Mat Hoffman breaks his existing world record of 23 feet out of a quarter-pipe! Extreme! Mat Hoffman (born January 9, 1972) is an American BMX rider who is considered one of the best vert ramp riders in the history of the sport. He is nicknamed "The Condor" and runs the BMX Freestyle brand Hoffman BMX Bikes based out of Oklahoma City, OK.
In 1983, when Mat Hoffman was 11 years old he competed in a contest in Madison Square Gardens. He had learned to ride BMX on his own and didn't have any other riders for reference. He remembers: "when I got to that contest I went 'woah, I guess I am going higher than everyone else'."
In 1987, at the age of 15, Mat Hoffman became the youngest SPROO to join the freestyle BMX circuit. An article in Ride Magazine commented: "What's left to say about a guy who ignored all established limits and redefined vert riding - at age 15[?]". He won the first contest he entered as a professional and took home a check for $2200.
In 1991, Hoffman attained the pro division and launched both Hoffman Promotions and Hoffman Bikes.
He developed the Bicycle Stunt (BS) Series to give riders a place to compete and to showcase their talents. ESPN joined with Hoffman Promotions in 1995 to produce and televise the series each year.
The growth of Hoffman Promotions gave birth to the Hoffman Sports Association (H.S.A.), the organizing body for BMX Freestyle events worldwide, such as ESPN's X Games and all international X Games bicycle-stunt events.
Hoffman has produced, directed and hosted several TV series for ESPN including Kids in the Way, HBtv and Mat's World. In February 2008, Hoffman produced and co-hosted Mat Hoffman's Evel Knievel Tribute with Johnny Knoxville, which aired on MTV and featured record-breaking stunts by Travis Pastrana, Trigger Gunn, Allan Cooke, and Davin Halford.
Hoffman partnered with Activision to produce Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX video game and Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 video game - released in August 2002, in conjunction with the release of Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX2 Tour TV show, which aired on ESPN2 and is available on DVD and VHS.

Did Matt make it?????
Vid was made 12 years ago and you committed 10 months ago
This dude came to my school, freestyled the shit out of our cafeteria then taught us about bike safety.
Matt Hoffman went 26 feet over copin he was 56 feet in the air that is just crazy what a true bmx legend
Hoffman will always be the king of big air on bmx for sure..not many people now days do what he did in the 90s...
He was going the same height, high air motocross riders do on the quarter pipe
Now we have MX guys copying this. Raha went 49’ out of a 50’ quarter pipe!
The best thing I can say about this guy is everything that stokes you today (and its nearly everything, he invented at least the base of that trick, every trick). At the time this guy rocked our world in a way Tony Hawk, the Beatles or even Star Wars could not even get close. BMX in all its forms today, blows me away, but Matt did all the baselines - first flair, first backflip, first 900, first no handed 540 & 900(?). Over 20 years later there are plenty of pros you cant't do all of that. Plus he had a balls out style like you would not believe. I am a Brit, I have meet Bestwick but Hoffmann is the man. I had one of his 1990 Haro Masters with bashguard and that thing was seriously heavy and that is what he was flipping for the first time. The bloke is a legend, a lunatic, a poet and a visionary. God bless you Matt Hoffmann.
He is The Condor.
That's true but Mirra helped the sport just as much in no more.!
"...Star Wars could not even get close".
@@sbaxter4207 indeed
Well said
The baddest man ever! And he's not dead. Bunch of people are saying RIP Mat! He's NOT DEAD!!!!
Think they're getting confused with Dave Mirra
Mirra, hoffman, nyquist are all kings of bmx..but mirra is the only one to get into different style of sports RIP

he landed his first 26.5 feet (as shown in the video) when he had started stacking was when the guinness world record and nation tv stations turned up. as he said, when they were there he was doing it for the record, whereas he would usually do it for himself, and for fun.
he landed a 20 footer 10 years earlier, but when dc came out and said dave mirra had the record at 19, mat had to come back and prove that he didnt.
Miss Ya brother! Were to old and busted up to hit it hard like we use to in Oklahoma. You are and will always be the BEST and most influential riders EVER!!!
He isnt dead
Hes not dead AND he still shreds! I saw him last week! what a beast
The Condor!! i'll never forget the 900 no hander @ X games!!
I rode with Matt when he was 14 years old,,,he was getting 8 feet of air. Back then that was incredible. Then he advanced and got the name Condor.
EPIC !!!! THUMBS UP !!!!
One of my favorite moments from Matt
and so the megaramp was born
not really...Danny way brought that into being
@@sk8anddestroy792 this was filmed years before anyone was skating mega ramps. So yeah, mat hoffman is the true og.
