Why My Art Career FAILED The First Time

- I tried to launch an art career before I ever started to post on RUclips, but it failed. So did every other career path I tried before this one. In this video I want to talk about why most artists fail, why my first attempt at an art career failed, and what I'm doing differently.
In the end it all boils down to timing and effort. I was previously being pulled in too many directions and couldn’t choose which path to prioritize above everything else. Also, we’re celebrating two momentous occasions on the channel right now: my two year anniversary of posting on RUclips and celebrating hitting 30k subscribers!
You guys mean everything to me. I sincerely hope this video is useful for you all, I know my experience isn’t unique and that there are tons of us out there whose career paths haven’t been straight lines to success.

Kelsey thank YOU for making these videos and inspiring other artists like myself to give this whole thing a shot. I think it's your total transparency about this stuff that makes it so relatable to others. A lot of people on youtube make it look like a flawless linear process of being successful, which can make it seem unattainable at first. But I think if you're a person who truly enjoys making art and finds fulfillment in doing so, this is a great place to share it and find other art nerds too! The potential is here for sure. And I agree with what you said about at least making a 1% improvement from video to video, because that 1% means you've learned something! Also HAPPY CHANNELVERSARY!! 💜🔥💯

This video made me cry. This was the push I needed to follow my dreams and work hard at what I want. I have an amazing opportunity right now to start anything I want and fear has been in my way. I have new hope.
This honestly comes with great timimg. I was always drawn to creating art, drawing and over the last few years I only sat down every couple of months to draw, I felt like I was losing myself. I am just beginning my channel - there’s one video up, but it isn’t me, it is my friend, because he needed a way to share his music and I had a channel available, so I posted it for him, so he could share the link with a few of his friends. My original plan was to allow that to happen, then just take that video down and replace it with one of my own. Well, his few friends quickly turned into more view than he or I expected. I think within a day or so, there were something like 25 views, and he’d only sent the link to a handful of friends. So, I decided to just leave the video there. It certainly isn’t hurting anything. I think that video has about 90 views by now, which is fun for me and my friend - and fellow artist - Carl. In that video, he’s playing covers of a couple of songs.
My first ‘real’ video was in the works when I found Kelsey’s channel, but it had nothing really to do with art or creativity. I had not yet thought of sharing that part of me on RUclips. Upon watching Kelsey’s “They Lied to You” video, I realized that I needed to rewrite my business plan, and allow myself to be one of the artists who never starves. I put a hold on the videos I was working on. As a real estate pro in the Las Vegas area, I was working on some vids about buying and selling homes. My heart wasn’t in it. Not because I am weary of real estate. I’m not. I love helping my clients do what they need to do. But there are LOADS and LOADS of real estate videos that all pretty much say the same sorts of things. Where is the creativity in that? More importantly: What value am I adding? What’s unique about this content that viewers can’t find elsewhere? The answers sucked.
The more I worked on those videos, the more monotonous that work was becoming, and I had not even posted the first one yet. At that time, I was at the very beginning phases of learning to edit videos, understand things like keywords and other factors that can help a channel be successful. I am new to this process, and have a steep learning curve. I don’t remember what I was watching before clicking on the RUclips suggested video by Kelsey, but whatever it was, it had ZERO to do with art. I think it had something to do with monetizing channels and meeting those requirements or something. I know it was about money. Anyway, Kelsey’s “They Lied to You” video popped up as a suggested vid. I’d been told that same lie, so I clicked and watched, and decided to outgrow that lie I had been told, and to shift basically everything about my business plan, including the sorts of videos that I create for my RUclips channel. Because of that video, I decided that I have an ideal opportunity right now, to do exactly what I want to do, and let my passions propel my profitability. This is as it should be.

I know I’m seeing this a bit late, but thank you so much for making this video. Kept choking up because even though I think I’m a bit older, I related so much to you. I’ve started and stopped so many times and I’ve been my LEAST productive since the pandemic started. I can’t bring myself to finish or even start anything. You’ve given me some hope for the future, that maybe I can turn things around. Thank you for that.
I have to say that you have completed your mission in making a positive impact on the world. You inspire many with your channel, give artists hopes to accomplish their dreams. This is priceless and your experiences of your first trials and falls have made your story so relatable and able to speak to the lives of others. You are a great teacher and guide.
Hearing you talk about how your initial failure was that you didn’t have the resources to dedicate yourself to content creation was super validating. I feel like that is currently where I am at, and it’s easy to blame myself for not trying hard enough when in reality…. burn out is so real when you’re juggling all these things! i’m crossing my fingers that this summer for me will be similar to the summer you described!

