I have a Patreon, but honestly, I've never done anything with it. I believed in what I thought was the original model - to bring back the opportunity for people to become patrons of their favorite artists, so that those artists could concentrate on their artwork. Da Vinci and many others had patrons, and this is how they survived. Patreon is.. not. It seems to me that it's more a place for artists to make money by teaching other artists, rather than for pure patronage. I've been thinking about this for a while, so I'll definitely check out your other vid, thanks. And thanks for this one. You settled my mind on something I've struggled-with: Consolidating all of my various sites and social media together, and turning my RUclips channel into more a creative haven, rather than a location for a single type of thing.

RUclips is without a doubt my favorite place on the internet and I highly agree with you on this topic. It has been a game changer for me in so many aspects of my life, and even though I'm not monetized as of now, I'm working hard trying to build my channel up to that point where it will allow me to work full time on my art and creative work. Hopefully I'll get to that point soon! RUclips is also a wonderful FREE resource for education for many and most of the skills that I've learned in the last 10 years or so has come from RUclips. I definitely believe that the future of many things is RUclips. 😊

I think most artists on youtube are doing basic studio vlogs because youtube is straight up a second job. I love the idea of creating high quality youtube videos, but it takes so much time and effort : we need to publish at least 1 video a week to grow our channel, meaning that every week, we not only have to do our actual job of creating art , running a business, etc. But also having a full on second job of planning, documenting, editing.. a video. It takes a lot of energy to create meaningful art, i think it also takes as much to create wonderful videos. It is very challenging and i have been finding myself to be spreading myself too thin, especially as it is the beginning of my art journey. I don't understand how we can make and sell art while also managing a youtube channel full time. If we spend all of our time creating youtube video, we have less time making actual art. And then priorities change and we become content creator instead of actual artist because we spend more time on it. I see my favorite creators burning out and a part of me is scared this would happen.

    • @KelseyRodriguez

A lot of channels both established and starting out really don't upload once a week. Valerie Lin uploads like once a month and has from the beginning. Megan Wang uploads every other week, same with Paloma AFAIK. Leigh does like once a month or something now. I think the era of a weekly studio vlog is ending. You're right, artists need more time to make art & make a quality video. The answer is to this is to just upload a bit less. Once a week is great when you're making RUclips a habit and learning the ropes, but after a while it's not sustainable and you need to space things out more. I hope that helps!

I agree, it becomes more of a filmmaking journey than artist's journey. It's hard to focus on making art while creating youtube videos I can't even imagine how time consuming it will be. I rather just make art and post it and not have to talk to an audience about the art itself, some of us just aren't good at that.

As an artist with a RUclips channel that's fallen WAY by the wayside, this is exactly what I needed to get myself pumped up again! I remember how much I loved the process of putting together a video, and I'm so looking forward to doing it again, but better. I LOVE the idea of making art vlog style videos but thinking of them as movies--not dramatizing our lives necessarily, but treating them as something worthy of a movie. I don't have the energy to comment on as many videos as I would like, but I really wanted to comment on this one--thank you!

As someone with a lot of struggling artist friends, I watched art youtube for a bit and was surprised to see a number of creators seemingly thriving. But, as you mention, its limited to a certain subset of artists. Its often cute, pretty, or quirky illustrations turned into prints, stickers, and other small reproducible items, and the videos themselves usually try to offer similar cozy, asmr, relaxed vlog vibes. RUclips could certainly dictate some mass market trends, but I don't think its the future of art. Algorithms encourage sameness, making videos is a ton of work, as is having to present both your work and yourself. Its certainly right for some artists, but not most. And if it does work for you, it might be worth double checking whether your art is a reflection of you or a biproduct of algorithm consumption.

I entirely agree that the personal connection will be a crucial element to distinguish the individual artist against the tide of AI/CG art that is about to come flooding in over the next however many years. In recent years, I have been particularly impressed by how many museum exhibitions have worked to really emphasize the sense of the community and context that a particular artist lived in, rather than simply presenting work as a sort of Platonic object. An excellent example just a little over a year ago was the amazing show at the Boston MFA that really emphasized Basquiat's friendships and fellow artists, performers and musicians in the larger Hip-Hop and Graffiti subculture of New York City in the early 1980s. Now THAT was a breath of fresh air, and it really gave me a much better sense of that era and his place in it., as well as also introducing me to artists that I otherwise would have never heard about.

Most of them like ross draws, sam does art etc take the damm AIs like a toy, cuz they are already well positioned..
And dont give a f%ck about the 99% left.
AIs devs tryied to do the same with music not long ago, and the industry take them down faster..

That's exacly THE topic I have on the back on my brain like 24/7... I tried YT but "failed" finding my voice in it. I will love to go back at it when I also go back to making art seriously (I kinda took a break to stay at home with little girl) and I'm really want to find my way of making art video because the actual very aesthetic way of doing it, although is a joy to watch, is a real pain to make... Thinking of every different angles to shoot, every broll, etc... drain my brain power from the actual work of art I'm trying to make in the first place! Congrats to all of you that manage to so, but I think I really need to find a way to make video about my creative process even if I'm not dressed for the camera, or if suddenly I want to work late in the evening etc... My point is, I don't want that the video making part becomes bigger than the actual artwork itself.

