The way they both kept having to adjust and learn during the fight as they realised just how skilled each other were was great to watch. Batman dodges Shredder's basic strikes, so he gets more aggressive. Batman responds with gadgets and grapples, so Shredder closes the distance even faster. Batman carefully watches how he strikes with the blades and gets an angle to cut them off. All so good
I especially like how Shredder resorts to efficient, effective blows after his claws are broken. He only lands a couple major hits toward the end, but both the throat jab and chest blow were clearly intended to be as effective as possible to take Batman out before he could gain the advantage from his being unarmed.
@@pocketmonster1088Also notice... Batman controlled the distance as the faster one... But shredder changed his range and aimed for soft spots at the end with that knife hand. Elbows and punched to the stomach and chest not effective because your enemy is trained and well tensed? lets see the fucker tense their throat up.
I like how batman lost mainly because he underestimated shredder's disipline and nerve. Batman's biggest weapon is fear. For as skilled as he is (and he is pretty damned skilled), he specifically became a bat and take on a serious and deadpan persona to indice fear onto his opponents. Makes sense he would eventually grow over reliant on fear and give confident and disiplined opponents who don't scare easily an opening.
Also it helps that Shredder has faced a fighter like Batman before, Batman being trained by ninjas and actively use their techniques Shredder would look past the smoke and mirrors of Batman’s tactics and take him out (albeit, with Batman giving him a good fight)
One thing that makes me laugh about this movie is that Batman, a guy whose life is largely devoted to fighting organized crime and secret societies, is apparently unaware of the existence of the Foot Clan, and Shredder apparently came to do crime in Gotham without knowing that the city is protected by a world-famous hero. Obviously the story wouldn't work as well and we wouldn't get awesome scenes like this one if they were all aware of each other beforehand, but it's still pretty funny.
@@FlatPlutoSociety Its actually really simple, Shredder is not the kind of guy that wach TV, neither the kind of villain that appears in It much if even sometime did it. So this could totally happen.
Cool fact: in the follow up story to the comic this movie is based off of, Batman is forced to release the Shredder from prison to help him and the Turtles defeat Bane, who has taken over the Foot Clan. Shredder agrees to go back to prison after helping them on one condition: he and Batman face off one on one, in one last fight, before he helps them defeat Bane. They never say who wins, but it really demonstrates just how much respect Shredder has for Batman as a warrior.
I love how Shredder is like an actual ninja rather than a goofy 80s villain of the week that superficially resembles a ninja. He kills the Foot Clan member from the shadows before Batman got too much info. He immediately tries to leave before being stopped by Batman. He never once reveals who he is or what his motives are. Once Batman started getting the upper hand, he resorted to debilitating moves in order to escape without being pursued.
@@Hamilton-The-Unstoppable. again, I never stated why he was leaving in my original comment, just that he was. Plus, there can be more reasons to one action. I don't doubt he was leaving to report to Ras', but he was also leaving to avoid confrontation with Batman.
It's worth remembering that it almost always takes all four of the turtles, plus at least one ally and some special condition to beat the Shredder. And they nearly always come out from the fight battered and broken. The fact that Batman was able to 1v1 him speaks VOLUMES about both fighter's abilities.

