This is absolutely the best how-to video I have seen. It was clearly done and explained very well. The video was clear, sharp, and excellent quality. I had no trouble making this repair on my Jeep thanks to you! I saved an estimated labor charge of at least $200 and saved money on buying my own parts. I didn't have to pay for towing my vehicle to the shop either. Thank you so very much!
Details in the video perfectly matched setup on my 2006 TJ with manual transmission. Even my part broke in the same exact way and place as in the video. The only glitch was in dealing with a defective replacement part. The brass clip would not stay in place as shown in video. Drove me nuts until I replaced the new clip with the old then everything was fine. Would only add that you probably won't need to disconnect the switch from the wiring in order to replace the actuator pin.
Same here. I ended up replacing the cast piece from the new (crappy) one into the body of the better quality old one and works beautifully. The video helped me enormously- I had my iPad in the car while I fiddled with it. 2006 Manual TJ like yours.
Thanks for the video! My '04 LJ quit me yesterday - luckily in the driveway while I was trying to head out. I did some searching last night on a TJ Forum, to narrow the diagnosis. I then searched RUclips and found your video. Went to AutoZone and Harbor Freight and back home for a quick install. The tip about the security torx saved me a second trip for supplies. Thanks again.
As someone who knows NOTHING about vehicles, this helped me out so much. Thank you for explaining everything clearly. I bought a 2003 TJ as a fixer upper, and now I can fix er without my husband's help!
Absolutely, the best walk-through for this project. I let my jeep sit for 6 months dreading a shop visit. I'm so not a mechanical inclined mind-set but I followed this on a hunch of being the problem. Fixed in 30 mins. New follower here! Nice work!!
Just found myself stranded in Rincon PR with my beater 2005 Liberty.. was able to get a ride to autozone to buy tools and a new ignition switch actuator pin. You saved my life with this video. I was able to get it all done the next morning to journey back 3 hours to San Juan. Thank you so much!
THANKS! Our Jeep stopped starting the first day of vacation last week. We pulled it home, researched your videos, and bought the actuator pin and ignition switch today. As soon as we pulled out the actuator pin, it looked exactly like yours - broken in the exact same place. Put it all back together and started like a champ! You saved us a tow to our mechanic and hundreds of dollars. Can’t thank you enough…
THANK YOU! This really is the best instructional video EVAR. New (old, 1997 handmedown) Wrangler owner mama - handed down from my Dad, never worked on a car in my life. Wouldn’t start two days after I got it, followed these instructions and she’s running! Thank you!
Thank you so much! This happened to my 04' Rubi today. I went through all the forums and nothing matched. came across your video. Pulled the switch off and bam! Broken! 40$ later and ole Artemis is running like a champ! Thanks so much for the amazing step by step video! Saved my night!
I fixed my Jeep myself and got it to start again using this video as a guide, less than $100 for the part and probably $100's saved in labor. Thanks a bunch!!
Other than a few minor issues and improvising a bit I can say that this is truly the best video for this issue. When I pulled the actuator pin I had the same issue. Thank you so very much for this video. It was a huge help.
Thank you a million times CPO. I realize this vids old but was just able to fix the wife's 2002 TJ, same exact break as yours looked identical. Replaced both and now she's up and running. Of course not before a new battery, starter. Alternator and every battery / alt / ground cables then I stumbled onto your video. Oh well its all new now, less to worry about, thanks again !!!
Tackled this project this morning as I really had doubts I could do this. Was pleasantly surprised to see my busted piece when I took it apart, but knew I wasn’t going to jump for joy until completely done. Much to my surprise, it all went back together thanks to this tremendous video. Thank you. Car has sat for 3 weeks as I piecemealed the parts online I guessed I would need. Guessed correctly. It’s a great day.
Like others, this video helped me immensely. I followed your directions to the T, and it went smooth as butter. I wasn't going to replace the ignition switch but I went ahead and got a new one based on your advice. It was the right move because after I got it pulled out, I noticed it was wallowed out were a broken piece had been moving around in it for a while. Thanks a million. This is one of the better automotive tutorial videos I've found and I've been through hundreds of them.
