  • In today's video in beautiful Laos, we take a two-day river cruise down the Mekong River and arrive in one of our favorite towns, Luang Prabang.
Laos is a beautiful country located in Southeast Asia, known for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. Here are some reasons why we love Laos:
Natural beauty: Laos is home to breathtaking natural landscapes, including lush mountains, cascading waterfalls, serene rivers, and scenic rice fields. Places like Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, and the Bolaven Plateau offer stunning views and opportunities for outdoor activities.
Cultural heritage: Laos has a unique and vibrant culture deeply influenced by Buddhism. The country is dotted with ornate Buddhist temples, and the daily ritual of giving alms to monks is a sight to behold. Traditional festivals, such as Boun Pi Mai (Lao New Year) and Boun Ok Phansa (end of Buddhist Lent), showcase the country's rich traditions.
Slow-paced lifestyle: Laos is often described as a laid-back and relaxed destination. The slow-paced lifestyle allows visitors to unwind and immerse themselves in the tranquility of the surroundings. The locals are known for their friendliness and welcoming nature, adding to the overall charm of the country.
Adventure and outdoor activities: Laos offers a range of adventurous activities for those seeking excitement. Trekking through remote villages, kayaking along the Mekong River, exploring limestone caves, and zip-lining through dense forests are just a few examples of the thrilling experiences available.
Culinary delights: Lao cuisine is diverse and flavorful, with influences from neighboring countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and China. From delicious noodle soups like khao soi to spicy papaya salads (tam mak hoong) and sticky rice (khao niao), Lao food offers a unique culinary experience.

▶️ We started our channel to inspire and share our world travel lifestyle, adventures, and optimistic outlook on life with others. After completing a two-year journey in our Airstream to see all 50 states and 51 National Parks, we left to travel abroad. We have downsized our possessions and sold our home so that we can wander about with only the things in our backpacks.
We love living on the road, traveling each week to a new location. We plan to travel extensively to every part of the world. Ours is not a slow travel lifestyle but rather a vagabondish one. The goal is not to check a country off a list, but to experience it by meeting new people, seeing how others live, and making new friends. We believe in laughing, loving, and living our lives to the fullest.
We are working hard to build a beautiful website where you can get travel information about the places we have been. In addition, we post blog articles to help you travel better. Our channel is a way of augmenting that effort, so sometimes we post videos about how to travel or a vlog showing our lives on the road as we do an activity or an adventure. We also post Shorts, so check those out, too. We hope to entertain you, but most importantly, we want to inspire you and give you the confidence to plan your own adventure around the world.
We invite you to subscribe and comment. We also hope you follow the link to our website and sign up for our newsletter. It's a great way to keep up-to-date with our travels. ◀️

I can’t believe I missed this video when it was released. But I found it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Northern Thailand and Laos are on my list. Have the north and central areas of Vietnam coming up next. Thank you for the info on the river tour company. Looked like they transported you to overnight hotel and your Luang Prabang hotel. I’m not as spry as I use to be. So, that’s a plus for me.

Absolutely loved this tour, took it upstream from Luang Prabang and we only had 8 passengers as well. Well worth the cost to take this boat if you can afford it, much better than the public boat. Took he cheap hotel in Pak Bank and wish we had spent the few extra dollars for the upgrade.

I'm so happy to find your videos! As I'm anxiously looking forward to retirement and trying to do more traveling, I've been watching videos and really felt a need for content more geared to my age instead of 20 something nomads. I am starting to plan a 2 week trip to the area for our 60th birthday in 2025 (not sure if I'll be retired by then) and will definitely be watching more of your videos. I was thinking of doing a Viking or Ama Waterway Cruise with an extension but maybe you'll inspire me to put something together myself (having never traveled to this area I was not confident that I could with the different languages...)

At the risk of sounding like a stalker, I have fallen in love with the two of you! As a fellow devotee of seeing the world, I share your belief that life is not about the accumulation of "stuff" but rather the accumulation of experiences, connections, and relationships built. I have had the incredible good fortune of being able to travel the world with my mom over the last 20 years( i get six weeks of vacation) and we are up to 60 countries! I have 22 months left before i am going to retire. My plan is to spend 50% of my time travelling the world but will always have NYC to call home.
Laos is on my list as i missed it on my trip to Southeast Asia. Your rapport and sense of humor is so engaging to watch and you both seem so genuine and warm. Once retired, my new goal is to find you and take you out to dinner in some exotic location for all the enjoyment your videos have provided.
    Much appreciated!

We were in Chiang Mai the end of Feb. We know what you mean about air quality. It was so bad while we were there we could not even see the mountains all around us. One day it cleared out we couldn't believe how the mountains were just right next to us as they were hidden by the bad air Their air quality is absolutely an issue that needs to be addressed. Also Bangkok was bad too 😑

Yeah, we were there the same time, and the stinging eyes and throat, headache, & coughing, just really not good. People living there year-round with lots of outdoor exposure suffer serious health effects--it's astounding how many millions of people have this as a reality. We ended up leaving a bit earlier than planned and going to a national park in the south instead. Loved Chiang Mai pre-smoke though!

@@RetirementTravelersdo you think it is necessary to get rabies vaccine or malaria pills to go to Laos. I hear mix reviews. We just booked a cruise for Feb.

How do you keep your equipment safe on these types of excursions? My husband would be not happy leaving it on a boat while we were on an excursion. Lugging it around doesn't seem fun either. Any tips?

We felt safe leaving our stuff on the Shompoo cruise. They had their employees stay on the boat while we did the short excursions.
      Happy journeys,

We use a no fee Capitol One no fee card and use a local ATM for cash. We try to manage the amount so we don't have too much left over. If we do, we sometimes are forced to buy chocolate at the airport. ❤️🤣
