I’m so glad to see this video!! I don’t know if I should share this or not….but after my divorce, I felt so liberated or something that I bought all kinds of art supplies and seem to keep doing that!! Anyway I’m very fortunate to have some of those and of course see if I NEED more colors!! I should really stop!🙃😂Thank you Diane!!💕
Oh my goodness! Thank you for sharing some of your sketchbooks with us. Lovely and inspiring. My daughter was born in 1986 - the year of the first sketchbook you leafed through! Since i found you and adopted you as my teacher I have filled several sketchbooks ... and now I want to bind some of my loose paintings in a homemade sort of sketchbook. I'm proud to call you my teacher!
I have always wanted to draw and paint and have never persevered beyond a few pages in a sketch book. Watching your videos, Diane, makes me wish I had persevered. There is so much pleasure in seeing you transform a white page into a view I long to explore. I will break out my paints and pencils once more and try again. And I will continue to watch you because it gives me such peace. Thank you.
I'm in the same boat as you are jayf. Sometimes it seems so complicated I don't know where to start. Diane is such an inspiration, she keeps me going. ❤😊 I'm working in a large book right now and in the back I do swatching and in the front I do 'follow alongs'.
Your happy medium is paint, mine is definitely pencils. I have a set of 24 Lyra aquarelle pencils which I mainly use to sketch, then fill in with paint. I am in awe of anyone who just picks up a brush and paints whatever they want. Without a drawing, I can’t do anything! I’m doing far more mixed media these days, so this is right up my alley.
I have always resisted the impulse to buy these pencils. I have a lot of ordinary watercolour pencils, which I felt were lacking in intensity. This was even when I pressed harder on the page. I have changed my mind now, having seen the lovely vibrant picture you have created. Thank you so much for this lovely video.
I was captivated the moment you touched the pencil marks with the water! I have owned watercolor pencils for years and never really used them like this. I am totally amazed. I can’t wait to try them. …. And that is not the only takeaway from this video…. The sheep positions and personalities as well as the chickens, I don’t know why I have never drawn or painted them. Probably because I don’t see any where I live. But in my defense, I saw a turtle the other day, sketched it, and painted it in my daily art journal! Diane, you have inspired me in so many ways. Sometimes I watch the same videos over and over…. And still can’t wait for the next one. Thank you for making my art and my life so much richer. (I’m from Pennsylvania, USA)
Update: I’ve done two paintings so far with the pencils. There definitely is the surprise factor and delight in the outcome. Both look pretty good. The pencils that I already have are Prismacolor, the names are different than yours and probably the selection but they worked quite fine. I got them years ago along with a dozen or so individual pencils when I was learning skin tones. I haven’t touched them since. I’m excited to explore more of what I can do with them. I already have your sister channel and think there are so many ideas. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas and support. My art has grown so much.
Thanks so much for sharing Linda and I’m so glad you are exploring the pencils. They are a great addition and in fact, mixed media is calling to me right now in a gentle kind of way! I never painted a chicken until I got some of my own so you’re not alone! I’m happy to hear that the pencils are working for you and I’ll be using them again soon so look out for the next video!
My daughter gave me the same set of pencils a few years ago and though I have played with them a bit, I couldn't get the hang of it. This was exactly what I needed to try again. I'll look forward to more videos with this medium. Thanks!
This was a wonderful scene. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I loved looking at your sketches and hope you will do a video of a quick (not too quick) flip through of all of your work! Great video, thank you for sharing your talent!!
I just watched someone else’s video on using these pencils. I learned that these you are using are actually ink and not the same as other water color pencils. Now I want to buy a set of these as well because I love the look. I have found that if I’m not careful using my Faber Castell watercolor pencils, I lose my shading. The layers just blend into one solid color. I see these ink color pencils are a bit different to work with. Love them!
Yes I found them completely different from ordinary watercolour pencils which I have never really had complete joy from! These inktense are a different kettle of fish altogether! Everyone deserves a box of a dozen!