This was SO. Helpful. Thank you! Ended up here from the "Troubleshooting Jeep TJ Wrangler". Rewired to check the starter--wasn't it, lo and behold it was the actuator with the same break as yours! Got the parts, watched the video, did the repair---you're a life saver. Thank you!
For sure the best video on this topic. Couldn't have explained every detail any better thank you for helping us who would be lost without this video and I think it's crazy how common this issue is
This video was EXACTLY what happened to my 06 LJ this week. When I pulled out the assembly from the ignition the same little piece of metal fell right out! Got the Dorman replacement and all is well. Thanks for the detailed video and Dorman part number.
I have been fighting an issue for 3 years where my 04 LJ would shut off while I was driving. I had lights and gauges just wouldn’t crank. Took it to multiple shops and because it was intermittent they didn’t know what was up. Did some research saw this video. All fixed now. Thank you so much. Great video!
I just wanted to leave a quick comment for the algorithm. I am mechanically inclined and didn't find this too hard. Although I see other people who don't have experience also having an easy time with the part install. Honestly, it was a very clear and easy to understand tutorial, and I was able to save myself hundreds of dollars after I was not able to figure out why my vehicle would not start. I wished I saw this video before I went out and bought a brand new starter, but hey, can't complain about new parts! This helped me a lot and was easy to follow along with so I could repair my jeep while I was out on vacation. Thank you!
Man you are a lifesaver!!! My sons Jeep broke down at school so I drove down to help him fix. I also had a bad starter to fix in addition to this starter pin just like yours! Also replaced the switch. Thank you Thank you Thank you!! Thanks for taking the time to do this video. You saved me big bucks!!
A most excellent clear and concise video, without it I would still be inventing curse words because the instructions that came with it were not good at all. Thank you big time
YOU’VE DONE IT TOO ME AGAIN. THANK YOU!! Got home from work and my car wouldn’t turn off lol. Key turn had almost no resistance. Same break on my actuator too. Fixed it the next day. 2001 Jeep Wrangler sport 4.0 You’re a godsend, man.
Just changed mine out today. As soon as I got the actuator out, I saw it was, in fact, broken in the exact spot as yours. Engineered to fail. Thank you so much for saving me the time and money trying to figure out why it wasn't starting.
Thank you champion, you saved me so much time and money today - when my TJ died I had it towed to my house instead of a mechanic, I found exactly the same problem and my parts are already on their way 😍
You could’ve just turn the key to the run position and popped the clutch to get it started. You also can short the relay for the starter and it will turn over the engine too. You also can install a momentary switch on your dash where aux accessories go and run a wire over to the relay for the starter. Lots of options to bypass the ignition switch.
You are A LIFE SAVER!!! Thank you for perfectly done video. The hardest part of the whole process was trying to find my tools my hubby misplaced. Lol. You made this repair super easy and fun! Thank you so much!
This is exactly what happened to my 2003 TJ sport. Exactly! That piece of metal fell off the switch just like in the video. I was distracted looking for a faulty grounding wire and then when I came across this video, "BOOM," found the fix. Great job and thanks!
I looked up TJ no fire because I knew it wasnt the battery. Saw your vid and knew it would probably be the most professional video out there based on your previous vids from you. Saved me a lot of search time on the internet.
I watched it a few weeks back, thought I recalled it all, got the parts off ok but was confused on replacement, his anticipation of that very thing is so useful. Many thanks, I rewatched the re install a few times. Jeep is 100% now. (where it used to be "maybe I'll start...maybe I won't")
Thank you so much. After watching your video, it only took about 5 minutes to pull apart. Sure enough, the actuator pin was broken. I can’t believe they charge $60. For that tiny plastic and pot metal piece. Took me almost 2 hours of fiddling to get the new part in and everything connected properly. Cranked right over! Thanks!
