Im not familiar with all the different methods of shiny hunting. I was using the sos method to find a female salandit, but I think I just got lucky. It took maybe 10 minutes for the female to show up, so I found my shiny in less than 10 minutes, but again I think that was just luck of the draw.

Kayketsu it takes time, mine took about 6 hours in total to get a shony mimikyu, so just save before hunting for one so you can still have pp and reset if you dont have any moves left

This method is... difficult to use for sandygast... mega drain to heal, sand tomb to trap, bulldoze hurts reinforcements, and sand attack for blindness on all wild encounters, and a ghost typing it make false swipe not work regularly. Been trying for 14 hours... still no lick
Miles Hikari Use trumbeak or fearow with the ability keen eye to prevent accuracy from lowering. You'll be immune to sand tomb and astonish and mega drain won't hurt as much. I used fearow and managed to get a shiny sandygast in 75 encounters.
Melvin Li That is literally what I've been doing, I brought in two keen eye toucannons with flame charge, drill peck, thief, and beak blast. I used flame charge to weaken them too red and then blasted the others away with the other three moves. I literally ran out of PP on both pokemon, and the Shiinotic I brought as back up ran out of PP as wll. I tried several times. Literally spent all day last sunday just commiting Genocide on the sandygast species. Like I almost almost convinced my toucannon now has a god complex thinking that all must lay at her feet or die after how many she has killed. I began at 11 AM that morning, and went till 3 AM the next day, with small breaks in between. I could not for the life of me get that damnable black castle
I found a shiny Metapod on day one as one of the first pokemon I encountered. I caught it (of course) and the Butterfree now stays on my team and actually puts in a bit of work.
Nice, Butterfree holds a special place in my heart from a long time ago. People really underestimate it, but it does put it quite a bit of work. On my playthrough, I was running around from a pokemon burrowing around on the surface and then it eventually caught up to me and it turned out to be a shiny Dugtrio.

There's one other factor you should mention. For ghost types, either use the Move Relearner to get the Mystery Gift Munchlax to learn Odor Sleuth before it evolves or use HA Pancham/Pangoro
When hunting for a shiny Pokémon, I would recommend using “substitute” because some Pokémon can use attacks that can give lots of damage, lower accuracy, and etc. This really helped when it came for hunting for a Shiny Eevee.. (Which I still fail to find because I keep running out of Leppa Berries) but having more Pokémon sounds like a good idea. This is smart, thanks for the. Guide! 😃😄

@@Rammus0K Yes... because we can read the description of enemy Pokemon attacks during battle. The reason I posted this was because of Nightmare Encounters with Shiny Pokemon from Gen 2. Heck, even the description of it states "In the wild, the battle ends." after the attack buff/update.
For people who obviously don't know what they are talking about -There is no chain -Odds are 1/512 but it is still being tested -It does not matter which pokemon you kill

James Burrow it's a fixed chance eg 1/416 that doesn't mean that if you KO 416 Pokemon the next one will be shiny it means that it is statistically likely that you will have found a shiny by then. But every new Pokemon still has that 1/416 chance of being shiny. The odds don't get any better.(1/416 is not the actual value I just made it up so my pint makes more sense.)
DGORyan - Gaming I agree. I think the odds are set like with the DexNav. I caught 2 shinys using the SOS method (both over 500 encounters). Odds are probably about 1/1000 each time it calls for help.
Just something to take into consideration: this method is MUCH trickier to pull off if you are shiny farming Beldum... the fact that their only move is Take Down is a huge pain... Basically, the only way I've found to be able to SOS chain Beldum is to use an Alolan Marowak, which can learn false swipe, and is part ghost, so Take Down doesn't effect it, and therefore, doesn't cause recoil damage to the Beldum
Thomas Junker Only Shiny I've ever caught is Beldum in pokemon emerald. every other shiny has either run away or killed it's self. Had 2 shiny abras teleport(1 in sapphire and 1 in fire red), and shiny graveler self destruct in pokemon pearl.
He never said you could get a shiny litten. I think he just put a random shiny in the thumbnail. You should already know that you can't find littens in the grass.
The Obsidian Pickaxe There's a little chaining involved, but not for Shinies. For IVs once you hit a chain of 40 you're guaranteed 4IV pokemon, but it's still the same chance for a shiny
Game freak has said that transferring from an older gen to gen 7 is a one-way transfer. Shouldn't be a shock, since it was exactly the same way in gen 4, 5, AND 6. All one-way transfers. Only gen 1 & 2 can trade back and forth.

