    Hi Diane. Thank you so much for this. I had an ungodly anxiety attack earlier and couldn't sleep. Was so glad to see a new Diane video, got out of bed and did a tiny vase of flowers which is the first thing ive done in at least a week that i dont think will go directly to the bin. It's nowhere near as nice as yours but it's something. Its about 2 am here, so hopefully ill be able to sleep now.

      Sorry to hear that you had a bad night. I hope things settled down for you. I honestly have found that since I started to paint every day (regardless of the quality of the painting) my panic attacks have stopped occurring unless there is a serious trigger, so I haven’t had one for ages now. One suggestion though, try doing small paintings in a little inexpensive sketchbook and KEEP them, there’s something healing about NOT throwing your work away. Just a suggestion. I have a book like this one: amzn.to/4bXjnSF

      @@DianeAntoneStudio Thanks Dianne. I did 3 more quick and small ones today. I really enjoyed it. I used cheap old paper and it really wasn't all that bad. I guess it doesn't allow me to overthink and overwork the paintings which is part of what I tend to do wrong.

      Yes, I think so too. I have the ink blocks, but they are very time consuming aren’t they. Good for a meditation process but not very practical. I think these pans will help with the learning process.

    I have to tell you a funny story!
    My garden club had entries at the NM state fair. We were one entry short for the oriental division so someone had a flat white dish, I gathered discarded flowers from the garbage bins (we only use our best flowers & discard the rest) , I threw together an arrangement in 10 minutes. I had never done anything oriental & figured it would definitely not be a winner!
    Later we came for the judging & it was gone! I thought oh geez it was so bad they removed it!
    Well we walked over to the winners table & low & behold it won state Fair special award! Grand prize! 😂 what a shock!
    I believe this story has a moral. Always try! You just might be better than you think you are! We sadly judge ourselves too much sometimes!
    The discarded items put together made a beautiful first place 🏅!

    Oh, yes. Sumi e is wonderful. It’s the first thing I started painting, badly then not quite so badly and now not terrific but not bad at all. The Japanese do wonderful, graceful flowing things with a minimum of brush strokes. Their birds are my favorite..cranes, etc. anyway, I would love anything you might decide to do with it as is anything you do.

    I have 4 dogs whose main job is shedding, I have no carpeting because I hate to vacuum. I use my dust mop to sweep the floors of dog hair and dirt in a pile and suck it up with my vacuum hose. Works well and I don't have to shove a vacuum around it stays stationary.

    • @msgail7232

      Same here, dust mop then pick up blobs of whatever hubs tracks in the house on his feet he doesn't wipe off outside on the rug designed to wipe off feet!! With the lights low, dust does not show on furniture. More time to paint!

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  Месяц назад +1

      That’s a good idea Virginia. I have all hard flooring downstairs in the house, except a small area rug in the sitting room. Hubby vacuums the middle of these rooms (has a problem seeing into corners…) and picks up most of the dog hair. It’s a good idea to use a dust mop in the way you say, I hadn’t thought of that. I do have one, so I’ll swap to using that, and get him to do the vacuuming. It really has made my hand sore, and I can’t have that happening now can I!!!!

    I have been using small pieces of paper for about 2 yrs now. It’s a good idea. I’m sure I’m not the first. I practice on student grade WC paper. When dry, I flip over and cut into 4’s. Usually a 4”x6” size. Then I cut in half again 2 of the 4”x6” pieces of paper. No matter the size of the paper, I cut into 4ths. I use the smallest pieces of paper for testing colors or swatching a small number of colors or checking brushstroke/s. Also, create small paintings.
    Many times, Im not happy with my paintings. I don’t toss it tho. In college, I had an art teacher that said even if you aren’t happy with your painting, there is always part of it that works! I took that to heart and look for part or parts of the painting that do work. I cut those parts out and save them. Which equals a lot of little happy paintings! The useless pieces of paper become my swatch paper.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  Месяц назад

      Hi Deltamom, you do basically the same as I have always done. It’s true, almost every painting has lots of good things in it. In fact often it’s only one element that spoils it. Since I started having a pile of small pieces of paper to hand I feel much more liberated to try out new ideas. I should have done this years ago!