This is an outstanding video…thank you! My 05 Wrangler had the exact same problem as yours in the video and it happened in a parking lot. I tore the ignition apart (in the parking lot), found the broken actuator, and couldn’t get it back together until I found your video! Thank you, very well done!
Thanks a million😊 I wasted the interlock trying to troubleshoot the ignition. The part was on sale for $14 delivered. The detailed explanation was very much appreciated. Not as simple as it looks.
This is indeed the best video on this!!! After a year and several mechanics working on my daughter’s TJ, I was changing the turn signal multifunction switch and found the broken actuator!! I’m pretty good with fixing stuff and this was invaluable!!! Especially how to line it all up and positioning the new switch! I didn’t think about that and my new actuator pin didn’t have alignment marks. Your video saved me endless headache!!! Thank you!!!
This video is AMAZING!! I am a fair weather mechanic (dad) and had trouble shot several things before this (which did not work) THIS WAS THE PROBLEM, and gave me the confidence to do it on my own. THANK YOU AGAIN!!! We are back up and running, and all because this video..
Ok first off great video. My jeep was exhibiting exact symptoms. Pulled off the covers and the little metal piece fell right out confirming starter problem. I could not have done it without your video. Great Job. Thank you. Should have it running shortly. YES !! Makes me look like I know what I'm doing. ha
Thank you for the video!! My Jeep finally will start!!! Weeks leading up to it not starting my 2003 Jeep Wrangler would occasionally cut out while I was driving causing it to jerk and jump a little. It made a clicking sound when I turned and wouldn’t start the first try, then worked the second turn of the key for a week. Finally, It stopped making a clicking sound and lights on the radio light flickered when it wouldn’t start. I tried replacing the starter, checked the battery and replaced the clutch position sensor after reading post online. I saw your video and ordered a 20 dollar starter switch off of amazon and it fixed the problem! It starts right up and runs better than ever!! Thanks again for the explanation of how everything works. I had to get a screw driver and turn the sensor for everything to line up.
I'm doing the same job along with the signal and flasher (everything switch). By far THE BEST VIDEO on replacing the pin and ignition. I still cant figure out why my signals work but not my hazards. That will be the next job for me. Thanks very much for this video. 2000 Jeep TJ Sport 4L
Thank you sooooooooo much man. I have an 05 liberty and the shops were talking crazy numbers to fix it. I found the actuator pin for 21 bucks on Amazon and your video and did it myself. Lifesaver bro!
I really appreciate you doing this video. Got my sons 05’ Jeep Liberty back running. I attempted to watch several videos before finding yours. Your video was the only one I could see and you provided step by step instruction. Thank you for a great video and saving me $600. Awesome job man!
Bruh...just had this happen to me today. Started up the TJ and stopped at the gas station 2 miles from my house. Filled up the tank and tried to start it. I had all the same symptoms. Got a ride from a buddy and went to Autozone to get both of those parts. Pulled out the actuator and it wasn't broken. Replaced it anyway since I had it removed. Replaced the ignition switch too, which was probably the culprit. Buttoned everything back up and it cranked right up. Thanks for the great video. ✌
Thank you so so very much You just saved me and my wife like three four hundred bucks having somebody else freaking do this and this was the exact right fix for the 2004 Jeep Liberty limited so thank you so much I'm so appreciative
I watched a few videos on this. When I had trouble putting it back together I turned to your video. My Jeep won't crank and won't move the shifter. I found out that there was noting broken on mine and put it back together with your help. The center piece gave me a lot of trouble until you told me how to realign it. Thanks. This didn't fix mine, but now I can eliminate the ignition switch area. It's probably and easy fix, I just haven't found it yet.
My tj was stolen around my birthday this year (parked by my workplace and didn't notice until Sept 28th, bday on th 25th) I did some things to "disable" it somewhat. To and from work I drive the back road to actively search for it. Finally one day to work in the morning I drove on the same back street I had already drive by before. This time as I looked left the colors red, white and blue caught my eyes. There it was! Stars and Bars!!! My Jeep has a soft top but I left the rear soft windows off and instead I secured the American flag to the sports bars. Skipping to the point of this video. Now the key turns to accessory and all dash light work and all however it won't crank over and start. I talked to people and it seems that it has same issue as yours. The same broken piece is most likely th culprit. Thank you for the upload.