As someone who hasnt even begun to work yet, i get the feeling of being pulled in many different directions and not giving my all to one career path, which would ultimately probably not work out. I’m so glad you came up on my home page today.
I have been acrylic pouring for almost a year now and I am head over heels in love, do it and every single minute of my spare time and never want to stop. It first started out being self-care, to find something just for me, as I was feeling lost within myself when my children were three and one. now they are four and two, while the days are still very long, filled to the brim with doing everything for two other humans and being their chauffeur to every class and therapy and doctor‘s appointment and everything else… my personal time is very short i am only able to paint after they go to bed and I clean the house and then I skip sleep to stay up late to paint. I’m in a position now where I need this self-care hobby to turn into a full-time job.
I’ve been recording videos for months but have them piling up because I hate video editing, I know it will get better with practice but damn it’s hard. I don’t have a computer or the funds to buy one, I am filming and editing on my iPhone. I’ll have to upload from there too when I get there.
Today as I finished painting and started my cleanup I wanted to watch some thing to help pass the time. you came up on my home page and it’s the exact perfect timing to have an artist present a playlist that started with your 7K+ month of May to help guide me into making art my profession. So many things that you’ve said in the last few videos resonated deeply having somebody list it all out has helped ground me and gave me a to do list.
I’m the type of painter who batch makes paint and works through all of it until it’s gone that way I can take a few day brain clear break and then start again. However with the need to turn this into a full-time job, I knew that when I finished my painting today it would be the last one that I do before I dive in feet first and make this work as a job because I have no other choice.
You telling your story that paint pouring didn’t work for you as your first artist job broke my heart and was discouraging for a moment but I love it and I know I want to start my art profession here.
Anyway long story short is I wanted to say thank you for being encouragement that I really needed today I know it was the algorithm that placed your video in front of me but honestly it felt more like you handed it to me on a SilverPlatter. So thank you.
I just wanted to thank you for posting this video :'). I was able to relate to your story a lot. I grew up in the same kind of household and went to college for education because I really wanted to make a difference and help people. I taught for two years but teaching absolutely drained me and made me so unhappy. I recently left education and I want to try and become a full time artist! Your videos give me so much hope that with a lot of hard work I can make it too. Thank you
thank you for this words, I now have a part time job but I really hate it, I studied animation, and getting a job in that field is really hard, but I need to earn some money. Man, the emotion I felt from you when you were talking about chasing your many interests. I feel like we all want to be someone great and has a life worth talking about but at the end it isn't really a thing you can do and wasting your time trying to push so and still fail is a pretty depressing situation in itself, and I felt this so much. Im glad life took you through the path it did because it led you here, to share your findings with the rest of the world and making a change. You're smashing it... just keep going, that's all that's required to make this last. My YT run lasted 12 years. I did basically nothing the last 5. It's really nice passive income but nicer when you're cranking out videos once a week. Best of luck!

This video and your channel was recommended to me recently and I am very thankful for it! I am a writer, artists, and I want to do animation soon. I just opened my own shop on ArtStation with my first print, I working on a story to publish, and I was making vlogs on RUclips but I haven't had very good luck. I brought the vlogs down in order to change content later and I kinda thought I wasn't going to come back. After watching this I think i'm motiviated to try again and maybe show more of my art on RUclips and my trial and error animations, etc. I do want to have a creative career and to share my stories no matter what format they take so thank you for your video! I'm inspired! I will keep working hard on it! Plus I think i'll be sticking around here too lol.
I have a question? How do you make prints? How do you go through with all these packaging and shipping stuffs? I'm literally super confused
@@makizenin1840 I thought I replied back to you but I guess I said something that wasn't allowed, I put it in the wrong place, or RUclips deleted it. I'll simplify what I said and that there should be some instructions somewhere online. There are multiple options to print and some you don't have to do the packaging and shipping youself.