I've also found that they will call for help and sometimes the evolved form will appear, had this while shiny hinting eevee and bagon.....but no shinys yet 😟

My first shiny was a zubat :( I got it today :) I actually just found it in a cave while trying to complete the story. I did not use any method, it just suddenly came while exploring. Lol
Well it's still annoying. To my knowledge, HAs don't start showing up until a chain of around 40. That takes about 50 minutes. In ORAS, you could get the HA in a few minutes without needing to chain at all. It's a decent mechanic for Shiny hunting, but I hate that HAs are locked behind it.
What if you accidentally (due to Pikachu's static) paralyzed the pokemon? would you suggest just trying again or keep waiting until its not paralyzed (if that can happen)
I used this method for like 3 hours straight but got tired and ran from battle and tried walking out of the patch of grass to save my game and OFCOURSE encountered a random shiny caterpie ... Additional tips- TURN OF BATTLE ANIMATIONS! It makes things SO much faster in the long run. Get an ton of Leppa berries. You can farm them using the Poke Pelago. If you end up on a longer hunt you WILL run out of PP. It happened to me, and I was forced to end a 200+ long Pichu chain.
Some Tips: -Wild Pokemon can call for help at any amount of HP so you don't have to alternate between knocking out the older encounters. -Grow some Leppa Berries in Pokemon Pelago. They'll allow you to never run out of PP. -Pack a 'mon that has weak moves and lots of PP. You can teach them moves like Work Up and Thundershock to maximize your efficiency. -A Pokemon with a move like Recover or Roost will save you money on potions so if it's an option you should probably pack it. -If you want to attempt to get a Pokemon of a certain nature be sure to have a Pokemon with Synchronize out that also has that nature when wild Pokemon appear to increase your chances of finding what you want. (Though the only 'mon that can have both Synchronize and False Swipe is Mew so if you happen to have one somehow then you're in luck. Otherwise you'll have to keep switching before you knock one of your encounters out.) This method actually does increase your odds of getting a shiny Pokemon. Many people find them after 70 encounters or so. I found my Araquanid in less than that. The best thing that came out of this gen's shiny chaining is that by the time you'll encounter a shiny they will have a good amount of perfect IV's to work with.
I just found on Serebii that shiny midday Lycanroc is dark blue instead of brown. I needs it. I'll probably try this one of these days to try and get one.

Arekkz I've tested this method if ur pokemon ur shiny hunting for struggles and the battle ends u can come back to the same pokemon hours or minutes later and it doesn't break your chain
Zachary Harper it isn't really a chain. You're just eliminating numbers out of the odds when you kill them. The chance of you finding a shiny in the wild is 1/4000 and just because you're killing wild Pokémon doesn't necessarily mean you're chaining, it just means you're getting closer to that number ex 1/3999 , 1/3998 , 1/3997 and so on. As a said, it just feels like you're chaining cause there are vastly greater odds for getting a shiny. Also, chains almost guarantee a shiny after a certain point, but I've seen plenty of people get their shinies at 30, 40, 100, and even 900 encounters

You could also use an antidote if your pokemon has no status condition because it'll say it has no effect and still use a turn, you also keep the antidote too

I have a Smeargle trained for Shiny farming, he knows: False Swipe, Recover, Swift, and Recycle. His item is a Leppa Berry. With a high enough level he can one shot with swift and has unlimited PP thanks to Recycle with a Leppa Berry. I hope this helps.

