I was raised on bluegill and red-ears. A friend taught me to fly fish for stocked rainbow trout and had fun, but wondered if I could fly fish for bluegill. The answer is YES! Bluegill are more fun than trout on a fly rod in my opinion. I would have loved to try that pond with a fly rod.
I do the same. Fly fishing for warm water species is a blast since they are generally more willing than almost anything else. It makes for a fun day, and for folks who want to learn how to fly fish, it's a good way to start. It's not as frustrating as steelhead and trout fishing.
I'm 50 now, but when I was in middle school, a friend of my grandfather had a pond loaded with Georgia hybrids. Everyone I caught for years I had to lip as they were too large to get a hand around. Absolutely loved catching those on light tackle. Some of the best fishing memories I have.
My brother and me used ta catch so many blue gill that we started to try baits that wouldn't catch em, never found one. Cig butt's - fish! Chewing gum - fish! Boogers - fish! Sticks - fish! We had a blast all those summers ago. Fished Ate PBJs I think he was 8 and I was 10 Cool memory Thank you
I’ve caught a few pigs before but I’ve never seen sunfish so dark colored like that! They don’t look like that around here, it’s weird how they change regionally like that. Super cool!
You being a Kastking Guy have you tried The Spartacus II rod and reel? I just got mine a few weeks ago and it’s nice. Haven’t caught a fish on it yet but I’m trying. I hope someday to catch some MONSTERS like you do. 🤓
My biggest gill was enough to fill a full sheet of printer paper. It was a 1/4 inch shorter and about a 1/4 inch under the ends and sides. Caught it on a black panter martin
I don’t understand the people that get so hung up on other people fishing. Especially when you’re releasing everything and treating the surroundings respectfully, what does it hurt? I wouldn’t have yelled at that guy cause he wasn’t too bad about it but I’ve had pissing matches with other people over the years that have tried to kick me off public land 🤣
I’ve got a spot where we go hunting at and 5 years ago I caught a red ear that was probably a pound or over and since then I’ve been trying to catch a 3-4 pound bluegill/panfish
Do you ever share your locations? I am from Alvin and my boyfriend is an avid fresh water where I am a salt water fisher woman. So trying to find spots for us to try.
That's why I always try to meet and befriend someone in a house and get permission. Then you can just answer, "my uncle so and so in #307 said I can fish when I visit him." Works like a charm. I mow several lawns and take trash and stuff for free to get access to the lake.
It would been different if y’all were causing problems throwing trash out hollering stuff like that but whoever that is probably needs an attitude adjustment.

All my biggest bluegill have been caught on a fly or fly fishing. It’s amazing how well a fly 2ft under a bobber works.

Put trophy bass on by procure game on. This attractant helps alot. I throw soft plastics at night using trophy bass by procure and I catch em. 🙂