@tysoncarver5181 He's gotten folded by only two guys really. That's Slade and Bane. Both in which he came back and took both of them out. Shredder is much less intelligent and skilled than both of them.
2:46 Honestly the only reason shredder won was because batman messed up when he jumped at him like that , he could have thrown something at him first and then jumped but not at him then he could've rushed shredder and then beat him to Pulp 😓
2:03 I love how without a word, Shedder looks at his broken arm claws and his eyes have the most "oh hell no" expression. He was genuinely shook cause not even all the turtles at once could do that to him.
@@ianfinrir8724and then the Sato Oshi when he saw Batman slow down for the more dramatic jump. Foolishly giving Shredder the few precious seconds he needed to build up the SOS.
You can clearly see Batman's thought process throughout the whole fight. First he goes on the defensive; this is an entirely new opponent he's never faced before, so he tries to get to know his fighting style, speed, and aggression. When he makes a mistake and gets body hauled a great distance, he realizes that shredder is a skilled striker but has terrible defense against grappling. He then adapts his style to incorporate more short range jiujitsu and judo and nearly wins because of it. He then makes the clumsy mistake of assuming that he's imprinted enough of his fear tactics to make Shredder actually fear him. That, coupled with his analysis of shredder's fighting style suggesting nothing about magic based attacks; leading to his coup de grace catwalk jump.
I don't think Shredder has terrible defense against grappling. When he's being 'grappled,' Batman is counterattacking him. Shredder is in a compromised position where not many people would be able to stop being thrown. That's the nature of martial arts. If you notice, Shredder counters Batman with throws multiple times. That's just how it goes. What really hurts Shredder isn't 'being bad at grappling,' it's when he starts throwing big kicks that Batman easily counterattacks. If you notice, when it's hands, Shredder seems to have the advantage, and when it's feet, Batman does. In my mind, "Being bad against grappling," would mean Batman is actively trying to grapple and Shredder can't stop him. Like Zangief walking up and piledriving him. Not being thrown because Batman has good defense.
@@therizzler777He was rolling for Intimidation against a weakened opponent, which normally ends the encounter. Unfortunately Shredder had one legendary resistance left and burned it on the DC25 WIS save (or he just rolled a nat 20), which let him manage to get off his BS Polearm Master/Sentinel-esque opportunity attack when Batman entered his extended threat range. At least he just used Stunning Blow instead of Quivering Palm. Batman's usually one step ahead, but looks like this time he forgot to read the Adventurer's Guide to TMNT campaign supplement to preview what broken nonsense the devs gave the final boss. Maybe he was counting LR uses and thought Shredder was out (one to resist the grapple gun, two during the fight) and didn't realize the book actually gave him _4_ (powercreep in 5e is getting out of hand).

Shredder is also just a human. Batman should have flat out won. He is a man fighting gods on the weekends Shredder gets his ass kicked by the turtles and the power of friendship and brotherly love. Aint no way shredder getting that close to batman. Dont get me wrong the turtles are superhumanly strong but batman is a whole other level. Makes sense as Batman is probably a more versatile fighter. Shredder also struggles on defense. His style is all about aggression and power hits to kill or KO in one strike. But he should be thankful for that armor. Batman would have split his skull open a couple times.
Something I don’t hear praised enough about this scene is the sound design. Like, that moment at 1:20 when Shredder cuts through the guard railing? Beautiful.
Most of Shredder's sound effects in this fight are straight out of the 2012 TMNT show. Makes sense since this movie is Nickelodeon's. And yes they are amazing.
Every part about this fight is an absolute masterpiece. The tense music, the different fighting styles, both of them realizing they aren't fightjng an amateur, to Shredder using his blades against batarangs and Batman disarming Shredder. Even the way they used camera angle getting tilted as their head slams the ground; an absolute masterpiece.

I believe the telegraphed leap down with cape outstretched is an intimidation tactic. It probably works on goons and most of his Rogue's Gallery once he's roughed them up, but didn't realize Shredder was warrior to the core, and got hard punished for it.
Especially if when you consider that nearly none of Batman's Rogue Gallery fights to the death, even Ra's will retreat when he's defeated, Deathstroke is kind of a tossup. He acts like he wants to fight to the death, but his self-preservation rivals his desire for a fulfilling fight

