The best thing I can say about this guy is everything that stokes you today (and its nearly everything, he invented at least the base of that trick, every trick). At the time this guy rocked our world in a way Tony Hawk, the Beatles or even Star Wars could not even get close. BMX in all its forms today, blows me away, but Matt did all the baselines - first flair, first backflip, first 900, first no handed 540 & 900(?). Over 20 years later there are plenty of pros you cant't do all of that. Plus he had a balls out style like you would not believe. I am a Brit, I have meet Bestwick but Hoffmann is the man. I had one of his 1990 Haro Masters with bashguard and that thing was seriously heavy and that is what he was flipping for the first time. The bloke is a legend, a lunatic, a poet and a visionary. God bless you Matt Hoffmann.
The bit at the end wasn't for show. If you've seen the doc "The Birth Of Big Air" it shows the ABC footage of the aftermath of that crash. Matt was knocked unconscious and was out cold for a substantial amount of time. Paramedics arrived shortly after he came to and strapped him down and took him to the hospital. He spent 3 days in a coma and took over a year to recover. He never touched that big ramp again and tore it down. Two close calls to dying (He almost bled to death internally back in t

he landed his first 26.5 feet (as shown in the video) when he had started stacking was when the guinness world record and nation tv stations turned up. as he said, when they were there he was doing it for the record, whereas he would usually do it for himself, and for fun. he landed a 20 footer 10 years earlier, but when dc came out and said dave mirra had the record at 19, mat had to come back and prove that he didnt.
Thanks for posting this !. I remember his Sprocket jockey show back in the day. I believe there was Mirra , Miron, and McCoy doing the show. I met Matt and Jay when they came over to Japan in 90's !
@@mollywhoppedsouls_pvp To be fair, this isn't a mega ramp - it's a big quarter pipe with a long run-up strip. The mega ramp was 100% Danny Way because from his original blueprints, he featured a drop-in platform to split ramp design with gaps ranging from 50-70ft into a massive quarter pipe. The dude literally invented the ability to do "bomb-dropping" because of this design. This was filmed in 1998, and Way invented the first mega ramp in 2002-03.
Nobody ever has anything bad to say about Matt because...there's nothing bad to say about him! a awesome dude always has time for fan's and without a doubt, the best vert rider of all time. I competed against Matt back in 1987 in San Antonio, TX on ramps..Back then 7' off air was good. He was insane..hit a few 8' look backs and no footers. I did a 7' can can..then hooked my rear tire. Back then these were big tricks..now days..child's play.
Back then I was winning contests with my epic finisher...i would bunny hop into a wheelie and do a 360 but with my eyes closed. It was called "the dancing blind lucky rabbit". I was unstoppable. By the time 84 rolled around those guys were beating me with my own stuff. They'd do two bunny hops and multiple 360s and I knew the game had changed forever. I'm surprised ESPN 30 for 30 hasn't approached me for a documentary yet tbh
Matt is the man. I don't like most pros or give them props but after talking to him at Woodward and seeing how he shapes and pushed the sport I like him a lot.. And I'm not even a biker.
Watch ESPN's 30 for 30 Matt Hoffman last night, GREAT SHOW ( A must watch). Never new the details nor the beginning story line for Matt, I'm not really into BMX nor Skateboarding but, having to boys, I knew about the sport. Matt posters hung on my son's wall for years. I never new he was the founding father of big air half pikes, Matt was really the only one that could see into the future. Me and my son's watch the big air & x-games ever year now.
I can remember when he had sent in a picture of himself like 12,15ft above. He was also very young to BMX plus Magazine. It was one of those early BMX mags.Anyway in the caption the editor,or whoever wrote something like "wow that is not your average everyday air.You might have a future in BMX freestyle"The rest is history.
Funny the Haro Sport was made for Dominguez and he set the bar really high. But Matt took it a crazy step further. What maniac would hook themselves to a dirtbike and go like 50mph on a 20in bicycle to do an almost 30ft air? To my first point Matt drove the mid-school movement in the 90's like Dominguez drove the 80's. If you ever wonder why there were 48 spoke wheel's, 14mm axles, 10lb bulletproof frames, and 40lb bikes look no further than this dude. WTF no bike that wasn't bulletproof solid could take this.
Ive never actaully seen the building of a ramp, which just as a blue collar guy had to be fun to build. But my question is abojt the ramp, is the half pipe angled forward or backwards so when a person goes airborne they have better chances of landing and riding it out? Amazing what crazy shit people do lol but its also amazing what humans can do
Oh my goodness. Matt, you are crazy. I can't believe my cousin tried to do that xD and no he's not dead. He was here just last summer for vacation. The house on the back is my aunt joni's house. What a crazy man this kid is xD
He feels no pain- And most importantly, he has always had the best style. Even at this altitude. Some say he´s not human.....but he´s the nicest guy around.ride on.
