As someone who just realized I had a family of scrub Jay's living in my backyard - I appreciate all the facts about these smart little guys. Simply amazing stuff

They are all over the sierras and are prober environmental engineers. Not only do they bury acorns, in the pine forests they do it with pine seeds, in the high desert juniper berries. They are great hiking companions too, they will sound alarms and harass predators like cougars and coyotes, also if you're in their territory give them some water and you'll be considered a friend. They attack any coyote we see but not my husky when we're outside. Very intelligent birds.

My backyard Scrub Jays go through 50 lbs of raw, in-the-shell peanuts each month. I buy 25lbs sack on Amazon twice each month.
These noisy fellas wait for me each morning for their daily-all day long servings. LOL.... They own me for sure. They also enjoy eating almonds, walnuts and pecans. (no-shell).

I'm up in Oregon. My folks have a couple scrub jays in their backyard that eat MAD peanuts from the feeders. They're definitely aggressive, high-energy, dominant, territorial, etc. You can tell just watching them how smart they are. They know exactly what they want and exactly how they're gonna get it.

Welcome back, Michael! Love the Gandalf hair!! You just need a wizard's staff...
And yes, Scrub Jays are awesome. So glad you're soaking up Kate Marianchild's book, there's a lot to learn in there for all of us. I agree that Jays are "super-spreaders" (of acorns) and have co-evolved with Oaks. Those symbiotic relationships are so fascinating.

Thanks Tyler, it's good to be back. These relationships or just a wonderful door to open. Speaking of staff I've thought about learning kung fu, and learn how to use a staff for self defense. More for the art of kung fu. But it's just a thought nothing in cement yet. We need to do a video agian, mybe on zoom or something. Much love my friend to you and your family.

I saw a scrub jay in my yard so I set out a couple of peanuts on my fence, and I’ve had the most delightful experience. This bird comes once in the morning, and then once in the afternoon- Quite politely between the times the other birds that visit my porch like to be around. I joke with my mom that he’s on his way to and from work and stops by to get a snack on the way. California scrub jays were always how I could tell spring had come during school cause they’d hang around the schools. So I wonder if this scrub jay is a teacher lol

We have Steller's Jay's here on our place in western Oregon, and there was a lot of squawking this afternoon. We were investigating it and found a California Scrub Jay high up in a Douglas fur tree. They may be migrating north.

I live in Vallejo, and I was trying to feed some crows in my yard, but they weren't coming around as much, so I left a bunch of peanuts on my front porch table (covered and on 2nd story). One day they up and disappeared completely, like a dozen all at once, I was lost as to where they all went. A day later I found a scrub jay landing on the railing looking around and it finally came together, they robbed us of all the peanuts! It's been a couple of months now, and we slowly leave out a peanut every once and a while just to watch the scrub jays come up, land, and snatch up the peanuts. He's so used to the peanuts, he'll come around 2-3 times an hour even when no peanut is there.

About 20 hrs ago I got injured while working for the local zoo and was put on medical leave for almost 3 months. But I was so accustomed to waking before dawn and rushing around to feed and care for animals that after 2 or 3 days I was going absolutely stir crazy, so I hobbled out to my porch with a breakfast sandwich and started scanning my neighborhood for random wildlife. While I was out there, a scrub jay came down from our acorn tree and was picking up fallen acorns, searching for any that might look appetizing, I guess, and without even thinking, I tore a corner of my bread crust off and rolled it into a ball and tossed it his way and what happened after that changed my entire opinion of those birds forever. Growing up, my encounters with those guys had not been very pleasant since they seemed to like nesting in the various fruit and nut trees we had in our yard and it seemed like every time I wanted a plum, almond or pecan I was getting viciously attacked by one or two of them. Not only that, but I'd seen them bully several of our cats over the years any time they ventured out into the yard to sleep in the shade or go to the bathroom... so I thought these guys were aggressive and mean. But after 1 balled up piece of bread crust, this brave little bird decided I was friend and he got closer and closer and by the time we finished that sandwich, he was almost eating it right out of my hand. By sunrise the next morning, I'd already researched what they eat, and believe it or not, sliced bread was not a part of their regular diet 😂, so day 2 as the sun came up, I ate a bowl of cereal and when my little blue friend flew up to the railing on my porch, I slowly extended my arm with a handful of peanuts. This must've impressed him because he wasted no time snatching one from my hand and flew back up into our tree. A few minutes later there were 2 birds on my railing! So this became my life's purpose while I was stuck at home healing, trying each morning to out do the treats I'd had the day before and I found myself spending more and more time out there, trying to mimick their calls and just exist in their world. And by the time I was finally cleared to go back to work, I had about 4 maybe 5 scrub Jay friends. I still got up early every morning and fixed them a plate of breakfast goodies to wake up to, and every night after work I'd sit on the porch and talk to them until the sun started to set or until my mother would call and tell me she was on her way home, because we discovered one night that if I was out there when she got home, they'd attack her trying to protect me as she tried to enter the house😂. Crows get all the fame and glory when it comes to the corvid family, but these lil guys are just as cool. ❤ Thank you for recognizing their awesomeness and for spreading the word.

