    This video was golden. I have recently bought the 90D and was overwhelmed with all the settings and options. The biggest find was the fact that you can have two profiles! I searched for this, but couldn't find such an option. I had no idea I should have searched for 'Custom Shooting Mode' instead of 'Profiles'. Who knew?

    Bravo! You took up where Canon left (obscure manuals). All that technology is a useless maze unless clearly explained: which settings options and why. You're doing a great service to the photographer's community. We now have the cameras that photographers dreamed about ten years ago. But we have have to learn how to harness them, which is ten times more complex than ten years ago.

    This video is excellent advice. Good show!
    90D users should be aware of the under-exposure issue with Sigma and Tamron lenses. All of my Sigma and Tamron lenses are off by 1 and 1/3 stops and has to be corrected with the exposure compensation dial. Check all of your lenses! I have set C1 mode for this compensation.
    Sigma tech support is aware and their fix is to send the lens back to them for a firmware change.

    You need to try a tiny 1x power red-dot scope on the camera which mounts on the flash bracket with an adapter. You can track and focus on any bird. You hold the camera out a foot or so in front of you, keep both eyes open, and superimpose the red dot in the scope over the target, then shoot. I can focus on an airplane or planet like Jupiter in less than a second with a 600mm lens. Try that any other way and you'll be looking all over the sky.

    Somewhere shortly after the 24:00 mark Mike describes the Screen On/Off functionality. i want to point out that Canon DSLRs can do a neat trick that other manufacturers’ bodies cannot do. Specifically, I am talking about shooting from a tripod.
    Other manufacturers do not make the option to disable/enable blanking the screen when the shutter is pressed available. I set this option to not blank the screen when I press the shutter, and here’s why. I can use the rear LCD screen for seeing exposure and camera settings, instead of relying on the top side LCD screen.
    If disable blanking the screen when I press shutter, the rear LCD will display whatever I have the [INFO] screen set to display. If [INFO] is currently toggled to OFF, then nothing happens. But, when [INFO] is set to Exposure, then I get a real time dynamic display of exposure, which is identical to what you get on the top LCD, except it is far easier to read.
    I find this behavior to be especially useful when I am using tripod to shoot landscapes or macro photos.

    I’ve just got my 90 D and I have Sigma 100-400 C. I tried shooting and was so disappointed… the images were not sharp :( they were even worse than I was getting on my previous Canon Rebel SL2. Now I watched this video and have followed all instructions! First of all, I had both jpg and raw on, so I’ve left only jpg. Will try the new settings now. Hope it will help to get sharp images! 🙏 thank you for this video!

    Hey! I just joined your Facebook group because I’m awaiting the 90d 😊
    I’m torn btwn Tamron or Sigma. I read on there that you said the Tamron was checked off as working on this body and Sigma is a case by case basis. I simply can’t afford a Canon telephoto lens right now. Advice? The Sigma is great on my Nikon but I know it’s a different experience on the Canon. Only lens I have so far is the 70-300.
    Advice?

    Thank you. As Canon and other manufacturers develop higher MP sensors, some older lenses are going to have a difficult time with resolving power in my opinion. When thinking of purchasing these new cameras, It may be worth the investment to upgrade lenses when you can since newer cameras in the future are probably going to have more MP and the old lenses may not cut it. In my opinion, lenses are usually kept for many many years, so it may be worth to consider an upgrade even before upgrading the body. A camera is a strong as it's weakest component so the best cameras in the market will not be good if your lenses have issues resolving for the higher MP.

I need to upgrade bodies badly but I'm afraid that the lens I use most (400mm) will not provide good results with this camera and I'm trying to decide if I should jump ship and sell my lenses and buy a sony or go back to Nikon with a D7500 and the 200-500. Obviously just upgrading bodies makes sense financially and I'd love to get the 100-400ii but simply can't afford it.

    @MMaven I just got my 90D, after my 60D pretty much stopped working. I was thinking the 90D was going to be the same as the 60D, but with more clarity (even though I didn't think pictures could get more clear than my 60D. It used to shoot BEAUTIFUL pictures). I cannot seem to get my photos as clear and focused as I could on my 60D before it stopped declining. I want to be able to see the threads on the the softballs and baseballs as they are moving (fast), as well as being able to focus on the players at the same time. Would you recommend specific settings for this? Typically we are in the full sun but have been times when we have still been out there when the sun is going down or it gets dark. What specific settings should I use for this? I didn't have to change any settings on my 60D to be able to capture awesome photos and I just want to be able to do the same thing with the 90D for my Senior playing her last year of high school sports and my son playing sports as well. I used to be so proud of my photos with my 60D and I want to be as confident and proud of my photos with using my 90D. This was a great tutorial. I just forget what I should adjust when I am trying to capture those shots and they are not coming out as clear as I am used to.

