What happened to the heron rookery?

- During the spring I made a post on the community page of this channel saying I was keeping tabs on a nearby heron rookery. My plan was to make a video at the end of the breeding season showing the progression of nesting to the fledging of the next generation of herons. But unfortunately, this didn't happen, and the heron rookery became vacant by the end of May. Come along with me on this journey as we watch the herons up until the time they left, and explore possible reasons why they weren't successful this year.

7-12 years ago, there were many such heron nests along the Maple River in south-central Michigan. C,ear up on the tops of trees. I’d seen heron families in Canada, but had never seen them here. The nests have all gone now, and the birds have moved.
Raccoons are a rapacious scavenger, one of - if not the worst - wrecker out there. They leave a trail of wreckage behind themselves. The only good aspect of pythons in Florida is that raccoons are disappearing.

A rookery I saw recently on an island in the St-Lawrence seaway (at the border between Ontario and Quebec) seemed exceptionally active and healthy. There seemed to be over 20 nests with many parents sitting on their clutches observed. I can't imagine many land predators crossing to the island in the strong currents, and that is probably why the colony is established there.
Poor birdies, I hope they have a better year next year :(
Fascinating video. Thank you. Although I have seen great blue herons many times in this part of Northern California. I had no idea that they formed rookeries..
I've seen the same thing at a couple heron rookeries near my house in Wisconsin. Some years they seem full and busy, other years they are empty.
A fascinating video. Thank you. Although I have seen great Blue Herons many times in this part of Northern California, I had no idea that they formed large rookeries..love your channel
Thanks so much and glad you enjoyed it!
We have herons and tall cottonwoods, but I’ve never seen a rookery.
We do have a lot of red tails.
So many empty nests, how sad 😢. Here in my region of 🇨🇭 I also saw nests disappearing year after year ... We have no racoons nor Bald Eagles.
I explain it with falling trees (forest industry cuts a lot) or habitat invaded by more and more human visitors 😢. Here 😢