@@sk8anddestroy792 also airing 26ft over coping on a 23ft ramps is something no skater has done. Mat was 50 feet in the fucking air!!!!!!
@@mollywhoppedsouls_pvp To be fair, this isn't a mega ramp - it's a big quarter pipe with a long run-up strip. The mega ramp was 100% Danny Way because from his original blueprints, he featured a drop-in platform to split ramp design with gaps ranging from 50-70ft into a massive quarter pipe. The dude literally invented the ability to do "bomb-dropping" because of this design. This was filmed in 1998, and Way invented the first mega ramp in 2002-03.
@@brianty6676 I never said Hoffman invented the mega ramp.
You know its lockdown when u wanna come here and see matt destroy himself and gravity . Insane air man by the vert legend. I had a condor hoffman bmx .dreams
I have been watching Mat Hoffman's Testimony vert session during Covid19 lockdown. Worth watching, tricks in the video are beyond difficult.
The bit at the end wasn't for show. If you've seen the doc "The Birth Of Big Air" it shows the ABC footage of the aftermath of that crash. Matt was knocked unconscious and was out cold for a substantial amount of time. Paramedics arrived shortly after he came to and strapped him down and took him to the hospital. He spent 3 days in a coma and took over a year to recover. He never touched that big ramp again and tore it down. Two close calls to dying (He almost bled to death internally back in t
The best bmx rider ever to live.Yea there's others that are great and are doing new tricks but Mat is the greatest.
One of My Heros "the Condor" 👍💥 bro would fly up to the buzzards .
Thank You ! !
I like how he did his best
The first day then failed all of the other days
Thanks for posting this !. I remember his Sprocket jockey show back in the day. I believe there was Mirra , Miron, and McCoy doing the show.
I met Matt and Jay when they came over to Japan in 90's !
Quem veio dps do bob fala dele ? No podpah
Awe Matt Hoffman!!!! He came to my junior high school in the mid 80's for a just say no to drug rally. He was so cool! He performed along with some other bike riders. I thought he so cute;) glad to see that he is still riding. Awesome!!!!
the best part was at the end. Night-Nite
hes dead
Zander The Gamer no hes not i follow him on instagram and he still puts shit on all the time
***** ....HE'S NOT DEAD..He was blinking (lightly) at the end of the video... No One saw that? besides... they wouldn't put the video up if he really died..lol
Matt didn't just go high. He's the reason people load so many tricks into one launch. He was the king of combos when no one else was doing them yet.
Hoffman is awesome!
Nobody ever has anything bad to say about Matt because...there's nothing bad to say about him! a awesome dude always has time for fan's and without a doubt, the best vert rider of all time. I met him in 92 at a Lake Owen comp that was when Hoffman Bikes was just getting started such a nice guy he deserves all the respect cos he's earned it.
I totally remember this video in one of the Mat Hoffman BMX games.
You can fly Matt! Awesome! I’m watching you on ESPN 30 for 30 right now. 🚴♂️
There's a whole 30 for 30 documentary about this. It's called "The Birth of Big Air".
ruclips.net/video/xVMG-39JEMo/видео.html
I competed against Matt back in 1987 in San Antonio, TX on ramps..Back then 7' off air was good. He was insane..hit a few 8' look backs and no footers. I did a 7' can can..then hooked my rear tire. Back then these were big tricks..now days..child's play.
Back then I was winning contests with my epic finisher...i would bunny hop into a wheelie and do a 360 but with my eyes closed. It was called "the dancing blind lucky rabbit". I was unstoppable. By the time 84 rolled around those guys were beating me with my own stuff. They'd do two bunny hops and multiple 360s and I knew the game had changed forever. I'm surprised ESPN 30 for 30 hasn't approached me for a documentary yet tbh
@@k.c.r.5974who are you?
Gotta love and respect The Condor!
matt hoffmans pro bmx game had me lit as a kid
4:27: Mat get tired, Mat take nap
THATS WHAT WE DID BACK IN THE DAY BOYS
My heart stopped at 2:16 dude
I could actually feel it
Has anyone seen Mat as of late? ('17). He is physically and mentally paying the price for all these stunts.
I remember reading about this in his autobiography a couple years ago. Insane.
The Birth of Big Air ! the most injured guy in Sports also with over 300 concussions 😳
Leg operation with no anesthesia see: ruclips.net/video/EZ36BPIoRF0/видео.html
I got to watch an advanced screening of this early in 2010. The other two in the room with me? Mat Hoffman and his buddy.
MATT YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!!!!
best bmxer of all time he pretty much made bmx thanks to him we are doin the tricks we can today because he made them thank u matt hoffman
He's great but he didnt "make bmx"
Radical !!!!!
