I started flying a PA-11 Super-Cub and I truly love that plane. Flew about 100 hours it that model, until I finally decided to go to a tricycle. Obviously I found much easier to fly the rest of airplanes. But I'm still a fan of any taildragger. Got about 40 hours as a student pilot, and when I was about 20 hours more I started flying it in the rear seat. Much more comfortable, and found it's much easier to land when you are seated at the rear seat. You get an excellent perspective and height-feeling, you can feel clearly how high you are... is great! Now it's about 20 years of that time... and watching you flying this and the other Cub... it was quite moving. I love it. Thank you so much for sharing! Best of best whishes Steveo!!!!
Awesome Steve! It was great to see you challenged! My favorite video to date on your channel. Scenery, plane, instructor, conditions, 1.5 second takeoff, slow flight that was incredibly slow, and best of all your reactions to the experience.
When I first started flying my first flight was a gusty day here in Alaska but my instructor had me let go for 20 second and it smoothed out. I quickly realized getting tense in the wind causes you to make your own turbulence and in the 172 it’s no horrible but you definitely notice a difference when you relax and control the plane but flying TD like the cub for my first time I got tense for a minute and it started getting real bumpy tell I let go breathed and relaxed those 30k gusts get way less dramatic.
Well that was awesome! My first was in a 90hp Luscomb. Never truer words ever spoken when he said "remember happy feet" I know of what he speaks. Great Job SteveO! This is why I fly.
It's brilliant to see you out of your comfort zone like this, makes us appreciate just how huge the range of ways to fly aircraft really is. Bet you learned a lot on that flight, I'm envious!
Steve! I’ve been watching your videos for quite some time, huge fan. I just wanted to let you know that you have made me want to become a pilot. Found a good flight school near me and after watching our videos and learning what IFR and VFR is and how you work the radio may give me an edge when I take my discovery flight! Just wanted to say thank you!
I smashed the thumbs up button hard on this one Steve. I learned in a 1947 Piper Vagabond flying out of a potato field where the farmer let my dad land, and keep a narrow dirt runway wich enabled us to keep the plane tied down on our front lawn. I later soloed in our 1965 Citabria. I had a few flights that were windy, but not as bad as what you had in this video. Great job!! Great stick and rudder man.
What a thrill that was Steveo! Reminded me of my Aeronica champ days only back then, I had to hand prop it to start it. This was in Whitefield, New Hampshire over Mt Washington at -20 degrees F and no heat with all the famous winds in that area. I felt all the thrills you had...You done good! Thanks for a very well put together video. You had an excellent backseater!
Great video. Was awesome to see a veteran pilot take on a heart pounding, breath stealing training challenge and totally nail it! Logged my very first solo this week and now truly realize just how amazing that feeling is. Videos are awesome brother, keep em coming, and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! Happy Veteran’s Day.
Thanks for including the shot of the go-around. Good reminder that even very experienced pilots have to go around sometimes, so I should never hesitate to go around if it doesn't feel right.
Rock-n-roll! Brought me to mind of my Uncle James Crowley taking me up in his '43 Champ. He was a S.T.O.L. Pilot and didn't even know it! Brandon Airport, 1977.
way to go steveo it's all about finding that comfort zone and getting to know the feel of the new airplane you did a fantastic job nice aeroplane that carbon fiber high power
Kinda cool to see you push yourself and be up for the challenge. Love this channel, and Flight Chops because its all about the flying. Pure and simple.
Hats off to you Steve, you greased it in there on your first attempt despite the snakes in the cockpit. That guy was an awesome instructor as well. Great video as usual!
You did great Steveo being a "Virgin Tail Dragger pilot". I learned to fly in a J3 Cub back in the early 60's...way back when no one knew what carbon fiber was. If you will look back at your video when you were doing the stalls...you were actually flying back wards, and still flying. That is always fun. Great job...fly safe.
THANK you from Colorado, Steveo and Patrick...I took a second to realize how...intimately I was sharing-feeling-the intensity of your first landing. It was like the first time I kissed a girl. Maybe the first time I asked Gretchen to dance at Cotillion when I was in the 6th grade. Wow. Blessings on you both for sharing this event. I truly felt like I was flying with you. Kudos, brothers...
Great job, Steve!! Orcas Island is one windy place. Flew a 172 into there many years ago. Stayed overnight on the waterfront. Wind picked up like crazy at 2am and I had to walk out to the airport by myself in the pitch dark to make sure the 172 was tied down adequately, while visualizing finding the 172 lying on its back. “Borrowed” a bunch of twine from the hardware store display, and an unguarded garden hose from a house near the airport as additional tiedowns. 🤪
Great Video Steve-o! Welcome to the tailwheel world. Those were some good landings, especially in strong gusts - great thing about the Cub is it lands so slow; but they are light so they bounce around a lot more than heavier airplanes! Now that you've flown one you can see that Tailwheel isn't as hard as everyone hypes it up to be. Everyone fears the ground loop, but watch out for the bounces, those bend more tailwheel airplanes than ground loops do.
