This version of Shredder is so badass looking. Great costume. Also the original movie had a strong anti-gang message in it which reflected the real problems that many American cities faced at the time that this film was made.
This is why I like this Shredder compared to the new movie's version. The new version was just someone helping a corporation be super rich. I give the new one credit for giving an intimidating Shredder up until he's actually in the Transformers suit. But for this Shredder, I saw this one as being someone who's corrupting the youth, giving them a place to call home and making himself their "father" and in return they learn the art of invisibility and become apart of the Foot Clan and they can steal and do whatever they want.
***** What's to say the kid gang isn't gonna be Shredder's back up plan in the new one? People forget that in the original comics Oroku Saki didn't take the turtles too seriously in a fight until they and Splinter bested them. He didn't have to do jack shit for a while, because before the turtles arrived, there was no one that could stop the foot. In doing so, he gains power over New Yorkers through fear of the unknown and the theft of their future.

The Shredder in this film is one of the main things that made this movie so unforgettable. He was not the more clownish and one-liner spouting Shredder of the cartoon. He was a threatening Samurai warrior who ruled the Foot with an iron fist. He was a sadistic killer who murdered-not framed- both Hamato Yoshi and Tang Shen in cold blood. He was a manipulative monster who poisoned the minds of young teenagers who were already ostracized to steal for him, and punished them with violence if they failed. He kidnapped Splinter and hung him helplessly from the wall, torturing him to get information about the turtles. It’s that seriousness that really makes this film great, the humor perfectly balanced with the darker moments. They just don’t make then like this anymore.
New movies don't have the balls to dedicate this kind of entrance to a character anymore. Almost a full two minutes before he even utters his first words. It gives you time to develop an unforced understanding of the character. I also love how they didn't try to get a ripped body builder to play Shredder.

Shredder, the ultimate villain. Fluent in the hidden arts of Ninjitsu, leader of the Footclan. Shredder would've defeated everyone had it not been for his pride. He did in-fact defeat all four of the Turtles. That's four against one, and he beat them.
@Capri And they didn't really beat him in the second movie he sort of killed himself while trying to take the Turtles down with him. So... Sorry dudes can't take points for that battle give them a B+ For Badass effort though.
@King Kong Not really, in the fight the fight Shredder is slowly getting overwhelmed and with his experience he knows it and changes tactics. He uses a psychological attack that gets Leo to screw up and seizes on the opportunity to trick the others into weakening themselves and is about to shrink the numbers gap. If the fight had just kept going on how it had before that he would of eventually lost.
@@Warcodered01 even with Leo at the point of his spear, didn’t Shredder state the Mikey, Donny, and Raph could’ve overwhelmed him at the cost of perhaps one?
A perfect demonstration that you don't need 500lb CGI behemoths to deliver an intimidating Shredder. Just great lighting, music, cinematography and design.
DOOMVSHALO I believe this film stays with us because of how young people can either be mentored or misled. Danny is really the character that has the biggest arc because his father doesn't understand or is indifferent to his inner turmoil. So Danny seeks out a charismatic father figure whom misleads all of his followers: the Shredder. But when he meets the captured mentor Splinter: he begins to lead back to a path inner peace and reconciliation with his father. "The Karate Kid" (1984) has a similar dynamic: the mentor (Myagi) and the misleader (Reese)..
***** Charm, yes: Dramatic structure, believability, and solid plot, no. Compare to Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Ben Hur, Empire Strikes Back, Jurassic Park, or the Dark Knight Rises - those are great movies. If all you ever watch is Michael Bay, then all you'll ever see will disappoint you.
I'd say Skeletor as well. Masters of the Universe. He didn't play at all and killed one of his warriors for failure. Sarod definitely took one for the team!
Holding a company meeting so that he can publicly recognize a loyal employee and give him a promotion followed up by a motivational speech. Such a great boss!
This was a MUCH different Turtles compared to the cartoon we were used to watching back then. It was dark and gritty but also humorous when it needed to be.
Bay's Shredder is nowhere near the vibe the 1990 Shredder's at when he walks into the room. The scariest part is when Danny says "Master", receiving Shredders undivided attention; when that happens you best have something important to say. His badass demeanor is no joke.
"Money cannot buy the honor which you have earned tonight. You'll make us all proud. Only effort, discipline, loyalty, earn the right to wear the Dragon dogi. You're all here because the outside world rejects you. This is your family. I am your father. I want you all to become full members of the Foot."
"There is a new enemy, freaks of nature, who interfere with our business! You are my eyes and ears, find them! Together we will punish these.... Creatures.... These..... Turtles!!!" "Master..." This movie = my childhood
Back in 2001 or 2002, I was watching this movie while my dog was outside. I had the windows open and my dog could hear the movie. He started growl and howl during this scene as soon as Shredder started to speak. This movie was just different, man.