Here in 2021 just reflecting on simpler times. I miss 2008
Matt is the man. I don't like most pros or give them props but after talking to him at Woodward and seeing how he shapes and pushed the sport I like him a lot.. And I'm not even a biker.
so many concussions. i hope Mat doesnt suffer from CTE like Mirra
Daniel Lion I
And to think I used to get to ride his ramps when I was a kid in the early 90's late 80's.
I was good friends with Travis and used to ride his first Blue halfpipe in his parents backyard, crazy to think about it now.
@@alabama01100 yeah it was a great time. That dude was fearless!
Matt looks like a very brave man.
*bows* All hail the mighty Condor!! If you ride BMX and don't respect what Mat has done for you, then not even Satan can save you
and still... one of my all time hero's!
El mejor de todo tiempo!!!
Gracias por todo Mat.
He feels no pain- And most importantly, he has always had the best style. Even at this altitude. Some say he´s not human.....but he´s the nicest guy around.ride on.
Dude, with fucking pegs too! Insane... like when I see these people doing the megaramp with pegs on too I'm like are you INSANE?! You're asking to get impaled.
Watch ESPN's 30 for 30 Matt Hoffman last night, GREAT SHOW ( A must watch). Never new the details nor the beginning story line for Matt, I'm not really into BMX nor Skateboarding but, having to boys, I knew about the sport. Matt posters hung on my son's wall for years. I never new he was the founding father of big air half pikes, Matt was really the only one that could see into the future. Me and my son's watch the big air & x-games ever year now.
matt is my bmx hero
One of the toughest guys alive .
My cousin while watching this: wow I wish I could build that quickly
"YOU'RE RUINING THE SPORT!" Hoffman's dad screaming at Grasso
I can’t believe I met him today he’s a legend
Why would you say that bro
He's our hero.
The best of the matt since ps 2❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Big Respect .
true legend
love him he is a real inspiration to me growing up with him as champ in the 90's
Eleven years, man...
@@nidlaaa2476 and still breaking collar bones 😂
the best rider i am fã this guy
I loved his games on the PlayStation when I was a kid
mat hoffman is the coolest old guy ever.
Oh my goodness. Matt, you are crazy. I can't believe my cousin tried to do that xD and no he's not dead. He was here just last summer for vacation. The house on the back is my aunt joni's house. What a crazy man this kid is xD
Crazy that it doesn't even start counting till you hit the coping add like another 12-15ft off the ground with the ramp
Gotta love the flag on the ramp
LONG LIVE THE CONDOR!!!
Nice awsome bike got one
If he attempted this again on the style of BMX we all ride now, he would touch the sky :O
I drove by the house just the other day the house is still there but it's a whole neighborhood now built where that ramp was.
Mat was a beast
Raddest rider in the world.
man, airing out that high must feel so cool (not falling)
Seems like the old-school guys from a few years back all had their seats a little higher. Most of guys these days have the seats super low. Is this true?
Well, it depends on what you ride. Street riders tend to run their seats lower than ramp riders. Vert riders, of which Hoffman was primarily, tend to run their seats high because they will need to clench with their knees to do barspins and other tricks
I'm trying to find an old video I could have sworn it was called "Most Extreme". It started with some vert skating, including some early clips of Tony Hawk. Then it goes to a Curb Dogs video, snowboard video the Mat Hoffman.
I'm hoping maybe someone here will know. It was a lot like this video and Mat says "build it and they will come".
Absolute madman.
He was holding the rope in his hand xD What a hero
Matt is the man!
2014 cold water challenge (edited version)
What a juggernaut.
Matt Hoffman is immortal! a true true legend!!
sure mirra, DMC etc are heroes, but hoffman is just different gravy! just so passionate & what a nice fella too!
Nobody tops him - he's the man.
if God created BMXing, he did it for this man
That is rad!
Hes not dead, hes probibly bustin some sweet moves on his own halfpipe now! :D
This guy is Crazy, the only words for this is crazy!!!

The Condor in full effect.
He's not dead.. Dave Mira is the one who shot himself. I live under the same roof as Mat's brother & saw Mat like 2 months ago. He's very well alive
No everyone hes NOT DEAD, he came close and flatlined in hospital so he kinda did die but they revived him, read his biography and wacht his vid on youtube mat hoffman is not dead.
King of vert of all time.
He has a specially made wheelbarrow to cart his giant titanium nuts around...
One of the best and probably they toughest
i've seen videos of matt crashing. getting a massive gash in his leg. then stitching it up right there and then himself and then carrying on. The guy is a fucking legend. :')
im watching this video because Bob Burnquist talked about Mat Hoffman and mentioned that sunt in a podcast called Inteligencia LTDA haha
