I have been to Europe in the military and It was a wonderful place. But thank you for also reminding us how beautiful Asia is in places like Vietnam, Cambodia And Thailand going there can be a once in a lifetime experience! At 6:27 mark seeing the local markets and the handi crafts. So many wonderful items that people create without any use of machinery. The immense attention to detail is very apparent. Also I would love to visit many of the wonderful meat and vegetable markets. When you buy a fresh chicken here, the chicken is looking at you while your paying the store keeper . Great video 3 thumbs up!

Weather? Mosquitoes? Healthcare? When I used to boat in mosquito county, I anchored out in the river or bay in I could to get away from them.

how much would the final cost be between river, ocean, bus tour, and independent train packages, rental car ....? are there chances to do your own thing on river cruising given the destinations are closer to ports whereas ocean cruises you are pretty much forced to pay for excursion or stay onboard given that most if not quite all destinations are two three hours away from port one way, at least in europe.

I went to Vietnam and Cambodia cruise this year which included a few days stays at Fusion Suites Saigon before the Mekong River cruise onboard the RV La Marguerite. But I only got to see Vietnam part after the Cambodia part got cancelled due to the virus causing people on Mekong River cruises to return home early.
Vietnam has a lot of motorbikes on the road and also more motorbikes than cars on the road though the motorbikes don't always stop so it is scary for travellers crossing the road. A majority of the people were wearing facemasks for protection against the virus
I did get to enjoy a ricksaw bike ride excursion while on the Mekong River (though we had to wear facemasks before we could land for the excursion) and excursions were done via tender boats where you had to wear a lifejacket.
The RV La Marguerite ship has no lifts so the only way wheelchair bound passangers can get upstairs and downstairs would be with crutchs.

You mentioned that tours are structured, that most passengers will be doing the same thing. Is it possible to just tour on your own (as long as you get back to the ship on time)??

This would be a big issue as most of the time on Mekong requires climbing into boats that pull up to the boat moored in the river. We had someone who had the same and skipped those trips. In Europe it is more varied and some lines can help (like Viking) but in my view if you do want to sightsee river cruising is not the best option as the ships can dock side by side, banks can be steep. So, important to talk to the line to double check the ship has the right facilities (like lift between the floors as not all do) and the ports calling on and what the tours are (if all walking tours they will usually have a “gentle option” which they adapt based on mobility constraints and needs.

Very good and informative video. We are booked for 2025……Is the reason to moor overnight in middle of Mekong River for safety? How safe do passengers feel?

Hey Gary! My wife and I were just about to go on our first River Cruise (Uniworld from Amsterdam to Basel) but it got cancelled. We're trying to figure out when we should rebook but it's so hard to know how far out in the future is "far enough." Any thoughts?

Where are you based? A lot will depend on travel advisories by different governments and when airlines, those that survive it increasingly sounds like, are allowed to start flying again. I believe Europe will stay very locked down into at least June. Of course, lines and airlines offering very flexible booking terms so you could be more bullish. If you want certainty I think you should look to into the July to September period

Nice work. But perhaps in this situation instead of "is, are" more proper would be using "was, were".