+joshua hill Man what!!!!! Lol I was thinking the same... sheeeeiit, so I guess if you're black, male, and not a professional athlete/entertainer then you get first dibs at joining lmao. Shredder is a badass in this movie though..excellent scene.
@Josh Avitia Bruh that's cool and all but Shredder would never reject you and give you purpose. Plus you will look like a badass ninja serving the damn Shredder.
Seeing the power he holds over those kids is even more terrifying now that I am an adult. And it reminds me of the rampant urban decay of the time this movie came out, which was a very real problem affecting kids in those days. So yeah this hits home...still.
He is the ultimate villain, literally defeats all four of the turtles single handedly, then challenges their master to be brought down by his desire for revenge.
This scene right here shows that it is not the suit that makes shredder badass but the attitude! His eyes as he is talking look very threatening compared to that robotic crap from Micheal Bays movie.
Nicholas Mallard The mecha suit was designed so he was able to take on the turtles because they are stronger so he needed his armour to be stronger and for the 200th time it is not Michael Bays movie how many trailers have been out to tell you this small fact it is not his movie get it through your head he was 1 of 6 producers not the director.
Vince Brown Didn't I just say to you in another comment section on this video that Micheal Bay was the producer for this film. The movie was garbage in my opinion and it reeks of Bay's BS!
Vince Brown My 90s shredder is powerful comment section in which I replied to you after you called me a hater. Your right everyone is entitled to have an opinion just like we discussed in that comment section. You like this movie I don't.
It's cool how they portrayed the shredder as a gang leader/crime boss in this movie. The fact that this movie was set in a realistic world made this movie so unique and an all-time favorite of mine
I love the gritty look of this movie. It reminds me of The warriors or Escape from New York. The long shadow that The Shredder casts that slowly gets smaller when he gets closer to the spot light, and the camera that rotates to behind the back, and the subtle guitar riffs that play. This movie is very 1980's in its presentation. It was filmed in 1989.
It looks like a city based film. Every film nowadays make any city film look like some utopian glossy world. Oh a garbage bag in an alley. NOPE. Sewers, pipes. Especially in the "skid row" places C'MON. That needs to be the look BROUGHT BACK!
The dark scenography, the music, the voice, the acting itself, the light putted on the Shredder making him a central point on stage... Everything is so well done that you simply cannot to not fear this intimidating character.
This is the Shredder from the original comics before they made him into a cartoonish villain. Just this scene alone. Even the rooftop battle at the end is too short for me. The original Shredder is a real bastard but they'll never depict him now the way he should be. By the sequel he was surrounded by goofy monster henchmen and the foot were total clowns, not fearsome ninja's.
They need to retcon the movies after this and do a sequel that follows the same tone, cinematography, music score, actual martial arts stunts and choreography, detailed costumes ect. Its 2020 and it still lives up to this day.
Between frank langella as skeletor and James Saito here, these are the absolute case studies for how to adapt a cartoon villain. THIS is the shredder as he was always supposed to be

Of all the years I have been watching the original Ninja Turtles cartoon as a kid, I didn't know until I got the DVD collection, that James Avery was the father/uncle in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I couldn't believe it.
scottjulie27
I didn't know that, either. And tonight he'll dine on turtle soup...with pillowy mounds of mashed potatoes!
30 years later, this still gives me the chills
When it comes to live action villains they did this one justice!
This story was ahead of it'd time because of its violent tone wish it was given another chance
Plot twist: The kid with his hand raised just wanted to know where the restroom was.
Idiot...
Danny
Hahaha this killed me XD
He already shat himself when Shredder entered, so just needs a wipe down and change of underwear.
there's a bathroom on the right!
One of the most iconic Entrances in Movie History
Agreed The Music At The Start is So Amazing For Shredder!
Even Vader?
the entrance music is beast
Daniel Sifuentes-Bradford agreed, all those troubled youth are scared to death of him.
Hell yeah
It's got the same opening beats as "Raining Blood"
@@SDPLISSKEN81 FINALLY!! Someone else hears this. I wish I had the patience to learn how to mix cause I can hear a mash-up of Shredder's Theme and Raining Blood in my brain.
Entrance music 😄 that did make me chuckle
2:13 The Shredder as Darth Vader in the movie
This movie didn’t have to go as hard as it did but I’m so thankful for it. Amazing soundtrack. Great writing. And the voice acting for 1990s is top notch.
I remember when I was a kid, & first saw this movie all I could think of is "Gosh, i'd give anything to have the Shredder helmet!!!"