June 2021 and this video walked me through the exact issue I have. Broken actuator pin and I bought new one and ignition switch as well for my 2004 LJ. I’m also replacing the key cylinder as well since my key can be removed while running. Lol. Thanks for this. Worked great!!!
What a great and helpful video. My actuator looked exactly the same (busted like yours). You provided all the necessary steps. I am now back in business! Also returned the new starter I didn't need...
This is the best how to video I've seen after watching videos for two days!! You explain everything in detail. Thank you so much! Keep up the awesome work!!
Just replaced mine on my '05 TJ using these excellent instructions. Mine was broken in the cast area just like yours. The only thing you didn't mention was the fact that it would take me about 5 times as long to do mine than it took you. First delay was because after getting home with the parts I wondered why there was 2 sets of instructions in the box with the actuator pin assembly then finding that the key lock end of the plastic pin was already broken off. Another trip across town remedied that. Second delay was finding the small spring that shot off of the brass colored slider when it worked its way out of the slot. I'm glad I google the ignition issue when the key felt loose and found this video before I had to be towed. Thanks so much for making it. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much I was freaking out my baby 06 tj was stranded in a parking lot on the otherside of town for $100 this video saved me. and yes mine was the same break too
Two words for you ma man, "PERFECTLY OUTSTANDING!!!" Loved your video, I think that is my problem. Main thing for me is to turn the key and it should spring back once you turn it forward. Gonna check that first thing in the morning. Thank you CPO!
Wow I Believe that all the videos I’ve ever watched in my entire life on RUclips and all the videos that I’ve watched in the last two days trying to fix my jeep and finding a video that shows me what to do and how to do it I stumbled up on yours and wow sir my hats off to you this is absolutely one of the best video I’ve ever seen in my life and after watching this video I went out to my truck and I had my truck fixed in 15 minutes kudos brother kudos
super helpful video. i wish all videos on here were made by this guy. super detailed on everything. thanks so much. my jeep is on the road again and only cost me $28.
I had the same problem. broken tumbler/actuator. Thank you for your video. Saved me some aggravation and time. Mine is an 02 Wrangler. now to track down an engine code. Thanks again.
Had an intermittent airbag light issue, if I wiggled the key around when the jeep was running I could sometimes get it to turn off... so I thought replacing the entire ignition system might fix it. As an aside, I could just pull my key out of the jeep at any point and infact, probably could have started it with a hot dog. Anyhow, following these instructions I fixed both of these problems. Taking my time still probably not an hour worth of work. Just want to say thanks again for putting this out, it was extremely helpful.
I was stuck on the side of the road an hour and a half from my home and this video (and Autozone) got me home. Thank you for your detailed instructions and explanation
I'm having a problem with my gauges not working intermittently. I've narrowed it down to my ignition switch. This video is going to be so, so helpful for changing it out. I would have never thought I would have needed security torx bits to do this job. Thank you so much for posting this video.
Great instructions, originally I replaced the actuator pin. I recommend replacing both actuator pin and switch. In case the switch is broken as I later found out. Now working as new.
X2. My actuator wasn’t sheared off/broken. So it was good I had the ignition switch. I re-used the original actuator and returned the new one. I understand a lot better (quicker) how to get in and replace, if needed.
Outstanding video! I would never have found the problem, much less had a clue what to do. Taking the time to go thru the alignment was a huge help getting things back together. I can't thank you enough!
Great!! Made it so much easier, I would add that his advice to replace the ignition switch as well is a step that SHOULD be taken, in my case the switch was bad AND the actuator was bad, I didn’t take the advice and got the switch after I discovered it still wouldn’t start. Spend the extra $20 and you wont have that moment of panic as I did when it didn’t start yet again. Great instructional video.