I moved to the US less than a year ago and I've just seen this bird for the first time😍 I had a nervous breakdown because of my (not young at all) bf, who doesn't listen to me or listens but doesn't hear me. I was so fed up with it. And I don't have any close friends to support me, he was the only one. I went outside letting the sun give me a bit of warmth I was lacking, and then I saw this bird and it calmed me. So beautiful. I rushed to RUclips to find some information about it and watched your video. The other two I watched were boring. But yours... Thanks, man😆 You made my day. I'll go pray and remember that I should rely on God only. He says in Mt 6:26: "Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are?"

It’s been a while good to see ya! I did not know that about the Bluejay being an east bird that’s interesting! A scrub jay it is...It’s kind of cool that they are acorn delivery birds planting all the seeds for all these oak trees that’s great! And I love how they’ve got this plan in their mind it’s like the birds five year plan! They could start a business and that business would do well! What a system they have!

A week ago in Northern California on the bike path where I walk almost every day, I passed by a baby scrub Jay fledgling standing next to a rose bush. I was tempted to take him home and feed him until he was a week or so older, but I heard that you should always leave baby birds alone because the mother bird is near by standing guard, so that's what I did. The next day I went by the same spot and the bird was dead. It looked like he had been attacked by some bully bird. I guess I did wrong. It made me sad. Maybe his parents were divorced and neither one wanted the kid.

We have mockingbirds and scrub jays around my house and I occasionally play their calls to see what they will do. They are definitely territorial, and the look on their faces when they find a human at the end of the line is too funny. They are smart and have great memories and are entertaining to interact with.

The Scrub Jays in our neighborhood are the most human-like birds of all.
They will literally just come up and kind of hang out with you.
However I never observed The Scrub Jays bullying. They're loud and they look like they have a lot of fun but when they are around all the other birds don't seem to be stressing their presence.
My brother who lives out in the desert has pinion jays. They're hoodlums and very aggressive.

Very informative video! I've been feeding a pair of ravens for a few years now and have really fallen in love with these smart birds. Now, I have a pair of scrub jays waiting for food in the morning too!
I did not know they are also in the corvid family, but makes sense. They also seem very smart and like to eat the same things, and the ravens don't seem to mind them too much as long as I put enough food out for everyone.
I'm in S. California on a mountain that burns frequently, so I'm happy to know they help replant oak trees.
What surprised me most about the jays is how close they get when I'm putting their food out. They hop over and peer into the special feeder I made for them to discourage squirrels while I'm filling it, stay close by until I leave. Very cute!
My raven buddies started bringing me gifts @ a year ago, mostly machine parts and things that are round. I was gifted with about a dozen metal washers in December, and ended up needing them for a project. They saved me a trip to the hardware store.
My favorite gift was a pair of small titanium snips like gardeners use for pruning. "Igor" squawked to get me to come outside so I'd see him drop them. The day before, he had watched me cut brush with a pair of loppers, basically these snips were a smaller version of those! How smart is that?? Funny thing is, these snips were covered in sticky resin so they were "stolen" from one of the local weed growers. They retail for @ $18, I found a pair just like them at the hardware store. I use them and make sure Igor sees me using them.
I have a large bag of all the stuff he's brought me. One of these days I should make a video about him and his lovely bride, Elsa. They are named from a Frankenstein movie, "The Bride of Frankenstein" was played by a beautiful actress, Elsa Lancaster. The bride hated the monster and the doctor, so I figure that only left the lab assistant, Igor, for a love connection. LOL