@@briansilva3344 even then, shredder usually 1v4’s the turtles, and sometimes even more than 4. It usually takes splinter to join the turtles or some luck for him to lose
Batman has no distinct style since he basically has mastered every fighting style in planet earth and even knows alien martial arts. Yes you read that right, alien karate
Well Shredder goes for the kill, Batman goes for the disarming part. It is indeed both logical and exciting that people who made this thought of that. Batman's tecnique was never about killing, not even for his worst opponents. Shredder seems to be all about taking his oponent's life first and foremost. Bruce did get this natural hatred for killing, at least first-hand ever since the incident with his parents along with other stuff.
I love analyzing fights, and this one is worth analyzing. Let's start with Batman. First, he uses his grapple to try to restrain Shredder, and then Shredder cuts it. Not many blades can do that, so obviously, Batman is perturbed bye this turn of events. A boss killing his subordinates isn't anything new to him, Joker does it when he thinks it would be funny, so that's not what makes him put up his guard. It's the very clear danger that Shredder's blades pose. Then when Shredder basically drops down without so much as making a sound, that's when Batman realizes that he needs to play absolute defense until he can figure out how his opponent fights. He's then told that zoning won't cut it, as Shredder effortlessly blocks his batarangs, and notice where Batman was aiming- The _face._ Batman usually uses these to hit the main body and chest area, but he knows that his opponent is so fierce and tough that he can't take chances and is willing to go for the eyes. A lot of Batman's tactics change to using grapples and throws to deal some damage until he's finally able to disable one of Shredder's claws, at which point he takes an advantage and manages to gain the upper hand until Shredder hits Batman's throat and is ultimately able to disable Batman with his technique. But that's not to say that Shredder was flawless here. Admittedly, his experience with otherworldly threats and mutants in general meant that Batman's intimidation tactics weren't going to work here. He had Batman on the defensive until the Dark Knight started grappling Shredder, where his claws wouldn't be as effective. He clearly showed a slight edge in speed, as he was able to react to Batman's batarangs, and as stated earlier: _Had Batman on the defensive for most of the fight._ But once his claws were gone, so were all of his major advantages. Shredder was then put on the defensive, and while he got in some good hits, it was clear that his reliance on his claws is what did him in. His final technique would have likely been a lethal one had his claws not been broken earlier. And while he tries to claim that he was being merciful, it was clear that he wouldn't last that long in a prolonged fight against the Bat. And even if he came out on top, a random thug, or one of the Turtles would have been able to easily take him out. This battle was an intense showcase of both fighters' arsenal and tactics, and while we don't see much out of Batman's outside of his batarangs and grapple, it was an awesome showing of his martial arts prowess and fighting ability. Going up against a foe that's completely new to him and managing a *_draw_* is incredibly impressive for both sides. We like to meme on how prepared Batman is for fights, but he was out of his wheelhouse for this one, and it showed. Meanwhile, Shredder was also in foreign waters as he wasn't prepared for an opponent who could actually disarm him before being stabbed.
Very nice analysis. Though i will add to your point about Shredder dipping out when he did. Not only did he realize he couldn't too long. But he was also running on empty since that ultimate strike he used burned everything he had left in the tank. Leo explains this move later on to Bats.
This movie is just full of references from both series, and pokes fun at them while treating them with respect. Michelangelo using his nunchucks to deflect attacks like he does in the cartoon opening from the 80's, Donatello going "Bosanova", which was a line from the original movie, the turtle's questioning the huge blimps in Gotham's sky while also acknowledging that they are cool, the teens loving the Batmobile, Alfred being a boss, the Joker using the Ooze for a crazy Joker scheme; this movie was obviously made by people who are fans of both franchises.
THIS is what makes the Shredder so cool In a world of mutants with varying powers, the most dangerous villain of them all is a mortal man who happens to be a _damn_ good ninja. No magic and no mech suits
Awesome stuff. Though in reality, there were several exchanges where the smaller blades on Shredder’s forearm and shin armor ought to have slashed up Batman’s arms and legs pretty badly - simply by reason of the sharp edges, and the amount of force they were both putting into their strikes and blocks. But hey - cartoons - right?
Can I just say; Had Shredder thrown that first shuriken at the back of Batman's head, and dealt with the talkative minion later, this fight would have never taken place.... ....or throw *two* shuriken!
@@DeathReviews I'd like to think that Batman's armor, especially his gauntlets, are more than a match for pressing up against Shredders blades (it's for knives and small arms fire and, fun fact: In this batsuit, the reason the icon on his chest is yellow is because it's _literally_ a target, it's the most armored spot on his body). If Shredder connected a hit, like he hit that railing, I'm sure he would have torn right through it, but simply pressing up against it to throw him or block something with his gauntlets, would be alright. Also the wing tips on those gloves are pointy, and sharpened, but they're for defense rather than cutting implements (sharp just in case he _needs_ to cut through something), so they're thicker and practically designed for him to turn away blades, including the Shredder's But, *AGAIN,* as I said above ^
I love how although Shredder should have made a final blow, he was savvy enough to realize that if he tried, Batman likely still had some fight in him and would not just allow himself to be taken down. With how drained he was from the blows he took, his main weapons broken, and using that enhanced strike, he knew if the fight continued he had a strong possibility of losing. So although leaving an opponent alive who had learned how he fought would be a bad idea, he had no choice but to back away while he still had the chance.
Not really batman was down, shredder stood up, he could have killed batman but decided to shoe mercy for whatever reason. Furthermore, it took 4 turtles and batman to defeat shredder. Batman was too worn out from the first fight. If he wasnt and could go on then why didnt he get up?

