- Today I have three instantly helpful and completely doable ideas for getting over the barriers we all face when we want to paint. I’m warming up by playing with a new set of Nyoni pastel pencils, which make a very interesting change from watercolor, and then I get my faithful Kuretake Gansai Tambi set out to paint - you guessed it - chickens!

In school, like a hundred years ago, the fun with pastels was the smudging.
Oh yes, and a “stump” is a good idea for that to save the fingers!
Those pencils look like fun, except for the sinister chap on the front of the tin😅❤
LOL !!!
Love your dear little chickens. They make me smile and you are so funny!
Fun and informative!
😊 thank you
Yes!! Write a book!!! ❤ Love these chickens.
Aw c'mon Diane.. He's a cute and rugged man!
Er yes, I think I dreamt about him last night!
😂😂😂
@@DianeAntoneStudio Hahaha LOL haaahaha
Yep that’s me at the moment Diane ….confidence gone……. Thanks for being so honest & encouraging! 💛
Keep it up Caroline, you can do it!
Love the chickens. I used pastels when I was young, I remember begging my father to get me some. I even remember some of the things I did…. Princesses and fairies, as preteens would do. About 60 years later I took a class in pastels and decided it was not for me. The pandemic ended that class. Watercolor and ink is my favorite now.
I’m the same in some ways Linda, have tried pastels with determination but somehow the medium just seems like too much hard work. But the pencils are better!
Break that block! Paint a chicken. I think I will put that on a tshirt. With a brindle patterned rooster. Excellent idea!
Sounds great!
Lovely chickens. The pastel pencils look fun. I’ve never used pastels
They make a change!
Love the chickies! Thanks for your great videos and your sense of humour! ❤
Thanks so much Suzette!
Yes do watch out for those vacuum cleaners they are beasts. There is a hilarious Simon’s Cat video involving one of these monsters, I can laugh just thinking about it. Love the chooks.
Just for people who do you like pastels the chunkier ones, but you have issues with either touching it or dry hands. There are pastel holders that exist that works similar to pencil holders when your pencil gets very short. You can also rap a little bit of paper or tissues around the pastel, so you’re not touching it or some people even wear gloves, either plastic or material gloves
The problem with the pastel holders is that you have to either have hundreds of them or keep changing them and I’m too impatient and artist to do that! Gloves would be the answer for me.
May 333 th. Not in my best mood for some time, but I will still - not every day anymore- support you channel. Bookmarks with chickens are maybe a good starting point to feel a little better. Moods flow, so I will get out of my dip. Thanks for your tribute to make the world a little brighter. 😊wim
Hi Wim and sorry to hear that you’re feeling down. I know and understand what you mean. Now is when you need most to paint, to get out of the dip. I hope you come through it soon - I’ve missed seeing your message daily! Bon courage as they say here! Love, Diane xxx
Very Beautiful and Wonderful Art ,
Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏼🙏🏼👏👏😍😍💚💚
Thank you so much 😊
You could get finger covers like gloves to work the regular pastels. The details are done with the pastel pencils in that case. 😊
That's a great idea! If I ever have time to pick up pastels again… lol
I love to work with pastels sometimes. The pencils are a good idea for those who do not like the feel of the chalky pastels on their fingers. I hope your hand heals well...my vacuum is the same way. Hopefully your husband can help you. You guys have beautiful chickens and you made some really cute, cute bookmarks of them!
Thanks Jeanie, glad you like them! And yes, the pencils are much better than the soft sticks dust-wise!
Diane, these are so cute!
💥 I’m the BIGGEST chicken‼️
This is a really great idea. I have those pencils but haven’t used them. (Don’t know why.🤷🏻♂️)
I like this idea.
THANKYOU Diane 💕
Easily done. I’m the same!
These look so cute, I love it ☺☺
Hello! Loving mimic your techniques- learning so much 🥰
So glad!
I am so going to paint some chooks. Great video.
Go for it! Easier than folks think!
