were all could see at the time. I learned that it is cousins to the state bird of Texas, the mockingbird. It was an exciting site to see them for the first time!

i had a costa's hummingbird nest under my patio last year, she fledged a boy & a girl. the boy sits on the plants outside my kitchen window doing his high pitched squeals/chirps & watches intently as i wash dishes lol. putting up multiple hummingbird feeders was the best idea. love seeing all the different kinds of hummingbirds pass through on their migration & i'm grateful my lil costa's have stayed with me all year. hopefully i will get to see the boy do his display sometime soon, almost all his beautiful purple feathers are grown in now :)

I have. A road runner that knocks on my picture window at ten am every Morning. I don't know if it's a she but I call her a she. I've been live trapping my eyes, so that's what she wants.I'm sure. I knocked back on a table and she'll knock back communicating with me. I've just seen the one or there might be two. She's been around about a year and a half. She only started knocking on the Window this summer.
