Great video Chris. Just bought myself a 1987 K100 and I have your video on all the time when I am working on the bike. Thank you and hope you can do more videos on the K bikes.
FYI for the rest of you guys looking to rebuild our spline. Bruno is not working until the end of the year.

Thanks a ton for these videos, Chris. They've been my Bible over the weekend doing the spline lube on my 85 K100RS. Whoever did the process last on my bike last must have been a student of Max, because I am running in to so much goddamn blue threadlocker. If you ever find that mechanic, be sure to fill his nostrils a little extra for me.

i have recently bought a k1100lt and I have been stichted up with all electrical fancy stuff...Went to bmw dealership for service they are asking more than i actually paid for the bike...much more. So decided to do everything myself. Your videos...deffo a lot of help!

Nice vids - thanks for taking the time and effort to show full procedure. Just about to do 1st clutch spline lube ( since I owned it). Drive splines already done twice but figured its time for clutch to get in on the loving. Only got minimal tools, tiny garage space and no mates who can be arsed to give me a hand with the job but hey...screw it.. what's the worst that can happen.
    cheers Ben

Chris Harris - Many thanks for these videos - I have never worked on a K bike before and without your videos I would not have had the knowledge (or courage) to complete the spline lube. I did remove the alternator and found the monkey nuts had been eaten! All finished now and back in working order. By the way the job did required several six packs and quite a lot of swearing in English and French. Thanks.

Some own for the prestige of roundel membership. Some for the perceived reliability. Some for the cutting edge technology. Some for memories of better days. My KLR requires a fraction of the maintenance that a BMW requires and my FJR1300 was fairly maintenance-free with a lot more smile induced by the right twist grip. I am sure that I will end up with another 1992 KRS though if for no other reason than I am most comfortable on these as I have over 170,000 miles on one years ago :) Chris

Thanks Chris, Job done now. The real bitch was getting the headers and studs off...wouldn't shift for love nor money and PB Blaster ( 'Plusgas' as we have here in UK) or Map torching/double nuts/vice grips etc. Eventually bought some 'Turbosockets' which did the trick in seconds - another great US invention and now I'm looking for excuses to use them everywhere because they're so effective. Your vids were next to me on the laptop all the way - big help, thanks again. Cheers from UK!

You can rebuild the old pump. However, with the labor to remove, rebuild and re-install the pump it is not financially wise to pay a shop to do that. Perfectly fine if you can do it yourself. EBC brake discs are great. No complaints and they are of better quality than OEM BMW brake discs especially the floating discs. Good luck and thank you for your comment & questions, Chris

I think $450 for the re-splined shaft and a new universal joint. The pinion splines on the rear drive are more ($750?). I think the last one that I did was $1200 for round-trip shipping, rebuilt pinion spline (and rebuilt rear drive) and a re-splined driveshaft with new u-joint. Your KRT looks great!

When you use copper anti-seize on a bolt, do you reduce the tightening torque? Or do you still tighten to the same recommended torque? Thank you.

As a crappy question on the side - is it normal to get a slight grinding sound when pulling off at slower revs? I've rebuilt/renewed the timing chain, new alternator and rubbers...some people say this is normal...but I've never ridden another K100 to know. Its always been there and I ain't worrying really. Cheers mate

Hello Chris, bought a 97 K1100RS in Feb 15, hated it, fell off it within a fortnight, was going to sell it straight on. Seem to have had it ever since, done 20K miles on it, just going round and round London on the M25. Chucking it around like a BMX now. Anyway - as it looks like I appear to be keeping it - I want to do a spline lube. I think you said at the beginning of this that the 16v models are different - I can't see another video for the 16v models - is there one? Would be most grateful for any advice. Your videos are very, very good, as others have said.

Hi Chris I have an 85 k100 rt and am trying to get in touch with Brunos. Are they still in business and if so do you have any contact info better than what is on their website? BTW LOVE your vids Please keep on being the guy you are! I have more fun checking out your posts

Thanks for the reply Chris. I guess I'll just keep on knocking at Brunos door. Any idea cost range for a spline drive shaft retrofit from Bruno? Also, my bike is a youtube BMW k100 Restored ( the bike is blue). You might get a kick out of my DIY windshield.

Hi Chris, I have a 4v K100RS from 91 and need to do a spline lube - how different is it? Can I use this video as a good starting point at least? My final drive is paralever not monolever but what else should I be especially careful of?

OK, probably a silly question, but here we go: I just purchased a motorcycle lift so I can do the spline lube job on my 1990 K75RT. In all your videos the bikes are on the lift, with the front wheel in the vise AND already on the center stand. How do you do this? If I put my front tire in my lift's wheel chock, I can't pull the bike back in order to put it on its center stand. What's the trick? Thanks!

    • @ChrisR.Harris
      @ChrisR.Harris  8 лет назад +1

+kevmacmills Hi Kevin, I place the bike on the centerstand and then drag the bike forward into the vice. Connect the centerstand crossbar to the front wheel with a tie-down strap and have a friend assisting until you get used to how things feel. Happy 2016!

Bruno does not answer his phone (neither do I for that matter). He's a one-man shop and buried with work. Send him an e-mail and he will get back to you as soon as possible. If you are in a rush you are probably screwed. He's usually got quite a backlog of work. Thanks, Chris