Hi Diane, I love your chickens, they have such a whimsical look. I have the Koh-i-Noor pastel pencils and my first attempt was to draw the picture on the tin which i have to say is much nicer than the one our tin of pencils, it turned out really well, would love to send you a photo of it. And thank you for having the link on the screen at the start of this video for your sister site, I did try and find it the other day but with no success but I have now and subscribed. Thank you for all that you do. I had to smile when you said about the vacuum cleaner and how your husband is going to vacuum for you now, my hubby does ours too because now we are retired he feels he should ‘do’ something to help! 😂 take care of your hands. Sandy 🌸
Hi Sandy, thanks for your kind comments! Glad you managed to find @fromthegarden and to subscribe, that’s great and Tamsin will be continually uploading videos from time to time - when she has time! If you want to share a painting with me you can either join our Facebook group or send it to me by email at studio@dianeantone.com where I will see it. My hand is still aching a bit but I’m sure it’ll get better eventually!! Take care xxx Diane xxx
No more vacuuming is worth a celebration!🤩🍾Love the chicken🍀💖
I love when books come with multiple paper colors in one! I just made my own kraft (brown)/ white mm paper and white watercolor paper sketchbook so I could do many things in one book.
Yes, these Paint On pads are pretty good!
Love little cards and bookmarks. ❤ appreciate this demonstration D.
I love the chickens. I tried....my drawing and painting still very sad. The turtle is precious, I'd hang it on my walls...yes m'am. I have an Arteza set of wc pencils and a couple of paint boxes but until I learn and make some kind of headway I can't buy more stuff. You are my go to for what to buy, have done quite a bit of Meeden and a few other things you mentioned but have to put the brakes on for a bit. I just WANT EVERYTHING!! LOL (but seriously) Would like the 'ink tense' pencils. Thanks much for sharing.
Hi Kathy, you’re right to put the brakes on, and practice with what you have… unless you really want the pencils, in which case !!!!!!! Go for it!
Cute little chickens! ❤
Always so much fun! Thank you, Diane!, I never know how to start or what to draw or paint.
You are so welcome! It’s always a problem!
Enjoy your style
Love the chickens
I am drawing a couple of simple chickens - fun!
Wonderful!
I rennet using pastel/chalk in school and we would use our finger or knuckle and rub it into a creamy smoothness.
Remember not rennet
Yes, that would be fun for children to do!
I LOVE your chicken's. I will try...
I love how pastels look and what they can do, but unfortunately I can’t stand the sound or the feel of them in my fingers I even have the pastel pencils. My mum bought me years ago in a beautiful box and just the sound of it is like nails on a chalkboard. I constantly see particularly mix media Arliss using pastels and then adding some water on top of them and it gets me. All excited to try them again and then a soon as I’m anywhere near a real pastel in a shop I start cringing in freaking out, happy to stick with my watercolours and other mediums sunny enough, though I love oil, pastels and water soluble crayons , just not the same as that dry chalk
I agree - I don't like the sound / feel / dustiness of dry pastels. Diane did get a nice effect with them, though.
I understand that feeling, they are obviously just the same as chalk on a blackboard and there are lots of people who don’t like that sound.
Thanks Karen!
These chickens are so cute 😊. I make lots of bookmarks usually golf related because I golf and belong to a golf ladies group that enjoys them. How about a chick with a golf ball! 😂🤣
That's a great idea!
I definitely need to break my block😊
Bonsoir, j adore tes poules, trop belles.
Thinking of blending the the pastels ,I’ve just come across” blending stumps and tortillions “.
Who knew!! What else is out there I’ve never heard of or knew existed?! Might be useful though.🙂
Yes, I used to use them when I was painting in pastel a while back. TBH I prefer the unblended look of pastels personally, I’m not a highly finished person really!
I agree with you about quinacridone gold. I specifically went out to buy some months ago after watching several of your videos and got some, lol. Isn't Gamboge similar? I'm still trying to learn what all the different colors are and what they mean. Still trying to learn how to figure which ones are more transparent.
I think it’s similar but it does depend on the brand too. Have you looked at Jane Blundell’s blog on colors? Loads of info there! janeblundellart.blogspot.com/
Diane...my CarbOthello pastel pencils will activate with water....kind of fun! Do these do that?? These are much more economical!
So far it seems they don’t really activate with water very well. Some more than others. I haven’t fully explored them yet!
Do they rub off like chalk pastels do. Fixative required?
If they are behind glass and you paint lightly, no problem, no need for fixative really. If you use pastel thickly it can fall down in time even behind glass. Fixative can darken your colors somewhat. So it’s a bit of a hobson’s choice situation.