This is wonderful, Diane. My daughter gave me a box of Faber watercolour pencils for my birthday last year and I hadn't had too much chance of using them, mainly because I'm obsessed with my Kuretake watercolours! 😊I found this video very exciting, really inspiring. Your landscapes are so lovely. More, please! And thank you so much.
Wonderful! Yes, more will be coming! Just to say, the Inktense pencils are very different from regular watercolor pencils as they have solid ink in them not whatever they put in the watercolor pencils. This is new to me too!
Thanks Diane. How beautifully you worked with those Ink Intense pencils. Your picture is charming and I loved watching it come to life. I was delighted when I saw the Ink Intense pencils and went rifling through my desk drawers to find my forgotten ones. A couple of years ago I was 'stuck in bed' and used them with a waterbrush. They were lovely for painting flowers and vegetables...using gardening magazines as I couldn't go out. I am looking forward to trying them again in a different way. Great! 😊
Hello Diane, I must admit that your title has intrigued me... and here I am watching your video. Sorry for my absence. I have been working with acrylics lately because I can paint "practical" things with them for sale. My house is overflowing with my art, so now I focus on creating art that can be used by others. And, since there are many amazing artists who paint wall paintings, I choose to focus on practical things such as boxes and furniture. i can only do so much at one time. Ha, ha. I do enjoy watercolors and had fun with them. and, thanks to you, have quite a stash of supplies of paints and papers. Thank you for this an incredible gift you have given us in this video, sharing your memories with us. This is next bit is personal. Feel free to ignore it. One of your artworks had a different name on it and it sounded like you said that you were married. Different married name than your current? I completely understand the thrill of using watercolor pencils. Loads of fun. However, I am glad that NOT everyone is as thrilled as you and I. We wouldn't want an entire world to be watercolor artists. We need people who are thrilled about the stuff that we are not. Otherwise, nothing would be done. Ha, ha. I absolutely love that you approach each video as though you were teaching a brand new would be artist and try to make it easy for everyone. Many other artists do not understand the necessity of going through these basic steps each time. They don't think that each video might be an introduction into their form of art and that the viewer needs to see the basics. You do go over the basics and I just want to commend you for it, for your everlasting patience. Thank you for your nurturning attitude towards drawing and for pointing out the tricks to each thing. Thank you for this video.
Hi there, thanks for dropping by Eve! I appreciate your support as always and am glad you enjoy @fromthegarden as well. Yes, I‘ve been married more than once. A couple of shortlived ones a long time ago !
Want to try these pencils! I have some that I’ve never played with. Maybe it’s time I did. Love how the pigments come alive with water and that can keep reworking as you see the possibilities. Thanks. Great video.
Family issues are taking place. I have a son who is stuck in the horrific flooding in southern Brazil. No way to come home to the USA. One day at a time. Also have other situations that need my energy and focus. Watching you paint is a godsend for me.
So do I! I got them on sale a couple months ago... I have a set of Faber Castell (12), I thought they would be good for under drawings, but haven't done anything with them. I've swatched the 72 set and they are delightful! Having all of the extra colors made me think differently about what I am drawing/ painting. I wonder where I put those? 😂 ❤
Thank you Diane for sharing your sketch books and giving us all a peek into your life at an earlier time. Also for sharing your current farm life, along with permission to use the views of your farm for our own creations, you are so very generous. I also appreciate hearing the animals in the background -along with the very thirsty dog - while you share your art work which I always love, this one today is no exception, just delightful. Wishing you and your heartless monster of a husband ()a wonderful week end. 😁
Hi Jane and thanks so much for your kind words! (Glad you appreciate my twisted sense of humour -he’s not really heartless, he is in love with our cats…) Wishing you a great weekend too!
I enjoyed the sketchiness and looseness of the work, which I always find difficult to achieve. I agree with you about the trees ! I’m going to give it go later today 😊
How fun you used these pencils! I have this exact set of Derwent as this brand is very popular in the U.S. The Goldfaber Aqua Faber-Castell and bruynzeel Holland are my other two sets. So many cute subjects you have to draw and paint. Thank you for sharing your sweet animals with us. Blessings
I've used these pencils for many years. I add to my original set by buying some open stock now and then. I love using them. I always felt guilty using them to add to any of my artwork, as if I was violating some unspoken rule, but thanks to watching your videos over time I do what ever I feel like! That and the fact that I'm heading towards another decade in a few years! Hahaha. Thanks for everything you share.