From what I saw, Batman had clear control of that fight. He is the superior fighter between the two. A touch of irony, it's actually Shredder who had plot armor with his super ninja attack.
What I love the most about this fight is that when both of them realize how dangerous the other is, they start using moves to either incapacitate or knock out their opponent out more frequently. Love that little detail.
To be honest, it looked like a special stance with some chi channeling or something. He was shaking a lot. I shake like that when I'm trying to apply pressure or precision, especially precision. Maybe the technique is just a special stance that exherts the body but causes massive damage?

@@frankdeleon4209 still Turtles have defeated him many times.in the end of the film Mickey attacked Shreader after saying Mickey's catchphrase
"Victory has defeated you."
Also it helps that Shredder has faced a fighter like Batman before, Batman being trained by ninjas and actively use their techniques Shredder would look past the smoke and mirrors of Batman’s tactics and take him out (albeit, with Batman giving him a good fight)
😊
He only lost because Shredder used a very unrealistic technique. If it was regular martial arts, Batman ultimately would’ve won the fight.

That, coupled with his analysis of shredder's fighting style suggesting nothing about magic based attacks; leading to his coup de grace catwalk jump.
yeah then became braindead all of a sudden, jumping like that vs a skilled striker opponent 😂😂
@@therizzler777Ikr, I was literally laughing when he jumped down like an actual idiot

God I love they let Shredder do his jump into the scene intro from the original live action movie~

Not gonna lie this is the best representation of Shredder fighting I've ever seen.
To go toe to toe, be evenly matched, and walk away from a battle _with_ *Batman* is no small accomplishment for any character
Can I just say;

Also the wing tips on those gloves are pointy, and sharpened, but they're for defense rather than cutting implements (sharp just in case he _needs_ to cut through something), so they're thicker and practically designed for him to turn away blades, including the Shredder's
But, *AGAIN,* as I said above ^

I think Batman tried his cape jump for one of two reasons: either he did it as an intimidation tactic, like it usually evokes a sense of fear in his local thugs, or it was meant to help actually jump & glide down more easily like in the Arkham games
I could see Batman doing it just because he always does that and it almost always works.
It serves both purposes: intimidation and slowing down his descent by making his cape act like wings
Probably could a let him change his direction in case shredder tried getting out of the way.
Or assumed because he was higher up, his body was silhouetted, and tried to obscure his kick.
Or just you know...force of habit
Batman could have won mid diff, but they wanted to make it more intense

And if you know anything about Batman, you know intimidation is a biiig part of his shtick. 👌