TheOldOakSyndicate I still want this shredder helmet, anywhere that you can buy it?
BonesInteractive I'd find someone who makes swords and armour for cosplay.
@@DougyFreshGames their is 3d printing .
I want to buy it
I'll bet it never has to look for a can opener! 😉
That glint from his helmet as he turns around to that music... Still so perfect.
Bailey Matheson They captured Shredder beautifully in this film
Shredder, the ultimate villain. Fluent in the hidden arts of Ninjitsu, leader of the Footclan. Shredder would've defeated everyone had it not been for his pride. He did in-fact defeat all four of the Turtles. That's four against one, and he beat them.
if only the turtles worked together instead of one by one they would have a chance
Regardless of what would of happened that fight scene was pretty much perfectly done with Splinter using the same tactic that Shredder had just used
@@Warcodered01 even with Leo at the point of his spear, didn’t Shredder state the Mikey, Donny, and Raph could’ve overwhelmed him at the cost of perhaps one?
A perfect demonstration that you don't need 500lb CGI behemoths to deliver an intimidating Shredder. Just great lighting, music, cinematography and design.
Still the best Shredder in TMNT
One of the best villain entrances
Amazing how a 24 year old TMNT film is still million times better than Michael Bays failed attempt.
I watched this film again today, but on Blu-Ray (for the first time) and with a cousin. She ended up liking it better than the 2014 Bay Turtles.
Ragitsu You sir deserve a medal.lol
DOOMVSHALO
We have to keep the past alive by sharing it. That's all there is to it.
Ragitsu Yep keeping the past alive is good.
So well done. You don't see shit like this anymore in movies.
+youtubasoarus do you know that plot twist in this movie? shredder gets suffocated then comes back like no shit happened
+An0nym0us that's the plot twist of the second movie.
Brewsic oh yeah thx for remindin XD
+youtubasoarus Or the rest of this movie. This movie really sucks as a whole, but my inner child won't let me speak such blasphemy.
*****
Charm, yes: Dramatic structure, believability, and solid plot, no.
Compare to Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Ben Hur, Empire Strikes Back, Jurassic Park, or the Dark Knight Rises - those are great movies. If all you ever watch is Michael Bay, then all you'll ever see will disappoint you.
Who Agrees That The Shredder is The Best Live Action Villain Ever at #1?
na T1000 is
Vince Niederman Darth Vader, without any question.
I'd say Skeletor as well. Masters of the Universe. He didn't play at all and killed one of his warriors for failure. Sarod definitely took one for the team!
ALWAYS been my favorite bad guy. Always will
He's the best because he won.. he beat the stars of the show, it took a luck of the draw and another person to win
My grown ass still getting them chills when he speaks. Everything was perfect about this scene.
Holding a company meeting so that he can publicly recognize a loyal employee and give him a promotion followed up by a motivational speech. Such a great boss!
I saw this in the theater as a kid. I remember thinking Shredder had taken a level in badass compared to the cartoon!
He took a level in badass in the first film and he took another one in the 2003 cartoon.
And the 2013 series too
This was a MUCH different Turtles compared to the cartoon we were used to watching back then. It was dark and gritty but also humorous when it needed to be.
it was a good mix of the OG comics and the TV series
This was my first theater film at 6 years old. Still holds up too.
Bay's Shredder is nowhere near the vibe the 1990 Shredder's at when he walks into the room.
The scariest part is when Danny says "Master", receiving Shredders undivided attention; when that happens you best have something important to say. His badass demeanor is no joke.
ruclips.net/video/SvMCLuRIYhw/видео.html shredder great quotes
Daaaam,
The Dark Theme, the Badass Score, and one of the most iconic Villain entrances in film of all TIME!!
Ive always loved tutrles especially when i was younger. This movie just confirmed that everyone else does to. Classic film
Iconic scene
This scared me as a child. I thought the shredder was real lol. Good times.
He is
One of the most underrated scenes in the history of cinema.
Best TMNT film ever made!
To this day this is still the best shredder ever
"Money cannot buy the honor which you have earned tonight. You'll make us all proud. Only effort, discipline, loyalty, earn the right to wear the Dragon dogi. You're all here because the outside world rejects you. This is your family. I am your father. I want you all to become full members of the Foot."
Da foot.
Da futbol
One Of The Best Villain Intros and The Cinematography is Perfect in This Scene Bar None For The Dark Tone At Times For The Film!
Absolutely perfect scene
Amazingly epic!
Ok
God...Shredder was such a badass in this movie.
DarkSnake153 He Was He Was The Best Villian In This Movie 👍👍
"There is a new enemy, freaks of nature, who interfere with our business! You are my eyes and ears, find them! Together we will punish these.... Creatures.... These..... Turtles!!!" "Master..."