I would also add that its recommended to switch into a team of pokemon with the synchronize ability w/ the nature you want, so you have a 50% chance of the shiny pokemon to have that nature upon capture.
In order to do this chaining in mudbray, I've noticed that they use a move that will knock out a low HP one (a move that hits everything) so what would be a counter to this? So I don't end up losing both by knocking out the one that knocks out the other?
True you can, but then you waste the PP on that move, and depending on how long it takes you might need that later on :) Also the items aren't used up, so you're not actually wasting them, it just uses up a turn.

Not sure if anyone commented this, but if a Pokemon you're using has Intimidate, Pressure, or Unnerve, it further increases the chances of a wild Pokemon calling for help. Pressure is arguably the least useful since it means wild Pokemon are more likely to Struggle-kill themselves.
Ok... But what about help that ISN'T the exact same Pokemon? I'm trying the method out on a Pichu right now, but in addition to other Pichu, it can call in Pikachu and even Happiny occasionally. Does that break the chain at all?

2 and a half hours isnt that long realy, for a shiny pokemon? This used to be days, if not weeks of contantly encountering pokemon with repels and whatnot. 2-3 hours is next to nothing in time in pokemon.
I got shiny rockruff at 96 encounters, and shiny pikipek at 42 encounters. When hunting for rockruff I would recommend that you use a Pokémon with the ability keen eye so all rockruffs sand attacks won't affect you

Yo guys. Just want to add that this method really works. I just got the shiny Pokemon I long for the most--Sandygast. It took me 7 hours to look for it but it was all worth it. I had a bunch of Leppas with me. I started 2pm in the afternoon and I found my Sandygast at 9:13pm. I used my Tapu Lele, and by the time I had the shiny, her Def EVs were already maxed out--without a power item. It just takes time. But you will eventually get your shiny.

I finally caught it today
it even had its hidden ability, and I think 4 perfect IVs. It took five days to find though

pretty cool seeing some early sos shiny sources, i love sos hunting, managed to pull off 22 shinies in one month with the method

The reason I posted this was because of Nightmare Encounters with Shiny Pokemon from Gen 2.
Heck, even the description of it states "In the wild, the battle ends." after the attack buff/update.

AqUa iGamer wrong. Your odds increase to 1/1026 after 70 SOS encounters. They are still 1/4096 until then. It’s been confirmed.

There is actually no chain involved. The chances of the Pokemon being shiny are the same regardless of how many times it calls in help.

James Burrow it's a fixed chance eg 1/416 that doesn't mean that if you KO 416 Pokemon the next one will be shiny it means that it is statistically likely that you will have found a shiny by then. But every new Pokemon still has that 1/416 chance of being shiny. The odds don't get any better.(1/416 is not the actual value I just made it up so my pint makes more sense.)

Just something to take into consideration: this method is MUCH trickier to pull off if you are shiny farming Beldum... the fact that their only move is Take Down is a huge pain...
Basically, the only way I've found to be able to SOS chain Beldum is to use an Alolan Marowak, which can learn false swipe, and is part ghost, so Take Down doesn't effect it, and therefore, doesn't cause recoil damage to the Beldum

Game freak has said that transferring from an older gen to gen 7 is a one-way transfer. Shouldn't be a shock, since it was exactly the same way in gen 4, 5, AND 6. All one-way transfers. Only gen 1 & 2 can trade back and forth.

Well it's still annoying. To my knowledge, HAs don't start showing up until a chain of around 40. That takes about 50 minutes. In ORAS, you could get the HA in a few minutes without needing to chain at all. It's a decent mechanic for Shiny hunting, but I hate that HAs are locked behind it.