You're experience echoes with me profoundly. Don't be afraid to reinvent yourself, life is too short to be stuck in an unhappy place.

i really appreciate you sharing this whole journey! i remember feeling like such a failure when i couldn’t get a biotech internship 3 years in a row, and i pivoted to a totally different career! people rarely share their “failures”, you made me feel so much better. also with youtube, girl your videos are such high quality i can’t imagine them ever being bad but that means that you really put in the work to improve! i tend to write off trying new things when i look around and see so many talented people doing so well, but you reminded me that we all start somewhere :) overall great messages here, can’t wait to see more videos from you

I think I found Catherine around that same time 2020 and it's really interesting to see how taking her advice worked out so well for you now. I started out in a similar situation to you. Have a major that I love that locally I can get no experience in which left me with art. I've tried and failed to stay consistent and get myself and my content out there but life has been tumultuous and hard and my mind has been my biggest enemy. But watching your videos gives me some hope.
Same here. I believe that this pandemic has really kinda drained us mentally and physically.
One of the things that's stopping me to make RUclips videos right now is money, time and my own space. I'm Asian and I'm still dependent on my parents for money and I'm also preparing for my entrance exam to get into a uni so my life is not going the way I want it to go🙃
And a uni degree is NECESSARY and very important in my country because nobody will give you a job if you don't have a degree and even after that the chances of getting a job is really low + my asian parents don't want me to rely on RUclips and neither they're willing to support at the moment so I have to do everything by myself. Therefore I have to study well for two years to find a stable job and live alone ( there would be no one to disturb me or tell me to stop following my dreams ).
@@makizenin1840 I totally get this. Right now im in a bit of a bind because all my time is going to work (minwage) and its hard to find the time for something that might not pay off for the next 2 years.
Being stuck inside all the time from the pandemic meant I had all kinds of noise from my partner when I'd want to record a video. Or having to give up my workspace because he needed an office to work.
I'm trying to juggle all the challenges but it's a lot.
@@njclawsart OMG I CAN FEEL THIS. I'm currently in my early 20s and I share my workspace with my mom. She has to work all day on her PC and I only get time to paint at night like after 8 pm and by that time I get so tired and sleepy because of my entrance preparation that I do in my living room ( gonna be honest but me and my family is quite struggling with financial issues but I hope it gets better as soon as possible ).
Tbh not everyone in life has the same opportunities or advantages to pursue their dreams at the moment. Someone have to wait longer than others in order to make a RUclips channel, becoming a content creator and so much more.
I hope that you get your own alone workspace and do whatever in life that works for you. And idk how much this will be helpful but "Atomic habits" is a great book for nonartist or artist people. It really helped me to improve my habits and focused on my daily task.

Thank you for sharing - when you got the point about “hoping to get 1000 followers, paying for ads, focusing on short form instagram and blog posts and it felt like nothing was helping” that hit hard, because that’s exactly the situation I’m in right now. I see so many people who have given up their careers to start something more creative and authentic, but that sometimes seems so far away from us. Really, there are these voices that pull us down a path that we don't want to follow, but end up going because we don't believe in ourselves. Thanks for sharing your process.

Thanks for all your help. I'm older and finally able to be in school for art. I especially liked your video on Style. I'm training in illustration. I have found that learning art takes a lot of brain power and I definitely had to lay aside other things.
Oh absolutely, learning art requires so much more active brainpower than studying almost any other subject because you have to build in that muscle memory and intuition. It can be really draining. So glad that my content has been able to help! I recently did a whole video on creating a study plan for myself as a self taught artist and will be making lots more videos in that vein, so stay tuned!

Hello I am new here I can relate to your experience and life path in so many ways! So many people close to me told me to not pursue art. It has been the hardest choice I made and getting started as an artist is not easy to do if you do not have the funding or support. I studied environmental science as my major in college and have not been able to get a job in the field I went to school for. Art has always been my passion and sticking with it has gotten me through so much! Thanks for sharing this and keep up the great work!
Sticky Art, I think you could connect your interest in environmental science with artwork, articles, etc and approach magazines, publishing houses ètc with your specialised work. One excellent illustrator called Roman Garcia Mora is actually a biologist. His images are so good precisely because of his training in biology. Don’t give up! Start small and build from there.

