Since we're not living in the '80's anymore for quite a few decades the automatic transmissions outperform the manual in every way. And that sorry excuse of it being more involving is just a fantasy which all those wannabe racecar drivers would like you to believe. And that's basically the focus group that still prefers a manual over an automatic, people stuck in the '80's and wannabe racecar drivers.
I'm 26, trying to teach my friends. Most of them are convinced they're gonna instantly blow up my car even though I didn't know what I was doing when I started either. The few that do get it way quicker then I ever did, mostly because I teach it better then my parents ever did. Not that my parents don't know what they're doing, I just remember what it was like having no idea what was going on.
The percentage of people who know how to drive manual is always seeming to be dropping more and more. I've known how to drive manual since I was 14 and I'm 35 now.
I love how Toyota’s GR line still includes manual transmissions for all its cars. I think they should still be an option in their performance packages for any manufacture. It’s not always about 0-60 times.
Most buyers want an automatic, hence why the manuals have become some uncommon. The market dictates it. There are only around 3 dozen or so models sold with manual in US, and slightly more in Canada.

So only the base model will have a manual option, but dealers always try and upsell to higher trims, or they want the performance packages that only offer automatics. And that’s even if the dealers get a manual for their innovatory. It becomes a self fulfilling idea that no one wants automatics, when in reality is that the cars they want manuals in never offer them. Like I would love the Subaru Impreza RS to have an optional manual. But they don’t.
This already the answer for the Nizmo Z because this already has lots of features more like magnetic ride, a better manual, full leather and a better motor.
I just detailed one of these! What a cool car. Just hard for anyone over 5’8” to get in smoothly. You have to adopt a new entrance and exit strategy so you don’t hit your head.
The cool feature of the “station buttons” is that they are like short cut buttons for everything. I used them for phone contacts, screen on/off and radio etc.
I wish Toyota would have developed their own car. I drive a Toyota now and love it. Used to have a pre-plastic BMW, loved that too.. but theres no way im dealing with the money pits theyve been putting out for the past 20+ years.

I was impressed with all the work Toyota did to get that manual right. and couldn’t agree more about the steering wheel the wheel is a big part of the character of the car, but in this case just isn’t right, I would definitely go aftermarket and I don’t really like doing that but I’ve seen some really nice wheels that definitely improve the look of the interior. And you nailed it again absolutely the 86 for half the money thereabouts , I want a supra But the 86 is definitely the smarter thing to do we shall see have a great one🐧🐧🐧👍
You can definitely change the chunky steering wheel to a sport wheel. That’s the same wheel they offered on regular 3 series. The 3 spoke sport wheel is much better. 😉👍🏻 I’d take the new Z. It’s a bit more old school. 👏🏻😎
So, the manual Supra is even more fun than the automatic. In other shocking news, dogs bark, it's hot in July and it rained again in New England 😁 I guess you'd need to go to Colorado to really test out that uphill hairpin turn function - I found plenty of them when I took a road trip there last year. I really like the color of this one, and it sounds great, too. Great review, and looking forward to more videos on the other Supra along with the V-8 Celica!

Great review, but do have to correct you, the B58 gen2 here does not have Toyota D4-S. D4-S meant it is direct and port, this only has direct, no port injection sadly.
I own a 2017 BMW M2 and I recognize many bits and buttons from my car, especially on the dash board. You can look at it in one of two ways: either it's tried and true or it's outdated.
I really miss my GR Supra (automatic). It was such a great drive. Very fast, and very practical as a daily with the hatchback. It's looks also garnered a LOT of attention (and comments of 'nice BMW').
Nice! Manual transmission should be an option on all of their vehicles, wish I had one in my 4Runner. I like to be in control of shift changes not a computer.
Maybe I'm old school but prefer my Japanese cars to be MIJ. The previous Supra was extremely reliable, tunable, and Japanese. BMWs just aren't known for reliability. I would take a BRZ or a Z over this car too.

To save gas I used to drive in the highest gear possible without the engine bogging/dying. My complaints--wind buffeting, the trunk release, the funky wheel lugs when you have to change tires, the brake dust build up on the rims, & the high-pitched BMW horn.
Personally, I feel sorry for people who can't drive a manual. True, modern automatics are faster and more efficient, but in my opinion less engaging. With a manual, you become part of the car. Sometimes faster doesn't mean better, especially for a driving enthusiast.

Manual transmissions can be super fun and all and my Ranger, Altima, and three motorcycles (and four bicycles) have them but irregardless they SUCK when I'm stuck in stop and go traffic. Except for the bicycles but that's a different story.

Been trying since the summer to buy a manual transmission supra in red/orange/yellow and none are available without a significant markup. I can afford the markup, but I can't justify it when I'm already driving around in an M4 CS which had zero markup, and I'm not looking to trade the car, but add the M4 to the household.
A manual transmission makes EVERY car more fun to drive. Even tiny, gutless econoboxes are more fun with a manual. Nothing has ruined drivers cars more than automatic transmissions because isn't fun the whole point of having a drivers car?

