  • @thirdpedalnirvana
    @thirdpedalnirvana 11 месяцев назад +4

    Todd, you still seem confused by the hate the new supra got - and still gets. It's really not that complicated.
    Toyota and BMW collaborated to make a great sports car, and we, the enthusiasts of driving, really appreciate that. The problem is that most fans of the 4th gen supra ARE NOT fans of driving. They wouldn't understand why a Miata is more fun than a Lamborghini Urus, or a fiesta ST is more fun than a Focus RS. They certainly would never understand why someone would rather buy a new Supra over a Dodge Hellcat. They like sound, they like fury, they like burning rubber, they like acceleration, they like drag strips, they like mechanical violence. They drive spec sheets. And the simple fact of the matter is the 4th gen Supra isn't a sports car to them. It isn't a car at all. It is a vessel for the most overbuilt mass produced DOHC inline six of all time, the 2JZ. They are fans of a motor that, with a big turbo, a tune, and a headgasket, can make 1000+ hp.
    The new supra is plenty powerful, to those of us who actually want to put power down to the road and have a balanced, usable sports car experience. But fans of the 4th gen Supra don't care about any of that. Heck the 4th gen supra is less sporty and weighs more (in NA trim) than the Lexus IS300 with the same NA 2JZ motor. Toyota's miscalculation with the Supra was that they thought they had fans of their car, when really they had fans of their engine. It doesn't matter if the new engine from BMW is better at breathing and making power stock than any Toyota motor has ever been. It matters that they cant go straight from the dealership to a tuning shop and in 24 hours for $10 grand of upgrades make 1000hp at the wheels. Toyota should have built the supra with tractor parts and designed every component for 3x the power of stock. It would have made it a worse sports car. It would have made it less delicate, less balanced, heavier... but it would have given Supra fans what they wanted.
    Instead, they made a car for us, the people who love driving, the people who habitually buy 5-15 year old cars so we can get more car for our money, because we don't care if we aren't seen as wealthy or hip. They made a car for the people who see merit in the GT86 over the GR Supra. The people who would rather drive an ND miata than an Urus. They made a car for people who wish Porsches weren't driven by people who want the badge, perhaps 2% of Porsches clientele. They made a car I'd want more than a porsche, for the same money... but I don't have that money. Its too expensive for those of us who cant even dream of a new porsche, and its not prestigious enough for most porsche buyers. Its not tunable enough to get the 4th gen supra fanboys who would rather drive an NA 4th gen than a miata - ONLY for bragging rights.
    They made the mistake of developing the car they wanted to build, the car they wanted to own, the car the engineers wanted to own and drive. And that's why I don't think I will ever be able to make my job my passion. Because if I worked in the auto industry, I'd either make cars that nobody wanted to buy, or I'd be miserable.

    If Alfa Romeo made a manual 4cyl Giulia I would be so all over it. Even if they kept the part where you can't defeat traction control. But I don't think they're gonna pull a Supra and release it after a few years.... I was going to say that I like driving sports cars with the windows down, but that includes the 300zx, so maybe I like wind buffeting? Do people buy sports cars and want to have the top down/windows open but not have wind hitting them in the hair??? Like what's the point of being "in the elements" but you want them out of your face?? I thought the whole point of being in a car with windows down/top down is your head and upper torso is enveloped in violent waves of air pulsing through your skin, quickly drying your sweat and making you FEEL your speed. If you don't want wind in your hair, you want an enclosed cockpit.

    I like the car but in all the videos I have seen it just seems like it is to fast for enjoying normal driving and not lose your license. You would need to short shift the manual everywhere in order to not exceed the speed limit and this seems to defy the reason to get a manual in the first place.....may as well get the auto if you can't use the full rev range in normal driving. From this respect perhaps the GR86 is a better daily/city car.

      Watch their piece on the GT86 vs 2.0 supra. Yes, it's the 1st gen 86, but it should give you a good idea.

    • @milesfathi
      @milesfathi 11 месяцев назад +3

      I own the GR86 and test drove the supra 3.0 recently. They are very different cars. Supra is a big boy kind of performance car. You gain premium feeling and tons of power but you also gain weight and lose a bit connectedness. The dominating feeling with the GR86 is the lightness and the fact that you feel everything. My takeaway was that for that 2-5% of the time when you want to go for that fun drive, GR86 is more enjoyable. The other 95% of the time, supra takes it with power and refinement. The big let down for me with the GR86 is the subaru engine which makes way too many unrefined noises.

    • @johnhunter7244
      @johnhunter7244 11 месяцев назад

      @@milesfathi that makes sense to me, but it's also a bit ironic how the supra (and most 2 seaters) is the same size and heavier than the 86.

    • @thirdpedalnirvana
      @thirdpedalnirvana 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@milesfathi I spent a weekend with my friend's '13 BRZ and I know what you mean. But what's so odd about it is that the sounds are so dirty, snarly, unrefined 4cyl noises, but then you expect to feel those 4 cyl vibrations. But because it's a boxer, it's smooth. It's like biting into a chip covered in red dust that you think is chili powder only to find its paprika. The sound is very similar to an S2000 but the honda wants to shake your fillings out, whereas the BRZ gently massages your shoulders.

    • @thirdpedalnirvana
      @thirdpedalnirvana 11 месяцев назад

      From what I understand, the GR86 is more fingertippy, more likely to make you have fun when you aren't pushing it, whereas the Supra is more planted. However, the shorter wheelbase in the supra gives it an agility that reveals itself when you drive harder. I imagine back to back down an empty backroad, the Supra is more fun, both power AND handling. However the 86 probably feels more nimble and agile at lower speed/around town, thanks to its lower weight.
      I think the scale goes something like this:
      "chuckable" (Miata .... GR86............................Supra.........Nissan Z......Porsche 911) "Planted"
      But take it with a grain of salt. I've driven every car on that scale EXCEPT the Supra).

    I drove my supra over 30000kms mostly on curvy narrow European mountainroads, have been 3 months in the alps with it in sum.
    And sry but I need to say the supra isn't that great of a Sportscar. I got a 2.0 but in the European dynamic specs, so it got the eLSD, the brakes and the adaptive Suspension of the 3.0. And even with these breaks(with upgrades: pads, hoses and fluid) the supra makes so much problems downhill. The general feel in the supra for anything is missing. Sure it's still a fun car, the spread of things it can handle is huge! But I would rate it more GT oriented than a real Sportscar.
    On last Friday I drove the new m2 g87 on our backroads here. On Saturday I got back in my supra... In the supra you can't never go that pace(the power is taken out of the equation 2.0 vs S58...), I felt real unsafe in pushing the supra. It just isn't that capable.
    And nearly all roads I drive with these cars are way tighter than the one in the video. In the real tight stuff the supra is decent, but not more. As it gets a little bit wider(even tighter then shown here) it falls of hardly.
    But this is just my opinion. You can surely join a discussion with me;)