Dude, the Carbon Cubs are just absolutely SICK !!!!!!!!!!! As I imagine Iv'e said before SteveO, I have built 2 Super Cubs from kit and my main job was assembling the wings and covering the entire airframe. As much as I would love a good ol Super Cub, these Carbon Cubs are just too much to pass up if a guy is financially able to get in to one. You did a great job flying it bro !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very exciting flight! My flight exam two weeks ago in Campbell River BC, was in 14kts gusting 18.. I felt just like Steve in this video.. oh and I greased all my landing! What a thrill to see someone experience what I had going through my mind!! Thanks for the video ..
Steveo, Excellent Video!!! Beautiful scenery, Great flying, and an extremely Calm, Confident and Competent instructor, make the most challenging of landings look like a sunset walk on the beach. Way to go Steveo!!!!
dude you are a really skilled pilot. that is CRAZY for your first time in a tail dragger in those conditions. I didnt even know you could fly those things in that kind of wind.
Great speaking with you at the AOPA fly-in today. It really helps watching your video and then seeing yourself and the plane in-person to really understand the scope of your films.
9:55 Watch the wheel against the ground on the steep turn to the left. It looks like a perfect example of a turn on point or around the point,. Cool stuff!
I'm glad you got to fly a tail dragging cub in the Pacific NorthWest!!! It's a huge flying community here and amazing scenery to look at. I flew a tail dragger once. It was a Starduster biplane. At slow speeds was was like a cub, and full throttle it flew like a fighter jet!
Steveo, I learned to fly at Tacoma Narrows Airport south of Seattle. My flight instructors were all from Central Washington University in Eastern WA, super windy! They learned to fly and taught us to land X-wind. Pilots say if you can fly in the PNW you can fly anywhere. Glad you made it up to the Pacific Northwest!!
New viewer here, just watched this. Good job! After years of flying heavy jets I had a similar experience during my first private pilot experience. I kept coming in high and landing long and realized I was used to a 12’ eye-height in a big jet versus being much lower to the ground in a small single.
Loved it Steveo - great job. Reminded me of my student pilot training in a Fleet 80 (Fleet Canuck) and then progressed to the "killer 140" as the Cessna 140 was known due to easy ground looping.
Steveo, I've never seen you work so hard. That landing was beautiful, had me nervous. That plane jumped off the runway faster than a helicopter. Loved this video. Thank you!
Great job, flying the seat of your pants, Steve! Nothing like a simple airplane in windy conditions to remind you about basic flying skills! Taildraggers seem to keep even the most sophisticated pilot honest with his skills!
Fantastic VLOG Steveo! We're very happy you enjoyed our beautiful scenery (and wind), and had some fun in the Carbon Cub FX. We're looking forward to your next adventure!
Its getting more fun once you get used to it, you thought he was kidding when he said let's take off...lol..Dying laughing because I have never seen you have a adreline rush like that...great video and what and experience!!
My dad was a pro with them cubs. I used to fly with him down by Galveston, landed on an island down there and we flew with the window over the door completely opened. Pretty cool. Brings back memories
Nice to see the carbon cup, the resurrection of one of the most versatile tail draggers ever built, the Piper Super Cup. I flew it for aero towing and low level cross country trips.
I absolutely love these videos, i mean i love all your video's steve but the ones of you trying new things is really cool, its so good to see someone with your skill and experience share what it is like to be in these different planes all around the place, massive props to you, liked and subbed! Keep up the excellent work
You nailed it! Nice work. We could tell you were moving like crazy in the cockpit during the first approach. Really good camera angle. Did I sense a bit of relief once you got the cub stopped? We’ve all been there during our first tailwheel fights. Get the endorsement. You will love it.
thank you both for sharing a great experience with us all thank all whom put this all together i loved it all please continue to be all of you so we can learn together
Wow, this was the most entertaining video I've ever seen! Amazing skills man. My favorite part was you trying to continue narrating during the landing. I felt the adrenaline from over here.
Have been watching you for a long time now ... thought you were the "coolest" flyer ... you actually got shook up there , I think I could see the sweat ... Not taking anything away from you , it's amazing what you can turn your hand too ... good pilot man , I would fly with you through hell ;-)
Loved this one! I only recently found your channel Steveo, but I've been binge watching. Your editing, audio selection and general production values as well as your knowledge and the way you impart that to your audience are truly fantastic. This is a gem of a channel.
I really liked how upon his call out instead of using his n numbers he said blue and white cub. Great for identification , less confusion. I'm hoping to buy a sport carbon cub.
I think that was extrordinary you landed your first one under those conditions .. You adapt quickly , means talented seat of the pants pilot , good hand eye foot coordination.. This one was super entertaining BTW .. one of your best videos
Watch out, big tire flying is addicting!
Turns out watching big tire flying is also addicting. You and Steveo’s channels are incredibly underrated
Never seen you nervous before Steve. Fun to push the comfort zone sometimes. Looks like a blast out there.
I started flying a PA-11 Super-Cub and I truly love that plane. Flew about 100 hours it that model, until I finally decided to go to a tricycle. 17:33 Steve- Alrighty, I've had enough
Instructor: Nah, let's go again
Nice job, Steve. Looked pretty gnarly!
Awesome Steve! It was great to see you challenged! My favorite video to date on your channel. Scenery, plane, instructor, conditions, 1.5 second takeoff, slow flight that was incredibly slow, and best of all your reactions to the experience.