Thanks for this demonstration on how to use the Derwent Inktense pencils. I have a set but haven't really done much with them. I've got to try this, I love how the colors come alive when they get wet. This scene is so charming.
I loved your sketchbook tours. Thank you for sharing. I love Inktense paints. I use the blocks, pencils and pan paints all together. Because they are ink based - while they don't "lift" well, but I love them for putting down a base and then working on the top.
Thank you Diane for this sketch/painting, I have the Inktense pencils but not used them in a long time, thanks for the reminder. Keep doing what you do because we need you to show what we can achieve too. Take care Sandy 🌸
Hahaha, then you are a heartless monster, like my husband. I'm still laughing Diane!! I love the scene you drew and to see how you used only color pencils. ❤
This tutorial was so enjoyable to watch. It brought back memories from my childhood of the beautifully illustrated farm books I loved to read. Just beautiful ❤️ Your excitement in sharing this really came out. Thank you🐔🤗
I have inktense blocks rather than pencils. They too languish... I'm still obsessed with sketching and watercolours. My first sketchbook, before I realised paper type is important, is terrible for wet work, so now I sketch and paint on good paper and stick it into the first sketchbook. It's my #100day project, and I'm determined to fill the bally thing! This painting is much more lovely than I expected for pencils. I'm a heartless monster I guess!! Hahaha. I love your sheep! I keep thinking I must paint sheep. We're surrounded by them here. Your pen work at the end is so effective. I think I put in too many details. Loose works better. Thanks for sharing your work, your sketchbooks, your stories. I always enjoy your videos. I agree, we all matter 🤗 Mx
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts Margaret, they always count for me. I’m sure you’re not a heartless monster, that’s reserved for my husband (who has little to no aesthetic sense poor man!) For me the idea of the blocks makes me think of LARGE paintings where you can make the most of their size. The pencils are much more my scale personally, as I do like to draw reasonably accurately. There’s something for everyone out there at the moment isn’t there!
Thank you Diane. This has taught me so much. I had to stop your video half way through and get out my small set of Derwent Water Colour pencils and try them out. I’ve never really known what to do with them and always wondered what the difference between the water colour pencils and intense was.
Another wonderful video, Diane - these are perfect company and inspiration to watch as I work on admin! Love the way this piece came to life as you added the water, these inktense products are so mesmerising when we add water! And I totally agree with what you said about how important art is! Letting our spirit flow and the creativity just happen is so important for our hearts and minds
Thanks Katie, and I also want to thank you sincerely for being a real inspiration for me. You’ve opened my eyes to lots of possibilities which I’ve been avoiding exploring for way too long. Our channels are crucial at this time to help people survive all the drama around us. I was fascinated by your adventures in Japan also and your familiarity with so many Japanese products - this is also completely new to me (living in deepest darkest France I don’t get to hear about anything…) and I was wondering how you came to have such a close relationship with Japan. Would love to hear more about that in one of your future videos or maybe you’ve already covered that? Wishing you a great day! (PS I watched your vid with the cockerel - he was great!!!)
@@DianeAntoneStudio Thank you, Diane! That is so wonderful to hear, I’m excited to see where you go next! Such an interesting question, and I have to say in terms of the products, the answer lies here in RUclips! I mostly discovered these brands thanks to watching a lot of artists I watch and getting recommendations from my community too. In terms of Japan itself, it’s a country I’ve just fell in love with! It’s such a different way of life there and much more my speed. There is just so much respect (for each other and for nature) that I sadly feel missing over here. Perhaps I will share more in a video; thank you for asking as it’s not a topic I’ve thought to explore!
I have a set of these pencils which I never used bcz I didn't know how. But I think you have given me enough of a lesson that I can give it a try! Thank you for taking the time and tell the rooster thanks for the serenade!