Wow 2.75 inch diameter exhaust. My q60 has a stock diameter of 1.5inches paired with a massive muffler, and 4 cats. I hate it when people say it sounds like a Dyson vacuum 😢
I can change parts but I'm no mechanic. And at my age I have no desire to crawl under a car. Not everyone is as talented as you are with a wrench. I say that to say this, Toyota has a history of building mechanically sound vehicles. BMW builds endless money pits. That is why I am not happy with BMWs engineering. Great review 😊
Not hard to really fix. It's not hard to reach alot of stuff in these and more or less no need to get under the car if something breaks (well unless the suspension is somehow damaged or is changed). Most people throwing a fit don't even know that these aren't actually hard to fix unless something stupid was done to the car to make it so or it's a lemon from factory.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 , have you dealt with a recent BMW product? They are no longer easy to fix, and parts are just as difficult to get as they always have been. The last two BMWs I bought new were both horrible, both with design flaws the resulted in horrendously difficult, expensive repairs. Never again.....
@@FT-64 depends on the engines. If it's a V8 or I4 those are normally the ones that have issues(other than the B48 to a extent). The i6s are super specific on which since some are pretty reliable and some aren't. In the supras case they've been pretty reliable even seeing people throwing them threw abuse since day 1 and they still run just fine,even the drag ones do just fine with normal driving without issue. Pends on the engines they run is how I see it or the person since the F80s,40is,G80s,and mk5s have been the most reliable bmws since the 90s bmw engines so it's either the cars a lemon or its a maintenance issues(or just the engine itself).
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 My BMW problems had nothing to do with the engines, it was brakes and oil system components. I won't tolerate that sort of nonsense when paying that much for a car. Yes, it's possible I get two bad examples, but I just can't take that chance again.
I'm curious with the fact that the current supras are mostly BMW, I'm curious how their longevity will be as BMW cars tend to get costly as they get up in mileage.
It's not about whether or not it is quicker or anything else. It's about how it makes you feel. Sum it up, every vehicle is better with stick shift!

I often heard that BMW engine plastic loves to get brittle and break way too soon.
That’s the least of the problems those engines have.
They do. The rubber they use is sub par also, you replace a lot of o-rings and gaskets.

You should rate breaking by measuring the angle above horizontal your hair achieves under max braking such as 22 degrees above horizontal.

The sound and cadence of the shifts feel so satisfying compared to the auto version we have at home. Handling is stellar on this Supra.

AWE makes a foiler wind diffuser for the GR Supra that eliminates the wind buffeting issue. $99 and the problem is solved in a matter of minutes.

Glad the autorev is easy to turn off. I had a Miata for a while that I drove through the mountains and it is so much fun to blip the engine yourself.

Wow 2.75 inch diameter exhaust. My q60 has a stock diameter of 1.5inches paired with a massive muffler, and 4 cats. I hate it when people say it sounds like a Dyson vacuum 😢

I can change parts but I'm no mechanic. And at my age I have no desire to crawl under a car. Not everyone is as talented as you are with a wrench. I say that to say this, Toyota has a history of building mechanically sound vehicles. BMW builds endless money pits. That is why I am not happy with BMWs engineering. Great review 😊

Not hard to really fix. It's not hard to reach alot of stuff in these and more or less no need to get under the car if something breaks (well unless the suspension is somehow damaged or is changed). Most people throwing a fit don't even know that these aren't actually hard to fix unless something stupid was done to the car to make it so or it's a lemon from factory.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 , have you dealt with a recent BMW product? They are no longer easy to fix, and parts are just as difficult to get as they always have been. The last two BMWs I bought new were both horrible, both with design flaws the resulted in horrendously difficult, expensive repairs. Never again.....
@@FT-64 depends on the engines. If it's a V8 or I4 those are normally the ones that have issues(other than the B48 to a extent). The i6s are super specific on which since some are pretty reliable and some aren't. In the supras case they've been pretty reliable even seeing people throwing them threw abuse since day 1 and they still run just fine,even the drag ones do just fine with normal driving without issue. Pends on the engines they run is how I see it or the person since the F80s,40is,G80s,and mk5s have been the most reliable bmws since the 90s bmw engines so it's either the cars a lemon or its a maintenance issues(or just the engine itself).
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 My BMW problems had nothing to do with the engines, it was brakes and oil system components. I won't tolerate that sort of nonsense when paying that much for a car. Yes, it's possible I get two bad examples, but I just can't take that chance again.
I'm curious with the fact that the current supras are mostly BMW, I'm curious how their longevity will be as BMW cars tend to get costly as they get up in mileage.
If you let a dealer maintain anything it’ll be costly as it ages. Flat rate maintenance is the culprit no one talks about.