All most a carrier landing . Your back seater was calling the ball. S1K. Thank you for your time and your videos.
Pilot bucket list item! Great job as always SteveO!
Well that was awesome! My first was in a 90hp Luscomb. Never truer words ever spoken when he said "remember happy feet" I know of what he speaks. Great Job SteveO! This is why I fly.

Always so good to get out of your comfort zone... it only makes your comfort zone grow! That stall though! OMG! Made my palms sweat. 6 kts! Yeowza!
What an awesome plane. Very lucky to have gotten to fly one. You did awesome on your first landing in those conditions!
"wound up!"-good stuff.
Steve! I’ve been watching your videos for quite some time, huge fan. I just wanted to let you know that you have made me want to become a pilot. Steveo, I don't think I've ever seen you so stressed. When you nailed that first landing you could read the relief. Great job!

Best Steveo video yet! It’s bizarre seeing the world’s most chill pilot be so intense on final!
Rock-n-roll! Brought me to mind of my Uncle James Crowley taking me up in his '43 Champ. He was a S.T.O.L. Pilot and didn't even know it! Brandon Airport, 1977.

I was laughing out loud watching your first landing. You worked so hard, and you really nailed it. I am impressed. Good work Sir.
Good work, Steve. Flying a Cub is really pure flying.
Another Awesome video. Thanks you for taking me along for the ride.
One of your best videos to date Steveo... and great handling of a taildragger, especially as it was your first time. Well done
"Flying it to the parking spot"
Nice one.... both of you. Beautiful Countryside.
I've never seen you look so nervous, as you did during run-up....When wheels were up you seem to relax and enjoy....Great flight
Lol Steve you made me laugh! You looked a “little stressed”...such a great way to challenge your comfort level...great video!

this video makes me happy. flight training is so much fun and so humbling. thanks for sharing!
To do list for the weekend: 1. Win lottery 2. Buy Carbon Cub 3. Fly lots
My plan as well.
Sounds like the dream

