  • Sketchbook paintings are the BEST FUN EVER - Boost your confidence and create with this watercolor method.
I’m into sketchbook art at the moment and I’m going to suggest that we start collecting our watercolor fantasy doodles in a sketchbook to help us feel we’re making progress with all the techniques we need to create with confidence. If we practice these doodles often, and keep them to refer back to when we are lacking inspiration, our painting skills will improve seemingly without any effort! So practice your color mixing, water control, creating graduated washes, different strokes and both wet-in-wet and wet-on-dry as well as line work with ink, gel pens, pencils and brush pens all in one great big sketchbook and see where that takes you!

Hi Diane! just wanted to say a huge thank you for speaking about me and my channel! I really appreciate the shoutout and the kind words about my art and videos 😊 So happy to have discovered your channel because of this and looking forward to watching more! 🥰 Love how the seashells turned out, the warm background colour works so well at highlighting their patterns!

Thanks so much for this Katie, I was so happy to find you because you are so nice to listen to and watch, and you‘re so good at what you do. I‘m genuinely excited at the idea of using sketchbooks to paint in - I always used sketchbooks for literally sketching in prior to “proper“ painting! Wishing you all the best with your channel and I hope some of my folk cross over to you!

I am new to watercolor and at first I painted on loose sheets of paper or blocks. When I got to an ugly stage, I rarely finished. I had random sheets of watercolor paper all over my office ( now studio!) and was very discouraged. All that has changed with my decision to use a sketchbook. I feel much more compelled to finish each painting and it is great to easily go back and look at my progress. I use it for everything, making swatches, and painting “real” things, mainly flowers. With my birthday coming, I ordered Etchr sketchbooks. Until now I was using Artisto and I am quite happy with it but eager to try 100% cotton paper. I will likely try some landscape paintings based on your tutorials, Diane.

That’s brilliant, and I think you’re right, and this is something actually quite new to me although I’ve always had sketchbooks on hand they were only for preparatory sketches, not “real” paintings.

I love your etchr journal - with the writing on the right side of the paper and the painting on the left. It makes it look so professional. What a lovely idea. Your paintings in that book are just marvellous. I would love it if you would do a "sketchbook Tour" for us - go through your different journals and sketchbooks and discuss some of the artwork you've done. I think it would be fascinating.

I am not one for using a journal but I do like the idea of binding the paintings together. I usually paint in 5" x 7" size and then any that don't get framed are turned into greeting/note cards that I use, sell, or donate. I've donated hundreds to a local group that helps seniors and they are now my biggest fans. I get emails from the recipients telling me how much they love my art. It really helps my ego. 🙂

Thank you so much for that great video and painting! On Hayling Island I live almost on the beach. It is more or less our garden as we only have a small walled patio. I have often looked at the pebbles and crunchy shells as I walk on them and couldn't think how to turn them into artwork. I have already had an attempt at pebbles from the video you did. I love these shells!!

I like what you said about following some people, not necessary because you like there taste, but because you can learn a lot from them. The first painter that I started following 5 (?) years ago I have absolutely nothing in common with but she is a fountain of knowledge. I still follow her. I have a couple or so others that I follow for the same reason. I find I have learned so much from these, very different from my taste, artists.

After binging on all your videos with Kuretaki, I searched for other artists using them. If you are the Kuretaki Queen (which I wholeheartedly support), then @ViviGonzalesArt is the Princess of Art Nouveau color mixing. Yes, Katie is a breath of fresh air and very illuminating as regards the younger generation and their take on art. I was amazed at the influence of Japanese art on her - the things which she brought back from her visit to Japan were just completely out of my familiarity zone!! That's wonderful!! I like all the different mediums that went into it. Whether or not you are the Queen of Kuretake I get excited when you pull out one or the other of those paint sets. I sure a lot probably wish you to move back onto the traditional paint boxes most of the time. Being 76 and just recently entering the world of wc, for some reason I just can't seem to get into the 2 that I have. I swatched them but seeing wonderful bright and in the case of the 'art nouveau' those lovely colors, it just makes me happy to look at the direct colors right in from of me....not having to learn the colors from constantly picking up a swatch card to figure out what dark color is what in the regular paint sets. I don't think I'll ever memorize what's what in those LOL. Anyway, Thanks for sharing this delightful piece and showing me how to use several dif mediums together in watercolor.

      @DianeAntoneStudio  Месяц назад +1

Hi Kathy and thanks for sharing your thoughts. There is no doubt that the Kuretake paints have changed my approach to art for the better. It’s easier to be bold and direct with them. But I still love the traditional paints, and the subtle way they work. Room for both in my life! You should use whatever you find easiest, there’s nothing you can’t do with the Kuretake paints, so why stress yourself out making life harder for no reason? Just have fun! Sending love xxx

Yes, I have heard Debbie Walker recommend the Artistro ones highly and they are cheap in the USA. Take a look here: amzn.to/3WR9gdT

@@DianeAntoneStudioI bought them as they are inexpensive. I find they are not highly absorbent like cotton paper. That makes it challenging for me. I am still trying to figure out the best way to use them. However they seem to work quite well with watercolor pencils. I wouldn't recommend it for pen and ink work. The paper is not smooth enough.

May 328 th.watched it yesterday but didn't have the opportunity to like and comment. So I do it today. In some way my monkey mind and procrastination make me too restless to really enjoy watching a long video. It makes me even more restless. I want to paint too but I even cannot get started😢. So I will look for some shorter ones and give it a try. Slugs in my vegetable garden are a disaster. I have to fight them, but it's almost a lost battle. All t

All the rain makes gardening very unpleasant and not rewarding. I know that time changes everything so my restlessness will lessen in time. You seem to have a good vibe to create even every day. Thanks for sharing😊Wim.

Bises mon amie a bientot .

Thank you, Diane. Your wonderful work is inspiring. Sometimes I draw with watercolor and gouache, but my tools are old. I live in Syria. I would like to buy watercolor brushes, but they are not expensive. What do you advise me?

Do you have art shops in your area? Perhaps there are brushes for sale or maybe you can order them from Dubai or somewhere similar?

Yes, there is a store here, but it is not at the required level. In fact, my son will try to send it to me. He lives in the United Kingdom, but I hope it is not expensive. Thank you for your interest, Diane❤ And I would like to tell you that you made me love drawing birds.

You mention that you are using the Canson XL Mixed Media (90 lb) paper but the link is for Canson XL Watercolor (140 lb) paper. Which are you using please?

I also noticed that when I went to Amazon to check the price. Would like to know if it’s the mixed media sketchbook or the watercolor sketchbook, please. Thank you for another lovely video! You really work magic with those Kuretake paints!

I have tried using the mixed media book and 90 lb doesn’t hold up very well with my washes. Now I only use it for line painting and ink for neurotrophic/Zentangle drawing and will get the 140 lb for w/c.

I think sometimes the thicker sketchbook isn’t available and they substitute on amazon the thinner one. Mine is 140lb mixed media paper. This is the smaller one in this paper amzn.to/4dT67QI and this is the bigger one amzn.to/4bq69OE. If these links don’t take you to 138lb mixed media paper, then they are out of stock in your region. They are the right links for the product in amazon.com right now. Hope this helps, xxx