I used this method for like 3 hours straight but got tired and ran from battle and tried walking out of the patch of grass to save my game and OFCOURSE encountered a random shiny caterpie ... It doesn't matter if you "break your chain" since there is no chain. The chances of a shiny never change, so there's no point in calling it a chain.
Additional tips-
TURN OF BATTLE ANIMATIONS! It makes things SO much faster in the long run.
Get an ton of Leppa berries. You can farm them using the Poke Pelago. If you end up on a longer hunt you WILL run out of PP. It happened to me, and I was forced to end a 200+ long Pichu chain.
Some Tips:
-Wild Pokemon can call for help at any amount of HP so you don't have to alternate between knocking out the older encounters.
-Grow some Leppa Berries in Pokemon Pelago. They'll allow you to never run out of PP.
-Pack a 'mon that has weak moves and lots of PP. You can teach them moves like Work Up and Thundershock to maximize your efficiency.
-A Pokemon with a move like Recover or Roost will save you money on potions so if it's an option you should probably pack it.
-If you want to attempt to get a Pokemon of a certain nature be sure to have a Pokemon with Synchronize out that also has that nature when wild Pokemon appear to increase your chances of finding what you want. (Though the only 'mon that can have both Synchronize and False Swipe is Mew so if you happen to have one somehow then you're in luck. Otherwise you'll have to keep switching before you knock one of your encounters out.)
This method actually does increase your odds of getting a shiny Pokemon. Many people find them after 70 encounters or so. I found my Araquanid in less than that. The best thing that came out of this gen's shiny chaining is that by the time you'll encounter a shiny they will have a good amount of perfect IV's to work with.
I just found on Serebii that shiny midday Lycanroc is dark blue instead of brown. I needs it. I'll probably try this one of these days to try and get one.

Zachary Harper it isn't really a chain. You're just eliminating numbers out of the odds when you kill them. The chance of you finding a shiny in the wild is 1/4000 and just because you're killing wild Pokémon doesn't necessarily mean you're chaining, it just means you're getting closer to that number ex 1/3999 , 1/3998 , 1/3997 and so on. As a said, it just feels like you're chaining cause there are vastly greater odds for getting a shiny. Also, chains almost guarantee a shiny after a certain point, but I've seen plenty of people get their shinies at 30, 40, 100, and even 900 encounters

You could also use an antidote if your pokemon has no status condition because it'll say it has no effect and still use a turn, you also keep the antidote too

The chain is just for IV really. The shiny encounter rate doesn't change at all. Guaranteed 4 max IV after a chain of 30-40 I think.

I have a Smeargle trained for Shiny farming, he knows: False Swipe, Recover, Swift, and Recycle. His item is a Leppa Berry. With a high enough level he can one shot with swift and has unlimited PP thanks to Recycle with a Leppa Berry. I hope this helps.

I would also add that its recommended to switch into a team of pokemon with the synchronize ability w/ the nature you want, so you have a 50% chance of the shiny pokemon to have that nature upon capture.
In order to do this chaining in mudbray, I've noticed that they use a move that will knock out a low HP one (a move that hits everything) so what would be a counter to this? So I don't end up losing both by knocking out the one that knocks out the other?

True you can, but then you waste the PP on that move, and depending on how long it takes you might need that later on :) Also the items aren't used up, so you're not actually wasting them, it just uses up a turn.

Not sure if anyone commented this, but if a Pokemon you're using has Intimidate, Pressure, or Unnerve, it further increases the chances of a wild Pokemon calling for help. Pressure is arguably the least useful since it means wild Pokemon are more likely to Struggle-kill themselves.
Ok... But what about help that ISN'T the exact same Pokemon? I'm trying the method out on a Pichu right now, but in addition to other Pichu, it can call in Pikachu and even Happiny occasionally. Does that break the chain at all?

I got shiny rockruff at 96 encounters, and shiny pikipek at 42 encounters. When hunting for rockruff I would recommend that you use a Pokémon with the ability keen eye so all rockruffs sand attacks won't affect you

Yo guys. Just want to add that this method really works. I just got the shiny Pokemon I long for the most--Sandygast. It took me 7 hours to look for it but it was all worth it. I had a bunch of Leppas with me. I started 2pm in the afternoon and I found my Sandygast at 9:13pm. I used my Tapu Lele, and by the time I had the shiny, her Def EVs were already maxed out--without a power item. It just takes time. But you will eventually get your shiny.
