Kendall gray I’ve watched for 4 years could you maybe stock it with some catfish and in the future doing a catfishing in my pond video love the content
I would recommend buying some redear sunfish or pumpkinseed sunfish (depending on where you are in the country) for snail and parasite control. I would also recommend stocking FINGERLING bass. Don't go catching 1-2 lb bass from a neighbors pond and throw them in this fall. There will not be enough appropriately sized forage for them to thrive. For reference I just stocked my 5ac lake in Georgia with 1000 bluegill, 250 redear, 1000 fathead minnows per acre. Later this year I will add 50 largemouth bass fingerlings (2") per acre. There is a science to this, so it is confusing to me why your family would spend 100s of hours building this pond and then skimp out on $1000 worth of quality fish to stock it. The pond can still turn out just fine, but stocking it yourself instead of following proven stocking recommendations can be the difference in the pond being "great" as opposed to "world class". I was happy to hear you emphasize the need for true bluegill and pass over the other "bream" species. Please continue to stay away from crappie as well if you care about good bass fishing.
Yeah, it is important to keep the food and by that also the age of the species and the age of the pond into account and pick their numbers accordingly. As a fresh pond will not offer much food for the fish at all. I currently restocked an older fish pond, which was not used for a while. But the species were different, as its in Europe. Edit: also when stocking fish you should not just throw them in, but slowly mix the waters so they can adjust to the new temperature and water chemistry.
Sounds like sound advice. Just wondering why you said to stay away from crappie. Is that because they compete for same food as bass? I kinda like crappie, but I understand preference for bass. What would you recommend for a crappie pond? Black or white better? I really do love bluegill best. Just wondering.
@@loyalUSguy Bass and crappie don't do well in small ponds and lakes. Crappie have a tendency to take over and then stunt at a small size. That first one you caught in the creek was a red ear sunfish or known more commonly in the south as a shell cracker… They have crushers in their throat so they can crunch a snail or small freshwater clam and crush it up and get the goody out on the inside… Hence the name shell cracker… That’s one of the hardest pulling fish in fresh water pound for pound… They are VERY FUN to catch when they get some shoulders on em… I’ve caught shell crackers that were a couple pounds and about 14 inches long… They’ll out pull a bass of equal weight any day of the week.. They get that sideways run going and they’ll be pulling drag on 4 pound test like it ain’t nothing… It’s a lot of fun with an ultra light. If the pond on your property is still under construction you should make a sand and gravel bottom in like 2-10 feet of water for a spawning area… Most fish want a sand or gravel bottom for spawning. Bass and panfish especially.
I'm 73. My son took me fishing the other day on his pontoon and I caught my largest shellcracker at just under 2 pounds! I was using lightweight tackle and 4# line, and it was fun! I was so afraid it was going to get off before I could land it, but finally able to get it in the net. What fun, and he really did put up a fight! He lost his head and is in the freezer now just waiting for me to have a fish fry!
A suggestion on your bubble box and live well cooler. Buy a 5 inch aquarium stone and use double sided sticky tap to keep it down stick your hose on that and you'll get better oxygenated water for your bait.
You need some pea gravel areas for bluegill to spawn on. From what I saw of your build, you have a dirt/clay bottom across your pond. They make spawning trays that are the right size to fill with gravel to keep them down and the double as a place to hide under them once the fry hatch through small holes.
If you want fish structure take some Christmas trees and put a block on the bottom of each one and set them up in the pond and it will stand up like a tree if you do it right
You should fall a tree out the edge of your woods into the pond for fish cover but leave it connected to the stump so it’ll keep growing on the land and possibly the rest of it to
It was a good video and I relly enyoyd it. I fish a lot myself and a problem is waste fishingline just laying around, please dont trow away fishing line on land, trow it in the trash! ❤
Getting minnows in a minnow trap doesn't require bait. Trap placement is what counts. If your crayfishing or crabbing, use bait. I say that with 40+ years of trapping. I should also ad that those traps will drown any air breathing animal if the trap is fully submerged. Just something to keep in mind.

I think you’d benefit from reviewing Bama Bass stocking his pond!! His started off and stocked his pond with blue gill and bass. His bass has gained 2 to 3 pounds within a year. His blue gill are thriving as well.
2 traps at a time, is the way to go, often a snake or frog or larger fish are attracted to your minnows, 2 traps allows an option for bait that shows up later to get trapped.
Nothing like some pan fried blue gill. Gut em,, scale em, bread em, fry em. Little bones, but they're not too hard to avoid, and they taste pretty good. Not muddy or dirty like catfish, but not as clean as like cod or something. Bluegill are nice
I would put a metal net over that big pipe, Just in case your fishes decide to take a swim in the pipe, And not return. Where do the pipe lead to? Just asking, Love the adventures.
I’m no expert but my advice would be leave the bluegills spawn. Pay the little bit of money to have a stock truck full or red fins come out and also leave them spawn a few times. And then stock bass in the spring. Also don’t be afraid to have a stock truck bring minnows 1-2 times a year.
Stack cinderblocks for structure. Fish will hide in it. Can also add a PVC pipe structure with cut openings along the tops where silt can settle and plants will take hold of the PVC frame
I hear this guy say “minner” and I’m instantly transported back to being 14, working a summer on a farm in North Carolina. Sweatin’ every weekday and fishin’ all weekend.

Need to remember that you are catching males and females. People managing ponds need to learn to tell them apart. Especially when you start to harvest them. I just want to tell you that panfish (this includes bluegill) can eat all the food that baby bass eat so they don’t get as big so just keep the bluegill population medium because I know you want to catch some begins in your pond in the future
Ain't trying to throw a wrench in yer plan but the thing to do woulda been to make sure you had good spawning areas for your bluegills before u stocked em. Something like pea gravels and sand maybe?

My parents sold it in 2020 but about 5 years before that it got to a point that the bluegill had completely overpopulated the pond and the bass couldn't grow. Growing up about one a month in the summers we would have a bunch of family over and catch bluegill and have a fish fry but toward the end there was no way we could eat them
Hey Kendall, just letting you know my 6 year old Boy and me love watching your Channel. We like to fish and at 5 years old he knew many fish species from watching your shows. Keep up the good work and god bless. Jake LaFoy SC
Best procedure is to slowly pour water from your pond into the cooler over the course of 15-20min before dumping them in so it doesn’t stun then like it did when you just poured them in. Two completely different bodies of water, one being a new pond, could have wildly different perimeters that the fish after use to after spending their whole life in one body of water
If you're stocking a pond with bluegill you really have to pay attention to gendering them for the purpose of the bluegill use. 3 male genders and females, and gender is genetic the large males are one genotype and the small and medium another. Large males with long ear tabs are the nest builders and primary breeders, but only have about 70% spawn rate if the other genotype is not present. That increases to 85% spawn rate for just the large males if the other genotype is present because the mediums do this weird, sloppy seconds 3-some thing when they get involved with the spawn and increases overall spawn rate to 95%. The small are just opportunistic seeders that fertilize multiple spawns. If you're planning on just using the bluegill for feeders and not frying you can ignore the genders and the predators will swing your pond towards the small genotype but continuously high breeding. If you want big keeper bluegill consistently vs. overall stock you have to cull the small and medium adult males. If they are dark, smaller than your palm with long ear tabs get them out. It's a common misconception that overstocking leads to smaller bluegill, it's just that the smaller genotype sees more breeding opportunity in a congested pond than the larger one.
