Before I get away from the original point, I completely agree that Mike's antics are a FANTASTIC introduction to GA, and the hobby as a whole. That said... Believe me, there's a bunch of people interested, but with the cost of entry during at appetizing $150/hr and rising fast, the pool of people who might realistically consider GA as an attainable hobby is shrinking fast. Add to that an ever shrinking number of municipal airports, decreasing visibility from the general public, and ever increasing regulation by the FAA, and you have a recipe for eventual extinction.
@@prelude2tube Trust me... I *TOTALLY* understand. I got most of my hours back in the day when you could get a really nice plane for $85 with an instructor and you could buy a Cessna 172 in good condition for under $60k. I'm disheartened at how expensive airplanes and 110LL fuel has gotten. And when you spend $100k to get all of your ratings just so you can make less than minimum wage flying cargo at all hours of the night... that's the REAL issue. Entry level flying positions just aren't paying well enough to make it an attractive career.
@@prelude2tube 150 for an hour?! Maaaan, you are still good :)! In Europe, we paid approximately 220 - 280 per hour, just old good steam Cessna 172. It literally makes me cry sometimes, most of the time to be honest.

I want to say what an awesome friend you are to Cletus . I just watched his video of his new plane and how instrumental you where in the whole deal. you the man. I'm really impressed with your kindness and willingness to help out a brother. you are one awesome dude.
I’m just getting started and I’m 60. I had kind of been around airplanes all my life but until recently I was. It as serious as I am now. This engineering is amazing.
I am very impressed with your skills worked as a maintenance technician for 40 years worked around and with a lot of engineers and worked with very few that could do the work only the design.
I saw that fuel probe and had flashbacks to hunting down a bad probe on an F-111 wing tank almost 30 years ago. I might miss aircraft maintenance more than I thought.
I've been using a tapered 3 gallon header tank in my RANS S-7S for years. By waggling the wings in flight I'm able to get every drop of fuel out of the mains, and thus every drop out of the header. Besides the sight gauges in the main wing tanks, the header itself also has a sight gauge, so when I run out of fuel, I have a 3 gallon visual warning. It's awkward to see, but when I get down to that low of a level I have found my flexibility increases dramatically!
So Mike is a Redbull engineer? Or just a Redbull badass! I wonder how long before Horizon Hobby is by to 3D scan this new plane? Did anyone else notice the old Draco parts on the bench? More aviation goodness!
Someone sent us that clip on a family WhatsApp group. The little plane landing on a helipad. I had no idea it was you who designed and built that little beast. I should have guessed. Who else is that crazy??? 😂 Mike Patey you are the GOAT in what you do sir. Hats off!
Give and take everywhere to accomplish the end goal. Overall we stripped out almost 100 lbs of an already VERY light airplane...while adding in everything needed for the event.
I hope this video inspires the next generation of aeronautical engineers, may be a Mike Patey school of aeronautical engineering should be built in in Spanish Fork Utah.
So the Tail Number... N456R as a DC3-C used to belong to Jerry Lee Lewis. Thought that was a cool nerdy fact. Mike, I love the channel. I love how you walk us through the steps of a build/modification. I had an Applied Physics teacher with that mentality in high school, and I would not be in the industry I am in without his guidance.
I've cut weight out of both race cars and aircraft and it always amazes me how much you can get out of them (one oz at a time). You have to look at it as a complete package and be very thorough but the rewards can be spectacular. Great job Mike. Thankyou for sharing.
Hey Mike, you probably already considered this but regarding the removable fuel tank, you might have been able to use a dry break coupling for disconnecting the fuel line. Requires no tools and you can break the connection with fuel still in the tank if needed. Radium engineering makes them in AN-6 and -8 sizes. Awesome video as always. Back to work!
@@hunterperformancepros The stock fuel system for a Carbon Cub would use 3/8” (-6) lines and fittings but even if they totally re-plumbed the entire fuel system (which, knowing Mike, he may have), a 1/2” (-8) system would be more than enough. It’s probably more of a weight/availability concern than anything. Dry-breaks would certainly be heavier.
Congratulations on a one of a kind landing , what an awesome build I look forward to every video ,I know you might not be able to say anything yet but I'm hoping for a Draco 2.0 coming soon
After watching at least two years of being subscribed to your channel, I really wish I would have been more interested and attentive in mathematics classes in school. I understand the mechanical aspect but not the engineering side of it. Love all the videos that you put out. Along, with your brother as well.

I recently saw a video of the plane landing in Dubai and immediately thought of you! Hahahaha! I've been to that hotel, by the way, didn't stay there though.