    One thing I learned from a book the was very helpful when trying to draw bamboo was the angle of the joints (my word for those little notches that are spaced up and down the branch). You know like slightly curved up or down depending if you are eye level (which would be straight), below or above. I hope this is understandable…

    Great ideas! Your eyes are just fine or at least mine agree with yours. When I saw you when you were ready to begin a little painting, you had the little paper on the much larger brown background and I thought that might be an attractive way to mat the little paintings! Yes, here the brushes are readily available in the art shops, they call them Chinese brushes, but they look like the one you’re using. They are very inexpensive and often goat
    hair. Some synthetic of course. You do a great job with that brush!Great! No more vacuums!! How about one of those robot ones? I don’t have one but I did send one to my son once when he was over the top stressed at work and that was the only thing that I could think of to help! ( He is in a huge house but not really by choice and doesn’t ever want that to happen again!) I agree, too much work and we’d much rather paint, wouldn’t we! Lovely color palette today! 💕

      Thanks Donna for your lovely chatty message! That’s a good idea about mounting a tiny painting on a coloured background. Would show it up nicely. I wonder about the robot vacuum. I don’t know if it would be able to navigate its way around the studio, are they good at avoiding obstacles? I imagine the dog would go bonkers… try to kill it? Maybe he’d get used to it eventually! Certainly would be helpful. Hope things are better for your son, we are pretty limited when it comes to helping them aren’t we… Thanks for all your support, you’re such a loyal friend xxx Diane xxx

I tried using different greens on the leaves, and it was horrible, just ungodly! It's actually what clued me into mixing and got me interested in pigments and 'mother color'. Obviously, I need to try again, maybe using the wet in wet.
    I love the layering you did on the pots.❤ 😊

    Dear Diane, interesting paints, they look good for monochrome painting I think. That yellow looks a little like the Winsor and newton watercolour green gold. I have a bamboo plant on the landing and I swear it grows overnight 😮it's nearly touching the ceiling 😂they do say it's a fast grower. Thanks for showing Diane , love the miniature paintings . I too love washi tape . Hope we get some nice weather soon ❤ Hate getting older at times dont you , all the aches and pains , I only have to do but of weeding now in the garden and next day my hands hurt 😂 XX

      Hi Susan and thanks for your chatty message! Yes to the aches and pains, not happy about muscles objecting at the slightest effort! Bamboo on the landing? I didn’t know it would grow indoors, that sounds like fun, maybe I’ll look for one at the garden centre!

      @@DianeAntoneStudio Thanks for replying Diane , just to say the bamboo I have originated from the single stems you can buy that you just keep in water and are relatively small but the one I have is about 10years old and still growing tall, and the upstairs landing has the highest ceiling 😂 Not sure what to do eventually might have to give him the chop 😮XX If I can I will send you a photo to your email XX

    There are two Kuretake sets that have "graphite" colors with be very subtle beautiful colors. One set of 6 is about $16.00 (15.99?, what I currently have) and above is like yours about $20.00. Are they the same? Just wondering.
    Btw, I cut my big Watercolor Paper pads to "trading card" size. I used to "trade" Watercolor paints with others before CoVid Pandemic.
    I guess we should start again. 😉. Who's with me?

      Hi and thanks for the comments, I’m not sure about the differences between those two sets… I wonder why the pandemic affected the trading cards - was that a general loss of interest or were you just too busy with other things for a while? It’s a nice idea, I know it used to be a big thing.

Are you using something besides watercolor paper? ( i kept watching and you clarified. )Thanks for the video im a new subscriber

      Hi and welcome to the channel! Glad you got the info you wanted about the paper. Are you in the UK or in the States? It is a bit hard sometimes to get the Clairefontaine paper in the US (made in France) and at the moment I can‘t find the Etival (which is a cellulose paper but a very good one) but I‘m hoping they‘ll restock on Amazon at some point. The other kind of Clairefontaine paper is called “Fontaine“ and it is 100% cotton and that is available on Amazon. amzn.to/3x5i9pA They also do something called Paint On which is a mixed media paper which comes in lots of tints and that’s on amazon too. Here’s a link to the white one: amzn.to/3yAewIW Might be interesting for you to have a look at. I hope you enjoy more of our videos (we’ve got nearly 1000 of them!!) Happy painting! Diane x

    Ink like may mean permanent. Watercolor pencils not permanent.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Rita, there seems to be confusion over the words. To me, in the world of painting, “permanent” means “non-fading” - some seem to think it means “non-lifting” or “staining” as we call colors (like Phthalo Blue) which can’t be removed once put on paper. I have paintings that my daughter did almost 40 years ago with a set of Faber Castel watercolor pencils and they have not faded, so I would say they are permanent. I need to do some research to find out what is actually put into coloured pencils. I thought it was coloured pigment and a binder of a waxy type which if it dissolved would give a watercolor pencil and if it didn’t, would be just a coloured pencil. I think Derwent’s InkTense are just very highly pigmented, but I’m waiting to hear from them with more information so I actually know the truth!!!! It’s a minefield out there!

    A couple of months ago I bought a tin of Derwent Inktense pencils as they were advertised as water soluble, but waterproof when dry, like ink. They were water soluble and they remained water soluble even after being left to dry for a day or two, which completely ruined two pieces of work. No response from Derwent when I emailed them so I returned the pencils to amazon and got a refund. Disappointing to say the least.
