I agree with you. I don't think he "nailed it". Although, generally, I'm not a fan of chart topping artists doing covers. It also doesn't help that I am a massive fan of Alice In Chains. I did enjoy this though.
For me, it's of interest to hear what someone I mostly associate with a very different genre covering something outside of their own genre. Can be really surprising, like Myley Cyrus doing Lilac Wine, or Strugil Simpson covering Nirvana's In Bloom. Sometimes it's a train wreck. This was somewhere in between.
I remember seeing another cover he did, Nirvana I think, and I was impressed. Now this auto tune bullshit is doing bad unspeakable things to this song.