Wow really nice landing Steve. Especially considering the conditions and your nerves!!! Well done.
Nicely done Stevo, welcome to the world of "Tail Draggers"! You chose a great instructor for STOL flying with Patrick!
W O W, takeoff in 4 potato, tight orbit with little to no forward movement. Whewww what a ride, great job Steveo.
SteveO...that was badass!!! Great job man!
Steveo, Excellent Video!!! Beautiful scenery, Great flying, and an extremely Calm, Confident and Competent instructor, make the most challenging of landings look like a sunset walk on the beach. Way to go Steveo!!!!
Fantastic video of a unique flying experience. And having the beautiful San Juan Islands as a backdrop doesn't hurt.
dude you are a really skilled pilot. that is CRAZY for your first time in a tail dragger in those conditions. I didnt even know you could fly those things in that kind of wind.
That's insanely awesome! I can only imagine what it felt like to pop up off the runway like that. Keep'em coming Steve!
Just great Steve. Your flying is right up there but the quality of video is just getting better and better. Big fan here! Thanks.
Great speaking with you at the AOPA fly-in today. It really helps watching your video and then seeing yourself and the plane in-person to really understand the scope of your films.
Steveo this was so so much fun to watch. Great flying! One of your best vids!
Agreed. That first landing was super fun to watch.

Awesome video. My wife and I love flying up there. Friday Harbor is another airport close to there with a neat town within a short walk.
Looked like you were churning butter, Steveo! Nice job.
HA ha ha , that was perfect. lol
What a great instructor totally instilled confidence great vid steve 👍

Fantastic video. Greatest instructor and a great job with first landing, though I have to admit I broke a sweat watching it all. Keep up good work!
Fun to watch you struggle through it, Steveo. Nice job!
Thanks for making these videos, good balance between fun to watch and educational.. great!

Proper B-roll and solid plot line, Steve... props... what a great video!
Awesome Steveo! Good to see you flying up here in the Great Northwest!

My palms were sweating watching the approach and landing. B-alls of steel, Steveo!
thank you both for sharing a great experience with us all thank all whom put this all together i loved it all please continue to be all of you so we can learn together
Guys, Thank you, I loved it, you made me chuckle and you greased that landing and didn't know it. So cool. Thank you!
Wow, this was the most entertaining video I've ever seen! Amazing skills man. My favorite part was you trying to continue narrating during the landing. I felt the adrenaline from over here.
Thanks Steve O. nice video and nice landing your just a natural stick and rudder guy!
Steve you should have named this video " I wrestled a Carbon Cub". That was insane. Good stuff. Let your fans know when you're coming back to KBOS!
Wow! Great video probably one of my favourites! Have to try it one day. Patrick explains everything so clearly and understanding
Have been watching you for a long time now ... thought you were the "coolest" flyer ... you actually got shook up there , I think I could see the sweat ... Not taking anything away from you , it's amazing what you can turn your hand too ... good pilot man , I would fly with you through hell ;-)
Excellent video Steveo. Hard to believe that was your first tail wheel landing. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
That was some crazy flying ! Fantastic job behind the stick. Looks like a blast to fly. 180 hp at 900 pounds WOW
Great job SteveO! It’s fun to see you experiencing a different kind of flying. You can’t beat that great view either! 👍🏼😎
Loved this one! I only recently found your channel Steveo, but I've been binge watching. Your editing, audio selection and general production values as well as your knowledge and the way you impart that to your audience are truly fantastic. This is a gem of a channel.
Ha Ha! You NAILED it on your first Approach/Landing! Way to go, Steveo!
Wow that is crazy. Nice adjustment S1K.
I really liked how upon his call out instead of using his n numbers he said blue and white cub. Great for identification , less confusion.
I'm hoping to buy a sport carbon cub.
What an awesome vid. You well and truly earned that beer after this flight! As always, thanks for sharing Steveo!
beautiful video, mix of relaxing vistas but also rushes of adrenaline following your landing!
I love on Orcas, and it’s super cool to hear people I know on the com!
Good old stick and rudder flying...great job Steve0!
Whooooa Steve-o my hands were sweating on that landing. Seriously. However, you handled it like a pro. Well done!
I think that was extrordinary you landed your first one under those conditions .. You adapt quickly , means talented seat of the pants pilot , good hand eye foot coordination.. This one was super entertaining BTW .. one of your best videos
Most of my 800-odd hours are on old taildraggers.... they can humble you right quick. Well done man!
Looks like your right arm got a workout there, Steve-O. Awesome video! I thoroughly dug it!!
