    With all the powercreep going on, I'd love for most of the starters (and most other pokémon to be honest) to get a revamp/rebalance to their movepools and stats.
    Especially the Johto starters haven't gotten any love and it shows. I really like Meganium but it always feels like it misses any sort of niche to go with it's OK bulk and it's movepool is really bad.
    Same goes for Typhlosion, it's specced as a special attacker but the majority of it's movepool is physical which really hurts. Sceptile has this problem too but atleast it has Sword's Dance.
    I hoped that the rebalancing and move distribution would've come with Sword and Shield with the TR system, but now I hope we just get a big rebalance in gen 9 or whatever comes after Legends of Arceus. Not all pokémon have to be fantastic but I'd like for most 'mon to have a solid niche or gameplan going forward.

      Represented by Tier
      Gen 1: AAA
      Gen 2: DFF
      Gen 3: BCF
      Gen 4: CCF
      Gen 5: BDD
      Gen 6: BCD
      Gen 7: SBD
      Gen 8: SBC
      If we add up the score out the scores (F = 1 - S = 6), the ranking goes as follows.
      Gen 1 = 15
      Gen 8 = 13
      Gen 7 = 12
      Gen 6 = 9
      Gen 3 = 8
      Gen 5 = 8
      Gen 2 = 4
      Overall, I think it's fair to say there's some power creep with the most recent 2 generations and obviously gen 2 is bad. But 6, 3, and 5 are actually very similar. I put 3 over 5 since swampert is likely better than serperior by a decent margin, but this is much more balanced than I was expecting. More than power creep itself, it just seems like certain mons are better able to abuse certain formats, giving newer mons homefield advantage. Obvi that does not apply to incineroar at all, and if terrains continue to stay as they are, rillaboom will likely maintain that momentum too.
      It is an interesting look though.

      @@MrStarman926 A few things.
      -Landourus-T(the other form is far less relevant, altho is usable) has intimidate, which is one of the best abilities in the game. It drops the attack of opposing pokemon by 1 stage(33% damage reduction assuming no other changes at the time). In doubles, intimidate hits both opposing pokemon, so its a good way to control the field.
      -It has stats spread in a way that are very beneficial for certain competitive roles(pokemon are usually categorized into those in comp. play, sort of like tank dps healer in rpgs and such), which can range from (bulky)physical sweeper to physical tank for Lando. It's very high attack make it pretty threatening at all times, no matter what exactly it does decide to go for.
      -U-Turn is an amazing support move to generate momentum. Infact, Lando-T's movepool in general has rather good coverage. Rock Slide, Earthquake, Swords Dance, Rockpolish, U-Turn, Stone Edge, Grass Knot, Brick Break, Fly are just some of the more common moves it has access to, which are staple moves in competitive play one way or another.
      -Lando-T has great typing, Ground/Flying offers good STAB, nice immunities/resistances, they cover each other reasonable well and are generally just some of the more useful types to have on mons. Those types in particular are quite nice at dealing with physical pokemon in many cases, which is exactly what Lando likes doing anyway.
      I didn't mention everything here, just some of the major points first coming to mind. The bottom line really is that this pokemon has a very well-rounded full package going for it that serves a competitive purpose amazingly well. All these things i mentioned work well together to allow this pokemon to perform a variety of roles on teams in both singles and doubles. Some examples of how these points add up could be:
      -U-Turn allows for consistent intimidate pivoting and overall flexiblity, which creates even more opportunities to abuse this advantage and natural bulk(which helps with consistent switching).
      -It's bulk(including intimidate) make it easier to abuse its swords dance and amazing earthquake/rockslide combo, and its nice speedtier either allow instant threatening, or because of its nice EV spread, you can run a bulkier version that makes it even harder to kill it, and instead support it with speedcontrol like tailwind.
      -It's typing+stats allows it to serve as a blanket check for many big common threats such as garchomp.
      -The high amount of flexibility in regards to competitive EV,move and item-choices can make it very hard to know the best course of action, often leading to suboptimal play before sufficient information is gathered. You can minimize this issue with proper option coverage, and in some formats you are given this info upfront, but it can be a problem.
      Many options and things going for this pokemon, making it something that provides a lot for almost any team in one way or another. Such things increase usage. It's even pretty good vs itself as a switch-in in various situations, leading to an even higher usage because people often use it to deal with it or atleast handle it a bit more flexibly. Hope i gave you some ideas and sufficient examples as to why this pokemon is pretty good, and one of the most used ones in both single and doubles(in the formats it is allowed in anyways). If you want more details for any of the points i made(i kept them all pretty short and left stuff out), feel free to ask :)

