I've tried making this landing in Microsoft Flight simulator 2020 and my favorite part of the whole thing Is the 40 other people Also trying to do it at the same time! I think that goes to show how much Impact you have on general aviation, and I thank you for it!
*That was amazing. I know the team knows the risk but most people really can't comprehend the stakes.* This was very risky, but was done safely in the middle of the margins, the very tiny tiny margins. The plane Mike and others modified was brilliant (as usual). The pilot did his job expertly. Winds cooperated (for a few minutes).

Mike, I'm glad that you commit to making parts for safety that you hope you'll never have to use, and that you put as much engineering, enthusiasm, and precision into producing them as you would any other part.
As I watch these videos! We all know how amazing this guy his family and his team are! I wonder what the “RedBull” effect will be? They just went GLOBAL!!
I have to count every gram/milligram for my micro builds, its actually kind of crazy seeing someone do the same thing for an actual full size plane...love it!
Awasome. ~ You have taught the value of only accepting the highest quality in craftsmanship! Your ability to design and foretell the possibilities is priceless. I am 82, and when I was a paratrooper we had a sign above the mess-hall door that said: "The Sky, even more than the Sea, is most unforgiving for even the slightest mistake." RLTW ~ I have gone down in two different helicopter crashes. Thank God I made it. SAFETY is the Key!
Mike, if you ever need an old retired guy to hang out in your hanger/workshop to clean up and keep the place tidy, I'm your man! Just watching you work with all that energy ⚡ emanating from you in the atmosphere, I'm sure, would be beneficial to my health! Bill from Linglestown, Pennsylvania
A lot of safety gone into that design. Like any safety device, you hope it’s never needed but it’s there if you do. I love the Red Bull graphics. The colours are in your face which is obviously what they want. In this case, they did give you wings.👍👍🇨🇦
Your pool is cool and all Mike but its awsome to have you back in the hanger making me smarter. Its kinda crazy to think how much ive learned from a man ive never met, thank you Mike. Back to learning from the master.
Great to see Dax contributing to this EPIC airplane and event. I have noticed in previous videos, and again prominently in this video, a Lancair with the Turbulence name. What is the story with that? Always appreciate all the engineering explanations and demonstrations. Super job!
Mike built Turbulence and raced it in the Sport Air Racing League. It is the fastest single engine turbo prop in the world. We plan to release build videos on it.
I love the look of the wrap! When will we see the Red Bull Luke Czepiela commemorative edition of the HorizonHobby Carbon Cub S2 1,3m? I would love to have Remote ID included so that I'm not confined in a FRIA and can fly it commercially if needed.
Amazing work. Really curious to get an update on the plane you were intending to build after the sale of turbulence. Pressurized xc plane still in the cards?
@@ChandraSlyFoxPatey All of the builds are very entertaining to me. House included. Always great workmanship and inventiveness. When able a general scope on the x/c project would be much appreciated. That fast 2p/4p experimental category is the root of most practical aviation for the common man. Seeing Mike push the boundaries past what turbulence achieved would be quite the exciting watch. Amazing work you guys.
I can’t give you a number’ but I am very certain that the weight was less than painting it. Not only that, but it took far less time to complete. And the results are phenomenal.
Carbon offers high strength with low weight and it is sturdy as well as flexible. Carbon fiber allows for to be lighter and stronger. Kevlar has a high toughness which is useful for things like bullet resistant clothing, but Kevlar fiber has a lower tensile strength than and is heavier than carbon fiber.
I’m not a regular on this channel, but I just learned of this Dubai event on CNN and immediately thought of Draco and Mike - figuring if anyone could design such a plane, it’d have to be him. Go figure!
Yeah I am enjoying Mike Patey's videos a lot more than the news snippets.... the attention to details of the aspects of the build, the details.... the close team of family and close working team that work together on aircraft, and also seeing them building their new home. Have had some seeious medical issues fighting tick bite diseases that flattened me here in Australia. Great to watch such enthusiasm for life and attention to details..... is great to virtually sit in on these adventures while I do my own fight-back & more inspired to dream bigger and be around people who think, and work the same way ..... like Mark's Q&A on the Helipad .... such a great family inspiring get in there and go to that extra effort to improve safety, performance, etc etc...... Great to see the family all involved working together. I expect the family will change the locks on the hanger and drag Mike off on a family holiday somewhere once these major projects are completed. Well deserved and great to share the success doesn't "just happen". Those many extra hours, weeks and years of experience with designing and building something that goes a few more improvement levels is a great ethos and culture to be able to "sit in on" with these video shares.... well done to the entire team. Even those we don't see on camera, but we know the family, friends and workplaces, oh and viseo editor
@@turnitupmike Thank you, and I hope you’re able to get to the bottom of the tick bite. We have them here, they cause Lyme disease and it’s a bugger to deal with. My best to you.
Mike, Bro, I love you too much for you to be using the table saw like that with no pushers, yes you and I have done alot of dangerous shit but don't lose a finger man.
Dex did a great job, but I'd be interested in knowing how much weight you cut out versus how much the wrapping added back. I understand that it was necessary, but it certainly has a penalty and this hasn't been discussed so far. Wrapping inherently means spare performance was available ;).
Mike- for pinholes, use thin C.A. to fill. Quick, light, sandable, easy. Try it, you will like it. Slightly larger imperfections….baking soda and thin C.A.
I feel like Mike has an engineered toilet paper holder. I can see it being a carbon tube with spring loaded magazine so when you remove the empty roll it ejects a new one ready for use.
Awesome project. How much does that "tail bumper" weigh once ready for install? Love the "proud dad" moment and your son did an amazing job on that wrap!
Out of curiosity, once a plane has been modified like this, does it require recertification by the FAA or are there other processes your able to do in house? Thanks so much again. Blessings.
Thanks for the reply, it’s really appreciated. My friend is a huge fan of Mike, since “The bush cowboys”. I would have like to take a picture with him and send it to my friend in Canada. Well maybe another time. Take care!
On your carbon lay-ups. Have you thought of borrowing a technique from aeromodelling where we use vacuum-bags to squeeze the job into shape? It works amazingly to produce a compressed carbon layer structure and reduces air pockets. It also squeezes out excess resin to reduce overall weight. I use a Sous-vide vac-sealer for small parts and it works a treat!
Mike vacuum bags most of the carbon parts he does, are you talking about some sort of special vacuum process? I'd say he didn't use it here because he didn't want pin holes
Mike used vacuum bags lots of times in previous videos. Pretty sure the fact he didn't have a mold because of making the part in situ was taken into consideration when deciding on what technique to use here.
Do you know about how much weight the vinyl wrap adds? I know you were really hunting for ounces to remove, and of course it is sort of a necessity for marketing purposes, but would it make a noticeable difference versus an unwrapped plane? Keep up the awesome work. Love your videos.
Aren't you just adding to the overall weight of the aircraft this makes center of gravity of the plane different then original specs. Meaning that flying is going to be way different then flying a stock version because of added weight and change of aerodynamics. Glad I stumbled on the channel, great work my friend
The airplane both lost and added weight.... I am sure that Mike will keep this airplane within limits of CG... He didn't show it but it probably got a fresh weight and balance.

That cub bumper would probably be a decent product to sell.
I wonder how much of this Carbon Cub is going to implement in the future.
Hey RedBull! You thought it was better to have Mike release these videos after the stunt - incorrect! The hype buildup would have been favorable!
Absolutely. Marketing departments don't always get things right. I suppose they were worried if someone got killed?