This movie = my childhood
33 years later and this movie still holds up
Back in 2001 or 2002, I was watching this movie while my dog was outside. I had the windows open and my dog could hear the movie. He started growl and howl during this scene as soon as Shredder started to speak. This movie was just different, man.
made me kinda wanna join shredders army because the outside world does reject me!
+joshua hill Man what!!!!! Lol I was thinking the same... sheeeeiit, so I guess if you're black, male, and not a professional athlete/entertainer then you get first dibs at joining lmao. Shredder is a badass in this movie though..excellent scene.
He didn't discriminate, as long as you would fight and steal for him. The 1st ninja civil rights leader😂😂😂😂
I still would join the foot
@Josh Avitia Bruh that's cool and all but Shredder would never reject you and give you purpose. Plus you will look like a badass ninja serving the damn Shredder.
Casey Jones: "Is this your family?"
Seeing the power he holds over those kids is even more terrifying now that I am an adult. And it reminds me of the rampant urban decay of the time this movie came out, which was a very real problem affecting kids in those days. So yeah this hits home...still.
Man he was such a badass in this movie. Give me this shredder all day.
The lighting in this movie was incredible.
As a now 37 year old grown man, I shiver as I watch this...
This was one of the best shots I've ever seen shot for a movie
Completely agree
Vanilla Beam Me Too 👍👍❤️
sabresguy93 Same Here
RIP Uncle Phil
tvu86 not the same voice actor here but I feel u..
A funny thing though, in Germany they used the same voice actor for this Shredder and Uncle Phil.
So pretty much Shredder was out there turning punk kids into real ninjas in New York.
Never saw this is theaters, but I can imagine how chilling this scene was in a theater in 1990.
Dead silent theater, the drums echoed with the reverbs of the guitar: It shook the theater in 1990.
No other shredder can beat this original shredder
He is the ultimate villain, literally defeats all four of the turtles single handedly, then challenges their master to be brought down by his desire for revenge.
But the one who can 🛑 is Splinter
You must be deaf.
" _Fools. Ha, ha. The three of you may have overpowered me with the loss of but one! Now your fate... will be HIS!_ "
24 years later still as bad ass... there is no way the new Shredder aka TransfoShredder... could beat this.
Nicholas Mallard Thats your opinion I like the new shredder better and what other comment.
The cinematographer deserved an award he took full advantage and made shredder look convincing
Life is boring .... time to start my own ninja mafia !!!
Hello fellow Sam and Fuzzy fan!
Or in correct term, the yakuza ninja clan
Shredder doesn't get enough praises for being one of the best villains all time.
Love the OG TMNT trilogy but the first one still holds up very well 33 years later
This commands more respect, than all the super and CGI shredders combined.
I was born in 1990, like the movie, and this scene terrified me as a kid.
This part still gives me chills. Chills.
To me, it's this scene that I always look back on that effectively introduces the villain.
Chills.
YES! You're right...this is the gold standard for introducing a villain...
That long shadow....terrifying...
He was scary in both films cause of his voice .
ruclips.net/video/SvMCLuRIYhw/видео.html shredder great quotes......
Or is he the hero?
The dark scenography, the music, the voice, the acting itself, the light putted on the Shredder making him a central point on stage... Everything is so well done that you simply cannot to not fear this intimidating character.
James Saito is only 64. Bring him back as Shredder. Together we will punish these creatures...these turtles!
2:46 - Shredder is such a threat that it plays an orchestra sting when one of his subordinates merely gets his attention.
Honestly not even the original comic book Shredder was as badass as this
I'll never forget how epic it felt when 5 year old me saw this film for the first time in 1990. Good times.
Word that shit was tight. Miss the 90's.
They need to retcon the movies after this and do a sequel that follows the same tone, cinematography, music score, actual martial arts stunts and choreography, detailed costumes ect. Its 2020 and it still lives up to this day.
To me, nothing will ever top this one. Nothing.
Between frank langella as skeletor and James Saito here, these are the absolute case studies for how to adapt a cartoon villain. THIS is the shredder as he was always supposed to be
There was a He-Man movie? And with a decent villain?
@@OlJackBurton my friend Jack, i sincerely endorse you seeking out masters of the universe the movie. It is a product that can only have come from the late 80s. Bring popcorn.
@@OlJackBurton Yes and an actor by the name of Dolph Lundgren was perfect as He-man. Another by the name of Frank Langella, just like James Saito here, took a villain that was a comic relief in the cartoon and made him scary as shit.
@@OlJackBurton oh yes, crap story, but AMAZING Skeletor. seriously look up his speech.