    Although very few play this way, there are two starters that have important support functionality.
    I'm surprised Inteleon made it to C-tier off of its offense alone! I would place it the same solely for its speed. It's the fastest pokemon available for Water Pledge and Soak so it can be a fun partner to use with Venusaur!
    The other I wanna mention is Sceptile, who I found can be useful for very specific things. Access to Worry Seed, Brutal Swing, a somewhat strong one-use Leaf Storm, etc. lets it perform on particular teams (Regigagigas + WP Metagross, for example). With unberden available too, I think D-tier is reasonable for our leafy boi purely because it can do SOMETHING (unlike meganium and torterra rip)

Venusaur if you use Charizard y, Greninja to get up spikes to complement infernape's rocks as well as pivot with uturn. Blaziken is Blaziken. Empoleon if you want hazard removal with defog. Typhlosion can click scarf eruption, feraligatr can set up behind screens from serperior. sceptile can also be used for speed control with unburden. chesnaught is a good physical tank. Sceptile is one of the few Pokemon that actually got nerfed by the physical/special split because it had good quality move access to quite a few special types giving it great special coverage, and basically all of those moves later became physical like Leaf Blade, Crunch, Thunder Punch, and Dragon Claw, and its special movepool now isn't as good. Energy Ball and Dragon Pulse made up for the grass and dragon coverage, but it has basically nothing more than that, I think its only other special type coverage it really has is through Focus Blast. It's just unfortunate because you can tell it's meant to be a specially oriented mixed attacker, which is supported by its mega getting lightningrod, but it has no special coverage to make use of its okay stats.

    • @rakaturaku9537
      @rakaturaku9537 2 года назад

      I agree with you. But after all, grass still bad for that stats. I think Sceptile can be better if mege form give second type which support attacker like Rock, ground or Psychic.

    Gen 1, 2 and 3 starters will always be special for me. Sure its some nostalgia, but imo only few of the other starters come close to the first 3 gens in terms of design. Too many of the new starters got overly cool or cute designs which makes them not original at all.

    it's always so interesting learning how different pokemon do in a competitive context compared to my experience using them in casual play
    I'm most familiar with gen 4, recently even started playing pokemon platinum, and Turtwig's always been an astounding part of my team. with my first attempt at renegade platinum being every rule from a hardcore nuzlocke except for permadeath itself (since I find the team building with limited encounters to be the fun part) my +ATK Turtwig has been a star of my team
    but obviously competitive pokemon - especially modern competitive with all the power creep that seems to be one of the biggest factors - it makes sense that Torterra just being a generic bulky physical attacker doesn't get it anywhere special
    also reminds me of the time a friend berated me for choosing Turtwig as my starter every time because "don't you know Torterra has a 4 times weakness to ice?"
    not sure why he thought that was such a big deal, as I could just. not use Torterra against ice types

    I think Greninja would be good if it was legal, at least as good as Blastoise. I think you underrated Primarina and Cinderace too, just because they were both extremely good at different points in the generation. I think all 3 of those should be A tier if Blastoise is. I think Venu and Zard are better in context though both are rather sun dependent

    • @RFDN0
      @RFDN0 3 года назад

      Greninja would lose HP. That would make it like Cinderace as a fast and frail limited type changing monster. In VGC most mons with that type of build don't work very well. It would have uses and Dynamax would give it much needed bulk but there are better fast attackers.
      A tier is insane damage output and viable sets.
      S tier is this mon literally warps the metagame around them. Charizard and Venasaur are amazing without dynamax only on sun teams.

    • @LOLSpellsingerXD
      @LOLSpellsingerXD 3 года назад +1

      What kikiriki said pretty much. Single matches take far, far longer even if the games are somewhat offensive. If two very defensive teams meet, you can end up looking at easily over a hundred turns. That's not really viable for any event with a schedule. It's probably also harder to make it very entertaining for an audience, altho i personally never felt an issue with it when i was participating or watching singles events. Singles has a lot of popularity in general, so its not like you're going to struggle to find people to play with if you're interested :)

    The only thing I don't agree with is Feraligatr being lower than Samurott. Samurott is mixed but doesn't really shine in either while Feraligatr has better defenses, slightly more speed and can deal more damage thanks to Sheer Force + Life Orb. Not that either would be very viable but I'd say they should either be in the same tier or switch places.

    I haven't kept up with the VGC meta since Smash Ultimate came out, so it's pretty funny to see that Incineroar is a meta-shaping s-tier, considering he's a low tier in smash. No trick room to offset slow speed, and thank god for that lol