    Canon should have default option preset for the different shooting preference with "profile preset' and make that profile available in "Picture Profile" section. Additional profile specifically for wildlife shooting will help the quickly recall the setting out without having to go through the hassle to set all those parameter individually.

    Thank you Michael. This was very informative! I currently shoot with the 7D Mark II paired with the Canon EF 100-400 IS USM II + 1.4x III extender for primarily birding photography. The issue with the older 7D Mark II is that when paired with the extender, I lose focus points. I'm only able to chose the one center point or one center with the four helper points. I lose the ability to choose the nine cluster of points which I prefer. So, my question to you, have you tried my lens setup with the 90D? Will I gain back all of my focus points as I did when I paired my lens setup with the 5D Mark IV?

    I don't think you can use Zone or Large Zone for BIF, those little focusing squares are very lazy and don't want to move when you shoot via the viewfinder, in other words they are way too slow and not responsive enough. Even when they do move, more than often they don't land on the subject and the hit rate is close to zero. It won't be easy, but use 1-Point if you must shoot BIF using the viewfinder. The only alternative is to shoot in Live View mode, in which case the same focusing squares will literally wake up, they will move fast and lock onto focus quick. But, from an operational standpoint it is impossible to do unless you have one of those LCD viewfinder contraptions that you attach onto the LCD screen at the back of the camera. That way you will be able to press your head into the eyepiece of the LCD viewfinder to help you aim otherwise it is physically impossible to use. Imagine if you have to extend both arms holding the camera and trying to aim looking at the LCD? LOL. Bottom line is this, in essence the 90D is telling you to shoot it by flipping the mirror up and using it as a mirrorless camera. Otherwise, trying to shoot BIF with the 90D is a joke.

    Michael, how come that you are using Aperture priority for sports? I have always been using Shutter priority. My reasoning is that I will almost exclusively be at the widest possible aperture to keep Iso down, and at a certain shutter speed to fit the sport and situation I’m shooting. Not saying that my way is the best, just curious to hear your reasoning behind your decision :)

    • @MMaven
      @MMaven  4 года назад

      Few reasons, the main of which I dont want my aperture changing from shot to shot, especially when I am going for f 2.8 - f4. If you are outside and a cloud comes overhead, it will try to open the aperture more to compensate for it in Tv mode. Its just a hassle when you have changing lighting conditions, so its either AV or M for me.

    I've been waiting for this camera for ages, but have held off buying one since watching many of the early reviews re. focus issues and the need for fast shutter speeds.
    I shoot a lot of small, perched birds in low light, often only getting a shutter speed of 1/50th, using the 100-400ii. Due to the size of the subjects, I often need to crop heavily, so the 32.5mp would be great for that, but in general do you think I'd be better off going for the 80d or 7dii?

      I would LOVE to know this as well as for fastpitch softball. I want to be able to clearly see the threads on the ball, like I could with my 60D before it began giving me troubles, which lead me to the purchase of my 90D.

    Such an excellent content every time and only 230K subscribers? (Don't get me wrong it is very respectable in itself!),
    but in my opinion this channel deserves a million subscribers and above! Keep it up Michael!

    I will never understand why when people say to shoot sports in Apature Priority. You know what shutter speed you are looking for when you shoot, why pick an aperture and let the camera pick a shutter speed? This makes 0 sense. If anything, you pick the shutter speed to stop your action and why even bother with the apature, if you are not stopping the action then you are failing anyway.

    hello. I am thinking to buy Canon 90D with Sigma 150-600 sport lens OR Nikon d500 with Nikkor 200-500 for Wildlife photography. What should I do?

    • @daneliberatore1978
      @daneliberatore1978 4 года назад

      I don't think anybody would dispute the D500 is a wildlife and sports shooting machine. It is made to be high performance in that area, not so much for taking video of you kids and what not.

    You mention shooting in M mode and "Locking in the Shutter Speed and Apature", well technically, you can't do that right? I tend to somehow bump mine form time to time shooting sports and find it very frustrating. Just ordered my 90D today (coming from 7DMII) and I think I am regretting the purchase already.

    this is the best bird shooting camera at the moment. the AF is nowhere near to Nikon 500 however the 32MP sensor of this camera plus 1.6 crop factor of canon gives you way sharper final image.

    Not being compatible with older Canon glass, and having to make other adjustments to accommodate the 90D, tells me this camera is not really ready for prime time, and poorly implemented. I am not a PRO but I am not aware of another DLSR EF mount release that is not compatible with EF lenses. Give me a break. Won;t be buying the 90D till they fix the problems.

    For bird in flight (tracking bird) canon 90d is good for nothing(always miss the focus in important situation's). I am selling the camera with the great difficulty. But the tutorial is good.
