Bleeding Edge Interviews - Ep. 60: Brian J. Heaton, author of Roads to Madness
When it comes to dedication, few people can compare to Brian J. Heaton, who has assembled arguably the most complete touring history of any recording artist with his new book: Roads to Madness: A Touring History of Queensrÿche (1981-1997). If you're a fan of Queensrÿche, or just a lover of classic progressive rock and metal, this is a story you'll be interested in hearing.

Mr Bungle (mentioned in these comments), particularly Patton, were fans of Cardiacs, (and vice-versa). Smith & Patton got to meet up when Patton was touring the UK, (my friend, who was produced several times by Smith, said he saw a picture of them both on Smith's wall). Despite being around since the early 80's, Cardiacs never broke, perhaps the music was too esoteric and weird for radio play? Also, their persona (at least in the early years) was way too odd for the mainstream, (if you see pictures of them in old uniforms and horrible make up it's because they were acting as a soldier/ ghost, although Smith would say they were only trying to look their best). The band did get some press notice, a centre page spread in some tatty UK tabloid, but only because Tim claimed that he and Sarah, (who played Sax and was his wife), were actually brother & sister who had an incestuous relationship. I was lucky enough to see Cardiacs in 2007 and it seemed the band where about to break big but he had a stroke/heart attack coming back from a My Bloody Valentine gig. Random Fun fact: Their manager also managed Napalm Death.

Mike Patton is by far my favorite artist. First of all, you cannot ignore his 6 octave range. Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, Dillinger Escape Plan, Fantomas, Dead Cross, Lovage, Crudo and more. Incredible. Check out The Directors Cut by Fantomas. It's movie theme songs remade using a lot of vocal... just check it out along with all the others.

Nice Interview. I found out about the Album through Notes Reviews, went and listened to it a few times and then bought it. The 80s vibes whas the thing that pushed me over the edge and made me go buy it. Prog-Metal has gone very not Proggy and very same-y over the years. Mannequin has a lot of similarities to Hakes Affinity, which is my favorite of theirs despite also being critised over the synth-y approach. 80s sounds i really enjoy, that's why Jethro Tulls - Under Wraps is one of their greatest for me and i hope i see more bands go for that approach. Again, great interview @Bleeding Edge.

British Steel was a huge, loss-making, state-owned British company in the late 70's, then Britain's biggest steel producer. The song was a satire where out-of touch parents were deciding on their son's future in one of many slowly-failing, British companies at that time,

Wow, this is the first time I've heard the studio cut. I've been watching RUclips posts of live shows and love this tune. I saw them debut it in Los Angeles. Have not heard the new album. Looking forward. They are all educated musicians from prestiges schools. I think they lean to the avant garde with some elements of metal. Dan their bass player creates instruments. He created an instrument from the low strings of the piano he plays like a slide guitar. He calls it the sledgehammer dulsimer.

Oh...that's such a challenge you present. I have a rather intense dislike of him as a human, plus I've seldom enjoyed the solo work I've heard. Seems odd to think that, because so much of him is in Floyd and I love them. So...seems reasonable to think I might like his solo work at least a little bit. Doesn't help that he insists on singing and his vocals were among the weakest moments of Floyd for me. Maybe I'll get a bit drunk and give this a shot someday.

My girlfriend got me to listen to that one. Kinda like The Division Bell, there were parts I liked well enough, but I just didn't really love it. Possible that it's one of those that takes repeat listens to have an impact (My classic example of that for me is Marillion's Marbles, which didn't grab me from the start and it was only after playing it as background music at work that one day I suddenly realized: I LOVE this album!), but I haven't gotten back to it, yet.

Oh he's been a busy lad. But a lot of his music was merely internal, and with family since his last solo album. Yes, this new one hits the spot, and in fact another track dropped today which features his daughter Romany, who is a spitting image of a young David, and seems to have inherited some of that brilliance as well. Watch these two, then watch the explainer for the new track: ruclips.net/video/dGdEe8yp2TI/видео.html ( David Gilmour with Romany Gilmour - Yes, I Have Ghosts (Von Trapped Series) ) ruclips.net/video/T_gQ_D5yhAE/видео.html ( David Gilmour and Romany Gilmour - Kokineli ) Can you imagine having David as your dad and music teacher? Then watch him beaming with pride as she knocks out an incredible vocal in essentially one take: ruclips.net/video/hCQcKUtg9kc/видео.html ( David Gilmour - Between Two Points (Explainer) )

This track is undoubtedly long for what it is, but that reinforces its hypnotic aspect, so in the end it serves its purpose. The hi-hat was probably deliberately under-mixed because remember that in the very early 80s it was popular in post-punk and new wave, especially in the UK, to favour martial drums and toms over cymbals, especially since Peter Gabriel had released his third album in 1980 in which he expressly asked that cymbals be banned during recording sessions. This attitude was adopted at the time by bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Psychedelic Furs, Public Image Ltd, Killing Joke.... Just as you'd be hard-pressed to find guitar or keyboard solos with XTC - not really their style! 😉

It should be worth noting that while Cardiacs got most of its audience from the Prog (and to some extent punk scenes), they always rejected both labels, with Tim prefering "psychedelic pop". End of the day really the only genre they belong to is their own one.

another interesting fact to their lyrics: as patton said that most of the things he sings about are mostly a joke to confuse people and see their stupid faces when he comes up with lyrics like these, he said that to him lyrics are just a way to make the music around them sound more interesting and on point. like they´re just a way to put the instruments and the picture that they create with the whole song to put on the front. thats so unusual when u think of it, that most composers and songwriters create lyrics with deep meaning to give this whole song an forced vibe, but just choosing words just to make the whole arrangement sound more interesting and for certain words to fit an specific melody or signature shift and make them more present with that is just so overwhelming to think of. sorry if that´s hard to read or even sound ridiculous, i´m baked
