  • The Big Five Uk Owls, and how to recognise their Calls. There are 5 resident Owls in the Uk. Learn how to differentiate their different calls, from the adult Call, the Alarm Call and the Begging Call of Juveniles. So hopefully next time you hear an Owl,you will recognise which type of Owl it is,and whoooo might be watching yooooo, even if you cannot see it.
Most Owls are nocturnal or crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), although there are a few that can be seen during the day. The more nocturnal an owl is the darker their eyes. Crepuscular owls tend to have orange eyes while those out in the day have more yellow eyes, such as the Little Owl.

Think I've just heard a Tawny owl alarm call whilst watching the Perseid meteor shower near my house. Sounds like the strings part from the shower scene in Psycho -a bit unnerving when stood in a dark field on one's own!

@@MrJoeBetts That's great. They do sound very primordial sometimes! Nice to see the Perseid meteor shower,i also watched it one year, and it was amazing how clear it was. I saw about 70 meteors, and could even see some splitting into two.

Gorgeous birds -- and such a variety of calls! We have around 13-14 species of owl here in Colorado, but I mostly only come across Great Horned owls and Barn owls in our suburban neighborhood. What a lovely introduction to the the ones in your part of the world. Enjoyed, L.

Great, happy you enjoyed our little troupe of owls here in the Uk 🙂 Wonderful that you have so many species there!,but as you say, rarely seen. Which is what makes them so exciting when you do spot one,or at least hear that they are about 🙂🦉🎶

@4:00 there's a call in the background - does anyone know what it is? it's goes from low to high, like "oo-eeh". I've been trying to ID it for ages! In this recording it sounds faraway, it's not one of the foreground owls.

Good observation. I believe that it is a Nightjar. When not churring, the Nightjar sometimes makes this high sound intermittently(and also wing clapping),so i am fairly sure that is what it is.