This is such a charming scene. I really like watching you draw - the pencil sketch to start things off. I've gotten a little more confident in my pencil sketching from watching how you do it. I have the Staedtler Karat Aquarell set of 12 watercolour pencils - pretty similar to your set of Derwent - and this video has given me some new ideas on ways to use them; thanks! I especially like how you got some great colour blends by putting down two or more pencil colours and then adding the water to bring them to life.
I like the Karat Aquarell pencils too - I only have black and blue but maybe I’ll get a set sometime. I definitely need more to explore this art form with!
Thank you for sharing this! I have watercolor pencells from the 90s that I could never quite figure out so they have just sat around, I think I'll give them another go.
As you were talking about the control the pencils provide I was thinking about some cactus I just recently painted. I did not do a background but wished I had and now I feel inspired to create a background color with some watercolor pencils I have. They are not this brand but hopefully I can get some good pigment out of them. Thank you for sharing and always inspiring♡
I shall most certainly be painting this tomorrow! Lovely! I buy my art supplies on the Spanish Amazon site. Very similar prices to the US. You could order them here too probably. Anyway, thanks for your lovely videos. You’re a superb and inspiring teacher, thanks!
Thank you for this video on watercolor pencils. I also have a set and I don’t know how to use them to the fullest. This video was very helpful. Yes, I’ve gotten into a habit doing what I’ve always done and I’m working on breaking that mold. Love your work and it’s a joy listening to you and your perspective on various topics! 🎨👏👏👏❤️👍
This is a wonderful painting, Diane and just this afternoon I watched the video with your sheep 😀! It's a very lovely place where you live and I enjoyed very much seeing it and listening to the birds singing. I thought this would be perfect for having a pony (or better two 😁). I also loved your old sketch books, it's great seeing what one has created over the years. My oldest paintings are from the time when I was about 11 years old from school art class and all the stuff I did since then was collected. I had an interruption of approx. 25 years when I did not paint but started again after my retirement in 2019 when I discovered lots of interesting artists on RUclips and you are one of my favourites. I'm so glad I found your channel - thank you so much for all your phantastic videos, inspiration, information and chatting which makes me laugh quite often. It's so relaxing watching you painting. Greetings from Germany and all the best to you, your family and animals. Dagmar ♥️
Diane, I love this and all your videos, how quaint is this painting. Thank you for your effort in doing these demos. I feel as if I'm in the same room with you, thx
Thanks for continuing to add the pencils!!! I was thinking of them this am, when deciding how to improve a wc I was working on in my nature journal, as I did your shell one yesterday where you added pencils. I need to learn more about how to use them with the wc paint! Your channel is great!
Thank you for another fun landscape and with sheep 💕 I have been trying some of your tutorials and loving all of the ‘easy’ ones on my new journey! You had made a few comments about the 1967 Forsythe Saga, and having a love for period style movies I gave it a try. Absolutely loved it and after 23-24 episodes I simply did not want it to end. But like all things it did end. 🤣 Thank you for all of your tutorials, sketches and easy way about you. Have a great weekend!
Thank you for this! I have recently received two sets of watercolor pencils and have been a little bit intimidated by them. I'll get them out and jump in and see what happens!
This picture captures so much of the personality of the livestock. Perky, pecky excitable chickens and sanguine sheep!! The colors are intense for sure, and the blending makes the colors believable. I'd love to walk out there and feed them all!
I have a full set of Inktense and Graphitint pencils, but I bought them to use in coloring books. I’ve only ventured into watercolor painting in the past year. It never occurred to me to leave lines showing- I always tried to dissolve the pigment completely. But I’m absolutely enchanted by your technique in this painting! It is more illustrative and I love it. I’m feeling very inspired. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and time.
@@DianeAntoneStudio I've done the shells, really enjoyed the process, and quite pleased with outcome. I never thought the intense pencils would look so amazing, in big areas. So EASY to work with, for a background 😀
I love this idea! I have used colored pencils but I have never painted over it. I enjoy your farm since I have had to give up our farm I enjoy you and all your creatures greeat and small.
I tried my pencils on a painting last wk. and was so pleased how they worked and then found you doing the whole painting in pencils. Thank you for the encouragement to use the pencils. I love buying all the new supplies but admit lots remain unused.