True. I guess that to sell these days you've got to be good at self--promotion, that's just a given. The problem with this as a system however is that some individuals may be absolute geniuses at their art but less adept at performing in front of a camera. Sadly, this is likely to mean that both those individuals and society as a whole miss out on them sharing their gifts, as it always has done to an extent. Yes, it's a lazy example but I'm thinking Van Gogh. Would he appear before or after the lobe amputation and how well would that go down with the fans ? Would the amputation actually get him more hits ? I'm just throwing it out there. What about dear old Rembrandt ? Do you think he would have fared better in old age when he was a broken alcoholic ? Would that have sent the fans crazy maybe ? Or maybe Richard Dadd from Bedlam Asylum ? I think in the 20th Century we already got to a pretty sad point in terms of the commercialisation of Art, marketing gimmicks and self-promotion and so I guess the trend is set to continue

I think to sell these days you first need to grow an incredibly thick skin - people can and will say the most horrible things because you can't see THEM. As such, introverts can be crushed, destroyed by a single comment. Beware, be very aware, be wary. There's got to be a better way for the quietly talented individuals we are ALL missing out on!

I love writing and I love illustration, but it always bothered me that I couldn’t make content on creative writing that was similar to how art channels have done it. So I thought, what if I merged the two so that instead of the typical timelapse or do a drawing process video, why not blend both? Show my art process and tell the story-the actual story tied to the piece-all in the same video.

I’ve also heard from creators who both stream and make videos how different the community building is on Twitch since there’s a bit more direct and immediate interaction, especially in smaller streams, while RUclips comments can feel more one sided. Kelsey, thank you so much for an another great video which I find inspiring. I think that having a worldwide audience and building the community of artists and creators is indeed so vital these days if one wants to grow as an artist. I'm in my mid-forties and I've realised that there's so much I can (and should) learn from the younger generation...saying that, however, the thought of having my channel on RUclips and letting thousands of people hear my voice and watch me talk fills me with profound anxiety...Hats of to the youtubers who overcame this kind of fear...:-)

you definitely get over that anxiety pretty early on, at least in my experience! I'm a super anxious person too but filming today feels the same as it felt two years ago, ie I'm usually alone in my apartment talking to an inanimate object. It's a confidence building exercise for sure, but one that's well worth it

RUclips is great for getting me to draw something for a video, and if people watch the video, great, i like entertaining/helping people 😀 I do know I need to make videos a bit more personnel, but that will come with time (and a better camera lol)

I love these videos so much! You're so encouraging and have so much. All art-related videos i watch are either vlogs or educational. I feel like much more people are watching vlog-like videos nowadays than a couple of years ago. I look forward to see yours!
If (and only if) you take video suggestions, i would like to learn a bit more about which income streams that are suitable for those who are recovering from (or are prone to) burnout.
I feel like having more than one income stream is rule no.1 but I've been thinking a lot about art licensing this year for example, but what I'm mainly confused about is how larger companies, let's take IKEA as an example, find artists and choose designs. I feel like there is a huge difference in how things works in theory vs reality. Like, do they find you - or do you need to reach out to them? I've seen many different art licensing websites but unsure if companies actually use those. And if they do, is it possible to generalise the most common use case (e.g. wallpaper, fabric, ceramics etc)? There are also a lot of technical stuff that I would like to learn more about. E.g. what is considered a normal/minimum percentage if you take royalties? If I upload rasterized (non-vector) designs, which resolution should I choose? Basically more technical stuff about how it works in reality.
Your videos has always been a good "reality check". Thank you for taking the time to read all of this! Have a lovely weekend! ❤️

I like the idea, but i don't think its all as simple as that. Building followers and subscribers, is an extremely slow going process. It takes tons of time to build an audience who trusts the person they're subbed to or following, and often that doesn't translate to clientele or even regular watchers. To be honest, its extremely hard to 'sell' anything including watching free videos. A lot of times you have to battle social media's algorithms that prevent the people who like seeing your content from seeing your content. Its definitely helpful to use what tools you can, but I don't think youtube is necessarily required to establish connections with people either. I'm sure some people luck out, the right place and times, but otherwise its a great deal of work, effort, and time. Maybe my issue is the framing here, its a nice sentiment and dream, but I don't think people should go in thinking that this is going to be the answer for them, without realizing its not easy work before investing. Go into it realistically, I guess. Sorry for the length.