Thank you o3djeeps! Your video probably saved me $150 and hours of aggravation. I applied what I learned from this informative video to my 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I'm up and running and couldn't be happier.
Firstly great video but I wanted to share in case this repair doesn't fix their problem. I had this issue and everything looked like the ignition actuator and or the switch. Turns out it was the connection on the starter solenoid. The terminal on the solenoid where the harness snaps in was loose and broke off as I checked it. Replaced the starter and no trouble. Starter was like $105 and had it the next day so why not. Hope this helps
Really appreciate the detailed info in this video. I could not find what I was doing wrong until your video. Your explained what each part does and how they work together. It helped me complete the job with ease. Wish I would have seen this 2 days ago.
Great video! I'm having this same problem with my '04 Rubicon and have parts on the way. The actuator is less than $11 and the switch is less than $17 on eBay. I called my local garage just for fun, to get an estimate for replacement and they said $470! What the hell? RUclips is the best car manual ever!..... subscribed!
Great Video! I was able to replace the ignition actuator by myself. My 2001 Jeep Sahara started right up after I put everything back together. I could not have done this repair without your video. You saved me time, money and effort. Thank you!
Big thanks! mine was Ignition switch but after watching this I replaced it all too. I replaced the starter and did all my grounds first (worth doing anyway) but this was a great video!!!!!
im gona attempt to do this later today, my actuator broke, i did process of elimination, tried the cylinder first then did the ignition switch and found out the pin broke into the switch!!! so this video definitely helps a ton, im gona attempt to replace here later.. Thank you for this video
LOL. Great video. You didn’t think I wanted to hear someone talk for hours. You simply went thru what I needed to do. Thank you. It wasn’t as simple for me as it was for you. But that’s me. It never works how it’s supposed to. I mean, I had to do what you did. In the order you did it. But it took me 3 hrs to get it to come together. Ignition cylinder would only slide half way out. Took me a long time to line up the ignition cylinder with the actuator and lock back in to place. Took me a while to line up the starter with the actuator. All the in between steps took me a while to make them work. But it all eventually went the way you said it would. But that didn’t solve my problem. 🤯🤯🤯 I turn the key in the morning for the first time. Have to hold it on for 20-30 seconds and it finally starts. Starts fine unless it sits all day. Then same thing. I checked the wiring under dash. Not melted, etc. I replaced the starter relay. Starter and solenoid are new. 🤔🤔🤔
I’m a rank amateur when it comes to mechanical aptitude. This video, with your step by step, clear/ concise, chronological guidance help me rock this cylinder, actuator, and switch replacement. Gracias!
I know this is old but thank you so much for this video. 2002 wrangler sport wouldn’t start at a wawa. I knew it was this issue when I did some research. Completed the install in the wawa parking lot following your video
Just wanted to say thank you for this video and also the troubleshooting one. I went through the steps you posted to diagnose the issue on my ‘02 TJ and had this exact problem. Your attention to detail on all the little things regarding this fix, gave me the confidence to do it myself. Saved me a ton of money and the Jeep starts up great now. Thank you so much!
Your amazing!! Thanks for your detailed yet careful chosen words that I am very fascinated to fix my jeep after 5 long months of he'll and not knowing!!!! I'm keeping u in my favs for sure!!!
Thank you very much for this video! They wanted $62 for the ignition switch at the dealership and the labor would have been way more than that. I ordered it for $10 and an ignition actuator for about $15 and I'll put them in myself. Best of luck to you out there!
Thank you very much for taking the time to do these videos to help us old fart Jeep owners fix them. This video was extremely informative and helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us sir
Ahhhh so helpful! My actuator pin had literally the EXACT same metal piece break off in the exact same shape and spot. Too bad it took me a battery and starter to figure out it was the pin. Thank you!
This is absolutely the best how-to video I have seen. It was clearly done and explained very well. The video was clear, sharp, and excellent quality. Spot on and ditto; I don’t turn a wrench but due to the video tutorial I accomplished the same and I would estimate labor 400-600 in California.
I agree. Follow the steps exactly and you will be fine.