I’m glad to hear you too watch the videos of other artists. Some how the mystery of artists is that we (let’s call me a “pre-artist”) feel that real artists just seem to have this vast spontaneous set of images in their mind that they can put on paper. You too need inspiration. I need lots and yours are lovely
I have absolutely no imagination and no images exist in my mind. I’m one of those people with a high level of “aphantasia” or the inability to picture things in detail in my head. So I have to try things out before I can paint them. I think that’s why my art is so loose. My daughter is the same, no visual imagination capacity!!!
I enjoyed this, so thank-you. I don’t have any Derwent colors, but I do have a Prismacolor set that I haven’t done anything with yet, so I will give this a try soon.
Thank you so much Diane. What a fun project. I have been really sick with a virus and unable to paint. Finally this afternoon I felt up to something small and easy. I was looking through my RUclips people and came across this. God bless

I was exactly the same😂❤ all the best for your new adventure
I like that I can make quicker progress with watercolour. 😉
A lady in another channel suggested Pentel watercolour pencils. I bought them but they are not the best. 😔 The colours are too weak.
Diane, do you ever paint on the other side of the paper in your sketchbook?
Love this! I too have a habit of buying all sorts of supplies and I do love watercolor pencils. It is my Therapy! “We are meant to create.”
“…then your heart is monster, like my husband.” I just had to laugh out loud. So funny!
Your drawing/painting is lovely with a folk art touch. I love how you are open to using new media -shows how young at heart you are.

Please do! If not now, then when!!!!
Family issues are taking place. I have a son who is stuck in the horrific flooding in southern Brazil. No way to come home to the USA. One day at a time. Also have other situations that need my energy and focus. Watching you paint is a godsend for me.
Utterly beguiling, loved watching you draw, hearing the scribble noise and then the swoosh of water and the magic that happens!
I have a set of 72 Artistro watercolor pencils that I have barely used. Thanks for the encouragement to get them out and give them another go.
Can’t wait to try the watercolor pencils ❣️
Thank you for sharing!!
You are so welcome!
That’s great, thanks for sharing and hope it goes well!
Blessings
I have a set of these plus sticks and have never used them. Thanks to your video, I am going to put them to use.
Have fun! That’s really good to hear!
I wish I’d started to use them sooner quite honestly!
Thanks for this demonstration on how to use the Derwent Inktense pencils. I have a set but haven't really done much with them. I've got to try this, I love how the colors come alive when they get wet. This scene is so charming.
Glad it was helpful! You won’t regret trying them out! (But use relatively smooth paper, not too rough!)
I loved your sketchbook tours. Thank you for sharing. I love Inktense paints. I use the blocks, pencils and pan paints all together. Because they are ink based - while they don't "lift" well, but I love them for putting down a base and then working on the top.
Yes, it’s a great idea, more to come!
Really love your work Diane. You are so inspiring for us beginners!
I'm so glad Maura, keep up the good work!
Love your sketchbook flip through. ❤
Thank you Diane for this sketch/painting, I have the Inktense pencils but not used them in a long time, thanks for the reminder. Keep doing what you do because we need you to show what we can achieve too. Take care Sandy 🌸
You are so welcome!
I love the texture the pencils give the art. Just lovely 💕 Thank you Diane
You are so welcome!
And the rooster is crowing to compliment your farm scene! I like this very much!
Hahaha, then you are a heartless monster, like my husband. I'm still laughing Diane!! I love the scene you drew and to see how you used only color pencils. ❤
Oh thank you! (He’s not really heartless, just aesthetically challenged!!)
This tutorial was so enjoyable to watch. It brought back memories from my childhood of the beautifully illustrated farm books I loved to read. Just beautiful ❤️ Your excitement in sharing this really came out. Thank you🐔🤗
Glad you enjoyed it! I really did!
Me too, I was ignorant, duh!
I always love a sketchbook tour. I love to see the journey.
I loved seeing your sketch books! Thanks!❤️🥰❤️
Glad you like them! Thanks Susan!
very fun Diane I love using my pencils for a change as well...Blessings Jo
I do have water color pencils and didn’t really know what to do with them! Thank you!