You're absolutely aware of everything I'm about to say here, but I'm using it for the opposite reasons.
That IS kind of a big statement, when youtube first started and was based on views we had that same sentiment, the algorithm and the pivot time watched basically killed the youtube animation community, so they've had a history of being anti-artist in terms of the algorithm. The animation community got hit hard from it because of the switch from views to watch time, which animations take A LONG time to create, just to release a SHORT. Obviously this means that artists need to figure out a better way to create and monetize their content, and yes animations still come out, but a lot of them are or were funded through patreon. Time lapses seem to be the most effective way to increase watch time for artists, but that's not exactly sustainable for all methods of art.

I get what you mean! One of the reasons I created my first video is so that I could find something to do outside of art, but also because its a useful way for me to share my art. I'm cautious about how much to show because I tend to get anxious about revealing information on the internet (rightfully so, because what the internet does to fem-presenting creators is sometimes absolutely vile, especially those further marginalized). But I'm taking steps to get outside my comfort zone. Art is how I express myself, and I like seeing how other artists get to express themselves too. It's a unique way to document your creations

I tried to be on youtube but no expressive growth...
The most popular artists I know on youtube do 2 things:
Art tutorials - Teaching the craft itself.
Art vlog - Talking about anything concerning art (especially how to make money)
That said, I think youtube is not for the makers. It is for the talkers. Doing art, and building something meaningful takes a lot of time and effort, and to grow on youtube you need a certain regularity.
I spend most of my time doing work for other people and companies, which don't allow me to show the process or the work.
besides, I spend a lot of time writing and drawing my own stuff, and in my spare time, I practice.
for me, making video tutorials is out of the question, I'd go for Art Vlogs as you did. I'm good at talking, but my English is not that good, so everything becomes a little harder... I'll probably do it only in Portuguese.
Anyways it is part of my plans to be on youtube...
It is indeed an important tool for connecting with the public.

I've always wanted to make episodic content with a long running series, but I've never wanted to work in the film industry in itself. I worked as a PA on some TV sets years ago and it just wasn't for me. I didn't want to deal with all of "that" mess. It felt more like a rat race.
But on RUclips I've seen so many people make animated d&d content (I'm a huge nerd, all I do is work on d&d games) and I wanted to too. My first episode comes out soon and it feels like I'm actually working on a show. We have voice acting, storyboards, and more. And without youtube I wouldn't be able to put this out there and instead would have to go through the hoops of the industry and HOPE someone at the top likes my pitch for an idea of a show.

A lot of people watch vlogs just to have something in the background to keep them company while they do their own thing(similar to having the tv or radio on in the background), not to have their mind blown with innovation and new information. So I think there is space for ALL types of content on here. I know I don't have time to keep my eyes glued to the screen for everything I play on here, and I'm sure that's true for most people.
I will say, the vlogs that I find very boring are the ones where someone is literally just sitting there, talking to the camera, and not actually showing clips of doing anything, just talking about what they did. I have stopped watching a couple artists because that is the only content they were putting out. I think having a good mix of talking to the camera, action/process clips with voice over(or just music) and being real(sharing the good and the bad) is the best type of vlog.
There are also successful youtubers who never speak in their videos or show their face, so as I said, I think their is space for all types of content on here.

I think this idea of the content being 'stale' on RUclips has more to do with how the algorithm works; by pushing stuff in front of us which resembles content we already consumed - rather than showing us new, unique, experimental channels with great creative ideas. For those gems, oftentimes, you'll have to do some serious digging - originality doesn't always feel rewarded on RUclips, but I'm hopeful this will change in the future.

I agree. I made this account in 2006 as I wanted to do movies using special effects among others. And I've been doing my latest season of my game review show, the opening credits anyway(13th Season. Wow.)in a more cinematic style. For me I do not plan to monetize, this is only a hobby for me, but it gives me in my opinion more artistic license as I'm not worried as most if I use licensed music. And one of my inspirations was a well done post called Art of the Saber, which interwove a Civil War letter written by Captain Sullivan Ballou before The First Battle of Bull Run, to his wife, as a lightsaber battle unfolded. And the way they do it is superb. The lightsaber fight choreography is beautiful in every sense. Thank you for saying this, this definitely needed saying. One more thing, when I applied to a school that specializes in editing, they asked if I had a RUclips channel. And to note, this was in 2011 when I applied. So I told them my channel, they asked suggestions, I told them, "pick whatever you want." As I stand by everything I make on here. And you know what, they enjoyed my video they chose saying I have charisma. Although they offered me a opportunity, I wasn't able to. But knowing that what I did on here impressed a college, not bad in the slightest. Keep making this world a beautiful and magnificent place. 😊🎮🖖🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️Marcus

What happens if you are an introvert, talented, great artist? Or what if your not willing to put yourself out there, to be commented on and be taken apart by random people online in the comments? I think it is too much for lots of people to ask them to, not just create and improve their art. That's already a job on its own, but to tell them that they also have to entertain and shoot videos and make tumnails and write a script for your video and edit and lighting....and also be consistent with posting and not to have the extra pressure of how to adapt to the algorith, and to try to create what your passionated about and not to bend to the likings of the audience. I think the day only has 24 hours and we are not all made for the public light, we shouldn't need to