Honestly thank you so much for all these videos youve made about making it as an artist. I'm very much in the situation you were before. Down to starting out with a more fine arts background that I could not honestly keep with to sustain myself. Truly grateful that someone gave me the introduction to painting bc even now as I have moved onto digital, I still see the way it affects me. Im so thankful that you've just put theses ways an artist can survive in a way that my ADHD brain can follow and give me hope. I really felt that on and off relationship with Art. You absolutely love and is obsessed with it until suddenly all the “flaws” hit you in the face and you’re onto the next. But Art will forever occupy your mind despite what you do. You’ll start making excuses just to incorporate art into whatever you do. If you’re struggling with this, just go for Art and realize everything has its flaws. Might as well go for what you truly want and embrace it’s flaws rather than pursuing something you don’t and taking it it’s flaws
Gosh this makes me feel so less alone, failure after failure after failure. Also having starving artist ingrained but desperately wanting to do art in life maybe there is a space for me
Congrats on 2 years on RUclips! Your videos are helping so many of us to reach our goals or even better to simply _start_ working towards our dreams. I started my YT channel during covid to get out of the reality [I am a pharmacist and the day to day desperation I was facing and am facing up to this day was/is just unbearable] and to frankly speaking make myself do more art. It makes me relaxed and inspired and happy but I often feel anxious and sad because my art is nowhere where I want it to be and I fear 'what if it turnes out bad?'. But it all takes time, I know that! I just need to be less mean to myself. Thankfully I'm slowly adopting mindset of 'I'll just make another attempt'. Thank you again for your time and dedication you put into your videos they are truly amazing and inspirational. 💜

What a great video! Your story resonates so much with me, art is a healing activity. They tell us in school that critical art cannot be about personal healing, but James Brown said you've got to heal yourself before you can help other folks. JB was, in many ways, much smarter and wiser than my art instructors. I love your contemplative articulation and agree wholeheartedly that you are making the impact and change you hoped to achieve. This is so inspiring! I’ve been burnt out with instagram even though I have a lot of amazing followers and friends on there. It just seems pointless to post on there now but RUclips has been something I’ve been interested in since I was in middle school and I think I want to give it a try 😊

But in October I was hit by personal emotional exhaustion and I had to change myself fully, prioritize my kid than my art career or business studies. Dedicating my life to this has always terrified me since I was a kid. I've found joy making the most basic speedpaints before, but I wasn't consistent enough. Due to several issues I finally decided to stick to this path and make myself happy, however I'm still quite lost regarding how to start.

I resonate so much with everything you’re saying here, it’s making me feel not so alone. I grew up in Georgia and was used to people around me being very far-right, so I feel you there. My art career has recently been kicking off and I have a regular part time job which is great, but I’m worrying that I’m not spending enough time making art while all of these opportunities are coming up. I’m not going to quit yet, but it’s tough. Thanks for doing what you do and I’m so glad I found your channel 🙏 ❤️
I had similar experiences but it was with me getting really deep into the left to the point everything seemed to affect me somehow, I was afraid of writing characters that weren't ticking these or those boxes because the fear of rejection, of being called xist or yphobe was overwhelming. Overall I was an emotional wreck and it took a lot of time and the company of good friends to get back on track and separate people from the labels.
Art has been such a joy now that I don't care whether I draw enough non-white characters or not, who cares? I do this out of passion, not to please people who wouldn't be pleased either way. Cancel culture is scary, but once you stop caring about it, it kinda loses the ability to do any serious harm if you're prepared enough.

If you don't feel like drawing non-white characters then don't.
It's pretty similar in my case. I mostly like to draw east Asian and south asians young women's but a lot of people have accused me for not drawing enough white and black characters. I don't do it intentionally but since I'm Asian so I simply feel more connected to Asian people.
The only one thing I would love to point out is that "Drawing different types of people can improve your art skills" which is something I wanna do as well but my comfort zone is not letting me to leave lol
I appreciated the trying to get 1% better with each video. I'm trying to do that with each of my art videos too! My Mural Mondays art definitely ones that will be rough because I'm still learning how to film painting large videos. I'm still going to post them though! Once summertime rolls around and my art shed is done I'm excited to try out different filming techniques for the intros. Finally showing my face in the beginning of the art videos to talk briefly about the piece before showing the painting timelapse. I'm really excited for it! I'll be signing and talking so the Deaf community can also have access to what I'm saying. I think that'll make it a little bit more interesting and unique too. I don't know many artists who are fluent in ASL on top of creating artwork. I'm really excited to share artwork of really obscure animals as well to raise awareness for them! 😊