Thank you for teaching me so much about art. I look forward to your videos everyday. You are an amazing artist and inspiration to so many.
Thank you so much 😀 that’s so kind xx
This is so true that watercolour pencils can be great for travels.
It's so inspiring watching your creative process flow and to watch you create. This was quite an endeavor... the painting came out beautifully!
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for this video on watercolor pencils. I also have a set and I don’t know how to use them to the fullest. This video was very helpful. Yes, I’ve gotten into a habit doing what I’ve always done and I’m working on breaking that mold. Love your work and it’s a joy listening to you and your perspective on various topics! 🎨👏👏👏❤️👍
I'm definitely going to try this. Thanks for telling me about Kate Moody. She's great!
Great video! I hope to see you use Inktense again in the future. This was very inspiring.
Thank you! Will do!
Dagmar ♥️
Thankyou for another wonderful inspirational video. I use watercolor pencils on the go and in the couch. Pencils and a waterbrush takes you a long way
I love this, Diane. I am definitely going to try this. Thank you so much xxx
Thanks Patricia!
Thank you I enjoy your tutorials - and love listening to you! Marleen from San Diego, CA
You are so welcome! Thanks Marleen!
Very beautiful paintings. Thank you for sharing your work with us ❤
My pleasure 😊 thanks for commenting x
I love inktense pencils and watercolor together. 2 of my favorite supplies. This is a fun video.
It is a good series, isn’t it! I’ve watched it loads of times! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Thanks so much for your generosity Linda!
Thank you for this! I have recently received two sets of watercolor pencils and have been a little bit intimidated by them. I'll get them out and jump in and see what happens!
Such a lovely picture, and such good encouragement to keep creating!
Thank you so much! Yes, we need encouragement !
This picture captures so much of the personality of the livestock. Perky, pecky excitable chickens and sanguine sheep!! The colors are intense for sure, and the blending makes the colors believable. I'd love to walk out there and feed them all!
Love it 🤩💚💖
Very Wonderfull Drawing and new Watercolor ,
Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👏👏😍😍🌹🌹
Love your wonderful experiments and positive attitude. I have these pencils but haven't really used them, so glad you are doing this! Many thanks!
Delightful scene….maybe I will get out my watercolour pencils again🙂
I have a full set of Inktense and Graphitint pencils, but I bought them to use in coloring books. I’ve only ventured into watercolor painting in the past year. It never occurred to me to leave lines showing- I always tried to dissolve the pigment completely. But I’m absolutely enchanted by your technique in this painting! It is more illustrative and I love it. I’m feeling very inspired. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and time.
Wonderful Telena, that’s really good to hear! Hope you enjoy your new direction in art!
I enjoyed seeing your sketchbooks!
Thankyou Diane for this wonderful tutorial....all of it is so inspirational ❤
You are so welcome! So glad you enjoyed it!
I love watercolor pencils! I use them all the time.
I enjoyed this, so thank-you. I don’t have any Derwent colors, but I do have a Prismacolor set that I haven’t done anything with yet, so I will give this a try soon.
You are so welcome! Have fun!
❤ I really appreciate this great teaching tutorial…. I have learnt some helpful ideas… Thankyou, Diane! ❤
You are so welcome Katherine, so glad you liked it!
I love looking at your history, as illustrated in your sketchbooks!
Thanks Laurie!
I love my Inktense! I dream of having the whole set. Then a full set of the blocks.
Thank you! My daughter is coming over tomorrow and we are going to paint one of your landscapes! Hope we do a decent job, you make it look so easy!
This is one of my favorites.
I too am more of drawer... I think thats why your penwork and details appeals to me.. :) Hugs! deb
Wonderful! Thanks Deb!
You are great!! Thanks for inspiring us to make time for us and enjoy it!! ❤
Thank you so much Diane. What a fun project. I have been really sick with a virus and unable to paint. Finally this afternoon I felt up to something small and easy. I was looking through my RUclips people and came across this. God bless
Sorry to hear you’ve not been well and I hope you are better soon!
