Thing is a PITA to install but this video helped alot thanks.
One note: it helped to loosen the actual hood latch and move it over just a c-hair to the right. That provided clearance and allowed the latch to clear the Tuffy assembly and the hood to close.

I just finished installing this. It was a giant PITA. I had a clearance issue due to a trans cooler mounter below the hood latch in front of the radiator. The hood latch kept getting stuck and I had a hell of a time getting it out to adjust it several times. Then I had problems getting the key all the way in and out of the lock. The top of the grill opening was a hair too low and the key would get stuck. It frustrated the hell out of me and I bet my neighbors think I'm nuts for all the cursing and shouting I did at it. Really lost it.
    But it's done now, thanks.

I have an '02 TJ. After having a nice AGM battery stolen, and of course they cut the battery cables rather than unbolt them, I shopped for hood locks. I bought this same Tuffy hood lock. So far, it's been a pain in the ass to install. The factory hood latch isn't adjustable, and mine consistently strikes slightly to the passenger side of the striker plastic. This presents a problem, because that is the side the Tuffy lock cylinder is on. I can barely get the lock to install with clearance from the latch, but when I do that the key can't be taken out in the unlocked position. I believe that a superior design would have been to not use a slot for the retaining bolt, but a simple hole resulting in a more solid and reliable mount, and then locate the lock cylinder BELOW the latch, instead of to the side. This would eliminated the clearance and adjustment problems. The lock also could then be centered in the grill slot.

Thanks for the tip , I've got to do the same on my CJ5 when I get it on the road soon . I'm personally alright with a jeep in your videos , especially since I love the TJ model . Yours is immaculate . Lots of luck with it , just know your daughter will love it . Your a great dad to do all this for her . Doing your best to make sure she will be safe in her jeep and it will be reliable too . All your chevelle videos are excellent , especially the tech . Very in depth . That's so important . Better than a manual . . Thanks 👍

I just did the Tuffy hood lock for my YJ. What a far superior product to the Tuffy TJ hood lock.

For anyone watching, don't do what I did and do a 1st attempt install with the lock positioned all the way to the right (from your perspective looking at it), this was on a 2001 btw. What happens is the hook may fall and slide down into place, but when trying to get it open (even when the tuffy lock is in open position) the hook was jammed up and not able to move forward to clear the grill. bruised up my hands trying to slip a socket under and wrench in the small space available to try and get it loose enough to push over to free up the latch.
I did find that this would be a way to defeat the lock for someone with the time and patience to do it, they'd just need the same tools you used to install it, but at least it's a real pain in the ass to do and will at least prevent opportunistic thieves passing by. But folks with a 7/16" wrench and socket, and some time and patience, can in theory get by this lock.