Details in the video perfectly matched setup on my 2006 TJ with manual transmission. Even my part broke in the same exact way and place as in the video. MAAAAN, when I tell you this video help me out big time yesterday. Like everyone else, I appreciate you taking the time out to do this vid.

Easy video to follow.

I can not even tell you how much you saved the day with this video. Thank you!
My son bought a new actuator pin for his jeep, no instructions of course. Thanks for saving the day!
Gonna tackle this tomorrow.
Man, you are a lufe saver! Doing this swap in a laundromat parking lot wasn't too bad. It still wasn't fun. Thank you!
100% was the issue with my 05 LJ. You are a life saver and your video is so easy to follow. Thank you!
THANK YOU!!! My middle ignition piece with the tiny golden thing blew apart and I had no idea how it went back together until I watched this
Thank you so much I tried 3 hrs before I saw this video. After that took me 20 minutes thanks for explaining everything single part
Was absolutely stumped until I came across these videos. Thank you so much.
Amazing video. So clear on a topic that could become very frustrating if you hadn’t seen the explanation of how it all works together. Awesome job.
Don’t usually leave comments but THANK YOU. Did not see the arrows when lining it all up. Great Video
Thank you sir! Learned so much about fixing my own car using your video was so proud to not need my dads help
You are a great RUclips Instructor. Very thorough and easy to follow. Now for tomorrow's project!
Outstanding video! I would never have found the problem, much less had a clue what to do. Taking the time to go thru the alignment was a huge help getting things back together. I can't thank you enough!
I just Fixed my 2005 Wrangler TJ after watching this video! Wow Hats off to you brother worked like a charm!
This is easily the best video on RUclips on this particular subject. It helped me out BIG TIME!
Back on the road again after watching your how-to-video. I drive a 2007 Jeep liberty. Thank-you for this very informative video!
Excellent video. All I had to pay for was the ignition lock. Saved me $300.00 thank you
Your instructions and visuals are on point! The T-10 for the security bit I needed to complete this endeavor saved me a trip. Thanks again!
I just discovered that same little part broke the same way in my actuator...the one part I didn't buy.
But your video...perfect.
Thank you!
This (and the previous vid) literally just saved me from needlessly replacing my starter.
Big thanks! mine was Ignition switch but after watching this I replaced it all too. I replaced the starter and did all my grounds first (worth doing anyway) but this was a great video!!!!!
This IS THE best technical video I've seen in a while. Thank you for taking the time to explain WHY things go together like they do. TWO THUMBS UP.
This video was a perfect walk-through and solved my problem with my 2005 TJ. My actuator pin was broken exactly as this was in the video.
im gona attempt to do this later today, my actuator broke, i did process of elimination, tried the cylinder first then did the ignition switch and found out the pin broke into the switch!!! so this video definitely helps a ton, im gona attempt to replace here later..
I turn the key in the morning for the first time. Have to hold it on for 20-30 seconds and it finally starts. Starts fine unless it sits all day. Then same thing.
I checked the wiring under dash. Not melted, etc.
I replaced the starter relay. Starter and solenoid are new.
🤔🤔🤔
Bro , really big thanks from México , I literally did every single step and the same part was broken , amazing guidance 🎉
I’m a rank amateur when it comes to mechanical aptitude. This video, with your step by step, clear/ concise, chronological guidance help me rock this cylinder, actuator, and switch replacement. Gracias!
Thank you so much for putting together these videos. I never would have figured out this actuator switch install or diagnosis without these videos.
I know this is old but thank you so much for this video. 2002 wrangler sport wouldn’t start at a wawa. I knew it was this issue when I did some research. Completed the install in the wawa parking lot following your video
Identical problem with my 2003 Jeep Liberty. Your video really simplified the repair---thx!
This video series helped me out a ton. Appreciate you.
Ahhhh so helpful! My actuator pin had literally the EXACT same metal piece break off in the exact same shape and spot. Too bad it took me a battery and starter to figure out it was the pin. Thank you!
